Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If shes playing just basic minecraft thats ok. If shes playing bigger maps and custom stuff she might find it a bit slow. We tried it here on a i3 with a HD4000 and it was just so so. Much better with a proper gfx card.

Unfortunately I think custom maps etc will be utilized on the machine. She currently uses my laptop and is forever downloading the latest maps from Swampy

Is it expensive to upgrade the graphics card on the Dell further on down the road?

Can't be done unfortunately. Would a small PC work out better for her?

I doubt this has a graphics card per se, rather it has a Graphics chip on the motherboard or the CPU and memory has an allocation dedicated to Graphics.

So, you wont be able to upgrade it.

One of the reasons its so cheap is that Dell buy in Motherboards from Intel with a lot of the Systems already on board, needless to say, these won't be top of the range. but adequate for many tasks.

Its cheaper because they've stripped all but the minimum of features and it's an atom rather than a full Celeron or Pentium. But its still great deal for 200. Perfect for browsing and office stuff.

Unfortunately not, Santa is definitely bringing a laptop, lack of space being one of the reasons.

Not knowing much about pc's/laptops I was working on the presupposition that more processing power=better minecraft play.

Working with that, there is a Lenovo laptop in powercity with 2.41 ghz (and dvd drive lol) for €299, with intel hd integrated graphics (whatever that means).

Toms Hardware do a monthly graphics card value round up. They always have a hierarchy chart and have started including CPU-integrated graphics.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html

You can match the laptop's processor to is integrated graphics unit here:

    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units

(Probably looking at the 7th generation section at this stage)

I don't think its in that list. Search for N2830

Not necessarily. I've a 15 year old 15.4" Dell going strong here- and my main computer is a 10 year old Acer 8970G (with a gigantic 18.4" screen).......

They're normally a lot more reliable than you give them credit for.......... (providing you take reasonable care of them)........

What's the chances of this dell dropping down to less than €230 in the next week or two? Probably none?! €230 was my limit.

Can I ask how this laptop stacks up against my current one?

    Hp pavilion dm4 beats edition.
    i5
    8gig ram
    Etc.

It has gotten really slow lately and I've to keep opening it up to clean the fan. It gets very very hot and it can't even run something like Google chrome without the fan going absolutely nuts inside it.

    Would this be an upgrade?

You need to blow out the inside as it is full of dust i had the same problem but now i could live it on all day & it stays luke warm. My fan used to come on after 10 min & stay on i used a car tyre compressor ( cig lighter ones ) to blow it out .

Update all you drivers first, if you're already taking the fan out are you removing the heatsink too? Clean off old thermal paste and reapply fresh paste , tighting the screws in order. If it's still going to 100% replace the fan.

Your own laptop is a lot better than this.

    I'd second this.
I bring my laptop with me to the local garage once every 3-4 months- and use the air hose on it. You'd be startled at how much crap you can blow out of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,284 ✭✭✭homingbird

Might be a better buy to head to halfords & buy your own as you wont be under any time pressure with people waiting to use pump & also handy if you have a flat tyre on a dark wet night.

Or ? you could buy a tin of compressed air and use that, by the way what psi does your laptop take? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Nforce

Careful when running a compressor to clean out the laptop fans. Be sure to prevent the fan from spinning (use a paperclip to jam it ) as the spinning fan becomes a generator and could induce a voltage spike to the motherboard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,284 ✭✭✭homingbird

Cig lighter ones are the safest as they only blow as strong as a can of air.

    http://outlet.euro.dell.com/Online/SecondaryInventorySearch.aspx?c=uk&l=en&s=dfh&cs=ukdfh1&puid=771f2102

It's 135£ but that's before vat and delivery.

It comes down to 235 euro for a refurb, or 182£ incl vat and delivery to the UK. 10 pounds less for a 'scratch & dent' one. Not worth the cost difference to new for me. With parcel motel charges included you're only saving around 10 euro.

And Is there a knack to getting the 10% off code to work. Registered on that publicjobs thing for the code but won't take it off on the Dell site.

Getting to the fan on a Dell laptop, or at least mine, feels like bloody murder. I would need to open up and remove EVERYTHING to get to it, going by a youtube video.

Mine isn't under warranty any more, I've had it two years. I'm just saying I wanted to dust the fans but they require disassembling everything else.

If you're isn't this laptop, its completely irrelevant to the thread. A lot of laptops are hard to disassemble. Which is why people blow compressed air though the vents.

Sorry, I was just giving advice, I guess I was looking in the thread as I own a similar model. I didn't think blowing through the vents was a good idea though, I thought that wouldn't actually get the dust out...

it doesn't. I have to get cotton buds at mine to take the actual dust off the fans.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

Compressed air, should get the bulk of the dust out and clear the vents. You have to be aware of condensation when using compressed air. So machine off and let it evaporate etc.

Its the vents and heatsinks, you are cleaning. Fans, heatsinks always seem to have a layer of dust, even in a newish machine, probably static. If you have spillage and the dust gets damp then it might go glue like and air won't move it. Then you'd have to open it up, and clean out fans and heatsinks.

I've yet to see any laptop that was easy to get at the fans of any make. As laptops get smaller and lighter its harder to take them apart.

I did the same job on my Dell Vostro last year. Bought a few beers, the parts and lined up a tutorial on the tablet.

Took a while but actually a very easy job.

My old dell takes me about 20~30 mins. I've done it about 4 times over the years.

Anyway, I don't think Dells are any different to other makes. That was the point I was making.

unless you are playing games or editing videos this laptop is very good. Had a look at my father's one the other day zips along doing basic tasks. Looks very well and has an impressive build quality.

It really depends on what you're looking for- as the others have alluded to.
If you want a bit more performance- but aren't willing to pay a commensurate price for it- you're probably better off going with a Lenovo- they historically give very good spec/price ratios. God help you if anything goes wrong though- it'll have to be sent off to the repair centre in Germany- the one in Northern Ireland and the one in Liverpool- are both gone. Medion got the repair contract for them (where-ever they are).

If you do want a better spec'ed machine- be prepared to pay for it. This Inspiron 15 isn't going to set any performance records- but its a damn good piece of hardware at a damn good price (even at 249)

my wife got this Dell for college work and I watched Netflix on it. I can't see anything wrong with it. I would imagine a lot of people will find this laptop perfectly capable for what they need. long battery life compared to our old laptop. before i bought i asked people's advice on what to go for and they all way over spec what you actually need. We don't do gaming etc.
