Can't see Bobby O'Neill extending South 51 into the wool shop in the medium-term (2-5 years). Might be wrong though.
Just noticed this morning on my way down to catch the bus that the O'Neill's shop beside Burger Mac is closed, completely emptied out and the name taken off the front!

It was fine yesterday afternoon. Anyone know what's going on?

Don't know about the others. Haven't been up that way today yet.

Woah! You serious?! Very Surprised about that. One thing lacking from that shop was lotto sales. Both his other shops have lotto and I imagine that increases football significantly.

Just to update, O'Neills has moved up the street slightly and crossed over to the other side, beside the new Selskar pharmacy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭00011000

Ah... That's a much better location. Really nice shop he got there! Can't imagine Selskar pharmacy lasting. There's never anyone in there!

This town has too many clothes shops and pharmacies.

boyles sports by nancy codds has gone ...just the corner unit where nancys used to be.... the boyles in the beside next door to it is still there.... although has this been like this a while ???? only noticed it now...

click still not open and that unit besideersk still a mystery....

did bobby o neill take over the big shop which had brown papered over windows a while ago??? directly accross from where soul 2 sole used to be???

The Boyle Sports situation has been like that for a while. Andy Doyle (bugler's, Carryout) leased the building to Boyle's and opens his own Bookie a few doors up! SOUND! :)

What's "ersk"? Is that the name of a clothes shop? sounds familiar.

Edit: Oh yeah, Ersk... new place where Blue Mountain used to be. Anyone noticed how the clothes are laid out like in a sports shop? Same owners as Sports Savers...

disappointing that schuh isnt coming to wexford then... was getting all sweaty and excited about that one... they have some really nice stuff!

if dunnes main street was sorted...lowneys mall sorted, corrys sorted we'd have three big places in wexford to add to our town!

come on business ....get stuck in ! :D

The owners of those places have no interest in developing the sites and Dunnes window space will be taken over by Wexford Tourism during the summer advertising various things.

  • Registered Users Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

yeah i seen that mcloughlin ... thats TERRIBLE really... the council should kick their arses because of that.... its ok to use in the meantime to display tourist info etc etc but overall that should be a side issue and only happen while they are renovating or getting the place ready for the next tennant.

sadly i think the dunnes site is going to be lying there for 20+years alongisde the other sites ive mentioned. CRIMINAL !

I was going to say the same thing about corries. They'd have no interest in selling up!

But dunnes is definitely looking at lettin out their premises. They used to have a policy that they won't let competitors take over their properties. I don't know if this policy has changed. Dunnes even have a "to let" sign up!

Lowneys have actively been looking for a suitor for their main street property since tesco moved out. Their package includes the 147 and mackens travel agency, all the way back to the quay. (I think it includes tesco anyway!)

I'd love to see debenhams in their or something... Lowneys is so dire in it's current state!

  • Registered Users Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

tesco werent meant to be allowed out of that site unless they had someone else to go into it... they had an anchor store already sorted out for it and maybe still do but there was objections to the right of way in the laneway at the side as it runs past bugler doyles etc....

so things were on hold and it was going to court last is heard about a year ago or more now... havnt had any updates since....

debenhams would be terrible! i have been there with my missus and they are just like shaws but worse! still would be better than nothing at all ! :)

Friends of mine are opening a shop this coming Saturday, selling dress fabrics and knitting yarns etc., which is good news for those people who used to have to have to travel to Waterford or Kilkenny, or brave the insanity that is Corry's.
The shop's name is 'Stitched Up' and it's on Barrack St., right beside the little post office there.

I've been looking for a retail unit on the main street for a while to open a small speciality shop but the rents are crazy. Looks like only large multi-nationals can afford to set up shop in Wexford!! Not much chance for locals who want to make a go of it :(
There's a few available on Henrietta St. at reasonable rates. Or there were a few weeks back anyway.

I hear someone is thinking of doing alcohol deliveries in Wexford Town. How does everyone feel this service might go down in Wexford?

Edit: Don't know the specifics, but in general, I think the service could go down well enough in Wexford.

I can't wait to see what your speciality shop is Eliza1! Wexford needs more of them! Can you say if it's sex-specific, or unisex appropriate? ;)

Thanks, great article. Articulates very well why I really enjoy living in this town, and the business opportunity that it represents.

I still feel that Wexford was quite neglected during the boom years, while the border towns such as Dundalk got a serious amount of investment. Hopefully things might progress a little with the new Gov.

well the piri piri chicken place in the bullring is now closed... pity...was a great addition, new, nothing else like it in town and tasty!

council wouldnt give them a late licence because they didnt want people congregating in that area of town late at night. what a load of toss !

the place had to close by 11 or 11.30 every night and we all know most people come flooding out of pubs and clubs at least an hour and a half later than that.

no chance! well done to the muppets in power that be !

I can't believe it's gone either. The food was amazing. I only tried it for the first time the week before it closed. So sad about that! I didn't know you need to get a special late license for food...

King kebab is also closed... Wonder what the reason was there?

piri piri chicken taken over by "moo mooz" some sort of sweet shop with a twist... is this eliza's shop??? :) bitter sweet symphony!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭Lola92

I think the moo moos shop is actually a milkshake bar, had a gawk in walking over to argos the other day :p I'm really annoyed the chicken place has closed though, every time I walked past I thought I would love to try that - never happened

ok mcloughlin thats ok...strange i never noticed it before but they have now got stickers plastered all over the front shop windows of cullens advertising it so maybe they are still just upstairs and cullens is just gone plain and simple and that space is now empty.

You know thar side door in the corner it leads up a narrow stairs to the shop its one of those places in wexford that no one appears to have ever been in but strangly does well they got a good bit of publicity from RTE some years back when there stock was used in one of those home improvement shows.

How does everyone feel about an authentic japanese sushi bar opening up in Wexford town?

Is it a bit too esoteric for the Wexford populace or is Wexford ready for something new?

I personally think there is a strong interest in Asian cuisine evinced by all the Chinese take-aways and restaurants and Thai also. The problem is that if there was a party of 6 for example, there's always going to be one or two that wont touch raw fish.

Oooh look at you with your fancy words.

Dictionary toilet roll word of the day :)

On Point: I would be one of the party who wont touch raw fish. Tried it not once, but twice and nearly heaved both times.

Personally i'd love it, i used to live abroad and ate Sushi almost weekly but have never eaten it in Ireland. Although i'd be sceptical if there would be a market for it here, in the good times it might have had a chance with the trend factor pushing it on as much as the economy. Aswell i tend to stay away unless its genuinely Japanese run.

everyone ive said it to about the sushi bar have said they would love one in town and personally speaking , id love one as well myself.

new coffee shop "blasta coffee" opening in the old keville hairdessers place on the corner beside chocolate and yummy chinese on the bullring side. seen signs up and work going on in there today .... ELIZA??? :)

also looks like a new restaurant opening in the old commodore barry shop in the crescent quay... not sure what style yet ....

marlows have relocated and are opened in anne street ....

I'd love a sushi bar also - but the rest of my family hate it (1:4 is not a good population base).

Haven't been down town in ages... must go down tomorrow to see whats changed.

marine restaurant over the commodare barry now open or nearly open... walked by there sunday and side door was open, so they're either finishing last few bits upstairs or they are open already !

cafe blasta must be nearly ready to open as well.. seen them working and putting final touches to it last saturday so a couple of more places for food.

also heard recently that wexford has now overtaken kinsale etc as irelands place to be for the best food...some critic made daring claims... michelin standard restaurants for half the price...long may it continue !

The Anne Street place is going to be a Polish restaurant. Passed by yesterday.

Kelly's Bakery place closed on Main street.

I'd put it another two votes for a sushi place. Lovely when done well, although i've had some mediocre stuff in Dublin.

  • Registered Users Posts: 293 ✭✭WexfordWarrior

oh no! loved kellys...used to go there every week for my salad rolls! nicest rolls in the town... didnt know they were going... first time in about 100 years now there is no kellys bakery on the main street! shame...

  • Registered Users Posts: 79 ✭✭Maverick88

I'm truly shocked to hear about Kelly's bakery. When did it close? Has it gone totally or moved elsewhere?

One of the things my daughter loves about going to Wexford is Kelly's bread. Normally have to bring back a couple of loaves when I'm over

The shop is closed, the bakery isn't.

Centra has a notice up saying that they will carry more of the Kellys product line, so i assume they've just decided that the maintaining the town shop isn't worth it.

bloody shame about kellys bakery... my great grandad used to work there when it was on the premises where new look is now... pity and a real shame....
