My wife tried to fool me into thinking I was drinking Nespresso a few weeks ago. But, much to her disappointment I could tell. The Lidl ones taste weaker.

Bought a couple of boxes of the Lidl ones, the coffee isn't as nice and the capsules got stuck a few ones.

The missus tried make a coffee and the capsule got stuck in our Krupts machine, when she tried dislodge it she pulled a part out instead, I had to take the machine apart to dislodge the capsule and put the part back in, now the machine runs for about a second no matter what capsule I use or button I press.

Not nice coffee, not a nice result.

Think you have been unlucky. I have found some French ones that really messed up the machine (Casino supermarket own brand), but always managed to get them out. I've had no problems with the Lidl ones.

Have used the Lidl ones, found they were constantly getting stuck in the Nespresso U. The ristretto ones were fine tasting but still got stuck

I've tried the Robert Robrts ones and although tasted better they were occasionally getting stuck. (I've cleaned, descaled my machine and they never get stuck with Nespresso ones)

I got a box of the Carte Noir pods from France, and they were amazing. They're designed slightly different that the Lidl/Roberts ones. No sticking. Great coffee.

Thing is I dont see them for sale anywhere else!

Amazon groceries. Sometimes they have them on special- normal price is around £22 for 10 boxes of 8- about 27.5p or 36c each. Not cheap- but they are nice.

Are they aluminium like the real pods?
I wonder if all these problems people are having is because the pods are plastic and the heat from the water is deforming them, causing them to stick?

No bother using the Lidl pods in my machine (Magimix) at all. Nespresso pods taste better but these are doing me fine for my morning wake up where I'm more worried about getting some energy than taste.

Ugh wish they would make the ones for the Dolche Gusto machines :D

Not aluminium but a softer plastic which curves at the end similar to the nespresso ones, out of all the non nespresso brands they look the most similar if you get my drift.
    Must check out amazon groceries!
    Cheers!

I think there are 3 things that make Nespresso coffee great.

    1. The machines, which have a high pressure process to really get the best out of a small amount of coffee.
    2. The capsules, designed to get the max quality coffee into the cup.
    3. The coffee, Nescafé clearly are coffee experts, would have access to the best farms, blends, R&D etc. Nespresso is their premium brand, so they put a lot into it.

By buying the compatible capsules, you probably get most of the benefit of #1, some of #2, and none of #3.
Yes, it's better than average coffee, but I doubt there is much blending going on here!

So for me, it's not a fair comparison.
I bought the machine, and buy their capsules, because it is the closest thing to coffee-shop coffee I can get...

In relation to the highlighted bit above. I couldnt disagree with you more. The lidl brand might be inferior to Nespresso but over time the quality from other companies making nespresso pods will sky rocket. 9 times out of 10 introducing more competition into a market will increase quality of the product on offer.

Was in carrefour market last week in France there was 10 square meters of shelf dedicated to compatibles most were actually more expensive than genuine, definitely a market to be tapped.

No one other than nespresso can use aluminium, that's the out come of the patent case.

If they're more expensive than the genuine ones- why on earth would anyone buy them? Ok- it may be convenient to pick up a pack while you're doing the grocery shopping- versus having to order the Nespresso ones online- but its still not doing anyone any favours.......

While I agree with points 1 and 2, I disagree on point 3.

There is nothing particularly special about the coffee Nespresso/Nestle use, any company can source equally good or even better coffee beans. There isn't anything magical about it, they are just ground, vacuum packed coffee beans!

While I think the Lidl pods are excellent, they are cheaper, so you might have an argument that they use cheaper coffee beans in them.

But the Robert Robert pods and others like Carte Noir are the same price or even more expensive! That should mean they can spend just as much on quality coffee beans as Nespresso.

In fact, they might even be able to afford to buy even more expensive, higher quality beans then Nespresso/Nestle, since they don't have the massive marketing budget of Nestle to pay for, nor the expensive high street stores to rent out, thus leaving more margin to be spent on coffee beans.

Really I have to laugh at people buying into Nespresso/Nestle marketing, people really seem to be falling that it is something "special" and "magical".

Don't get me wrong, it is a great machine and a great invention, it is a machine that makes good, consistent espresso, with a great deal of ease and convenience. I love it too.

But don't kid yourselves, there isn't really anything "premium" about it, that is just clever marketing and product placement.

I was drinking Nespresso long before I saw any marketing on TV, or anyone told me about it. The machine was in the office, I tried it, noticed it made some exceptionally good coffee and got hooked (literally, I drank less coffee before using it!).

The product speaks for itself if it's good enough to do this without any external marketing presence.

In fact I often defer getting a coffee in a bistro when I'm out at lunch as I typically prefer getting a lungo back in the office.

Now that would make a great ad :)

EDIT: forgot to mention, several clients of ours prefer to have meetings in our office rather than theirs simply for the sake of getting one of the coffees ;)

Ditto... never seen or heard of Nespresso until I tried one. Loved it, bought one, happy days. All I've seen since then is the George Clooney ad, nothing else.

Not keen myself on the Lidl capsules. For me they're just not as nice as Nespresso's own, bitter and less tasty. Convenient to buy though.

Clearly some people are taken in by the marketing and think the actual coffee in the pods is somehow "special" or "premium"

It's not far off. As I mentioned I prefer a Nespresso to some of the coffees I get in bistros in Dublin... although ultimately I prefer the coffee I prepare at home. It's saying something that a trained barista is required to beat the flavour of Nespresso (imho).

Also would George Clooney ever lie to us?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,939 ✭✭✭maxwell smart

I personally love the coffee from my Nespresso and think the Lidl pods are a poor substitute. But that is my opinion.

I would reckon that a hell of a lot of resources go into making Nespresso the best taste it can be but within the economies of scale that are present in that business.

I have had several coffee's in some of Dublin's supposed top coffee shops including 3FE and coffee angel etc.

In my opinion only coffee angel is better than Nespresso. To me it is all about the smoothness and Nespresso has it.

As for George Clooney lying, in fairness to him, he is one of the more ethical 'stars' out there and I think he would not put his name to something that he wasn't happy to endorse.

Id say he was very happy to endorst it alright when its worth 40 million dollars to him. Its coffee hes endorsing, not the Ebola virus. Ethics go out the door.

What makes you think hes such an ethical guy anyway? Nestle have had a huge number of controversies over the years.

Someone ethically obsessed wouldn't take a cent off Nestle to begin with so I think we can throw that one out the door.

He did it for the very significant sum of money he was paid - same as every other celebrity endorsement. Ever.

So genuine = better .. theres more to coffee than nestlés homogenised take on it.

There clearly is something special about the pods and they are definitely more premium quality than other options. Marketing or no marketing they are the best around. Far better taste and smoothness than any of the other options. So maybe it's the pods that set them above the cheaper options.
I would also suggest that the coffee is of a higher quality than any of the cheaper knock offs

I'd agree with the first part - but coffee from decent coffee shops will be better. However coffee is like wine - and what some people love, others will hate and some blends suit a certain palate.

A coffee shop standard 12oz cup will / should have 16-18g of ground coffee, a nespresso pod is 6-7g, but one pod is recommended for 110ml (just under 4oz). So to get to coffee shop taste and size you almost need 3 pods.

Where I am, we have a coffee shop in our premises that serves Java Republic and staff are charged €1.50 a cup. We have nespresso in the canteen and its free. (commercial nespresso with 8g discs)

We have 14 staff in the building - and I'm probably the only one that uses the nespresso and that's mainly because I'm in before the cafe staff start working!

So whilst nespresso is very good and a great easy and clean way for a decent cup of coffee at home or office (and beats the lidl one hands down) - it doesn't come near the good coffee shop coffees and particularly Java Republic.

Looks interesting all right. I would like to hear a report before I would buy 100 of these.

I've been using the Lidl ones a fair bit now, along with Planteur de Tropiques from France. Have to admit that the latter (and also the genuine Nespresso pods) are better, but it is very handy being able to get the Lidl ones with the regular grocery shop. But yes, when I go to France, I will probably stock up again.

My supply went dry at the weekend. Withdrawal symptoms yesterday.

Ordered 200 capsules direct from Nespresso today.. no more Lidl average crap for me. The fella who sits beside me in work has been stealing my last few Lidls when I was working from home the last few days. He can have 'em.

    Job jobbed.

I tried these capsules but they got stuck in my Nespresso Coffee Machine. I also tried capsules I bought on a Groupon Deal but they also got stuck and damaged my machine.
Going to stick with Nespresso Capsules from now on. Not worth the risk

I looked at those Groupon ones, and thought they might stick in the machine - some of the French ones do too, but I've figured out which ones work and which ones don't. I have had no problems with the Lidl ones, to be fair.

Our machine in work struggled pumping the water through the Lidl capsules. What I typically would do was break the seal, then eject the capsule, then pop it back in to create a second seal break and this would help with the water flow through the capsule.

Just saw this in today's Indo-

Nespresso to open new boutique store on Dublin's Duke Street.......

Might make life a little easier. Wonder if they'll start to do the pod recycling programme here too?

I heard this ages ago - they had a planning application in, and I think there was some row with the planners about the colour of the brick facing they wanted to use.....must have got sorted. Good to hear.

Seems strange having it so close to Brown Thomas so it won't really make too much difference to most punters I would imagine. Maybe the intend to move staff across from BT?
After a few months trying them out I agree with those who say it's grand but not as nice as Nespresso. For me they will be a backup option but I'll stick with Nespresso for now.

They've had the pod recycling in the BT's boutique for a few years now, I always bring in my bag of empties.....

I had heard about a new boutique opening in the Creation Arcade after it's rebuild, but assumed that the one in BT's would close when the new one opened.

Now that is interesting. The only machine I have experience of is the pixie - I have one and a friend does also - that is the smallest (and I think cheapest also) model they do. So I have no experience of other models.

These are now reduced to £0.89p in the UK so should be the same here soon. In Switzerland Lidl sell a Martello Brand compatible and in Italy they don't bother even trying to sell pods.
