Violence in The Netherlands and protests in Austria, it's all kicking off now. And hysteria a-plenty here as well.

Good to see the citizens of Northern Ireland out on the streets today

Thereabouts 6,000 cases reported today. Not sure if anyone has posted it yet.

Do people think there will be more restrictions coming? Such as? Or no.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,814 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

I reckon they will wait until after Christmas.

I bet you thought it was a good idea to open up going into winter as well

My guess is hospitality will be closed starting the 2 peak Christmas weeks probably until mid January, but non essential shops will remain open.

Very likely. Will probably focus on 'hospitality' as that's what's believed to have done the damage last Christmas.

Judging by what was done here during other waves we are in the kite flying stage and 1 or 2 weeks from restrictions being introduced.

I think we should involve restrictions but keep them at a distance

Good article on this in the Irish Times earlier

    From the article:

Few senior figures in Government are willing to bet against further restrictions in the coming week or two. But they remain adamant that another lockdown is neither politically acceptable nor socially bearable.

The hope is that the shock of the sudden U-turn, along with the warnings about the pressure on hospitals – culminating in Paul Reid’s alarming letter to hospital chiefs on Thursday warning of the “unthinkable” consequences of hospitals being overwhelmed – will have the same effect on the population that it had on Ministers.

Most people involved in the decision-making believe cases will stabilise, and all the Nphet projections show cases plummeting after the peak. But there will be difficult times before that happens.

A close eye will be kept on Europe what measures are being implemented, and whether or not they work. Four senior sources agreed that if ICU is coming under more pressure more restrictions will be sought and almost certainly implemented.

    Interventions

What might that look like? Senior coalition figures want interventions designed to slow transmission, not a lockdown to stop it entirely. The argument runs that a harsh lockdown could take months to have any effect, may not be observed by people, and perhaps does as much damage as good.

Capacity limits for indoor dining, public transport, nightclubs (perhaps in exchange for removing the curfew) have all been mentioned, as have mask mandates for outdoor mass gatherings (ie, matches).

Government sources believe Nphet may mull restrictions on gatherings in the home or retail settings. But this is more a matter of speculation than policy at this juncture.

However, if the situation worsens appreciably a circuit-breaker with sectoral closures may come as the recommendation – something the politicians will hate.

I received a positive result today. I was doing a bit of work in London last week. The place is a basket case so did antigen tests when I came back. Eventually came up positive. Have very little in the way of symptoms that I would regard as being ‘unwell’. I was congested for a few hours on Wednesday and I was a bit more tired than usual on Wednesday until yesterday. But right now, nothing. It really does make you wonder how many are walking around with this at the moment.

It is difficult not to see new restrictions/a lockdown being introduced within the next few weeks. Hopefully we won’t have a repeat of last year’s Christmas debacle. But I think any lockdown would have a disastrous effect on the general psychology of the nation.

Hope I'm wrong but another lockdown like last winter will very likely lead to a lot of demands on Mental Health services this time around.

why do you say that London is a basket case? I wouldn’t agree with that at all. I’m there half my time, and would be there more if I could through these times

Hopefully just a one off day with a backlog.

Like the 5k plus a few weeks back. A lockdown would be damaging in so many ways.

So many major protests in Australia, the U.K. including London & Belfast, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Netherlands….no doubt will be attempted to be portrayed as ‘far right / conspiracy / anti vaxx by media and posters on here.

It’s almost as if some people don’t agree with society being segregated by a Vaccine passport that doesn’t curb the spread of Covid, mandatory vaccination and loss of democratic freedoms in exchange for having to line up for ‘boosters’ whenever the Professors and Government say so. And let’s not forget Austria’s directive also includes children from ages 5-12.

Of course there will be, no question about it.

There won't be a "lockdown", because the NPHET government won't call it that, they don't want to get accused of more failed lockdowns.

Instead there will be more of the curfew style restrictions where they shut businesses down without having the balls to actually do it formally.

Then they will blame the people for making them do it. Gaslighting ****.

And this is why we need to stop getting fixated on case numbers. Being healthy and double vaccinated makes covid nothing more than another winter respiratory illness for the vast vast majority.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,335 ✭✭✭jackboy

Of course, gaslighting works spectacularly. It’s a proven formula for controlling people. That and turning people on each other.

I am not an expert (but neither is Tomas Ryan) - are the high cases number in vaccinated people bringing us towards herd immunity, and this with the booster programme may mean that hospitalisation and ICU numbers should reduce naturally in January and February?

If people don’t get vaccinated then there is little we can do…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,781 ✭✭✭Knine

And if you are not healthy? Lock yourself in your house? Of course case numbers matter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭Pablo Escobar

I don’t know how I picked it up there, but I do know that they’ve basically dissed masks, excepts on transport where there’s about 50% compliance. The reason I did the antigen tests was because I wanted to be sure I didn’t pick it up because you lose the ability to control your situation there, particularly if you’re using transport.

This is true and I’m in that category. But the more cases, the more actual vulnerable will get sick and the more hospital space required. It’s not the number of cases that is the problem at this point, it’s the loss of control on the growth in cases as that will naturally drive hospital numbers. I totally agree most will be fine.

On the way down South William Street to the Xmas party in Dublin absolutely rammed in here with people in bars/restaurants and out and about. Brilliant to see the smiling not afraid faces ☺️
