E90 BMW M5s are electronically limited to 155mph. That electronic limiter can be removed with a very simple electronic rewriting of the cars ECU (BMW dealerships offer this service to their customers, as do most good independent BMW specialists). The theoretical top speed then exceeds 185mph.

For obvious reasons I won't get into what can / cannot keep up with a 155 mph vehicle, let alone a 185mph vehicle.

Doesn't matter what speed a car can do, once Dopey Joe in his Primera pulls out into the overtaking lane at 100kph in front of an M5 doing ***kph there's only 2 possible outcomes - the M5 is slowed down, or the crash disables the M5

Thats the older M5 so you could only imagine how things play out with the e60 model.

There was a M5 stolen about 2 months ago and afaik it was never seen again. Pretty sure it wasn't used in jobs around the country.

Remember hearing a story years back about an army officer in the 70s who had his car stolen. A Mercedes, back when Merc was considered a high value car. He never saw it again.. until...

He was operating a checkpoint in Lebanon and saw a similar age and version Mercedes approaching. Wrong colour though. Until he spotted a dent on the front wing that he had made while reversing out of his drive. One of those little marks that are more trouble than they are worth to repair. What were the chances that Lebanese local would have the exact same height obstacle to catch on? On closer inspection during search the car was revealed to have been repainted.

It was the original car, and the new owner had bought it legitimately, soon after it had been stolen, in a country about 2000 miles away!

    True story.

Not actually sure. They could have been actors. They were given a loan of ERU outfits, and I think the jeeps may have been rented with blue lights stuck on for the film.

There was big discussion of this when the film was being made, the answer is a big fat NO. Seriously...I dont know how this thought even entered people's minds???

It costs so much to run a film set that there's no way they would dream of relying on people who aren't actors .

What is the HSEs thinking in terms of Subaru Foresters, what do they bring to the party that other 4 x 4 type yokes don't.

Price is the only reason I can think off (oops I think I may have answered my own question :D).

4 wheel drive Estates like Octavia Scout - might be a better option - no????

It was a 2007 2.5L V6 Petrol, about as good as it gets when it comes to AGS Mondeos, speeds in that pursuit reached 200km on the N7 from Naas to Newlands Cross. Gardai did well to stop the car without injury or worse. Stingers were deployed before Newlands, then Organised Crime Unit rammed the stolen KIA Sportage 4X4, ERU pounced with guns out.

I just noticed on etenders that AGS are looking for 3 large family cars, second hand at that.
Just wondering why, maybe their friends up North might have a few knocking around.

Would love to know - what the real saving would be on buying new.

    And why buy 2nd hand.

Maybe if they are high performance 530d/3.0 TDI Audi Quattro types - carefully checked out and bought through Audi or BMW - it may be okay.

But if your dealing with Audi and BMW - then why not buy new :confused::confused:

Can't see any logic in buying normal Mondeo type cars 2nd hand.

I would associate a family car as more of a people type carrier, you know the ones the mummies bring the kids to school in.

Where as a Jeep is a 4 x 4 ( I know certain yummy mummies still bring kids to school in these yolks as well)

Ps there was no mention in the tender that they had to have D reg's was there? A few KY's and CN's would be refreshing.

I suppose they have identified a family type 4 door saloon as the car they want.

My point about the Audi and BMW - was that if they were using the 2nd hand route to get cars with very good performance - and they were bought okay through a main dealer - ie Approved Used type cars - then that could make sense.

But 2nd hand makes no sense if its operational car.

Good point - but I suppose they hardly need to advertise to the world that they've bought 3 Mondeo saloons from some ford dealer somewhere.

Or even that they are Mondeos :).

Its a strange one - 3 is so low a number youd be wondering what is the point.

As I said earlier - if they needed a few high performance cars - it could make sense that they be bought 2nd hand with low mileage if bought correctly and cars well chosen (ie excellent condition).

But id still say it could be done with new cars.

Maybe this is something they are considering doing more off to address a shortage of cars - and are testing the water to see if it could work.

I don't think its a good idea - frankly if the state wants to buy 2nd hand vehicles - let it be for non emergency vehicles - like company cars for big high up managers and the like.

Could get great life out of managerial company cars if you insisted on having the 300,000 kms life that's expected from Garda cars.

Surely if they are looking for high powered cars they would have set that out in the requirements! Instead it seems the size is more important ?

My apologies - I was illustrating a potential scenario where buying 2nd hand could make some sort of sense. Was trying to get my head around why they would buy 2nd hand

As you say correctly - the size is the main requirement along with age (less then 4 years old) and mileage (less then 60,000 kms)

So if someone offered 3 1.8 tdci Mondeos with 50,000 kms - theyd have met the tender requirement if the cars were in decent order and at a price AGS were willing to pay:)

That's my interpretation of the tender anyhow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭Capri

Surely the new price, VRT/VAT free, would be similar to what they'd be paying from a dealer for a 3y/o model. Maybe they're just after the optics to the general public of the 'Gardai save money on fleet' headlines - only for it to be revealed down the road that the were paying the same for a 3y/o car as they would for a more servicable new car :P:P

Its a good point - common sense would suggest that since VRT is paid to the state - and An Garda Siochana - is part of the state - that Garda cars could simply be bought at a price that excludes VRT.

However - I fear that this being Ireland - the Gardaí have to buy the cars with VRT included in the price - which then goes to Revenue.

Would love to know the actual situation though - as you say if the cars were bought new without VRT being paid - you've lost most of the saving that the 3 year old car would bring.

What are the chances that this tender is aimed at second-hand cars previously lent to AGS for recent VIP visits ... These high-end cars could be destined for senior members/special duties or to have in place for other visiting dignitaries. That or they're for undercover work. But I'd have thought there'd be other means for acquiring undercover vehicles.

So do you think the vehicles exist already and the tender is just to formalise their acquisition?

It's just speculation on my part, but that's how these things work.

Manufacturer/dealer says: remember those three large [luxury] family cars we lent you last year?

Management: You mean the three vehicles generally referred to in the industry as a ‘D’ or ‘Large Family' segment class type in a 4-door Saloon.

Manufacturer: Yes, the D, or large family, segment class. They're about 3 years old and they have less than 60,000kms on the clock.

Management: Sure I know the previous owner.

Manufacturer: These yokes are in showroom condition and conform to our specifications. You can come and have a look at them whenever you like.

Management: Nice. What are you looking for them?

Manufacturer: We'll give you them for x euros a piece.

Management: Bargain. But we've to throw an auld quick tender out there, just to keep things above board. But sure, who'll match that deal.

Manufacturer: That'll do, we can get them to you within the week. After we've valeted them, of course.

    Management: Lovely stuff.

Tender: This is a procurement for the supply up to three vehicles generally referred to in the industry as a ‘D’ or ‘Large Family” segment class type in a 4-door Saloon. The vehicles must be Pre – owned but cannot be older than 3 - 4 years, and should have less than 60,000 kms travelled before delivery.
