I have the phone number for the secretary at my consultants office her name is Dr.Mehta. Her Secratary is there after 9.30 am. If you want the number, PM me... Might get you some info.

Say this because I had to reshedule my scan and they let me pick the day that suited me so they must not be too busy,

The rotunda do a second trimester scan and bloodwork feom 14 to 21 weeks to test for DS. then if there's a high risk you can opt for the amnio.

I'm in Rotunda on Fri for 12 wk scan so might ask them re this. If I can get it done public rather than pay through the nose privately I might even be able to get my car tax paid some time this century :D
I was sure to get that specific scan it has to be 11.2-13.6 weeks for some reason. Sure I'll ask anyway and see what they say.

kildareash I got them yesterday by ringing the main hospital number and being put through, the outpatient number kept ringing out, wonder if she is on hols! They said i was booked in for the 27th. Since i decided to go private to the coombe, got fed up of them and the mammy kept telling me her labour stories and her probs towards the end of her pregnancy so she frightened me into going private really :-)

Thats the nuchal fold scan! I was too late for that thats why they suggested the second trimester scan. im doing it in newry because its closer than thw rotunda and its costing 105pounds as opposed to 250euro.

I havent eaten a banana in months!!!

Theg81der I'm glad i'm not the only one, i felt late ringing the clinics at 13 weeks but great to be able to get a quick appointment for next week.:-) Did you definitely decide to go private after?

Thanks ladies, I have been ringing the switch.

Might try googling around and see if I can get a direct line for Dr Hosam.

Was chatting to a friend at the weekend who is also pregnant and attending Portlaoise. She thought they weren't scanning before 18 weeks, but she was high risk so obviously has been a lot sooner than that.

@notsobusy - hope the potassium levels is not serious. Good that they picked it up

Yea I just don`t feel I`ll get what I need out of public care and everyone in my family is nagging me for weeks. Was going to try go public but clearly I`m not going to get the follow up I need.

It's just awful that you feel you can't get the care you need. I wouldn't mind going to newry and having the baby there but i just can't afford it.

I was quite sceptical of the public system after my experience with the lourdes last week but i was reassured today when they called me today to ask me to.come in for more bloods and another appointment with the obs.

I am frustrated that they dont offer diagnostic tests.

I'm so jealous of all of you who have had scans so far! Mine is scheduled for next Tuesday! I'll be 14 weeks! So excited to tell everyone as its getting hard to hide it now!

Am I the only Cork mammy here??

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭March11

Silly, I am living in Co. Waterford, but equidistant from Cork/Waterford, so am going to CUMH. Am 12 weeks and 1 day, have my scan today week - can't wait!

Cyning, have so much pity for you being in hospital again. That is tough going, but at least baba is ok.

Think my energy is coming back and the nausea is lifting, but insomnia is back with a vengence, plus 3 times a night loo trips. Am living in tights, knee boots and dresses with cardies to keep things covered - trying to get away with not telling work til end of the month, but have a nice little bump now! A third of the way!!! Thank god!!! :D

Hope every else is doing ok.

Place I'm going to for NT scan is quite handy for me & OH to then get to work on time. I'm in Kildare so nowhere near Newry so I think by time I added on petrol & time lost I'd still be paying around 250 euros!

I just got a letter asking me to give another urine sample with my GP - no other details whatsoever. Does anyone have any clue why this might be?

I assume if it had been urgent, they would have called - but would it kill them to say why? I've called the hospital and they'll call me back with an explanation, but in the meantime, i'm mildly concerned.

I was never this worried and tense when I was not pregnant... and now I can't even have a drink/cigarette to settle my nerves

Insomnia is killer the past few nights. Last night i literally slept an hour before my alarm went off. And i have an exam in twenty minutes. Yawn yawn yawn

I'm really having to get creative with my wardrobe to cover my bump. How many weeks/months will you be when you tell them? On all my work trousers there is a zip, two clasps and a button. Walking around I can manage the zip & one clasp. When I'm sitting down I nearly have my trousers completely open (covered by my top - and I'm in my own office, phew). But I think I'm still too small to go into maternity trousers. But then I don't want to go the next size up as my arse & thighs will be swimming in them & it will look weird.

I'm wondering if I can make it to mid Feb (I'm 11.5 weeks now) before saying anything. We've been going through a stressful time in work the past couple months with redundancies and we are down to the absolute bare bones skeleton crew. I think I'd like to let things settle out more & get smoother before I land this bombshell on my boss, don't want to make him go more grey as he's been a good boss to me!

I reckon most people wouldn't ask anything til the bump looked about 4 months on as prior to that, it's really debatable whether a woman just looks a bit paunchy :D What do ye think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,722 ✭✭✭silly

I am trying to cover up with baggy tops but was looking in the mirror today and I think I may be paranoid about the bump. It is there but probably not as big as I thought. Thinking now the baggy tops are making me look more pregnant than I am!
I'm 13 weeks today and feel like crap. Hubby had a stomach bug yesterday and I think that's what I have. Struggling here at work.
I have my scan on Tuesday and after that I am tellin my boss and everyone that will listen. Sick of lying.
Just had to tell my friends sister that I won't be staying the night at my friends hen, so I know my friend will be wondering why.

It's mad that at a time when we should be keeping calm, our nerves are shot to pieces and our stress levels are through the roof! And we can't even take anything to calm oursevles down.
Hope the hospital can shed some light on the need for another urine sample. It could be something simple like the sample was contaminated in the lab or lost and they need you to give a second one.

I got a couple of pairs of work trousers in the sale in Mothercare that just have elasticated pieces in the waist band. They had 50% off last week when I was in there so I got two pairs for about €30. I got a couple of long t-shirts in Penny's and wear them under everything so you can't see the elasticated bits.
Think I'll keep the trousers for Christmas from now on!

Finally got through to the outpatients in Portlaoise today. They had me down for the wrong consultant which wasn't a big deal, they were quickly able to change it and gave me an appointment on Friday, January 27! woohoo!

I asked OH if he wanted to cancel tomorrow's appt, coz we can't really afford the €100 straight after Xmas, but he's like a child waiting for Santa so wouldn't hear of it. He rang his parents last night and told them that we would be over to show it to them after the scan and everything! So cute :)

Trying to concetrate on the happy thoughts coz I'm a bit peeved at the hospital. The receptionist said oh yeah, we recevied your letter on December 15, but a month later they still hadn't sent me out an appointment.

Yeah but much lower down now and very infrequent

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭March11

Ah that's ok then, I was starting to get tad panicky. They are down lower alright. Can be a lethal stab of pain when it does happen or sometimes like a stitch on one side.

Thanks for that Javagal! Oooh let us know how you get on with the appointment, mine is next Wed and I am curious to know what it entails!!!! What they do etc.!!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,237 ✭✭✭javagal

    I shall indeed. I'd say it's the blood pressure/weight/scan.

Would prefer they left out the weight.. 9pounds so far!

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭March11

How far along are you Javagal? I am 12 weeks and have gained 3-4lbs so far. Am looking forward to hearing your update on Friday now, something to look forward to and go by for this first timer anyway!:)

I am 15 weeks on Saturday!! My first baby too. Had a few episodes of bleeding at the start but everything is great now..

That bloody doctor best stay away from me with needles or else!! Already had blood taken twice when I was in about the bleeding..(not good with needles)

Nice, 15 weeks, am counting the days off every week - wishing it away so I am! I had 2 spotting episodes and after going back over my dates, both times were when my period would have been due, so I am waiting to see if I get any spotting in 2 weeks time again when I would have been due my AF. I have been getting my blood taken every 2 weeks to check progesterone/iron levels and I find if you pinch yourself while they are putting the needle in it can distract you from the needle, it hurts, but in my little mad world it works for me!!! :p

I've had three blood tests and been poked with needles for canulas for my IVs 8 times since I came into hosp Friday: I just breath out and grab something... I'm a wuss when it comes to needles!! Just got a load of vitamins and glucose in by IV so fingers crossed I'll improve enough to go home soon!!

I need to buy maternity pjs: all my pjs are really digging in around my belly which I can't for life of me figure out cuz I really don't have a bump at all: I'm guessing they must be hitting where babs is?

And I still get cramps all the time doc isn't even in the slightest bit worried about them he just tells me there normal!!!

Just throwing another topic into the discussion, seeing as we are all progressing along - anyone using bio oil in preparation for stretch mark prevention or are ye using something else or anything at all yet? It's on my to do list to get something and start....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,260 ✭✭✭Mink

Cyning I really hope you get to go home soon. You must be going stir crazy!

Javagal I've my booking scan tomorrow (Friday the 13th ) as well. You're getting the private scan done right? I'm excited. We have to take day off work as the apt is right in the middle of the day so it was pointless for either of us to go into work for just 2hrs or go in in afternoon for 2hrs.

Last time I checked (like a week ago) I was up 4-5lbs since beginning of preg but I think I've put on more as my trousers are tighter and tighter. 12 weeks on Sat. I'm actually a bit scared to weigh myself.

March11 re the bio oil, my sister got me some sort of body oil from the Boots Botanical range. She used it and only got one stretchmark. However my skin is very different to hers & let's face it if you're genetically prone to get them then you'll get them. My other sister has tons of them. I've been putting it on after shower as my tummy's so bloated already!

My skin has started improving, I usually have little bumps and dry skin on my arms and legs but this has improved. I'm also hardly losing any hairs when I wash my hair (normally loads comes out). I'm worried I'll look like Sideshow Bob at the end of this! My nails are growing so fast and they're quite strong now too. Not getting massive breakouts on my face anymore. My face is still very blotchy though from the old spots that haven't faded, thank god for foundation and concealer.

Cyning, tomorrow is my first hospital appointment!! I will book a private one in a few weeks..

I got the Mamma Mio tummy stretch mark cream. its expensive but all the woman i know swear by it..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,065 ✭✭✭Kash

If you think the Bio-Oil is going to do any good, start using it now!
I am 14 weeks pregnant tomorrow, and I already have one large one on the right of my belly, and about 10 small ones on the left. Grrr.

I moisturise daily anyway as I usually have pretty dry skin if left to it's own devices, and I had been using the Palmers stretch mark stuff on and around the bump - but fat lot of good it did me! But as Mink said, if you're prone to them, they're going to happen even if you bathe in nothing but Bio Oil :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 128 ✭✭March11

Thanks ladies, think I better buy some kind of cream and start, but I too am in the - If you're going to get them, you're going to get them, nothing you can do will prevent them - kind of mindset. Never heard of the Mama Mio stuff, will have a look in chemists. My tum feels under pressure these days, so reckon there is some kind of expansion going on. I am so tired!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,237 ✭✭✭javagal

This is the link to it March http://www.mamamio.com/eu/pregnancy/must-haves/tummy-rub-stretch-mark-oil.html
It is very expensive, luckily my sister in law got me some for xmas, must say it smells amazing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭kildareash

Had my first scan in the gp's surgery today.
We were both blown away, amazing!
Babes was kicking away, even gave me a little wave :)
I'm still smiling a few hours later. Can't wait for appt in hospital in a couple of weeks to see the little one again.
We Cldnt believe how clear it was, I cld make out fingers and everything. The machine didn't print out but doc was lovely and encouraged oh to take lots of pics on his phone and was getting different angles for him and everything.
Found my old bottle of bio oil so going to start using it now. A friend recommended some lotion that clarins do and zinc tablets too!

Got out of hospital today: thank god... seriously thought i was going to just move in there at some stage yesterday: i've so far spent a quarter of my pregnancy on hospital: thats a lot!!

I'm using bio oil for weeks: I have keloid scars on my stomach and the nurses had reccomended it to me the first time i was in hosp at 6 weeks. I dont always have the energy for it but use it as much as I can! I'm slathering myself in Aveeno aswell cuz my skin everywhere is super dry

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to bring down swelling in my hands? I really want to put my wedding and engagement rings back on but my hands are so bruised and swollen I even have bruises going up my fingers... which I did not know was possible!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭kildareash

Great to hear you're out of hospital, cyning.
Can't offer any advice on the bruised and swollen hands. Is that from the cannulars and being prodded and poked?

Maybe putting them in ice cold water for a minute, a few times a day wld help with the swelling. Dunno if that is just for sprains and the like tho.

Is arnica safe to use when pregnant? Might help with the bruising if it is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭cyning

Ya a couple of veins collapsed aswell so I think thats why they're so much worse this time... that and I'm been prodded with needles multiple times every few weeks :D I tried ice packs last night and it helped a little so hopefully by end of weekend!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,531 ✭✭✭kildareash

    Fingers crossed!
    How r u feeling now?

Collapsed veins are a pain alright...my oh was in hospital for almost 9 months on and off but it's like his veins hide when they see a nurse coming! Even for routine bloods every few months they can have a bit of work trying to get it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭cyning

I'm okay.... hoping to go to Limerick tomorrow (while I still have the effects of all the glucose they gave me!) buy a new fridge, buy some maternity clothes and just forget about being sick for a a few hours... thats all I want :D

My veins just hate me at the best of times: they had to try half way between my hands and elbow this time too and even at that they were having awful bother.

And 9 months  at least it's gauranteed to be over in 9 months for me...

On a plus note I can not get enough of mint crisp bars and salty chips... desperately unhealthy though!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,237 ✭✭✭javagal

Just back from hospital. Baby is healthy and happy. Right on size. But i have to say my doctor was so cold. And the machine gave terrible unclear pictures. I.m upset with them to be honest. One of the picture just looks like a squirrel. But baby is healthy that.s all that matters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,260 ✭✭✭Mink

Java which hospital did you go to? It really is the luck of the draw who you get. Do you think it might be worth it at all to make a complaint and see if you can get rescanned on a different machine?

Went well in Rotunda today. I have to say, all the staff were really lovely, it's just so badly signposted that all us newbies didn't know where we were going or who we were seeing half the time. One of us would figure it out and tell the next girl who came down the hall! Was there 2.5hrs :p

The scan was unreal. I can't get over how much the baby has grown in 3 weeks!! The prints that came out don't look like much but on screen it was so cool to see. Could see the shape of the face and the little hands and feet. That child is seriously bating the sh1te out of me in there, I'm worried re when they are big enough for me to feel it! I can't believe how active baby is, just jumping all over the gaff. I sort of knew to expect it from what others had said re their 12 wk scan but it was still a shock.

Get to see them again Tuesday for the private NT scan :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭cyning

Oh Java that sucks... Especially when you were so looking forward to it :( was baby moving a lot or anything? There is nothing worse than a nurse or a doctor being cold... bedside manner counts for alot
