Got a dorsal slit just under a week ago.

Foreskin is really swelled, this happen to anyone else? How long does it take for the swelling to go down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

it will be around four weeks before ur back running but it may be longer. It all depends and each case is different. Im coming along well but am just wondering. When the stitches begin to dissolve is it more sensitive with shooting pain if something rubs off them? Im experiencing that at the moment and it feels like a bit of a setback.
Still so glad i had the op and cant wait to be over it fully, really cant believe i dodged getting iit sorted for so long

Also, wheb should you stop the salt bathes?

You have to push for them to get it done on the NTPF. You have to actively chase them up otherwise you will languish on the public list forever

Almost two weeks in and i am beginning to adjust to my new layout below!!!

I have had practically no bleeding, but the stiches are now starting to bleed a little, i think its because they are starting to dissolve, is this normal?

I didnt realise so many lads are in the same boat! Did any one hear of paraphimosis secondary? and if so, what the recommendations are for it. I was informed I need a full circumcision but want to explore all avenues before i go ahead and get it done.

It stands for natural treatment purchase fund!! I got circumcised in January. It started by me going to the doctor in late October 08,sent to a Urologist in December and,as i said,i had it done on January the 6th! All very fast, but as was previously stated, you have to press it with the NTPF. I also got my tonsils out 2 weeks ago under the fund! Happy days!

I had my consultation this morning. Doctor was very nice and informative, said that in my case that a circumcision is not necessary. It's not painful, it doesn't effect my sex life and I don't have issues with infections etc. He said while it's the norm for foreskin to retract, it's doesn't have to retract. He checked it out and said that all looked healthy, so, happy days! :)

    eh, no.

You'll be as high as a kite, you'll need someone to bring you home.

It'll depend what anaesthetic they use but i doubt you could make it home alone unaided.

Hi all, Ive been reading this forum and Ive found it great info.
    Thanks everyone!
My boyfriend had a circumcision nearly two weeks ago in James's and he's still in a awful state. Hasnt been able to go to work, bottom of his penis swelled up and there's yellow pus there, sometimes mixed with blood. About 1cm down from the top is an open wound that's bleeding regularly. We went to James's Fri night and he has a appt with his urologist next week. All his stiches still in, he can't really see them.
He hasnt been able to wear anything at all, not even dressings I bought him.
Has anyone had this experience and how was it sorted out?
Any help please would be great as he's really down about it and he's sick of the pain and not being able to go out!:(

No, i didn't have such bad complications. No complications at all really. Nobody here is allowed to give medical advice. He should seek medical advice from his GP if it's as bad as you say.

    A little bit, it improved.

    Hello There,

To be honest urinating fo me has been great since the op, before the procedure i had to sit down all the time because it was spraying all over the place, now its great i can stand up, it may just be swelling that is causing u the problems, wait for it to go down and then see.

I had the op done just over four weeks ago, the last of the stiches came out last night, didnt expect it woudl take quite so long.

Anyway I have noticed that almsost overnight two tiny lumps have appeared near the scar joint, they are tiny little capers, soft to touch, is this normal? I expect they will disappear.

Dont want medical advice, just wondering if anyon else has had them?

Hi guys. I myself had the op 11 days ago. Always knew I needed a circ but kept putting it off. Was in a relationship for years and my partner was always careful not to be too 'rough' with me, lol. My foreskin never fully retracted and sex was painful sometimes.

I went private, waited about 6 weeks. Had a general an. and was home the same day. I was told to keep the dressing on for 4 days then remove it in the shower/bath. When I took it off I was kinda shocked at first but got used to the new look. Though there was bruising down the shaft of my penis and dried blood around some of the stitches.

For the first week after the op, I was john wayning around the apartmenting, anytime my boxers touched the stitches it would hurt, a lot! Sensitivity was quite high the first few days but now it's not so bad.

Boners at night haven't hurt too much. I did wake up every couple of hours the first few days in fear of the stitches tearing but it never happened. Now it's not so bad. Sometimes I still wake up but it doesn't hurt. I do a bit of flexing when I get hard just to encourage the erection a bit, just to see that everything still works! :) Im still sitting down to pee as if just sprays all over the place. But it's getting better day by day.

I've been off work for a week now and heading back in tomorrow. I still need to be careful walking cos some of the stitches are quite sharp and get caught in my clothes. Hoping they'll disolve out soon.

All in all i'm happy so far. I didn't read this thread before the op but I have to say I found great comfort in reading it during my initial recovery. I know I have a few weeks to go yet but just wanted to say thanks to everyone for being so open and honest about their 'embarassing' problem! And thanks to TBC for starting it all those years ago!

not medical advice, but I have one of these as well, I think - I stress think, I don't really remember - the doc told me it was scar tissue from the stitches. Would that make sense, position wise? I still have them, but forgot about them till you mentioned that.
And thanks to TBC for starting it all those years ago!
and thank you - every post increases the chance that someone will find the thread - glad you did too :)

I was told that you can't be erect when you stretch - open to correction on that tho.

I promise - there's no censoring of posts on this thread. I'm not interested in persuading people to get it done, just getting more info out there on it. I'd actually welcome some horror stories, because to be honest, the fact that so many stories - not all - but the vast majority - are positive, and overwhelmingly positive, makes me look like a shill for some clinic somewhere :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,231 ✭✭✭Fad

No horror story from me, but I will say, be careful with what you read on the internet about it. There is an awful lot of stuff out there that is just completely untrue. So in short, take what you read with a grain of salt and see an actual doctor.

any time I have sex without a condom my foreskin takes a day or two to go back over the glans. Why is this?

It doesn't appear too tight behind the glans and the blood flow is fine but it's annoying.

I had my consultation this morning with a private clinic here in the UK. We had a chat about the procedure, any personal preferences I may have, how long a circumcision takes, the use of local anesthetic, and so on. The clinic is ran by two vastly experienced paediatric surgeons who work full-time for the NHS. The cost would be £550, and check-ups afterwards are free of charge. Now I need to decide when to have it done, before Christmas, perhaps?

I have problems after intercourse with my foreskin as well.It gets sore afterwards. My family doctor said that there is an excess of skin and he wont recommend circumcision.
I didn't think this was a common thing and have been putting (No pun intended) up with for years.
Another doctor said he would refer me but how long after the op will the pain be gone ?

My boyfriend had a circumcision about 3 months ago now due to medical reasons and he still is having problems, when we have sex he gets tender and sometimes we have to stop, does anyone else get this problem? he also has a lump on his penis near the stitches but were just putting it down to scar tissue.

I *maybe* having my circumcision tomorrow evening. The clinic has a free time-slot, so I told them I would sleep on it and that I would give them a call in the morning. I must say I'm rather nervous.

    Hi everyone,

I had my circumcision this evening. I had a loose (partial) circumcision at a private clinic, carried out by two pediatric surgeons. The circumcision was carried out under local anesthetic, and boy was the first five minutes uncomfortable, mainly due to the numbness kicking in. The procedure took 50 minutes in total. I listened to my iPod for the most part of it. The two guys who did it were easy going and had a good sense of humour which made me feel relaxed.

When I got home my boxers and joggy bottoms were caked in blood, so my mother (a nurse) decided to replace the smaller bandage with a larger bandage, which was given to me by the guys, around my dinkle. I've found going for a pee is rather difficult at the moment :(. Well, I can't see me getting much sleep tonight, I think I'll watch a film to pass the time.

By the way, my reason for getting a circumcision was due to tightness and various other problems with my foreskin. Problems that I have suffered since the age of 12, I'm now 25. I've tried other methods of solving the problem but none worked, hence the circumcision. I can't wait to test the little guy out in about 8 weeks. ;)

My dinkle is huge! The swelling has really hit in overnight. I managed to dip my dinkle in a cup of salty water this evening - the first two minutes was quite painful but it felt better after ten minutes. I have nothing to do apart from read a book, watch a few films and play Football Manager.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15 Jim_Ben

The swelling has decreased significantly. My testicles are a tad sore but much better than a week ago. I had a full-on shower last night and it felt great! I've been dipping my dinkle into a cup of salty water every 48 hours, and into a cup of chamomile tea every 24 hours. I've not had any problems with my glans since my circumcision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,822 ✭✭✭Morf

Good to hear it's going well for you.

I've heard mixed reports on the act of washing/rinsing it in salt water.

I was personally told not to do it.

    Thanks Morf.

I've only used the salty water three times - that was enough for me. I have to say the chamomile tea has been great, very soothing before bed time.

I had a circumcision when I was about 7. I have had no problems, discomfort etc and almost any girl I have been with comments on it and they think its either cool, sexy and some of them have said its feels cleaner as well. A friend of mine had the same op and he gets much the same comments.

hey lads, I had my op 5 weeks ago. Ive noticed I cant seem to get a full erection. It only goes to 5 inches instead of over 6 and is really thick. Could this be due to undisolved stitches?! I need to see a doctor....

I got the bill that the VHI paid for the op under general aesthetic in a private hospital. The operation (including aesthetic) was €381 and the room was nearly €1400.

There was also the GP referral (€50), the urologist consultation (€160) and follow up consultation (€100) that I had to pay myself.

If anyone wants to ask me any questions, ala, where I had it done, price, et al .. feel free to PM me.

Late 30's here. Very tight foreskin that couldn't ever retract but managed to 'survive' until now. Should have dealt with it much sooner but not the easiest thing to deal with as a teenager or ever for that matter.
Sexually everything worked and as the biggest sex organ is the mind I had no real complaints about sensitivity and anyway, I had nothing to benchmark against! But there was always the issue of tearing, infection etc. and I suppose a curiosity about how things 'should be'.

So anyway, I went to my GP around Christmas and was referred to a surgeon for a consultation about having a vasectomy. While I was there, I did the "There's one more thing..." line and the rest is history.
Had the operations on Thursday. I couldn't really read this thread beforehand but managed to read it all today and the support and information on it is brilliant. I didn't get much information while in the hospital because to be honest my blood pressure dropped when the surgeon called around afterward and he quickly left my vicinity to let the nurses look after me!
All the staff were excellent... Went in at 9am, was waiting around for a good while in the hideous gown (brought a book). Anesthetist was a pet... felt the drugs coursing through my vein and then nothingness. Not very sore when I woke up, but uncomfortable just the same. Was bandaged up. Had a shower the next morning and the bandage came off and the emotional difficulties of the dog-chewed look (great description lol) were harder to deal with than any physical pain. Supposed to pull the skin back in the shower but that's not easy. There's plenty of sensitivity and the careful movements around the house are more in fear/anticipation of feeling something than actually feeling it if that makes sense.
Getting into comfortable positions can be a little difficult. Not loving it but this too shall pass. The earlier posts about being patient have been a great help. Fingers crossed.

The penis itself is covered in a plastic wrapping with the hole uncovered for me to urinate. There is a little bit of bruising and some bleeding from where the frenulum was but I was told this is due to my heart rate. If I rest then the bleeding will be minimal, if any at all. It will take approximately 6 weeks for the scar to heal. Also the plastic wrapping is to come off tomorrow during a lukewarm bath.

Reading a lot of post's here can I ask what the benefit in this procedure is?

Other than medically needing it because of unusually tight foreskin, is there actually a reason to have this procedure, does it improve sex life for someone who doesn't have it and has had no problems thus far. If it's not about sex then is there a matter of the look and feel of the penis or of the hygiene?

As a young man in his mid 20's I'm just curious as to why people get this procedure done

the answer to all your questions is "yes" :)

In my case, my foreskin didn't have any elasticity, so when I *could* retract it, I'd get lots of little "paper cuts", but normally I couldn't retract it.
Sex was like sex with four condoms, no sensation at all really. Couldn't keep it clean, it was itchy and unpleasant, to be frank. Not very nice when you're with a girl for the first time, having to explain, y'know?

Well it all didn't go swimmingly for me either....
The ops (circumcision & vasectomy together) were done on a Thursday... no real issues.
Fairly tender but not too painful.. very sensitive alright. I was prescribed ponstan forte 500 and could also take paracetamol.

Anyway, over the weekend and into the Monday everything seemed to be a bit too inflamed and the glans was super sensitive. Now this had never really seen the light of day due to a foreskin that couldn't ever retract so maybe that was contributing to it. The only real relief I could get was taking long soaks in the bath with epsom salts. I phoned the surgeon on the Tuesday morning (D-day +5) and he was able to see me in the county hospital and gave me a prescription for antibiotics... Augmentin Duo (500/125 I think). The wound was healing fairly well I thought but the sensitivity was still intense.
I was using melolin pads, vaseline and conforming bandage, taped up with silk tape at night time... letting it all hang out whenever I could.

So, Thursday was one week on and Thursday night into Friday morning I decided this wasn't working so I went to see a GP in my local medical centre... was out of pads so couldn't bandage it up. Driving wasn't pleasant, walking the short distance from the car to the doctors office was worse. Hand inside the tracksuit, looked like a dodgy sort of bloke :)
The doctor had the sort of reaction you'd expect any normal man to have - "Oh my God!" He gave me the martyr of the week award. It was a fairly heavy case of balanitis and he told me to stop taking the current antibiotics and gave me Flucloxacillin (4 times a day) and Calvepen (3 times).
So after taking them for half a day on Friday and all day Yesterday I finally began to feel a bit more normal today. 1 stitch came out this morning (hard black yoke, certainly not dissolved) and there was a small bit of bleeding along the cut line but I wasn't really worried about that because the glans seemed to be a bit clearer. This evening it's fairly comfortable - I've had to keep it bandaged because of people in the house and also can get dressed and feel more human rather than having it hanging over my pyjamas with the curtains drawn.
    Getting there.

    Hey guys

I have a prob with tight foreskin. I dont have any problem retracting it when flacid however when i have an erection it becomes difficult to refract. It is possible to retract my foreskin when erect but it can become very uncomfortable as the foreskin tends to be very tight just beyond the glans. It kinda 'digs in' around the head for lack of a better expression. Generally i dont have this problem with the tightness when the foreskin is retracted while flacid and when i then proceed to get an erection. Obviously this isn't viable when things happen in the heat of the moment!!

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and the procedures they chos to correct it?

I'm due for a frenulotomy fri but i'm not sure if this will solve my prob. Has anyone here had this procedure and did it work for them?

From looking on net it looks like preputioplasty would be the answer to my probs but is it common? anyone here had it done.

I want to explore all avenues as i really dont want a circumcision. Also what's a part circumcision?

Op was 2 weeks ago today.
Been taking 2 antibiotics for the last 6 days on top of the augmentin duo I had taken for the previous 3.5 days.

It seems to be healing and the infection is dying down but there are still some traces of it remaining. Another stitch was out this morning - either I have had 2 different kinds of stitches or else I had a reaction to some of them because some were black and some were white. The black ones are gone now but they all were hard and intact (still knotted) when they came out so it was the body that dissolved rather than the stitch :)
The 4 that still remain are white and softer.
Where the black one came out this morning, the cut is the least healed but in general the wound is healing nicely and I'm pleased with it. I was surprised this morning to find it looking so improved, probably helped by the swelling having gone down too.

The glans still had matter on it and most of this comes away with the saline dip. There is still a couple of sore points on the glans and I'm concerned about my course of antibiotics ending tomorrow before it's fully healed so I've put in a call to my GP and will discuss that with him later today.

I wasn't prepared to be out of action for 2+ weeks and am finding it tough going at times but still trying to keep the chin up. Looking forward to getting out and about.
When I have to go out and also in bed at night, the melonin pads with vaseline, conforming bandage and silk tape is the business. Got a couple of tight enough briefs too and need to get more of them as they seem like the best idea. Still, the thought of tucking Mr. Man into the jocks without any bandage makes me wince a little so I'm not 'cured' yet :)

Well I happened to come across this thread about a month ago and didnt realise how many people were affected by it. Basically like most here i have a tight foreskin....phimosis. Never been able to retract my foreskin, even when flaccid. Now I thought it was something i'd just live with but it was kinda ruining my sex life. When I wear a condom the sensitivity is so little that there are times i'd actually lose my erection, when not wearing one intercourse is just very uncomfortable and painful. Anyway I managed to just get on with it.....

So after reading through this thread i plucked up the courage to go and see a gp, went in told him, he took a look, asked if i was ever able to retract it. I told him no so he said i should see a general surgeon to see what he could do. He said it would most likely be a circumcision. Was only in there for 5 mins but its like a weight lifted off my shoulders now that i've faced up to it.

So i have an appointment to see a general surgeon at the end of the month. I have medical ins. so am going private. Anyone have an idea of the timescale from the initial consultation to the op? kinda wanna have done and dusted before summer.

    oh i'm 25 btw

Depends on the cover you have and how long you have cover, if you have less than 2 years (or is it 5) it would probably be considered a pre-existing condition (the only way to find out is to ring them), they covered 100% of my costs (apart from the consultations before and after) - this was on plan C
