Wicklow Way Relay 12th June

The Wicklow Way Relay, a fundraiser for IMRA's Junior squad, will this year be held on Saturday 12th June. Starting at Kilmashogue in Dublin, over eight legs it traverses the Wicklow Way to the finish at Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow, crossing numerous mountains and valleys along its way. Teams are made up of eight runners, to include at least two vets (40+) and two females (although other permutations are possible, see rules for details. Entry fee €15 per runner.

Commonly referred to as the best race of the year, it has become more popular each year, and there is a cut-off of 30 teams, and its likely the cut-off date will be earlier this year.

Last year we entered a team from Boards ("The Bulletin' Boards"), and will likely enter a similar line-up this year. It would be great to enter more than one team, so if you are interested in being on a Boards team, stick your name down below and we'll see what teams we can arrange. Although the route is signposted, scouting missions ("recce's") are a must, as each year teams go astray, (at all ends of the field!;)). You should be familiar/comfortable with running hilly trails, often in inclement weather- IMRA races or similar would give a good judge of ability. Ground is mostly hard trail, so no special shoes necessary.

This really is a great day out, and so much of the fun is organizing the recce's beforehand, working out where you have to be at what time, and knowing what turn to take! It'll be a blast!

Yes! I want to run the WW Relay as part of a Boards team!

If we're talking about 2 teams we need the full spread of runners to assemble that 2nd team.. 5 men (under 40s), 1 over 40, and 2 ladies. Think thats right donothoponpop?

    Not quite-
    2 ladies
+ 2 vets (40+, can be either/or M/F, same lady can't count for vet and female spot, in that you can't have a team of, say, six 20 year old males and two 40+ ladies)
+ 4 other runners (can be any age/gender), for a full complement of 8. Other permuations are possible too, for teams of lesser numbers.

To this regard it might be helpful if you put down your category (M, F, M40, F40) on the list.

IMRA rules are that you're a vet in the calender year of your 40th birthday, so I'm a vet.

You can relax,I don't intend challenging your M40 winning spots until, oh, Tonlagee or so;)

Better get my Boards singlet organised for this year. Fitness levels seem to be back to last year's levels now after a long lay-off, so I have this targeted as my main summer race. If no-one else wants leg 7, I'll take it again.

Good to see you back in a good way DBC. Happy to hook up for recces at some point. I think we could do some group recces of various legs. I think its only fair that Beepbeep sees more of the wicklow way :D

Those beautiful Rhododendrons a few k in from the start of leg 7 will be in brilliant ruby-pink bloom in a few weeks- just the thing to inspire nature-lovers up a few hills.

SJ is right, we'll have to get BB out on a few more recce's .He's under the leg 8 impression that the WW consists of a bit of cowslop and some twisty potholed roads! Looking forward to it.

Sounds good to me. I have a tourist visit to the Vienna marathon in four weeks, so a couple of weeks after that, I should be ok for a few gentle recces.

Application under way. I may have to sit-in in the passport office, but I think I should have it in time.

Did my first WWR specific training run yesterday - 31km with 1480m of ascent. I'd forgotten how much more fun it is to run uphill than on the flat.

    For real?
Did you tell her there are no toilets en route ;) - but plently of bushes.
Remember she can't get on the team without a recce
