Agreed, we need to aim for negative deaths. I want to see resurrections 😀

I totally agree with this. I have no interest in taking a booster but will as I want to get on with my life. You are so curtailed without it and it will have an impact on what my kids can do if I don't have it. Also I would like to travel hassle free so that is another reason. Non of the above have anything to do with health. My older family members have had their boosters so they are protected. But I feel I will be forced to get the booster. Turning into a totally joke now.

I don't think people are going to shun boosters in any greater number. Its a pretty illogical response to this mess and not something I've heard outside of the odd post on here.

You hear a lot of bizarre things here. Purely for entertainment though, not taken seriously by anyone with a modicum of intelligence.

About time NPHET started to need permission to speak to the media! It’ll stop the likes of Doom merchant Favier getting on the airwaves especially when she’s super busy doing her ‘job’

487 in hospital this morning. Down by 200 in just 12 days, and humourously 13 days after Nolan posted his models predicting 1,100 in hospital by now.

    Lowest in 4 weeks.

Obviously we can't expect it to drop forever, but I also see no reason for it to not keep dropping in the short term. We have high cases, but the majority of cases are in very low risk populations. Case numbers have collapsed in high risk populations due to the booster programme and this will only keep improving into Jan/Feb.

So fingers crossed we're back here next Saturday with less than 400 in hospital.

Clearly yes you can have high case numbers and live with Covid.

    ======

Separately there's been a report of a super spreader omicron event in Norway. 2 infected people went to a party of 120 and 80%+ tested positive after. Still being sequenced, but seems unlikely to be coincidence.

The good news is there are no hospitalisations reported from the outbreak, though some of the panickers are saying that it's too soon, you need to wait weeks to see if anyone goes to hospital. Which is not the case.

Anecdotes are not evidence but the more we hear that hospitals are virtually free of vaccinated people with omicron, the more likely it is that it's true.

If they make the booster a requirement for the covid cert then by not getting it you are pretty much denied access to large parts of society. Only a vaccine or recent positive infection count towards the covid cert here. We've allowed this cert become a monster in my opinion and it will be used to coerce large parts of the population.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Mr Varadkar also said it was “hard to understand” and “hard to explain” why the Government was introducing restrictions while cases numbers and hospitalisations were decreasing.

    huh?

Important to note that at that party 100% of the people that went were tested beforehand and were fully vaccinated. Early days but safe to say that it appears the vaccines do not prevent you from catching it unless it was just a one off or something. Which is quite important to add.

UK data to date which will obviously grow

Have to admit that she is a bit of a doom monger alright.

this is old hat but rte is more dangerous than the new variant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 689 ✭✭✭rm212

Just allowing a new variant to rip through is a dangerous game, as that is how we get new variants which are more resistant of the vaccine, more transmissible and/or more dangerous. That’s how mutations work. If every country allows it to rip through, there’s a non-zero change of a second generation Omicron variant which keeps the increased transmissibility, with the severity of delta and a pinch of vaccine resistance thrown into the mix.

I'd love to spend a week as a fly on the wall with Philip Nolan .. to see how he works and reaches the conclusions he does 🤔

    Literally third paragraph

“The WHO has warned it could take weeks to determine how infectious the variant is, whether it causes more severe illness and how effective treatments and vaccines are against it.”

way too early to know for certain how severe this is.

He's an academic. The models are fine as a mathematical exercise I have no doubt, but the assumptions included in them are too wide and probably questionable. And nobody looks at the results and asks have these numbers happened yet and how likely is it that they will happen in current conditions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,117 ✭✭✭FintanMcluskey

It's been known throughout this pandemic that the older you you the higher risk you have of death.

The elderly are the most at risk of death and also the highest vaccinated, therefore they are always going to be disproportionally represented in deaths.

It's absolutely bonkers to see you now making this point to support your argument.

Anyone who suggested this pre vaccine was labelled callous

They should get on to Philip Nolan as he seems to have figured it all out in his latest "models".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,600 ✭✭✭BanditLuke

That's my opinion and how i see it. I'm not going to change my viewpoint because some poster on Boards doesn't share it. I'll change my opinion if the circumstances change and i feel the government or NPHET aren't doing a decent job.

Seemingly the infected guys were just back from South Africa. Is there a Darwin Award for companies?

That implies living with restrictions indefinitely. Is that what you want (Covid isn't going away)

Alternatively what is your timeline for it going through the population slowly. We're two years in now, it's not going to get much better than 93% vaccinated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,826 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

The end of that Independent article with all the NPHET/government media faux Pas gave me a chuckle. Between his snake oil comment and abysmal modeling, if there ever needs to be a Succession style sacrificial lamb from NPHET to placate and increasingly angry public it will absolutely be Nolan.

Sure, we can let tens of thousands die in Ireland, stop hospital care for all other ailments as they get overrun and start prepping the inevitable mass graves, then those that are left will enjoy much greater freedoms and high herd immunity half a year from now

Would you have any sort of evidence that community mitigation measures prevented the above?

About half of deaths in Ireland occurred in nursing homes (as far as I know). Not sure how community mitigation saved any lives there.

Also Indias official death toll is 400k, anything that's suggests otherwise must be considered a conspiracy theory

I'm looking to forward to going on the piss over Xmas, visiting multiple pubs and hugging and shaking hands with anyone who comes near me.
