Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi ladies, thanks for your messages. Had a rough old time of it last week but feeling much better internally this week thank goodness. Haven't posted in a bit as would you believe I have now developed carpal tunnel in both hands so it's hard to use the phone. Havr splints from the physio on both hands atm - I swear you couldn't make this stuff up!!!

I.just don't know why my poor body seems to be falling apart post pregnancy but trying to just get on with it. Although Baby A looks set to be am only child, dunno of I could deal with this crap twice lol.

On the plus side A is thriving. Had a rough few days where all she did was scream but finally realised it was cos I'd changed how I bf her - once I changed back she was content again, thank.goodness.

Oh you poor thing - you are having a right old time of it!! Great to hear your little one is thriving though. How have the dogs taken to her?

Well I'm sitting here with the baby on my lap, two dogs on the couch beside me and one on the floor :) One of them was scared of her for the first week but now it's great. They sometimes wander over to give her a sniff or a lick when she's on my lap but that's the extent of their interest, which is perfect.

we have a miniature schnauzer here, when baby Michael arrived and started crying, the dog would cry too, now she just sits in the corner quietly, i put a stair gate on the kitchen door so we can leave the dog out there if we need to, id always be worried about dogs and babies they might get jealous

Hi Ladies, it's been a while but I've fat fingers and find it hard to type with baby in hand! Glad to hear everyone's little ones are thriving! It sounds tough for the ladies who had sections but hopefully your bodies will bounce back in the next couple weeks.

AJ is flying. I am producing a bit more milk now than I thought and I am trying to slowly cut back on the amount in his bottles. He put on 900g one week and 440g for the last two - he is nearly 12 lbs now! Though he is very long - he can't fully stretch out is legs in his 0-3 sleep suits so I think I will have to wash the 3-6 for the coming weeks.

He's started to fight naps since he hit the 5 week mark - afraid he will miss something! The only sure way of sleep is walking in the buggy, car journeys, or granddads arms!

Oh I haven't actually looked into any slings yet ! I'm a terrible procrastinator.

I was looking at 2nd hand pumps alright. I have a manual one which is fine for the odd express, manage to get about 4 oz out of 2 breasts. But it's a pain in the hole! There are a lot of medela mini electric pumps for sale which makes me wonder if they are as useless as a manual - mostly only used a couple times. A few medela swing ones also but not sure I want to splash out for them. Although I suppose the cost of formula might outweigh the price.

I got the medela pump in style advanced with the backpack, $83 with my insurance but need to buy steriliser and freezer bags yet. I looked at the other smaller more portable ones but I was concerned that the motor wouldn't be very good in the smaller ones. I'm going to be pumping a lot as I go back to work before he's 4 months and hope to keep to breast milk till he's a year (plus solids). So I reckoned a good pump will still be cheaper than formula for me. Haven't started pumping yet as he's been on a bit of a binge this weekend, totally drained me I doubt there's anything left to pump!

Glad to hear A is thriving! You are having a rough time fbm, hope the carpal tunnel is the last of your body issues. Are your fingers sore too by any chance? My hands were sore for the first few weeks and they still aren't right. The joints in my fingers felt weak and sore, like it was hard when I tried to open his baby gro fasteners or push on the hand soap pump. They still aren't normal.

i have sore fingers. Not so much sore as weak-ish too. Is this a post preg symptom? Alsofeel my knee joints at me a bit and my feet feel tender tho not swollen. common de-nominator = joint issues. i had stopped taking my daily cod liver oil when pregnant and havent re-introduced them yet - just forget - maybe that will help but was interested to see others mention sore fingers..

Sometimes i think that as we have had so much symptoms and wierd body changes that i don't even tune into the half of them anymore....

Funnily enough I couldn't stomach fish oil capsules when pregnant but have started taking them again since he was born. perhaps my fingers would be worse without them. I also feel the back of my pelvis sometimes is achey/stiff.

I second that on the multiple weird body changes! In my innocence I didn't expect so many post-partum.

Oh dear god! R got his first 3 vaccine shots today. I wanted to cry myself! So awful, huge needles, the poor little thing :( he roared worse than he's ever done. I fed him straight away and h e calmed down. Later on at home, after a good feed we both fell asleep. When I woke up his dad was walking around holding him still asleep. He'd been crying in his sleep :(:'( he's slept most of the evening now and seems a lot better. So awful to see a baby crying in his sleep though.

Aww, I'm sorry to hear your little man was so upset madeinamerica. It's one thing I am dreading is the vaccinations, he didn't even get his BCG in hospital and we have to wait until Dec as apparently they are low in stock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 787 ✭✭✭madeinamerica

Thanks comon, it's hard to watch! Hope yours goes better. I need to toughen myself up for the next ones.

Great to see in your previous post that AJ is doing well and getting bigger! Hope you are doing well yourself :) sounds like the feeding is going well if you have more milk now.

On a positive note, the doc was very happy with his progress. He's 13lb exactly and 22.7 inches, so he's put on 4lb 15oz and grown 3 inches since birth. Breast feeding is working! Phew! Looking back, he almost looks skinny in his first photos but now he's filling out and getting chubby :)

They get worse when they become more aware
Like a lamb to the slaughter poor little things don't know what's happening.

I can't wait to get him weighed too. It's such a delight when you see how much they have gained. His toes are at the end of the 0-3 months so il have to move up to 3 -6...

R grew out of o few suits recently, it was a bit sad that he's not our tiny baby anymore but so lovely that he's growing too.

A quick question ladies. I am bf A and every time she needs to poo or pass gas she just cries and cries. I thought it must be normal but now I'm thinking it's not??? Her poos are yellow but loose. Internet has me convinced she is intolerant to the dairy in my diet - Google is a blessing and a curse! Do any of your babies cry when pooping? She doesn't cry the rest of the time.

Poos Seem fine as you described however you could cut out dairy and see.
My first was like that I had to cut out dairy she won't take any dairy products to this day and she is 4

Would you try some gripe water?

We have had some terrible nights here in past week and gripe water has relived discomfort greatly.

My guy does get agitated when moving stuff through and is often a lot happier after a poo or fart. He doesn't cry for it though. He's exclusively bf. Your daughter's poos sound normal for bf baby BTW.

Would you look into baby massage for her tummy? We were at our first mummy and baby yoga yesterday and the instructor showed us a basic tummy massage to help their intestines, called an I Love You massage. I think you can get books on baby massage or something, I haven't looked into it further.

On the tummy massage, there's a description on another thread: in new born and toddlers, a thread called 'baby bottle query' first page, a post by our own monflat!. I'm on my phone so can't copyt and paste it sorry.

Monflat that's interesting about your daughter. If there's no improvement I'll have to look at cutting out dairy. Only thing is that will send me from vegetarian to vegan which I didn't think would be the best lifestyle while bf, although I had planned to make the leap at a later date!

Madeinamerica what a coincidence, I'm starting a baby massage class on Thursday so maybe that will help. I'll look up that thread too :-)

I see from other threads that it is now sold in.the republic for 10 euro.
It is only about 2.50 a bottle up north.

It's only available here again recently
It had been taken off market for a while because of the ingredients in it.
Years ago it had alcohol in it not anymore.

However there are many shops around that sell it under the counter.
If you search boards there have been a few threads before.

Are you anywhere near hugginstown Co kilkenny there's a shop there that stocks it.

I got someone that was up north to get me some.

    It is very effective though.

im in cork, i have a bottle coming from uk saturday
if that works then i will get it from amazon or asda uk via parcel motel

is it much different to infacol, he is on that since tuesday
only a slight improvement but the nurse said it takes seven days to work

  • Registered Users Posts: 774 ✭✭✭FurBabyMomma

My mother in law got us the bottle from the UK too. We're going to ask her to get another when she's in Birmingham soon.

Yep it has different constitutes than infacol.

If you find infacol is not working you could try dentinox colic drops
Some swear by infacol some think it's useless.
However I must say I find dentinox drops effective this time.

Hi ladies. Hope you and babies are well. How are you getting on with sleep routine? We are struggling with it ie. It's non existent! Bubs is a month old now. What time do you put baby down? Do you go to bed early with baby or keep him up with you till your bedtime? Do you Co sleep? Do you and partner share bedroom or separate rooms? We have tried different things but still get perhaps one 3hrs sleep -either 8 ish to 11 ish and then every 90 mins average. Otherwise if be doesn't settle early he might sleep 12-3 and then again feeds every 90 mins approx. We are giving formula about 11/12 am but depends on how he is sleeping and when his nite appears to be starting!!

He was sleeping with me in the bed from birth to 8 weeks but I found I was disturbing him so much to my heartbreak I moved him into his room from then
    ( I had second in bed until 8 months :-( )

Husband has only moved back when baby moved out!

Anyway now routine is good he feedsaround 7-830 am back for morning sleep immediately within 10 mins.
Feed three hourly during day at around 5 pm he gets fussy and HAs to sleep between 5-6

If he does not sleep at this time he's overtired and awake for hours.
Feed then. Massage and up to bed at 6.45 offer more feed but usually.
    Asleep from 7-11.

Dream feed at 11. I feed him as much as u can without waking him
As if he wakes we are in for an unsettled night!!!
Nappy change then asleep until 5am another feed in his sleep and into another day.
Now that said we do have the odd bad night

At 4 weeks I fed no more than 3 hourly day and night.
It is hard on you 73trix but it will get easier. I no that's no consolation to you but I found my first extremely hard.
I can manage 3 easier now than I managed my first.
I was all over the place.

The key thing I found is do the exact same each time.. Routine routine.
On my first I had zero routine till 14 weeks but if you stick to 3 hourly during the day and the same bed time routine it eventually will all settle.

our fella is in the moses basket at the end of our bed
he goes to bed when we do about midnight
breast feed and then just lie him in the basket and he falls asleep till 6 ish
half an hour feed and back down till 10
he is very good now, at the start it was all messed up

monflat did you move baby to his own room at eight weeks, everyone is telling me 6 months ?
just wondered as i have a cotbed in the nursery ready for him and he is outgrowing the basket, so i was debating buying a small cot for now for our room

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,490 ✭✭✭monflat

Yes I did my first was 6 months second 8 months.

If he does not go into his own room he will be disturbed by 2 yr old who is still up each night and a 4 yr old who is up too and numerous times I had him settled and in they came

His room is off ours years ago it was our wardrobe but it's a ok sized room husband put a door in through wall so no need to go out door and in other door so it's good I can still hear every whimper.

I do know what is reccomended but it's what suits your family too.
If I didn't I'd be ragged with exhaustion as he is a light sleeper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,753 ✭✭✭comongethappy

AJ goes down at night between 10 and 11. The routine starts around 8:30 to 9:30. Bf then large bottle of 120 ml, Followed by night night to dad and pets. Upstairs for star light show and bedtime story. Then lullabies and trying to settle him in crib. If he settles in less than an hour I could get 5 hrs, otherwise of 3 to 4. Up around 2:30 or 3 for feed which can last up to 2 hrs with winding. then sleep for another 2.5 to 3 hrs.

However gas issues might mean we can not sleep the whole time as he can grunt very loudly. Day naps aren't great, short naps of 30 to 50 mins maybe 2 or 3 times.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭73trix

For those who start nite time early,;do you go to bed at same time or use a monitor? I feel I'd be tired enough to go to bed early but then there's no decent wind down time with my OH :-(

For those who dont put baby down til late, do you have baby in basket in living room with you til then sleeping or is he awake?

I'm only getting to have conversations with husband now it has been very difficult he is gone 3 nights a week..to GAA
Last Saturday we went out for my birthday hour and a half we had we went local and Could run fly home if needed.

It's tough goin and I find we really have to make an effort to talk to one another.
But when they get older it's even harder!

Yes I have just put him down now and monitor is on

Older two to bed at 8pm
Tidy up have dinner until 930 and then up to bed. In the early weeks I used to go to bed at 7
He would put others to bed tidy up etc.

Now I have more energy I do all that.

I've been getting more fresh air too these days so I' have more energy.

It's such a life changing experience being a parent isn't. It

Gosh I'm really falling down on the whole routine thing, I'm a disaster! He is 8 weeks old today. Every time I think i've turned a corner and he's stretching his night feeds we regress back to 2 hrs. Eg this weekend he slept from 11.30 to 5 and 12 to 5 but then last night it was back to 12, 2, 4. I dunno really. He is quite windy and gets very agitated until he farts or poos. I tried avoiding dairy in case it was intolerance but it didn't make much difference. He brings up most of his feeds - just spitty most of the time but then every now and again there's a projectile vomit. It's lovely!

Anyone know how to deal with cradle cap?

Oh it's tough when you think you get there and they change bavk again.

    Cradle cap yes
A few tiny drops of olive oil or sunflower oil onto the scalp
    Massage in
Then get your baby hair brush and gently rub back and forth.

Worked a treat for me today!

Ok so not any better as regards sleep routine. The temporary sleeping from 8pm- 11pm has gone aswell. Monkey didn't sleep from 3 pm yest til1am. Despite a walk in buggy and a bath. I thought baths were to help with sleep! I was driven demented!

I have unfortunately succumbed to co sleeping with babs in bed with me. He will NOT settle in basket. I tried for over 2 hours last nite. Even after a bottle of formula. Not a hope. So wrecked I let him sleep with me but I'm worried I won't be able to break this habit and my OH will never be able to come back know to bed with me :-(

  • Registered Users Posts: 774 ✭✭✭FurBabyMomma

Hi 73trix, my babs is 5 weeks and while we don't have a routine during the day as I just let her sleep whenever I can, we have a pretty solid one for night.

She goes to bed with us around 11 with us, had a bf, nappy then into bed. We have a co-sleeper which I find great as it's up against my side of the bed so when she grumbles going down I just lie down and look into her eyes and let her hold my finger while she drifts off. We also have a Tranquil Turtle and she loved looking at the projection on the ceiling and listening to the wave sounds, calms her right down. She wakes again around 4 and 6 or 7 for bf and nappy, then it's turtle and finger holding time again. Normally settled within 20mins despite the fact she gets very gassy and usually cries for a few mins while that is going on.

They just love the warmth and closeness of being beside mammy!
    He's very young yet.
There will come a time that he will settle.
It's tough when they don't sleep.
Would you try getting a sling for baby that they could sleep in during the day and at least you may get some rest. Or. Have you a swing.
My first needed constant movement to settle her

    Edit ;
My first was in swing day and night up to about 16 weeks nothing would settle her.
If a swing works use it or whatever.

Don't mind what other people do etc there are so many people out there that their babies don't sleep in cots etc need to be held or rocked. Bottle and Breastfed.
My friend is formula feeding and her little one is 19 weeks all last week she wanted to lie on her mammys chest to settle never done this before.

73trix. You are doin great. Motherhood is very tough it's so hard not to enjoy early days. .

My first baby was a touchy sensitive baby difficult to settle in first 2.5 yrs but last night I put her to bed and she said night mammy I'm tired you can go now I never thought I'd hear the likes she goes off now no problem.

Trust your instincts with your baby also and hopefully you will get more rest soon
    X

For those who start nite time early,;do you go to bed at same time or use a monitor? I feel I'd be tired enough to go to bed early but then there's no decent wind down time with my OH :-(

For those who dont put baby down til late, do you have baby in basket in living room with you til then sleeping or is he awake?
we have a graco swing downstairs if he falls asleep, he goes in there, but 9 till bed time he is normally awake

No routine here, at least not intentionally. I keep saying I should start a routine m bed time routine for him but doesn't happen. He speends the evening with us in front of the telly. I put him in a mini crib beside us if he sleeps. He does sleep a bit in the late evening. I feed him in the couch close to bed time, change him and put him down around 11 when I go to bed. He's usually awake again after being changed so I give him a feed in bed then he falls asleep. I've a co sleeper crib by my bed, it saves my sanity. It's a diy job, an IKEA crib with one side taken off, works a charm.

    Hi ladies,

Sounds like your all doing great. My little girl is 5 weeks now, going for the dreaded BCG next week :( She is just growing before our eyes, she gets last bottle around half ten/eleven normally settled by half eleven. She will sleep until around half 3/four she sleeps in her own crib in our room. Normally takes half an hour to feed/wind/change her. Sleeps then until half 7ish.

2yo is great with her no jealousy thank god. Wont call her by her name, uses a pet name which i think will stick as i find we are using it now!!

He was always great for going to bed, straight into cot no tricks or anything. But since the last few weeks of my pregnancy he likes to get into our bed first to watch a cartoon, takes AGES for him to go asleep as he fights it. When he does go asleep we move him into his cot.

Do i just need to be striker with him and put him in the cot and let him cry it out?

Back driving now after section, great to have independence again! How is everyone healing? I've had no trouble thank god back gets a bit achy after carrying 2yo. I know i shouldn't but its easier said than done.

Just wondering when you go in to register them/get birth certificate do you have to make an appointment or just go in?

R was pretty clingy and cranky this evening, didn't want to be put down at all. Was delighted with myself when I realised I could put him in the sling to get some housework done. Tried out breastfeeding him in the sling too. Seriously felt like a super-mummy, breastfeeding and folding laundry at the same time. Ah, the little things make me happy!

Excited ftm. You just go in and register birth no appointment necessary. It's not 20 euro for a birth cert.

It depends on yourself what way you want to deal with your little toddler.

It might be fine now and suits you to lift him into cot but down the road you may want to go out at night time etc and this be difficult.

However he is put out too by his sisters arrival so it may be a wrong time to do it.

    It's hard to know!

I was so excited when my poor brain realised i could wear the sling in the house! Seriously need sleep.

    I've a Beco Gemini.

I bought it because it sounded good in this review:

So far it has been good. Comfy enough, hasn't been sore on my back or anywhere, R has either gone to sleep or just been quietly sitting there. I can put it on by myself. Took a few gos to figure out how to get it off by myself as it has these safety clasps but it is easy now. My hubby didn't notice I was feeding him until I told him, so it is discrete.

A had her 6 week check up today. Doctor said her head is normal sized which is great as she had a bullet shaped head due to being breech. Everything else normal too except for weight. She was 6lbs15 at birth and is 8lbs10 today - doctor said he would have expected her to have put on more. I was so disappointed as I thought she was doing great! She is exclusively bf and in the last few days she has upped her feeding time so I'm sure she'll catch up.

Hope all you ladies and babies are doing well x

What did they advise you to do regarding the weight ?
Our fella was 7 lb 1 at birth and at the six week check was 11 lb 7
But it all depends on the parents surely
My husband is 6" 4 so we are expecting a big boy, he is over 2 foot already

    Can you answer me this?
Was the doc male or female?
If female did she mention that she bf herself

If I were you a quick call to cuidu or La leche will putyour mind at ease.
    That weight gain Is good
Was the same scales used for the initial weight and today's weight?
Even that could mean an oz or two.

What was she at 2 weeks check?
Some gp s have no knowledge of bf and are obsessed with weight gain.

I had a terrible gp experience on my first giving me really bad advice

If baby has wet and dirty nappies everything going ok

My lad was 8 7 oz when born at two weeks was 8 lbs and at 10 weeks is 11 lbs so you are doin great
they seem to pressurise mothers about weight gain.

If he is alert and regular wet and dirty nappies don't worry you are flying it.
