Ferretone, it doesn't happen often, I have dry food in a large locked food bin.
He sleeps upstairs, but can creep around due to no doors and funny layout of house.

He's just a thief, he steals all kinds of stuff, not just food, socks, slippers, dustpan brushes, hair brushes, all end up hidden around the house or garden, no damage done.

But occasionally he fancies a midnight snack, past snacks have included sardines or other tinned fish, a stick of butter left on worktop, bag of frozen broccoli and a bag of Donegal catch (at different times taken from shopping bag), fajita mix, and 4sweet Romano chillies.
We just have to be careful not to leave stuff within reach or easily accessible.

He's a cheeky little sod, but we love him.

    As for the teenager.....

She'll be off to college at some stage... ;-)

Washed my two last night. Disaster. Put the puppy in the bath. Little attention seeker was terrified but didn't want to jump out because of all the attention he was getting. So he settled for laying his head on my shoulder while I half drowned myself trying to rinse him.

Then it was daddy dogs turn. Had to carry him into bath, was terrified too but got lots of kisses and hugs and talking to, so he sat down and was ok. Had to lock the puppy out because he was jealous the big dog was getting attention. He was at the bathroom door howling to get in, then off he went to get into mischief, I heard a bang and the puppy was roaring.

Had to leave Ben in the bath and go see was the puppy ok . By the time I got back to Ben, he was out of the bath and shook himself all around the bathroom. Shampoo suds everywhere and floor like a swimming pool. So I took off my clothes, got into the shower with him and rinsed him off in the shower, let him shake himself in the shower. Much better and much handier. Will be giving Ben showers in future.

Then they went and lay in front of the coal fire which dried them and we all had a lovely night!

Trying to teach Alli how to open the back door to make life easier for my mam, so far Shes standing up, hitting the handle with her paw and barking at it... Getting there :pac:

I bought Alli a new plastic bed which moone has bullied her out of! So now I've to go buy moone a bed of her own. I'll have to buy her the same size one because she'll go for allis bigger one, typical terrier :o

Sounds like lots of great shenanigans have been going on in all our animal-crazy houses this bank holiday :D Ours involved our lovely, wonderful, pensioner neighbour getting back after almost 3 months holidays around Russia, China, India, and southern Africa.

Naturally she had many tales to tell, many cups of tea to drink, and a vegetarian meal to be served up to all of us by my darling husband. And of course that meant our mostly house-trained puppy delivering indoor wees now and again, despite us taking her out regularly, just as we always do. Oh the joys of puppies

This neighbour is just the biggest dog-lover though, so of course she totally understands about puppies, and thought Nyssa was just the loveliest thing  She lost both her beloved old sighthounds earlier in the year (both aged 13). It's just weird seeing her in her house without one, but a plan is in motion, so hopefully she will have one again very soon :)

I turned the heat on for a while as Toby's mouth is sore and he'd just come in out of the rain, now Felix wants the door open so he can sit in it and let the warm air out. I'm taking Toby to the vet to get his mouth checked, it's been sore since his fight with Felix last Thursday but I thought it'd been getting better but it's obviously hurting him and he's not eating much dry food. He loves his dry food over pretty much every thing. Hopefully it's nothing too serious. I'd rather over-react and get him checked than leave it. Why do these things happen at bank holidays.:(

Why do these things happen at bank holidays.:(

You know I was only saying the same thing yesterday!! We've a had a broken dew claw, gastro bugs, ulcerated eye, oral tumour, lameness, limp tail etc etc etc - always on a BH and just as our vet closes so we have to go to the afternoon clinic at the other practice!

    Hope he's feeling better soon!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭Pumpkinseeds

Well nothing too major going on with Toby, his gums are inflammed and look sore so he got something to make him more comfortable and he's having his teeth cleaned next week. We're taking Poppy in for her booster the same day. She's as bad as Jazzy for getting to the vet, dear God, I think I'll need a valium that day:D

Elly is a nightmare when it comes to stealing boxes, tissues, paper etc....
We are trying to train her to drop it by telling her 'leave it', rather than turning it into a game chasing her!

Anyway she stole a small white box out of the recycling and was having a good chew when I noticed her, my son noticed at the same time and went to pick up the peices she had dropped. I 'shouted' leave it and they both dropped what they had at the same time!! Didn't realise I was training them both:D

Lucy has this mad looking toy (can't remember the name to post a link) but it's like a rope body with flat head, hands and feet that are crinkly. Nearly every time we hear her playing with it in another room we assume she's ripping up paper/plastic and run in telling her to leave it leaving her very confused lol!!

For anyone going to the pet expo this year, there's going to be a TICA cat show at it :) Entries are still open if anyone wants to enter a kitty! Unfortunately we won't be there as Peach and Cream don't really like TICA and Dude isn't able to show anymore, but I think it's a nice addition to the pet expo, especially for those disappointed with the lack of cats last year!

    Oh I'm so Nosey!!
The frustration of living with someone who ignores the dogs when they're not behaving.

DBB gave me some great advice to help with Harleys excessive person licking. He's doing brilliantly with me, the odd slip up but only when he's really excited, and I can see him check himself now :) little sweetie.

I walked into sittin room to find my husband sitting there ignoring while harley air licked all around him, right up in his face. Apparently he won't stop and it's in his nature and it makes no difference to try train him out of it. Aargh - stoooopid other people.

I can't seem to teach mine that giving Felix a small piece of chicken is actually a small single piece of chicken, not a small handful of chicken, then again he's not the one who takes him to the vet for boosters and ear checks and gets the lectures on his weight.

I got two lovely cozy throws in Homestore at lunchtime. The same as one I got last year... and promptly kept for myself instead of letting the dogs rob it lol!! These ones will be kept for the humans too :p

Lovely! How much are they right now? I bought one in Penneys for €6 at the weekend and was just reminding myself to get another.

Do Homestore still have dog beds too? :-)

Mr Pumpkinseeds finished night shift this morning and Toby has been keeping me company on the bed most nights. He's gotten into the habit of snuggling up with my feet.:) Mr P has a weeks holiday now so Felix will be delighted but will be insufferably huffy when the holiday is over.

I'm hoping my local rescue will be able to help me with a cat I've seen in the apartment complex where Poppy found us last year. I saw a cat about a week ago coming up from a cafe and limping a bit, I didn't think much of it other than he/she was belonged to someone and just outdoors for a bit, it was dark so I didn't get a great look at him. Anyways, this evening I was passing the shopping centre and he dashed across the road from Dunnes and into the apartment complex almost getting hit along the way. I had to stop walking as he froze looked at me and at an oncoming car trying to decide which was the biggest threat.

Poor cat is filthy and still carrying one of his back legs.:( This cat is the image of a kitten that I know belonged to a specific flat near where Poppy was living rough and he's probably the same cat. I think that he must be desperate to be taking such a big risk going across a busy road at peak shopping time to scavenge food. I've been in touch with the rescue and hopefully they'll be able to trap him.

was sitting playing in the window with new kitten, looked out when kitten froze and FIVE cats trooped down our driveway!!! 3 adults, 1 teenager and 1 kitten  Went out in the car this a.m and a tiny black kitten dashed across the road  All feral! Poor little cats :( There are so many about at the moment its just horrifying

    <snip>

My idiot neighbours who let their dog run loose in the village (tried to bite me a few times) just got a new kitten. It can't be more than 6 months old so it shouldn't be out alone anyway, it's been at our house all day annoying the cats and dogs. I fed our cats and the poor little thing was starving so I gave it a bit to eat, it hasn't gone home all day nor have its owners came looking for it. There's no point in me bringing it back to their house as it'll only follow me back home. I don't want it thinking it can eat here as bad as that sounds, I just can't afford another mouth to feed!

Dropped Lucy into the vets to be spayed. Her little face looking out the window at me wondering what was going on!! :o ... Although she was doing her best to get to the toy on top of the crate in their halloween display moments before so hopefully she'll settle lol!! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,009 ✭✭✭SingItOut

    Good luck Lucy!

New cat was still outide our house at 2am screeching! It must have finally went home as its not here this morning. Poor vogue was tormented by it all day yesterday, even when she was Inside she could hear it!

Odd going into the back of the vets to find my dog fast asleep in the crate - instead of practically jumping into my arms to be taken home! She had the vet bed pushed to one side like she does here lol :P

Fire is lighting, all the cats and dogs are snoozing, and my daughter has gone out to a party as Ms. Death (dog was a bit unsure of her skull makeup).
I have peace and quiet, remote to myself for the evening. :)

Until I have to find my way back to the very remote, half way up the mountain, party house I dropped daughter at.

Oh I remember those days, being all cosy for the night, and then having to go out to collect kids from various places. Funny that I don't miss that :p

Having an argument here about the law, is it true if a dog bites somebody on your private property, for example your house, you can't legally be forced to put it down? Is that true?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,772 Mod ✭✭✭✭DBB

    Not necessarily true.
If a dog bites you, regardless of location, and you decide to pursue it, it *could* end up being put to sleep by a court ruling.
But, there are potentially a lot of steps before that stage, depending on how willing the owners are to fight their dog's case.
None of those potential steps are affected by where it happens, although a dimmer view would be taken if the dog was in a public place and not under effectual control when the bite happened.
However, if a trespasser on your property is bitten, and you as the owner can show that all reasonable steps had been taken to avoid a person legally on your property getting bitten, then it's a civil case of trespasser vs you, and they have to prove negligence.

Edited to add: herecs a link to the relevant legislation:

Poor Dude is full of antibiotic, metacam, slathered in sudacrem and on cage rest. It's awful when he has a bladder infection as his incontinence gets worse and he ends up with scald, though this is his first antibiotic since June, so at least we have a bit of progress compared to him having to get them every 2 weeks at the start of the year :)

Ah he'll be right as rain in no time he's currently tucked up on my lap having a suck on his blankie :)

I just realised it was this time last year that I started the secret santa thread, is anyone else taking it on this year or would the interest be there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,052 ✭✭✭✭tk123

    Oh poor Dude!! :(

Lucy is doing fine - I haven't seen her eat so fast since she was a pup - scoffed down her meals today so must have been starving! She was crying when I took Bailey out for a walk this morning - but I don't know if she was missing him or just wanted her brekkie lol! She's snoozing all day which she'd be doing anways lol so not much of an adjustment for her. :p. She has a patch covering the wound so we haven't seen it yet but her shaved tummy is perfect - compared to poor Bailey's when he was shaved so no hassle of having to rub cream etc in.

Bailey had me up at 1:30 to wee, during the night when fireworks were going off and an hour ago was crying in his bed as if he had a sore tummy with pending bad poo... An hour of him lying outside he decides he's ok to come back inside and is now asleep on the end of the bed with Lucy....leaving me wide awake again!! >_< on the plus side Lucy finally had her post op poo so we can close all the windows lol!! :p

It's Mr Pumpkinseeds birthday today and my gift was in a large paper gift bag, which Felix is now determined to fit himself into(not a chance of him fitting):D Felix is acting like a kitten galloping around the house like a pony and generally being over excited and skittish.:)

    Happy birthday Mr pumpkinseeds!

Felix is just feeling the birthday joy!

It's funny how they try and fit in ridiculously small spaces, kitten here is still trying to squish herself under the sofa but is clearly too big to fit, Jake took a liking to a shoe box, but he's hanging over the sides :D

So, we have (after three leavings of the house) conditioned Opie to realise that he gets a bone of frozen peanut butter every time we go away. And that's three times he's had no accidents, no destructive behaviour and no crying while we were gone!
Super excited at how smart this puppy is!

I got my foster Kitty's today :D they are adorable. They were taken off a feral mother so aren't that fond of humans yet. There were four but when they were being caught they also caught an older half sibling which I agreed to take too. So I have five now. Managed to get the four youngest to play. Two are already noticeably braver. The runt is the bravest of the lot haha. They are also all using the litter trays thank God!

Max is booked in to get neutered on Friday. Bit worried about getting him to the vet, he's come a long way and will be on my knee 24/7 if I let him, but picking him up, while he's getting better, is a bit of a no-go and if we've people over he wont come out till they're gone.
Because he's a fully inside cat and Cinnamon is spayed, we were trying to leave him until he was a bit tamer to take him in because I didn't want him to get too stressed going into a carrier/car/vets etc, but in the last few days he's climbed on top of Roisin (dog) and tried to mate her, as well as a blanket and then last night he and Cinnamon got in a fight because he tried it on with her as well so I rang first thing this morning to book him in. Hopefully my little monkey won't be too stressed about the whole thing.

He'll be fine:) Toby was the very same about being picked up, but since Felix was determined to not let him in the house I just had to keep biting the bullet and pick him up to carry him into the house past Felix, usually I'd ask him not to bite me:D, which he didnt', he'd just make snappy bitey motions to let me know that he could bite me, if he wanted to.

Poppy on the other hand:eek:, mother of God it's a nightmare getting her to the vet, she hates being picked up, no idea why so we don't pick her up and yet she'd sit on our laps all day if she could.
