Thanks for the tips on the hospital bags, ladies. Must get shopping for the few bits I don't have yet!

Ended up in hospital yesterday for a few hours. You know the way they say 'any bleeding at all make sure you go to hospital'. So I had the tiniest tiniest imaginable amount of bleeding (and I mean really tiny!), which had actually stopped by the time I saw the midwife. But they still said I should have come in. Always hard to know how serious something is, but as this is my first baby I am totally erring on the side of caution. Anyway, all good with the baby. They checked the heartbeat and movement and did a scan. They are so nice and patient and never made me feel like I shouldn't be there. It's funny, if it was just me I would leave it a few days and see how things progressed and then I might ring the doctor. But now that there is a baby involved I am super cautious and careful. It's funny feeling responsible for somebody else. Hmm... this becoming-a-parent-thing is interesting....

    Hi Ladies,
I really need to go shopping for my hospital bag tomorrow. Spent 4 of the last 7 nights in hospital! I will say through the midwives in Holles St are amazing! No matter how busy it is they always make time for you.

Now if this baby could give up the messing and stay cooking til Janurary, that would be great!

Fingers crossed for you little miss.

On the hospital bag - I just brought a carry-on size bag and left piles of extras at home to be brought in as needed (I was in for 5 nights). Get the big green maternity pads and bring a pack and leave a pack or two at home. If you run short they have them in there. Also I'd pick up some night-time STs to leave at home as some people bleed more than others and you might be ready to move to them. Breast-pads - I'd just pack a handful and leave the rest at home as you likely won't leak much in the earlier days. I got a couple of packs of the big black knickers from penneys - not much dearer than disposables and much more comfortable. I have them for this time too!

Wash any knickers, pjs, towels etc first as if you have a section or other stitches you don't want fluff sticking to them.

Have the lanolin cream somewhere handy and start applying it after the first feed and keep doing that even though it will feel like you're feeding every 5 minutes!

I labelled everything at home with post-its and also took photos of them on my phone so when I was telling my husband I needed x I was able to show him, as the different pads etc confused him! That might just be him though.

Baby doesn't need much - simple vests and babygros that button up the front. A small pack of nappies and have a spare pack at home. I had a summer baby last time but I'll pack one cardi this time just in case. Don't bring too much as you'll have enough to manage without having lots of stuff around your bed!

Oh one last thing - bring a notebook and pen to take notes of feeds/nappies as the midwives will ask you and I was so exhausted I couldn't remember! And some snacks - hospital feeding times are bizarre!

Thanks Mary! The photos is a great idea and labels!

I did a big shop today. Bought a stack of night dresses in penny's, they are so cheap if they don't make it home no worries.

Also bought myself a nice nightdress and gown for post baby, been admiring it since I fell pregnant :)

    Hi all,

How is everyone doing? I've finished up work now until baby arrives. My consultant thought it was best given the number of admissions I have add.

Feels odd to be off "sick" and not to be sick as such. I am following their advice on restricted activities and not carrying anything. I'm hoping it will help avoid early induction!

Almost finished exams here (yay!), feeling very big and bulky. Was turning over in bed last night and heard/felt this almighty pop somewhere in my pubic bone, walking like John Wayne today... not sure exactly what happened, but it's bloody sore! Also have my first stretch mark :)

How are you getting on at home LMC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,395 ✭✭✭pooch90

Yeowy! That sounds really painful, hope you're OK. Hurray for end of exams. I'm counting down the days to finishing work. Stressful 2.5 weeks left. 30 senior infants plus Xmas and carol services and loads of meetings just make me want to throw in the towel and say,see ya in September lads I'm outta here.

Glad someone else feels bulky. I'm kinda fed up of it now and I know its only going to get worse for the next 6 weeks :(

Jeepers, I think I'll shut up complaining about exams... fair play to you for handling a class of Senior Infants, I wouldn't be able for it even in my non-pregnant state :p Hope the next few weeks roll in quickly for you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,395 ✭✭✭pooch90

Whereas I would rather the infants to the exams!

Honestly,if my principal was in any way supportive I wouldn't be so stressed. She has decided we need a 2 hour Mindfulness seminar on Monday after school! Yuck, I can't sit anywhere for two hours, let alone after a day of 5 year olds, then rush home to go to Pregnancy Pilate's. Following day have an assessor coming to see if we are to be awarded a Green Flag for the school (I've been doing all the work for that single handed for 2.5 yrs so it all falls to me on Tuesday) then that evening we have a 4 hour antenatal session. My mother due to come and stay for few days on Wednesday. Staff night out on Friday (over an hours drive away!) I'm exhausted just thinking about the week ahead. The weather is crap and we have two big dogs who have been stuck inside because the garden is a swamp. Really needed a moan, sorry! I think I need a bath!!

On the bright side it was my birthday yesterday and hubby was lovely :)

    Apologies for the whinging!!

Yay, thanks for all the extra tips about what to bring to the hospital! Finally bought a dressing gown the other day. The one I have at home is over 20 years old (I kid you not) and was getting to the stage that I needed to throw it out anyway. Was hard to find a 'non fluffy' one in town, though. I presume the hospital will be warm and that there is not point having a big fluffy dressing gown!

Hmm... it's obvious that I don't have much on my mind since I am thinking of dressing gowns... I have been really really lucky with my lack of dodgy pregnancy symptoms. Was just thinking today, maybe that means I'll have a really crap labour to make up for the lovely pregnancy!!!

Things beginning to come together here as regards stuff we need to buy. We have a cot and we are collecting our travel system this weekend. A few bits still to get but not too much (I think!!!) The cots is now beside our bed. Strange to think there will be a baby sleeping in it quite soon.

Looking forward to finishing work for Christmas - and not going back after Christmas! Of course, the whole idea of life as I know it changing totally after Christmas is, at times, freaking me out (there have been tears!!!), but I'm sure that will all come together. I need to start looking up mother and baby groups and suchlike because I literally know nobody local who will be around during the day. Was starting to panic about that the other day, but have now given myself a good kick up the arse because in fairness I probably won't have time to be lonely in the first few months... Yeah, the whole change of life thing with the first baby is very weird. And I have been thinking about it WAY too much.

Best of luck to all over the next few weeks.

    Hodiho, January ladies...

You will be glad to know that after what can only be called a 'charmed' pregnancy, An Bhanríon is now beginning to feel a bit bleugh - heavy and sore and can't walk fast anymore. And can't concentrate at work - which is why she is on Boards!!!!

I think the 'charmed' bit of the pregnancy is ending...

Growing new little humans is tough work!

I hear you on the sore and heavy bit... it was raining cats and dogs today (still is) and I stupidly, without thinking, chanced running from the swimming pool reception to my car (grand total of 25m maybe?). Forgot the pregnancy for a second, but good lord, the sensation of a sack of potatoes nestling down in my nether regions... made it 3 steps maybe. Paying for it now...

Still keeping it together in work is impressive in late pregnancy, whether concentrating or not. I tip my hat to you!

I'm right there with you on the starting to feel a bit bleugh! Have had a really good pregnancy so far, all has been going great. Had a feeling it would catch up on me towards the end though.

Walking has definitely become difficult and feeling heavy and sore too. Another week left to go in work here, am literally counting down the hours.

    All very exciting though :)

I got signed off work early,my pelvis is at me and I'm just not able for 30 senior infants in the run up to Xmas. Have to say, today was lovely, first day off. I don't think this baby plans on staying in until mid January though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 254 ✭✭An Bhanríon

Maternity leave cannot come soon enough. Another few days left at work and I just can't wait to run out that door!!!

Trying to tie up all the loose ends at work and hand over my projects to somebody else is all just so weird. I don't think it has hit me properly yet that I won't be here in January and I had better get my skates on and get it all done. Sooo distracted...

Meanwhile in the real world of impending babyland, myself and my husband are regularly found staring at the cot, pram and car seat, and going 'Jayzus, there's going to be a baby in that soon!'

Oh I can really relate to this! We assembled the crib this weekend and it just feels weird seeing it!! Similarly we collected the buggy/pram/car seat the weekend before and now when I see it I am excited and scared!!

I hope your last few days pre- maternity leave go quickly. I was signed off work at 32+1, it really caught me by surprise but thankfully baby is fine and I'm getting used to my restricted list of activities.

    Anyone else in bits??
I think the head is starting to engage, shooting pains down below and hard to get up. Pelvis is killing me too. Keep thinking I feel slight contractions but I think I'm working myself up.

Good luck to everyone here. I was due on the 7th last year and I am here now looking at my little girl taking her first steps. It really flies by. Wishing you all safe labours and healthy new arrivals X

I wouldn't say in bits yet but my god how many times a day can I pee???

I've been seeing an osteopath since 17 weeks which is getting the pelvic pain at bay during the day but absolutely nothing helps with the agony of rolling over in bed!

I'm in the scared phase about life after baby arrives, worrying about if I will be a good mammy, how feeding will go, do I have enough clothes for baby?????

  • Registered Users Posts: 926 ✭✭✭fall

Little Miss Cutie I feel your pain. Both of mine lodged their bony knees under my ribs and it was the equivalent of broken ribs by the end but it's now a distant memory.
Try not to be scared. It is such a subjective experience that no one else will feel exactly like you do. Some things will come easily, some may be harder but just remind yourself that you have done something incredible and created another human being. The early days are full of questions because it's all so new but threads like boards are invaluable. Our group now has a Facebook page and I feel like those women are my friends. We walked the same path at the same time and it has formed a lovely bond. You are nearly there :-)

Little Miss Cutie don't worry about baby clothes anyway, you'll get tons of gifts and will soon be sighing at giant piles of tiny clothes that baby will never possibly get enough wear out of!

I was very anxious about life with baby when I was pregnant, and is much easier than pregnancy and the waiting/worrying. You'll be fine :) The important thing is though that if you need help ask for it, family, friends, or local baby/parenting groups.

Are you planning on breastfeeding? If so don't worry about this either, just read up beforehand so you know the tough bits to expect. It was easy for me from the start, obviously it was tiring and there was some discomfort and getting used to it all, but it was and is so much easier than I thought. People mostly only hear of the bad/difficult experiences. Join Extended Breastfeeding in Ireland on fb and ask any questions you have or post for support when bf, and go to a Cuidiu meet up if you can, before or after baby arrives.

Yes planning to feed baby, have started reading the womanly art of breastfeeding. There is a local breastfeeding group in the church centre that I am hoping to attend weekly. Have joined the FB group and following for hints and tips.

Thanks for the reassurance in general xx

Happy New Year everyone!! Anyone have a 2015 baby??

I definitely starting to feel more twinges and pressure from baby moving lower.

I'm 38weeks now and have a growth scan on Tuesday, based on this we will have a discussion re sweeps/induction etc....

I am definitely starting to have crazy thoughts, can't nest due to restricted activities so instead am worrying about random things like how many bibs we have!!

On that topic do breastfeed babies wear bibs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭spottybananas

Some babies spit up and need bibs, my breastfed baby didn't need a bib until he started drooling when teething. He's 8 months now and only needs bibs for teething drool and eating, outside eating we'd barely use 2 in a week, whereas my friends baby goes threw 10+ every day with spitting up and constant drool. People will buy you tons of bibs I've found, I've also found only bandana ones fit properly, lots of newborn normal bibs he got only fit him now. Dunno what size necks they think babies have!

Happy new year to the January crew. Finally starting to get a bit excited now. Due in middle of month so I just keep telling people we will have news for them by the end of the month. Less worried now than I have been over the last few months. And I have done plenty of worrying about all kinds of things! (How will I cope leaving work? Do we have enough babygros? Did we buy the wrong pram? Will I be a useless mother? The works!) I am sure I will worry some more but it's nice to be a bit relaxed too. Best of luck to us all this month! May we all have much joy and may our coping skills be out in force for those moments when we feel a little overwhelmed by it all...

We went sling shopping today, bought a lovely stretchy wrap, can't wait for baby to arrive so we can use it.

Was a really lovely time at the sling consultation, had a great laugh, learnt loads and bf is very onboard with "baby wearing".

You may have tried this but turning under in bed is so much less painful! So rather than turn by going onto your back then onto other side, put your weight on your arms and turn facing down into the bed. And keep your knees together

Angeldelight, your tummy roll advice should be stickied! Amazing, can't believe I only found out about it now!

Happy New Year to all the January 2016 girls! I'm still here and overdue, despite some fairly intense and regular cramping/sharp twinges last night that had me half-wondering if this was it. Tried to get some sleep (restless) and things seem to have subsided somewhat this morning. Although I'm wrecked and a tiny bit disheartened, trying to take it as a sign that things are happening slowly but surely (plus a chance to rest properly).

Wishing everyone health and serenity for the coming weeks.

Another vote here for the tummy roll! Amazing how these little things make life so much easier. Best of luck sambucus nigra. Hope things start to move along soon. I've one more week until my due date so it will probably be another while. For the moment that suits me fine but I will probably get impatient after a while. Wow, so hard to believe this part of the adventure is nearly over and the next adventure is about to begin!

I haven't posted in a while but my little fella arrived a few weeks early the other day. He was breech so we were scheduled for a section at 39+1 but he had other ideas (I don't think he wanted me going back to work after Christmas - my waters broke just before I got up for the first day back!).

We're doing great and hoping to get home tomorrow, best of luck to everyone!

    Congrats contrary_mary!!

My little lady finally decided to put in an appearance in the wee hours of Sunday morning at home with two of the fantastic midwives in the Cork Homebirth scheme and my husband, 8 days after her due date. Labour was intense (very little break between contractions from the get go) but progressed well and we are both doing great (although I now regret doing piles of research on labour/birth but neglecting somewhat the breastfeeding side of things - it is unexpectedly challenging!)

I hope you're all keeping well and can't wait to hear news of the other January arrivals :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,194 ✭✭✭Little Miss Cutie

    Huge congrats sambucus!!

A home birth, very exciting. I'm not due until Thursday and currently wondering if the tightness in my bump means something......

I have booked a lactation consultant to come to the house tomorrow for an ante-natal consult and she will come back on day 4/5.

How is recovery going? I imagine it was pretty nice curling up in your own bed after delivery!

  • Registered Users Posts: 254 ✭✭An Bhanríon

Wonderful news, sambucus nigra! And to have your baby at home too... All the best for the adventure ahead!

Thanks girls, recovery is going pretty well, I was very lucky to have no tears or stitches to contend with so just the usual soreness/tiredness. Being at home has been amazing, couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Lactation consultant sounds like a fab idea Little Miss Cutie, I'd say they'll be worth their weight in gold. My milk came in last night and all I can say is oweee!
Tightenings of the bump sound exciting - when will you be having the sweep? I had one on the Friday and labour kicked off for me Saturday afternoon.

LMC you're due the day before me,I'm Friday.
Thought I had a bit of a show last night as there was a teeny bit of spotting but nothing else really. Few cramps on Thursday but nothing since.
I'd be happy if I got past tomorrow as I've a few practical real life things I'd like to sort but who knows!?

There will probably always be something that you will feel is undone. Has the nesting kicked in?? I've been cleaning presses!
My biggest thing is that I have our two scruffy mutts booked in for grooming tomorrow and I'd love to have that done before baby comes home. Also,my Mam lives 130 miles away so I'm trying to rent her a house here for a month so we will all have our own space when baby comes. It's her first grandchild so I know she will want to be here for a good while but we would kill each other if she stayed with us for that long!

Yikes sounds like you have a job to find somewhere for a month!

So I had the sweep yesterday, lots of bloody discharge last night with craps, up all night to pee and then today nothing!!!!!!!! I was really hoping it might start something, I have booked in for reflexology tomorrow so maybe that will help.

Hope you're not feeling rough after the sweep. Doesn't sound very nice.

I've a lead on a house that is for sale across the road so fingers crossed that pans out.

Managed to get the doggies done today so I'm delighted.

It will be great for you to get back to normal activities after pregnancy.
