This is not a post that is meant to antagonise people but last weekend I spent a weekend in Liverpool and I can only say it’s like a different planet over there . Landed early Friday morning over there and home early Monday morning . The feeling of freedom over there and utter oppression on return cannot be conveyed in words . People will say look and their mortality rate compared to ours from the outset of the pandemic and that’s absolutely true but what relevance has that to the current situation now in this moment. Nothing. There has been an incredible culture of fear spread in this country and it’s so terribly damaging . People religiously discussing case numbers hospitalisations what this might bring what that might bring . For the love of god people this has to stop . It’s utterly destructive. England has shown us there is no need for this oppression

Glad you had a good weekend away , good for you!

Now is it ok with you if people discuss Covid , numbers , hospitalisations, where it's going etc , on the main Covid thread ?

Not posting to antagonize either. Just saying .

Is our government totally out of the loop here? Covid is NOT going away, not now, not EVER. A respiratory disease like influenza doesn't ever "go away"... with over 90% of the population vaccinated then why are they talking lockdowns? With 100% vaccinations they'd STILL be talking about lockdowns, it's time to ditch the lockdowns and get on with things now.

Yes of course . It’s just my opinion that it’s an unhealthy obsession and it’s holding the country back now . I genuinely felt apprehensive about going away for the weekend . Thought long and hard about it and backed out in my mind numerous times .I have a lot of time for the opinions of posters on this thread including yourself but I think that the country has been enveloped in a culture of fear . I don’t know the answers to this pandemic but i think we have run out of rope in this country with current restrictions . They are harsh and anyone who says they aren’t isn’t being honest to themselves .

I saw tonight's Channel 4 Dispatches documentary on the lab-leak theory. A naturally-occurring respiratory virus that causes a serious disease would not be transmissible from human to human so easily.

It's a fair point. At some point we have to move on from discussion of most things Covid and move towards a closer version of life to what we had before. Unless something horrific happens then we are getting our lives back with each passing day, with blips along the way no doubt but we need to collectively move on for our own mental wellbeing.

“People religiously discussing case numbers hospitalisations what this might bring what that might bring . For the love of god people this has to stop” I agree, but I LOL’d at the fact you used religious terms there because fear and oppression are apart of our DNA… basically living with Covid in this country is in essence answering to the clergy back in the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 209 ✭✭Ah_well.

Yes I see the irony there . Lol . Just think it’s gone way way too far here .

In fairness, anyone who believed the bat story would want to get their head checked.

I haven't heard the Government mention a new lockdown, but posters post that **** and people comment on their post like the OP was the official government spokesperson.

Wouldn't be the first time that poster has made stuff up to complain about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,895 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

It just really annoys me, people complaining about stuff that may or may not happen. Probably annoyed if they have nothing to complain about. Such a shame there's no relaxation of restrictions thread!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,669 ✭✭✭Klonker

OK let's talk about facts. Why do we have one of the harshest remaining restrictions when we've also got one the highest vaccine uptake rates and a very compliant public? And why do the public still by and large support such a position?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,895 ✭✭✭Wolf359f

Let's talk about the OP making **** up about a lockdown as if it's been announced, just to get people discussing it (on the wrong forum) to further their agenda.

It's amazing how people can just make up stuff based on nothing and people fall in behind them defending it as if it's real.

Harshest lockdown compared to who? Would our higher incidence rate have anything to do with it? I think you answered your question already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,354 ✭✭✭nocoverart

I’m honestly confused here. How many people who are double jabbed are “truly” in Hospital from Covid, how many of those double jabbed are in ICU from Covid and how many are dead from Covid who were… you guessed it! double jabbed?

I’m probably a bit dim but I feel I don’t know the answers to what should be the most important questions.

Do we have the harshest remaining restrictions? Is that a fact we know? I've no idea, personally - the our world in data stringency index seems to currently have us at about the 107th strictest restrictions.. I've no idea how reliable that is, of course - what comparative studies would you recommend? https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/covid-stringency-index?tab=table

You thnk it has gone way too far where exactly ? In Ireland , all over the world, on this thread , where ?

Just because some do not want to talk about it does not mean that others are oppressed or fearful when reading or talking about it .

Some people like to switch it off, others need to understand what threatens them or discuss with others to help deal with it .

In both instances there are some people who are afraid . That is not confined to one side or the other .

In both camps there are people who want to get on with living their lives , some by putting Covid to one side , others by getting a better understanding of it .

If you don't want to hear or read about , or discuss it , the Covid thread is not a good place to be .

I agree . If that's what you want and if that's what you feel helps you , you should do that .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,706 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

@nocoverart It was given by DrCormican and Paul Reid also I think at the HSE briefing last week and also Dr Catherine Motherway talked about low numbers of fully vaccinated in I CU . Less than 10% in ICU .

Most fully vaccinated patients are not getting serious breakthrough infections unless they are already immunocompromised in some way either through an underlying condition or immunosupressant therapy .

A new lockdown won't happen, there would be civil unrest.

So here is the latest threat - jab your young people or we won’t lift restrictions further. Are NPHET and the HSE going to show us what preparation they’ve made to have our HSE ready for the coming winter? How many extra doctors + nurses have they hired to prepare for post pandemic demand and continued Covid care treatment. Surely this has been planned for? Surely NPHET and HSE aren’t just trying to keep the goalposts moving & costing us needless BILLIONS in pandemic payouts because their system remains the complete mess it was pre pandemic.

This latest threat is in direct contradiction to NIAC’s own advice which just recommends the vaccine to those living with people with weak immune systems or those children who may be high risk themselves.

How can a group of so called ‘experts’ be given the power to try and bully and coerce like this while withholding the keys to freedom with such unrealistic & from a doctor’s point of view, completely unethical ‘advice’?

I think the time has come for a fresh debate in Ireland. Have nphet, the HSE & Government decided it’s ok for younger people to take this vaccine, some die like poor Roy Butler and others be left with serious side effects such as myocarditis and other issues. The vaccines do not stop transmission so I fail to see the benefit and see huge risks.

Trial size for this age-group was just 2,000 people.

Next they’ll withhold until it’s down as far as babies. Then after that boosters. Are people going to allow this?

Nicola Sturgeon and heck even Boris Johnson are ten times the leaders we have here. They stood up, made the decisions and got on with it. Their doctors and NPHET group also seem much more reasonable and realistic.

These aren't the age group that are driving up hospital numbers. There needs a clear and honest discussion on where these new hospital cases are coming from. Because from here, it looks more and more like hse management feel its easier to keep the restrictions in place until vaccinate every last person rather than get its own house in order.

If the vaccine is as effective as they say, I find it very hard to believe that given our excellent uptake, the virus is still able to pick up the unvaccinated vulnerable people who are at risk of ending up in hospital.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,669 ✭✭✭Klonker

I really don't like this pushing of vaccines to young people with no underlying conditions. I don't know who it was, I think it was a member of the HSE or/and NPHET but she said about 2 weeks ago in an interview that an under 18 with no underlying conditions has a 1 in 100,000 chance of ending up needing hospital. So if all our healthy under 18s caught covid it would only translate to less than 10 hospitalisations. Do these people really need to be vaccinated? Would the vaccines not be better off on some third world country?

Seen that. That's why I'll now just wait to see what MM says on the 31st

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 762 ✭✭✭gral6

He'll say we are not there yet, the numbers are not where we want them to be, the next two weeks are crucial

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,038 ✭✭✭alentejo

Just wait till the argument when vaccines are authorised for the under 12's which will most likely happen later this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Nah, we're at the end of those, although the first dates will probably be a good 2-3 weeks away!

The problem with this is that "unvaccinated" will shortly include those people who's vaccine is "worn off".

The waters will be perpetually muddy if this is the case.
