Was out at a dinner party tonight and get the distinct impression people are completely done with it, waiting for the government to announce the end of all restrictions, and will be very angry if they don't.

Even the most vocal of the group who's spent the last year arguing with me about everything from masks to getting vaccinated to (in the beginning) whether there would even be a pandemic declared, is now completely unwilling to entertain restrictions continuing beyond the end of January without a clear "back to a completely normal, 2019-type March" plan. Most of the rest of them the same, and these are people who would have been on the government page pretty much the whole way through

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ~C.S. When is the next update due from NPHET lads?

I agree. With a death rate of 2 in 100,000 for Omicron, flu looks like a mass killer. Omicron presents a fantastic opportunity and our best chance to get back to true normal. We have to open up now! Or next variant will beat us to it.

There are no medical reasons why would anybody need a vaccine for Omicron and such should be the nphet advice.

Next meeting is Thursday and recommendations for after January are to discussed.

I don't see any need to wait until the end of January. It's clearly f<cking obvious now that we don't need the last rounds of restrictions introduced. We should be dropping them next week instead of end of January. What difference will it make to wait an extra week. Absolutely none. Might help out a few those working in the industries thay are currently curtailed though. GAA league also starts. Going to look ridiculous with a 5k limit in Croker at the end of January.

It's been true all along that we'll eventually relax to the same extent as elsewhere regardless of nphet and thankfully

The UK attitude has been a joy to behold notwithstanding mistakes made

With the exception of pharmaceutical companies and their shareholders, you forgot to mention.

As soon as the report came out about most people in hospital with covid having no symptoms that should of been been the catalyst for the government to meet to plan ending the restrictions in the next week or so. They are absolute cowards who always have to wait for another country to do something before they will.

Great sense of optimism around atm but we have to remember it's 'NPHET' who are making the decisions

All should be known by next weekend and let's hope its a full reopening with no farcical rules

my wife has been following his podcasts, for th last year or more he has been saying that everyone would catch this, so while probably not saying do nothing he was clear about the trajectory and something you wouldnt hear mehole or the likes say

There’s no way they’ll lift all restrictions by the end of January, it’ll be a “slow and cautions” “roadmap” to “freedom” even though anyone with half a brain can see there’s no justification for keeping the vast majority of restrictions. NPHET continue to insist on treating the nation like school children on a star chart.

True and the way our leaders obey them is so sickening and frustrating

it shoudnt be summer reopening. It should be now reopening. It suggests to me that we will still have light restrictions come the summer. This is unacceptable. There will be absolutely no legitimate circumstances to extend the emergency legislation. Zip.

I can see a lot of restrictions going next month but masks and covid passes will be retained for the foreseeable.

Bless his little heart.... We're dealing with idiots 🙄

We're dealing with Leo.. who is even more sensitive than most to the Twitter mob and more importantly, anything that could have a negative effect on his image and profile.

Until every measure - including masks and distancing - is removed (or at least made optional), it won't be good enough.

The replys are unanimous to that tweet, I don't think I've ever seen as much support for immediate lifting as that tweet.

The time to open is now. They are about to waste the best opportunity to get back to normal that they have been granted since the start of this pandemic. Leo is promising he will be pushing for a more open summer. Christ, these guys are idiots. Period.

It looks like deep down they are hoping that new variant comes along so that they can justify all those 2 years of sh1t show they served us with.

When they see this NPHET will be in no hurry recommending easing the restrictions

If you follow US news, many vaccine mandates are being scrapped here and there.

Mandatory vax is a step too far for a lot of people, and I don't just mean people exactly like me but people of all shades of opinion re covid.

Do you remember the low hospitalization back in august/september, but still we were given the false hope to lift everything on the 22nd of October? We all know exactly what happened after that: covid cert imposed because of 50 unvaccinated in icu, followed by a sharp u-turn on relaxation of restrictions after 1 week. I don't see why this time it should be different, they are going to make use of those emergency powers till the last day they can be imposed, and they are going to renew them till the last day they are in charge. Mass non-compliance is the only way out

Europe is such a double edged sword. On the one hand it is good to have some parity on laws and regulations but on the other it gives politicians/prime ministers the ability to talk amongst themselves how to implement policies outside of countries' and EU parliaments and then use that as leverage. The main gripe is with the latter.

The EU is not one thing..

I am really noticing people relaxing around Covid now. Omicron changed things completely. People are more open and willing to be closer to other people. The fear is going. I notice it in restaurants/pubs, out walking and at matches. Also Covid isn't the only topic of conversation for a change.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Was informed yesterday by friends, rightly so too, that COVID is now a banned topic! With these past two years we've tended to forget that at times.

Covid passes will not stay with a death rate of 0.002% and 40%+ unboosted.

That is, quite frankly, begging for mass civil disobedience.
