Last week was a good week for me. I then went through a few days that I was eating everthing bad. It my time of the month so I was up a few pounds today.
I have already made an eating plan for the next few days and have done some shopping for this.

    Down another 3lb, that's 10.5 in 3 weeks :) Definitely glad I started when I did!

So the quinoa goujons are a big hit!
I rinsed half a cup of quinoa in a fine sieve (to get rid of a bitter taste) then cooked it in a cup of salted water (just brought it to the boil, then reduced the heat to lowest setting and left covered for 20mins until a bit fluffy and water all absorbed). Left it to cool on a plate while I cut some turkey breast steaks into strips (3 packs for €10 in Dunnes, I used 2 packs). I mixed a teaspoon of Cajun seasoning with a tablespoon of flour and tossed the turkey strips in this to coat, then dipped each one first in egg wash (1 large egg beaten with about 2 tablespoons of milk) and then in the quinoa. I put the goujons on a baking tray lined with parchment and sprayed with frylight (I suspected the quinoa would stick to the tray otherwise!), then sprayed the goujons with more frylight and seasoned with salt and pepper. Baked at 220 celsius for about 25 minutes, turning once.
Served with SW chips and roasted butternut squash and a rocket and lambs lettuce salad, this was the nicest dinner I've had in ages!
Lovely savoury taste from the quinoa, I actually prefer it to breadcrumbs. Quite crunchy.

Lads, I'm disgusted with myself. I started my new job a month ago and I have gone completely off the rails. I'm back up half a stone and I feel rotten. I'm off on my holiday next week, which was supposed to be my incentive for keeping at this, but I've buggered it up.

Now I'm going to have the airport panic of "will the seat belt close?" then a week of covering myself up because I feel like a beached whale.

I overheard a new colleague making a joke about how the head of HR is fat and that's why all the new people are fat (3 of us started at the same time, none of us small...) I know I need to ignore **** like that but I'm just so disappointed in myself. I was doing so well :(

    Bleh.

I need a kick in the bum!

You need to go easy on yourself.
The person making jokes about HR hiring people because of their body type is a dick.
If he/she said anything like that in my presence I'd remind him that I can lose weight, but he'll still be a small-minded, sanctimonious little prick.
Starting a new job is hard - it's stressful. It's understandable that you didn't stick to your eating plan for the first while, as you had other things on your mind.
Now you have a great excuse to get back on track: ease yourself into it when you're on holiday, following the plan in as much as you can, and give yourself a day or two of unchecked indulgence and relaxation.
Before you go, maybe you could cook a few SW friendly meals for the freezer so that you can get right back on plan after your holiday?
If the seat belt is uncomfortable, politely ask for an extension - they're very often needed, it's totally normal and acceptable to request one.
Above all, have a lovely holiday! You've put in a lot of hard work, you know the basics of the plan and you know it works so you know you can make it work for you again ;)
    Bon voyage!

+1 to what Dee said but on the seatbelt issue, my waist was around 50 inches when I went on holidays last and I just about squeezed into it :) slight bit more slack on Aer Lingus. So that might give you an idea :)

Oh might try this at the weekend - there's some quinoa in the press! :)
I use a microwave rice cooker for quinoa (and rice lol) at it always comes out lovely and fluffy. Got it in homestore I think it was around €10 http://sistemaplastics.com/products/microwave/rice-steamer

Hmm might invest, I'm crap at cooking rice and my quinoa was less than fluffy too!

Hello everyone, I'm new... have never done SW before so don't know the first thing about it. Going to join a class next wk and will read through this forum also for tips. Really want to lose 3 stone, not sure how long that should take me but I need to get cracking, getting married in 15 months so surly this is the best motivation I could have! Have tried various diets in the past, I start great and then just get bored so will really try to keep my focus this time!

Best of luck. SW is good because it trains you to eat healthily instead of simply dieting. You can eat tons and tons of food, as long as you're eating good freshly prepared food. If you like cooking, then SW will be a doddle for you.

15 months is a long time; roughly 65 weeks. So if you're looking to lose 42 pounds you'll be done in no time with even a pound a week loss.

Was down 4lbs this week - totally shocked as my scales at home says something completely different, in fact only 2lbs down... anyway off on holidays next week so hopefully will maintain (lose if im lucky, but dont mind maintaining)

I lost 2 lbs tonight so that brings me to 4 st 5 ½ lbs with Slimming World and 6 stone 3 lbs overall! I was considering SP but I think EE just works for me, I have consistent results so I don't think I will change...

Hopefully I can finish week 2 of the couch to 5k tomorrow morning if I drag myself out of the bed & if the weather behaves! 1.5 lbs to go till I get my 4 & 1/2 stone award, hoping I get that next week! :)

I have the munchies all week since I've been back from hols and so busy in work which I think is adding to it. If I have my normal breakfast of porridge, yogurt and berries at home can I potentially have something free in the canteen a couple of hours later if I'm hungry in work - boiled egg, rasher etc. I think yes because it's free so technically food optimising... but it just seems wrong from calorie counting days before SW lol!

Technically yes of course but as you won't know the way they are cooking it, there are probably syns for the oil in the rasher etc. My consultant recommends to eat every 2 and 1/2 hrs or so

I have a mid-morning snack every day to keep me going between breakfast and lunch at work (and I have a pre-bed snack too!) - usually involves fat free Greek yogurt, fruit, carrot sticks, hifi bar, meat of some kind... as long as you stick to your one third speed, you can eat as many times per day as you like.
I eat every 3 or 4 hours, because I get hungry every 3 or 4 hours. You need to eat whenever you're hungry.
I bring an actual tote bag of food to work with me :D I'm the proof that starving yourself, irregular meals, calorie counting etc don't work - I've lost 3 stone 9 pounds in the past 37 weeks and I've never eaten more food in my life!!!

Up a pound. Was so shocked I actually asked the lady to weigh me twice, convinced it couldn't be right. Low syns and low carbs all week- about 2/3 speed every meal.

I was completely devastated but I can actually see it on myself- I was leaving my OH to work yesterday and even said to him with the week I've had I should be down 2, but I bet I'll be up. He called me crazy and said there's no way as he's seen what I've been eating but here we are, twice as far from target as I was 2 weeks ago.:( :(:(

Try not be too hard on yourself. Sometimes our bodies just do funny things. If you have been on plan it will show next week.

Ive had weeks where i should be up and i was down and vice versa. So try not to worry. It is disheartening esp when you stay on plan, but i think our bodies just dont want to cooperate all the time lol.

I think it was yourself who posted earlier in the thread that sometimes looking at it monthly is a better indicator.

Without being all blokey about it, women's bodies are pretty much unexplainable :P

Look at how far you've come overall mejulie. A little blip like this is nothing really.

That's what I usually think when it's unexpected, but I swear I can actually see it (or maybe I am going crazy) so I can't count on it for next week. Not going to be so strict this time, going to have some choc every day, and pasta, and keep going.

At the end of the day the plan works, having lost over 2st. It's the heartbreak when 2.5st was 3lb away, and now it's 6 :(

I've had a terrible week - just felt exhausted from stress in work and craving the junk I had last week on hols!! I did stick to plan though - even having an unplanned Chinese one of the nights I didn't get home from work until 8:30 but it was covered with my syns! Honestly I'll be happy as long as I don't gain this week. It's it funny how quick we can pile on the pounds and then how bloody slow they can be to come off!

I pretty much have my 15 syns every day and I enjoy them without feeling guilty! In my group there have been people who cut down on syns thinking they'll get a bigger weight loss but it never seems to work out that way for some reason!

Low carbs/SP plan doesn't work for everyone - my losses are consistently better when I've had pasta a few times in the week, and used all or most of my syns daily - in fact this week I was down 3 pounds after going over my syns limit at least 3 times, whereas the week before I was 'very good' (i.e. borderline depriving myself of syns and carbs because I felt bad for going off plan slightly for 3 meals over the weekend) and gained a pound... You have to remember that 'being good' on SW means eating enough - I know we tend to focus on the 'one third speed' thing, but the other two thirds free is just as important... I've seen it with people in my group, too much speed food and not enough free food just doesn't work.
I'm sorry if I sound preachy but I was actually just thinking about that before I read your post! I bet you will have a greater loss next week if you ease up on yourself and use your syns, it goes against every diet we've done before but the beauty is that it works, yay!

Karma's a bitch - I was laughing last week at a post I saw on another SW message board where a lady posted in a panic because she'd eaten a full 500g pot of what she thought was fat free Greek yogurt, but was actually full fat... guess what I bought this evening, emergency snack after a day of not eating enough? Yep. Knew the second I stuck my spoon in it! Can't get over how salty it was, too! Fat free is much nicer!

Guys I'm new to the SW thing, can I ask about syns, can you save up your daily syns for a few days or do you need to eat them that day or not at all? My leader said maybe for a special occasion but not to make a habit of it, also can you earn extra syns by exercising? I walk about 5 miles most days, surely that's worth something extra (she said hopefully...!!)

No, you don't get extra syns for doing more exercise. Slimming World is more focused on the eating plan side of things, getting you into the habit of filling up on free food and having your treats too - you certainly shouldn't be hungry, and there are lots of free foods that feel like a treat, for example lots of people love the Mullerlight yogurts many of which have no syns, and I love fat free Greek yogurt which tastes very indulgent.
Saving up your syns isn't recommended, but for special occasions there's something called 'flexisyns' where you decide in advance that you will have up to a set number of syns on that particular day (for example, a lady in my group was talking about setting herself a limit of 70 syns for the day of a family wedding, and I think it was 35 syns for the following day so she could indulge in some hangover food!) but you don't compensate by having fewer syns another day, you just carry on as normal. Obviously you couldn't do this every week as your losses would suffer and it would make it harder to settle into a routine but it's a good safety net to keep you in control rather than having a total blowout.
    Welcome to SW :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭Dolbert

Tranceypoo, I'd only do that out of necessity rather than planning it iykwim? Best to plan to stay within your syns on the day of a social occasion, keep track rather than guessing and pull back over the next day or two if need be. I know personally if I was 'saving' syns I'd have a blowout mentality which is what we're trying to change. It's working for me so far anyway.

I buy Liberte in Dunnes, Tesco or Supervalu. It's often on special offer at €2 for a 500g tub. Fage is also nice but beware, their fat free and full fat yogurts come in almost identical pots (as I found out on Sunday!!). Dunnes do their own brand one but I think it's not as thick and luscious.
Stick with SW for a while and you'll find yourself enjoying your regular meals more and depending less on your 'syns'; I've always been a chocolate and cheese fiend and assumed I'd have a pizza blowout within my first few weeks and the odd hot chocolate (another old love of mine) without counting syns etc but to be honest my tastes have changed, I think I had one day since September when I really craved pizza and instead I made myself a big bowl of 'free' pasta and sauce and enjoyed it so much more, I haven't had (or wanted) a hot chocolate, and I can have a bit of cheese as my healthy A choice any day I want... I don't drink regularly but you can definitely fit in a few drinks with slimline mixers within your syn allowance, and as long as you don't use too many syns in your regular meals you can afford to have a full size bar of chocolate within your syns every day if you want to.
SW isn't about deprivation, give yourself a chance and you really will begin to enjoy it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭Dolbert

Totally agree deemc! I'm amazed that I haven't had the urge to 'go mad', I honestly think it's because I'm eating so much and am never hungry unlike other weight loss plans!

Supervalu has ff greek, the Liberte is absol amazing!! So creamy.

Welcome to SW, its fab. Just shout if you have any other queries. The others have answered the Syns thing and you don't get extra for exercising.

It can take a few weeks to totally get your head around it so bear with it and try and find what types of food works for you.

I never used to eat yoghurts but do all the time now. Sometimes mixed with fruits, porridge or SW pancakes.

I generally go with the Aldi "brooklea" fat free Greek Style strawberry yoghurt. Sometime the Muller light vanilla with dark chocolate bits. Both taste different of course

No idea if they'd suit anyone who loves yoghurts but I enjoy them.

I usually have the toffee muller light for breakfast with fruit- less boring and just as good.

Speaking of yogurts, I got a free Glenisk yogurt today in Fresh..

Authentically Strained Greek Style Coconut Yogurt- 0% fat.

It's obviously new as it's not on the app or even the Glenisk website. And it's gone! Think it would be free?
