Just got Small Soldiers for the PS1 for 99p aswell.

Watched the film of that with the little lad there about 2 weeks ago, very good it is  There will be no mercy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,790 ✭✭✭Jack burton

Thats for everyone working in an office where they can get away with watching youtube :pac:

But yeah, loved that film when i was younger, Too bad its just pegged as a film trying to cash on on toy storys success, which it was haha, still good though.

Its great going back to childrens films from the 80's and early 90's. They are still enjoyable now even though im almost 22. The Monster Squad for example, watch that and the dialogue between the 2 cops is better than most cop films

I dunno, Toy Story is a milestone indeed, but if toys could actually think, Small Soldiers would be far closer to the reality of it :D

Oh yeah Small Soldiers is different to Toy Story definitely, but its toys basically coming to life and it came out in between Toy Story 1 and 2 so comparisons are inevitable.

Just comes across like someone who's read a bunch of technical terms on Wikipedia or something and is just regurgitating it here. You don't seem to know how they actually work and are applied..

Well then I'd like know what they are called if not pixel shaders or are you just not going to contribute and put people down?

Yeah lemonhead could you please say what pixel shaders are then

I think it has something to do with lemons.

As someone who's worked with 3D graphics on and off for the last forever amount of years this little snippet explains them fairly simply. It's an old explanation as to what they are but still holds up.
A Pixel Shader is a graphics function that calculates effects on a per-pixel basis. Depending on resolution, in excess of 2 million pixels may need to be rendered, lit, shaded, and colored for each frame, at 60 frames per second. That in turn creates a tremendous computational load. Modern cards process this load through Pixel Shaders. Per-pixel shading brings out a high level of surface detail-allowing you to see effects beyond the triangle level. Rather than simply choosing from a pre compiled palette of effects, developers can create their own. Pixel Shaders provide developers with the control for determining the lighting, shading, and color of each individual pixel, allowing them to create some really cool effects.

I just copied and pasted from another site but if I had to explain it to someone in a sentence then the first line is it "A Pixel Shader is a graphics function that calculates effects on a per-pixel basis".

And would the normal and specular maps added on top of texturers not be classed as pixel shaders because that's what I'm talking about?

Still have my Small Soldiers action figures - they were of damn good quality. Nice sturdy build, unlike the crappy, tiny Star Wars figurines and the like. Lord of the Rings also had stellar collectibles.

Haven't seen it in Small Soldiers in years, but as an 11 year old who barely got into the cinema to see it (damn 12s ratings!) I loved it. Hardly has the emotional punch of Toy Story - damn you, incinerator! - but it has explosions, which is good.

Well, pixel shaders more or less came from texture maps. You could call it an advanced texture map if you like with more control over the final colour before it gets pushed to the output merger.

I'm sure someone here will have a better explanation than me, but thats it more or less.

Picked up Silent Hill Origins on PSP for €6, have to say it's a kinda good game

Just picked up an NTSC SCPH-7001 with cables and a controller (that may or may not work) for €10. Rather pleased with that! :)

Got these in the post today, the Gameboy is in brilliant condition (bar the missing screen) and the games are in good condition as well, all for the high price of €9 :D

I'm going to order a new screen for the Gameboy but am wondering which one to get, the original or Play It Loud screen?

That's a play it loud GB isn't it? I'd go with the play it loud screen definitely.

Also while you're at it, get some DS screen protectors from dealextreme. They fit that GB screen nicely ;)

Not really retro but I got Flower Sun and Rain today for the DS, a rerelease of a PS1 game. I'm hoping for some Suda 51 related craziness! It's going so cheap on amazon that the shipping is almost more expensive than the game.

These landed during the week all the way from Venezuela, only took three months! I know not everyone on here is a fan of sealed games but when they cost as little as they do from South American Countries, what can ya do!

    IMG_20110516_221456.jpg

This is my sealed collection now!

    IMG_20110516_221656.jpg

Also picked up a couple of rarities:

    IMG_20110516_221832.jpg

And a little late, but won first prize in the young lad's Creche for making this Easter bonnet!!

Pretty sure they're not, known sellers on AA, finders of the sealed games in some warehouse. That Bmx Airmaster used to go for a few hundred dollars I think, probably cost me a tenner shipped to my door :pac:

Fair enough the games were far from the covers, but as a young lad your imagination would be racing when you saw the boxes, and the playability was there. And you couldn't be disappointed when you saw the games, cos they were the best there was at the time! Ah great, simple, days...

Honestly, lads this is the "Post here every time you get something new" thread not the "lets pee against a wall and see who pees higher" thread (photos or it didn't happen, natch).

    People have opinions.
You don't have to be a specialist in a field to have a valid one.
You should respect each others opinions and have the maturity to know that someone will always differ with you and you shouldn't take it personally.

Please quit the ongoing argument here, not interested in further talk of rendering engines and who has the biggest peer reviewed doo-dah.
If you want to discuss it maturely, and no that doesn't mean naked pictures of the wimmins, then form a new thread, call it what you want and debate to your hearts content, but keep it grown up, please.

That is all, thanks for playing, and remember kids don't try this at home, do it in school where all your mates can see!

Picked up a Yellow GB in exactly the same condition yesterday myself! Had a spare Play It Loud screen so used that. Wouldn't look right with a light grey 'classic' screen. Have built up a reasonable collection of different colour DMGs and GB Pockets, now to start sticking backlights into them!

Another eBay win today, I got a near mint looking copy of R-Type:Final for the PS2 (a console I don't own yet but now have two games for it!).

    How much?

    £2.

    :D

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,850 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

2 euro, not bad. Really not a big fan of the game though. If you want a really good shmup for the PS2 then pick up Gradius V, should be going for peanuts.

Gradius 5 - where the bosses have more forms that most games have stages!

Keep forgetting to pick up Sin & Punishment 2 actually. Will have to put in the basket next time I'm getting something from Amazon as it has predictably disappeared off retail shelves.

I saw it in HMV Henry st. today, for around €25 second hand. I was hoping it'd drop in price a bit more, but I guess it's rare enough that it won't now.

    I'm such a freak. I just went -

'There's a Sin and Punishment 2?!!?! I must buy that!'

Then realized not only do I own it, I've played it lots and think it's one of the best games on the Wii.

Seems I've been neglecting that one!

Oh, and yes, make sure to buy that game as soon as you can. It's brilliant.

Can't find a super cheap copy. Though of course I'll buy it one day. So far I have Gunbird and R-Type:Final for PS2 and I don't even have a PS2!

Back to the Dreamcast titles I go. :)

Yeah pretty sure I picked it up for around 20 last year. They had a copy in CeX in town, but probably well gone at this point.

My Dreamcast SD card adapter thingy arrived in the post. Will see if I can get it up and running some games tonight.

It's fairly thrown together. There's still dust and bits inside the cap where someone was sawing the plastic.

Still, if it works at all I'll be happy!

So far so good. Have the Dreamcast booting Dreamshell and reading the SD card. Made the mistake of putting the images on in .CDI though. Apparantly you have to convert them to .ISO. Just converted Mr. Driller. (nice and small, good for testing!)

Will report back in a few! :)

You have to convert the Dreamcast .CDI image to .ISO.

You then have to mount the ISO, extract it's contents into a folder with this .bat. You then run that and it creates a new image that'll run in Dreamshell.

I tried Mr. Driller and got a bit further than last time but no game. (It's possible it's one of the games that's not working)

I have a list of ones that do work, so I'll give one of them a go now.

Exellent, it works! Got Namco Museum working. It's a good one for messing about with as the game only comes to about 5mb.

Now, on to Mars Matrix. Have all my fingers crossed for this one as I could never get the image to burn properly.

    Another double Adverts deal.

    First deal - € 15 wielded:

    Resident Evil 3
    Wild 9
    Tony Hawks Skateboarding
    Driver

    All boxed with manuals.

Second deal was meant to be (for €12):

    Worms
    Everybody's Golf
    Tomb Raider
    Tony Hawks 2
    Tony Hawks 3

But the seller gave me the rest of his games at no extra price, so I got:

    2 x Driver
    Gran Turismo
    Micro Maniacs
    Thrasher: Skate & Destroy
    MTV Pure Ride
    007: Tomorrow Never dies
    F1 Championship: Season 2000
    2 x Driver 2
Ridge Racer 4 w/ Ridge Racer Demo
    Croc: Legend of the Gobbo
    No Fear: Downhill Mountain Biking
    Dino Crisis
    Tomb Raider III
    Tony Hawks 4
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
    Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
    Tony Hawks Skateboarding
    This Is Football 2
    Formula One '99
    Miracle Space Race
    Le Mans 24 Hours

All games are in different states - some are disc only, some with good cases and manual, some with no cover slip or front cover... But for €12 it feels like a jackpot!!

Worked fine for me as far as I remember, I couldn't get the second disc of Grandia 2 to work though... after spending ages getting the first one sorted. Doh.

If you don't get MM to work on this new fangled thingummy you're welcome to that *totally legitimate* copy of it.

    My Green Goblin arrived today!

    Gems on the way include:

    Gunbird (PS2)
    R-Type: Final (PS2)
A 5v DC power supply for my scaler
PSX and PS2 err.... handy chips for Docentore to play with. :D
    A PS2 for 25 European milk tokens

and HOPEFULLY a copy of Gigawing 2 (NTSC-J) if I'm extra well behaved!

Next task? Scouring for parts to harrass KO Kiki with. :D

Scouring a couple of Dual Shock PSX controllers if anyone has/knows of any going super cheap?

I provisionally bought a brand new sealed jap copy of pokemon channel on the gamecube! I seriously need to stop buying things, I've got a debs and holiday spending money to pay for.

    ...I've got a debs...to pay for.

Ah to be young again! When all you had to worry about was paying for your debs and remembering not to puke on your rental tux :P

In the process of ordering yet another custom gameboy. This one is a grey DMG with a biverted yellow backlight, pro-sound mod and play-it-loud screen and buttons. Biversion really ups the contrast of the screen so it should be good for general gaming as well as LSDJ, Nanoloop and other music-related stuff.
