    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with some afternoon sunny intervals, showers becoming less frequent. Moderate southwest winds will ease later, with highs about 12-14 C.

TONIGHT ... Becoming windy again with showers or longer periods of rain developing, 5-15 mm likely. Lows 5-7 C.

MONDAY ... Windy and cold with passing showers, some becoming wintry especially on higher terrain by afternoon and evening, but can't rule out a wintry shower even near sea level by late in the day (very cold air aloft may lead to thunder with some of the showers). Winds SW to W 50-70 km/hr adding chill to highs only 5-8 C.

TUESDAY ... Morning frosts in some places, then mixture of cloud and sunshine but cold, with isolated wintry showers and continuing blustery westerly winds turning more to northwest later in the day, morning lows -2 to +3 C and afternoon highs about 7 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Intervals of rain or sleet early morning, clearing during the daytime hours but then some isolated wintry showers developing in streamers as winds become north to northeast 30-50 km/hr. Morning lows 2-4 C and afternoon highs about 8 C.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, some of them still wintry, morning lows -2 to +3 C and afternoon highs 6-9 C.

OUTLOOK ... Mainly dry with some sunshine each day Friday through the weekend of 23rd-24th, still rather cold at night but milder daytime temperatures developing, typical lows -2 to +4 C and highs 10-13 C.

My local weather on Saturday started cloudy with light rain and then slowly cleared during the afternoon with highs near 8 C. The rather cold spell in eastern parts of North America is slowly fading now and will be replaced by a few milder days.

    Forecasts for Ireland

It may not feel like it, but spring begins at 10:30 with the vernal equinox. Some spring weather may put in an appearance around Friday or Saturday.

TODAY ... Windy and cold with some sunny breaks this morning, widespread wintry showers developing by mid-day near Atlantic coasts and higher terrain inland, these spreading further east where the wintry components will be more likely to fall on higher terrain. Winds SW 50-70 km/hr will add considerable chill to temperatures only in the 6-9 C range for many (could be closer to 10 C south coast).

TONIGHT ... Further wintry showers quite likely but a slow clearing trend after midnight, very cold, frosts inland. Lows -3 to +2 C.

TUESDAY ... Windy and very cold at times with passing wintry showers, highs near 7 or 8 C and moderate southwest to west winds 40-60 km/hr adding more chill. Snow is possible especially on hilly terrain but amounts would likely be about 1 or 2 cm where it does fall.

WEDNESDAY ... Risk of early morning snow or sleet in Leinster, otherwise clear intervals and very cold, lows near -3 C with frost likely. The snow might spread back from a low pressure system moving north into the Irish Sea and confidence is not yet very high as some guidance shows this moving more towards Wales. However that plays out, the rest of the day will likely be quite cold with passing wintry showers this time in a northerly to northeasterly wind of about 50 km/hr. Some bands of these wintry showers could be rather heavy in parts of Leinster and also in the northwest from the Donegal Bay region. Highs will reach about 8 C but temperatures could fall back to 3-6 C in showery intervals.

THURSDAY ... Little change in the pattern yet, although the coverage of wintry showers might decrease in favour of cold wintry sunshine in a continuing northeast wind of 30-50 km/hr. Morning lows -4 to -1 C with heavy frost in some places, and afternoon highs about 7 or 8 C.

FRIDAY ... Sunny with cloudy intervals, cold but winds not as strong. Lows about -3 C with frost, highs about 9 C.

OUTLOOK ... Somewhat warmer days will follow, as the arctic high pressure responsible for the cold spell settles in and joins up with the distant Azores high, gradually it should feel warmer in the daytime hours but the nights will continue to be frosty and cold. Much less windy too, so the days will at least feel more like spring with highs into the 11-14 C range. This dry and settled spell will last a few days past the weekend (25th-26th) and then it looks like a return to unsettled frontal systems from the Atlantic coming back to dominance about the first of April (and that's no joke unfortunately).

    :)

My local weather on Sunday caused mass celebrations and sacrifices as a golden orb appeared in the sky, an object of much wonderment and if we could just get it to cast heat as well as light, then all would be perfect. The highs were about 8 C. (one can conclude that yes, it has been cloudy almost every day this month).

    Forecasts for Ireland

ALERT for widespread wintry showers again today, some accumulations of snow likely in higher parts of Connacht and west Munster, also in Ulster. WATCH situation for possible snowfall in parts of Leinster, east Munster late tonight into Wednesday morning. This snowfall could be heavy on higher terrain in that region. A watch is issued when confidence is lower than required for an alert. An update will be issued this evening to clarify the chances of this event being widespread as some guidance indicates, or confined to a few higher locations as other guidance indicates. The snow would be spread by weak low pressure circling around in the southern Irish Sea; if that system is a bit stronger and makes a wider turn (closer to Dublin) then the snow could spread as far back to the west as Thurles to Athlone. If not, the snow may be largely confined to higher parts of south Dublin, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford.

TUESDAY ... Windy and very cold at times with passing wintry showers, highs near 7 or 8 C and moderate southwest to west winds 40-60 km/hr adding more chill. Temperatures could fall back to 1 to 4 C during snow showers. Snow is most likely near hilly terrain and amounts would likely be about 1 or 2 cm where it does fall. By afternoon, winds will drop off to light southerly then east to northeast 30-50 km/hr by evening.

TONIGHT ... Some outbreaks of light rain, sleet or wet snow may develop across parts of the south with isolated wintry showers further north, some clear areas such as inland west Ulster could see a sharp frost developing by midnight. The mixed precipitation might turn to heavy wet snow accumulating on hills in south and central Leinster, east Munster towards morning. Lows generally -2 to +2 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Risk of early morning snow or sleet in Leinster, some parts of east Munster (see alert/watch section above for more details), otherwise clear intervals during the night and also into the daytime hours, quite cold, lows near -2 C with frost likely. However widespread the mixed precipitation becomes in the southeast, the rest of the day will likely be quite cold with passing wintry showers this time in a northerly to northeasterly wind of about 50 km/hr. Some bands of these wintry showers could be rather heavy in parts of Leinster and also in the northwest from the Donegal Bay region. Highs will reach 5 to about 8 C but temperatures could fall back to 2-5 C in showery intervals.

OUTLOOK ... The weekend will be dry with some sunshine each day, frosts at night but milder in the daytime, with light winds, highs 10-13 C. This dry spell will slowly transition to an unsettled, mild southwesterly flow by about the end of the month.

My local weather on Monday was cloudy but reasonably mild at about 10 C.

Watch for an update then about tonight's potential snow event and check into the ongoing thread(s) on the weather forum for developments.

    UPDATE __ 9 p.m. Tuesday, 21 March, 2017
    _________________________________________

The watch is upgraded to an ALERT for outbreaks of heavy wet snow by later tonight and the first half of Wednesday, affecting inland portions of Leinster and east Munster, possibly a few adjacent parts of east Galway and south Roscommon, as well as isolated higher parts of Connacht and west Ulster which could continue to see localized snowfall not part of the system being tracked for the east and southeast.

The current sleety rainfall covering much of central and southern counties will slowly transition to wet snow except for more persistent sleety rain in a few places close to the Irish Sea coast (extending further inland to the north of Dublin across Meath). Eventually I expect the change-over to snow will take place at fairly low elevations in counties such as Dublin (mainly west of the city), Wicklow (excluding coastal areas), Kildare, Laois, Offaly, Carlow, Kilkenny, parts of Tipperary and Waterford, inland Wexford. There is potential for 2-5 cm of snow to accumulate but parts of that may melt on contact with pavement, so it may be lying thicker on grassy surfaces by morning.

There will probably be mixing with rain in places so the coverage may not be uniform across the inland southeast. Heavier amounts of 5 to 15 cms could fall on some higher terrain especially the Wicklow and south Dublin hills.

This wet snow is likely to change back to rain in many places by mid-day tomorrow and will then be more confined to higher ground. Some of the rain may also become heavy, first near the Dublin-Meath coastal region before the change-over begins inland, then extending through places that had received some snow in Dublin and Kildare into Laois. With this heavier rain will come moderate to strong northeast winds of 50-80 km/hr locally. A similar increase in rainfall and wind will affect coastal Wicklow and then Wexford at later times during the afternoon as the low pressure area responsible slowly moves back to the south.

The morning forecast will have the next update on this snowfall situation.

    Forecasts for Ireland

ALERT for heavy wet snow in parts of inland south Leinster and Munster, now including west Munster as the area of snow expands further west. Although the snow may change to sleet at times, with ice pellets mixing in, there could be some heavy falls in counties between Cork and Laois, as well as higher parts of Kildare, Dublin and Wicklow. Amounts will range from 3 to 10 cms, but not all of the snow will stick to pavements and roads. Some heavy sleety rain may also fall closer to the Irish Sea coastline including significant parts of Dublin, conditions made worse by raw northeast winds gusting at times to 60 km/hr.

    FORECASTS

TODAY ... Outbreaks of heavy wet snow (3 to 10 cms) likely in the inland south from Cork to Wicklow, mixing at times with sleet and ice pellets. See alert for more details. Wet snow will change to rain in some parts of Kildare, Dublin and Meath, and this may become heavy at times in moderate northeast winds 40-60 km/hr. Parts of the northwest will be dry with sunny intervals despite a lot of higher cloud, and cold northeast winds, with isolated snow showers near higher terrain. Highs today will reach only 3-6 C in areas with persistent snow or sleet, and temperatures may be close to 1 or 2 C for a large part of the event. Highs about 5 to 8 C outside the precipitation zone. Some disruption to road travel is possible, mainly along higher and/or less travelled routes. Heavily travelled roads will probably be slushy with a lot of road-spray, drive with caution. Some icy roads are possible and the conditions may be localized in valleys near the western edges of the snowfall.

TONIGHT ... Isolated sleet showers diminishing, still rather raw in northeast winds of 30-50 km/hr, lows -2 to +2 C. Some icy roads likely in parts of the inland south.

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated wintry showers as northeast winds continue at about 30-50 km/hr. Highs 5-9 C. Any leftover snow cover should be gradually melting or just evaporating into the relatively dry air, but snow could continue to lie in shaded spots until Friday.

FRIDAY ... Sharp morning frosts and fog patches, becoming much milder during the day with sunny intervals and possibly unbroken sunshine in some parts, highs will reach 10 to 14 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Slight frosts each night but hazy sun and warm in the daytime, lows -1 to +3 C and highs 11 to 17 C (warmer readings inland and near west coast). You may have noticed that I boosted these daytime forecast temperatures and it could even get warmer than 17 in a few spots as a very large change in the upper air pattern takes place.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Most of next week looks quite warm as well, with a breakdown of the blocking high but enough remaining influence to suggest sunny intervals most days, any passing fronts likely to be relatively moderate and brief in terms of rainfall. Highs 15-20 C during the week.

My local weather was overcast with light rain at times, highs near 10 C.

    Thursday, 23 March, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy, sleety light to moderate rain in parts of central Leinster should begin to die out by afternoon, isolated wintry showers on higher ground, as northeast winds continue at about 30-50 km/hr. Cold with highs 6-10 C.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, cold, frost in low-lying areas, some fog patches may develop. Lows -3 to +2 C.

Light winds but onshore from southeast in Leinster and east Munster.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Most of next week looks quite warm as well with a dry first half, then some showers, with a gradual breakdown of the blocking high but enough remaining influence to suggest sunny intervals most days, any passing fronts after Tuesday likely to be relatively moderate and brief in terms of rainfall possibly somewhat more persistent around Thursday. Highs 15-20 C during the week. Light
winds at first then moderate south to southwest.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with light rain and a chilly high near 8 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunshine will sometimes be obscured by higher cloud, and for parts of the north some low cloud may persist through the morning, but it will be generally a more pleasant day with light east winds that may keep it rather cool near the east coast, but highs will reach 12 to 14 C in the west, 10 to 12 C in the south and east, and 8 to 11 C in the north.

TONIGHT ... Clear with some low cloud or fog possible after midnight, frosts where it remains clear, lows -4 to -1 C for most and about 2 C under any persistent cloud.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Both days should be dry and often sunny, with some cloud infiltrating from the southeast at times. Highs will reach 14 to 17 C in the west and some central counties, about 12 C in the north and also near the south coast, and between 9 and 13 C in Leinster depending on sea breezes, probably closer to 13 for many because the sea breezes will not have a lot of inland fetch. Saturday night will be more or less a repeat of tonight with partly cloudy to clear skies and local frosts or fog patches.

MONDAY will see some increase in cloud and the southeast breezes will be stronger, giving a more distinct contrast in temperatures, the west remaining warm at 14 to 18 C and the east chilly at 10 to 13 C. A little patchy light rain could move into the southwest late in the day.

TUESDAY will see occasional light rain and highs in the 11 to 15 C range.

WEDNESDAY will see stronger winds developing (south to southwest) with gusts to about 70 km/hr and highs will remain about 11 to 15 C for most with outbreaks of showery rain giving 5-10 mm in places.

The further outlook calls for unsettled and breezy weather with near normal temperatures for late March.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with a few breaks and highs near 10 C.

    Saturday, 25 March, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with a few intervals of high cloud that will dim the sunshine at times, but pleasantly warm away from the east coast where sea breezes may hold temperatures down -- highs will reach 15 to 18 C in the west and midlands, about 13 to 15 C south, and about 11 to 14 C in most of Leinster and east Ulster. Even where it's a bit cooler, if you find a spot exposed to the sun and not to the southeast breeze, it will feel quite warm.

TONIGHT ... Clear, local frosts, lows -3 to +2 C.

SUNDAY ... Hazy sunshine, increasing cloud in southwest, warm except for cooling sea breezes near south and east coasts. Highs generally 14 to 18 C, some coastal spots around 10-12 C.

MONDAY ... Partly to mostly cloudy, with similar temperatures to the weekend (morning lows -2 to +3 C and highs 13 to 17 C), and slight chance of intermittent light rain in west Munster late in the day.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, showers, mild. Highs 14-18 C.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will bring a higher chance of rain with more frequent showers but there will be some sunshine each day as well, and highs 13-17 C.

FRIDAY will be rather cloudy with intervals of rain and highs near 15 C.

OUTLOOK ... Somewhat cooler over the weekend of 1st-2nd of April, especially on Saturday (highs near 11 or 12 C) but warming up again into Monday 3rd which could see 15-19 C. Rather warm for about a week into early April.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with some rain at times, highs near 11 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

Just a reminder, the clocks went forward last night and Ireland is now on summer time.

TODAY ... Sunshine becoming somewhat hazy in parts of the south, with increasing cloud by afternoon in southwest, warm except for cooling sea breezes near south and east coasts. Highs generally 14 to 18 C, some coastal spots around 10-12 C. The southeast breezes may be a bit stronger today which may drive the sea breezes further inland.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals with increasing cloud in south and west, lows 4-7 C under cloud and -2 to +3 further north.

My local weather on Saturday was partly cloudy and reasonably mild at 12 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Variable cloud, occasional light rain, but amounts 3-7 mm rather hit or miss, as a band of showers makes further progress northward, followed by a few sunny intervals but also scattered showers in moderate south to southwest winds 40-60 km/hr, highs 14-17 C.

TONIGHT and WEDNESDAY ... Very mild, showers through the night and tomorrow morning, turning to heavy rain by the late afternoon to overnight hours in parts of the south and west. Total rainfalls 10-30 mm by Thursday morning. Lows about 8 C and highs 13-17 C. Winds south to southwest 40-60 km/hr.

THURSDAY ... Some heavy rain likely in Connacht and parts of the inland southeast, local flooding with 20-30 mm possible. More of a showery outcome elsewhere with about 10 mm. Highs near 17 C. Winds southwest 30-50 km/hr.

FRIDAY ... Occasional light rain, turning cooler, highs 13-15 C. Winds light southwest to west becoming northwest by late afternoon, some clearing late in the day for Atlantic coast. Rain will clear east through Friday night, 5-10 mm likely.

SATURDAY ... Fresh and breezy, mostly cloudy with a few showers mainly confined to north by mid-day, lows 7-9 C and highs near 12 C.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will turn warm again with highs possibly reaching 18-20 C in some parts of the inland south. This warm spell may turn wet for a time around Tuesday but warmth will continue into Wednesday and possibly Thursday before a general cooling trend for the second week of April.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with a few showers, highs near 10 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Very mild, showers through the morning, turning to heavy rain by afternoon to overnight hours in parts of the south and west. Total rainfalls 10-30 mm by Thursday morning. Highs 13-17 C, but temperatures will tend to vary more with sky cover than region to region (dropping back somewhat in heavier rain). Winds south to southwest 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Very mild with some further rain although trending to drizzle and fog away from the west coast where somewhat heavier rain will continue at times, lows 10 to 13 C.

THURSDAY ... Some heavy rain likely in Connacht and parts of the inland southeast, local flooding with 15-25 mm possible. More of a showery outcome elsewhere with about 5 to 10 mm. Highs near 17 C. Winds southwest 30-50 km/hr.

FRIDAY ... Occasional light rain, turning slightly cooler, highs 13-15 C. Winds light southwest to west becoming northwest by late afternoon, some clearing late in the day for Atlantic coast. Rain will become heavier in Leinster by afternoon and evening before clearing east through Friday night, 10-20 mm likely there.

SATURDAY ... Fresh and breezy, mostly cloudy with a few showers mainly confined to north by mid-day, lows 7-9 C and highs near 12 C. The afternoon and evening may become quite settled but mist and fog could drift inland over parts of the west and northwest.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will turn warm again with highs possibly reaching 18-20 C on Sunday, 14-17 C Monday in some parts of the inland south. This warm spell may turn wet for a time around Monday evening or overnight, but warmth will continue on Tuesday with highs 17-20 C and into Wednesday (18-21 C) and possibly Thursday 6th of April (18-21 C) before a general cooling trend for the second week of April.

My local weather on Tuesday was very wet, breaking the daily record set 61 years ago with over 30 mm in the bucket by midnight. The high was about 10 C. Meanwhile, a storm brewing south of Bermuda could have some tropical characteristics but whether it gets an official designation or not, the main point of interest with this is eventual phasing with a weaker low off New England to become a powerful snowstorm for Newfoundland around this coming weekend. Otherwise the weather coast to coast is fairly bland and temperatures have dropped back to near normal values except for a continuing warm spell in the southeast U.S. where highs are running 5-10 degrees above normal (near 27 C in places).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Very mild and humid with scattered showers developing, one or two could become thundery in the central counties by afternoon. There will also be some pleasant sunny spells in some places, highs 15-18 C. Average rainfall by this evening about 5-8 mm, locally heavier though. Moderate south to southwest winds at times 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... A band of heavier rain will develop and move near and possibly over the southeast coast, also some outbreaks of showery light rain further west, fog developing in valleys, and lows 9-12 C.

FRIDAY ... Outbreaks of heavy and possibly thundery rain are now indicated for Leinster during the day, and it may be partly cloudy or even sunny further west, but with a risk of scattered showers by late afternoon. Highs 12-15 C. Not as windy but a gradual shift from southerlies to westerlies likely.

SATURDAY ... After the rain ends overnight, clearing during the morning and sunny by afternoon in most places, isolated showers continuing near north coast, lows about 5 C and highs about 12 C.

SUNDAY ... Hazy sunshine in south and east, fog or low cloud at times in parts of north and west but also some hazy sunshine at times, warmer. Lows 4-7 C and highs near 18 C except where sea breezes from south to southwest intrude.

MONDAY ... Increasing cloud, chance of showers late in the day, continued rather warm, highs near 17 C.

TUESDAY will see clearing and continued warm temperatures, and WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY are looking very fine at this point, with high pressure overhead, slack winds and warm sunshine likely, could see readings between 15 and 22 C depending on wind directions in slack sea breeze conditions. The warmer readings appear most likely in west Munster and Connacht. Probably frost-free although one or two of the usual spots in Connacht could see local frost, with a large range in temperature expected from early morning to mid-day.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for a slow deterioration of the warm spell and eventually much cooler by the second week of April in more of a northwesterly flow with temperatures falling back to around 10 C daytimes and near frost at night.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with occasional light rain, some clearing late in the afternoon, and highs near 12 C. The powerful storm I mentioned yesterday is taking shape now south of Nova Scotia and will bring blizzard like conditions to parts of the Atlantic provinces by Friday night and Saturday (northeast winds 100-150 km/hr expected in southeast Newfoundland).

Remnants of that low will be involved in the Monday evening frontal passage but it will be much weaker by then (also the core of this storm will be near Iceland so just a glancing blow for Ireland).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Heavy rain clearing north and east before mid-day, some clearing then a few widely scattered showers developing as somewhat cooler air seeps in from the west, partly cloudy to sunny by afternoon in most places but isolated showers, or light rain under low cloud, near northwest coasts at times, with highs reaching 13-15 C for most, temperatures falling off to near 10 C in the northwest by afternoon.

TONIGHT ... Occasional light rain or drizzle mostly confined to northern and some central counties, cool with lows reaching 3-6 C south and east, 6-9 C west and north.

SATURDAY ... After the rain ends overnight, clearing during the morning and sunny by afternoon in most places, isolated showers continuing near north coast, with highs about 12 C. Moderate west to northwest winds backing to southwest by evening, 30-50 km/hr.

SUNDAY ... Hazy sunshine in south and east, fog or low cloud at times in parts of north and west but also some hazy sunshine at times, warmer after a rather cool early morning. Lows 4-7 C and highs near 18 C except where sea breezes from south to southwest intrude.

MONDAY ... Increasing cloud, chance of showers late in the day, continued rather warm, highs near 17 C. Winds increasing in northwest counties to SW 40-70 km/hr, veering westerly. Winds further south may not increase much but will also veer from south to west during the night.

TUESDAY will see clearing and continued warm temperatures with morning lows 5 to 8 C, afternoon highs 17-20 C warmest in the inland southeast.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY are looking very fine at this point, with high pressure overhead, slack winds and warm sunshine likely, and inland locations could see readings between 18 and 22 C depending on wind directions in slack sea breeze conditions that may restrict highs near coasts to 14 C. The warmer readings appear most likely in west Munster and Connacht. Probably frost-free although one or two of the usual spots in Connacht could see local frost, with a large range in temperature expected from early morning to mid-day.

By FRIDAY this warm settled spell may at least begin to cool down to more average April temperatures although it could remain sunny and pleasant enough at 14 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for a slow deterioration of the warm spell and eventually much cooler by the second week of April in more of a northwesterly flow with temperatures falling back to around 10 C daytimes and near frost at night. However, this change may take most of the weekend of 8th-9th to complete. It's a situation where Britain may get into cooler northerlies first as high pressure weakens but remains close to Ireland partially blocking the colder regime for a while; eventually, this will change to a more widespread northerly period with high temperatures falling back to 8-11 C, also frequent showers some becoming wintry on hills. This colder regime looks like it wants to dig in for about a week and may still be ongoing by the Easter weekend although we could hope this will prove too pessimistic closer to the time.

My local weather on Thursday was somewhat improved with partly cloudy skies, rather cool at 10-12 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy with some widely scattered showers, becoming more confined to east-central counties by afternoon. Some parts of the south could have a dry day and where it does rain, average amounts only 2-5 mm. A rather cool westerly breeze, sometimes northwesterly, at 40-60 km/hr, but the sun will feel warm especially out of that breeze, with highs 12-15 C.

TONIGHT ... Some clearing, mist and fog patches, rather cold with lows 2-5 C and isolated frost in parts of the central counties and Connacht.

SUNDAY ... Hazy sunshine except for some persistent low cloud near some western coasts, warming up during the mid-day and afternoon to reach highs of 16-18 C.

MONDAY ... Variable cloud, a few showers becoming longer intervals of rain by afternoon and evening, rather windy in the northern counties (SW 50-80 km/hr), breezy further south, morning lows about 8 C and afternoon highs 14 to 18 C with warmest readings inland south.

TUESDAY ... Morning showers and gusty winds will tend to ease quite early on for most, persisting in parts of north Connacht and west Ulster to mid-day. Gradual clearing is likely across the south with some pleasantly warm temperatures developing there. Morning lows will be 5-7 C and afternoon highs will range from about 17 C in the inland south to 13 C in the north.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY currently looking settled and rather warm away from any locally cooling sea breezes in a generally light wind field. Some guidance keeps a moderate westerly flow for the north and restricts the light winds to the inland south. Other guidance suggests all of the country under a very slack wind regime which would probably be somewhat warmer for the north as a result. We'll split the difference at this point to suggest highs generally 15-19 C in the south, 11-15 C in some sea breeze zones and 12-16 C north. It could end up near 20 C in a few favoured spots. The east coast should avoid dramatic sea breeze cooling so long as the flow has some westerly influence left, at worst a weak sea breeze might keep things a few degrees cooler within 1-3 kms of the Irish Sea; this pattern favours stronger sea breezes in the north, northwest and parts of the south coast too. Nights during this settled spell could produce local frosts in the inland south or even further north if cloud is not too widespread, but there will be readings closer to 5 C under persistent cloud at night.

The further outlook is definitely colder for parts of the mid-month period but there is currently some hope that the warm, dry interval next week could hold on through the weekend of 8th-9th April before that colder air begins to push south.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with highs near 11 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals for most the day in south and east, increasing cloud west and north. Light winds becoming south to southwest 30-50 km/hr by afternoon (more like 50-70 km/hr on west coast). Highs 15-17 C.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy intervals, some fog or mist developing, lows 5-7 C except for some scattered colder and possibly frosty conditions in valleys in the inland southeast.

MONDAY ... Variable cloud, a few showers becoming longer intervals of rain by afternoon and evening, rather windy in the northern counties (SW 50-80 km/hr), breezy further south, afternoon highs 14 to 18 C with warmest readings inland south.

WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY will see dry, settled weather with some cloud that may be persistent in parts of the north, but a good chance of sunshine further south, and rather warm inland over parts of the south and central counties. There will also be some cooling sea breezes mainly on west-facing coasts and parts of the south coast. The east coast should escape sea breeze cooling except possibly within a short distance of the sea front. Highs both days could reach 17 to 20 C in sunshine, but would be held to about 13 to 16 C under cloud or in sea breezes. Both mornings will be cold enough for scattered frost in some inland valleys, and otherwise lows of about 2 to 6 C. Winds will be generally light and variable although tending to westerly 20-40 km/hr across parts of the north.

FRIDAY may continue about the same but with stronger sea breezes likely on the east coast as the wind gradient becomes slack enough to permit an east wind to develop. So in that case Friday may be warmer in some western counties than the previous two days, and cooler in the east.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Turning colder in stages, largely dry and with some sunshine both days, as winds turn first to northwest then later to northeast. Highs about 14 C Saturday and 9-11 C Sunday. Increasing risk of frost by Monday as considerably colder conditions develop. This cold spell may be broken briefly later in the week then resume for a few days. Too early to speculate on the Easter weekend in this rather uncertain pattern.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with a few brief brighter intervals, low cloud hanging onto the nearby slopes, and not overly warm at about 10 C. The spring here continues to be very backward compared to most years, and blooming is at a very early stage similar to what we had in late February last year.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Variable cloud eastern counties with a few showers by mid-day, overcast in the west with longer intervals of rain ending by late afternoon or evening, 5-15 mm likely in west, 3-7 mm east. Becoming rather windy in western and northern counties (SW 50-80 km/hr), breezy further east (SW 40-60 km/hr), afternoon highs 13 to 16 C with warmest readings inland southeast

TONIGHT ... Rain gradually ending over west, partial clearing by morning, winds veering to westerly 40-60 km/hr. Rain rather intermittent over east will gradually fragment to a few light showers. Lows 5-8 C.

TUESDAY ... Morning showers and gusty winds will tend to ease quite early on for most, persisting in parts of north Connacht and west Ulster to mid-day. Gradual clearing is likely across the south with some pleasantly warm temperatures developing there. Morning lows will be 5-7 C and afternoon highs will range from about 16 C in the inland south to 12 C in the north. Sunshine may be rather infrequent in the north but some parts of the south should do quite well.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY will continue about the same but with stronger sea breezes likely on the east coast as the wind gradient becomes slack enough to permit an east wind to develop. So in that case Friday and Saturday may be warmer in some western counties than the previous two days, and cooler in the east, at least very close to the coast. Highs will range from 13-16 C in north and east to 17-20 C in south and west (except for a few outer coastal locations which may stay closer to 14 degrees.)

The further outlook has changed a bit for the better with less indication of cooling before about Tuesday of next week now. The warm spell may continue through Sunday with slowly increasing west to northwest breezes and clouds encroaching on the northern third of the country. This will bring temperatures back down to low teens in the north but it may stay 15-18 C in the south until a front and unsettled weather move in around Tuesday. There will be several days of considerably cooler weather in a northerly to northeasterly flow just before Easter; confidence becomes very low on what happens after this colder turn (which in itself is not really nailed down yet).

So in general, I'm thinking it will be a reasonable dry spell for the north and east this coming week, once today's front has moved past, and quite a pleasant warm and dry spell in the south and parts of the west.

My local weather on Sunday was cool but sunny with a lot of cloud banked up against the mountains to the north of us, and the appearance of snow falling above 1200 metres; the high closer to sea level was about 8 or 9 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with sunny breaks developing mostly in central counties from about Clare to Meath, probably more cloud to both south and north of that zone until afternoon, then some breaks developing in most other counties as well. Temperatures will respond to any sunshine so expect readings around 12-14 C under cloud but 14-17 C where sun breaks through. Winds generally light to moderate westerly except moderate to strong westerly near north coasts where some passing showers are still possible. The southwest may see some "virga" at times this morning as a very weak upper air disturbance drifts overhead; moisture is limited with this feature but rain could try to fall through dry layers closer to the ground, the result is called "virga."

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with some clear intervals mainly inland south and central counties, lows and temperatures in general will respond mainly to clear or cloudy skies more than varying region to region, and there will be local frost under any clear patches (lows 1-4 C) while readings will tend to stay around 5-8 C under cloud.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, pleasantly mild for most, highs 14-17 C. There could be some low cloud near some northwestern coastal counties with patchy drizzle but hopefully this will remain offshore. Light winds will allow local sea breezes which will tend to keep temperatures closer to 14, but parts of the inland south and central counties could have enough sunshine to allow warmer readings of at least 17 C.

THURSDAY ... After another partly cloudy night with local frost under clear patches, morning lows 2-5 C for most, the day will be a mixture of cloud and sunshine with local sea breezes cooling coastal locations (12-15 C) but some inland areas warming to the 17-19 C range.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals, local sea breeze cooling but generally quite warm especially inland west, morning lows
    3-7 C and highs 15-20 C.

SATURDAY ... Increasing cloud, some light rain or drizzle near west coast but not making much if any progress inland, warm away from coastal sea breezes, highs near 18 C.

SUNDAY ... Overcast, rain may become rather widespread with 5-15 mm potential, highs 14-17 C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Turning colder in stages, quite chilly by mid-week in a northwest wind and passing showers, highs 9-12 C. Still a bit uncertain about the prospects for the Easter weekend, probably similar to the past two days in general with bands of showery rain and near normal temperatures.

My local weather on Monday was partly cloudy with fairly generous sunshine by afternoon but rather cool too, highs near 10 C.

(note: could be some interesting cloudscapes over some hilly terrain today, cameras ready)

Wednesday, 5 April, 2017 __ Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy this morning with sunshine developing in parts of the south, highs 14-17 C ... overcast most of the day further north, some clearing late in the day, highs 12-15 C.

TONIGHT ... Some clear intervals in the south, lows 2-5 C. Overcast further north, lows 5-7 C.

THURSDAY ... Rather cloudy away from the south coast to start, then partial clearing to a mixture of cloud and sunshine with local sea breezes cooling coastal locations (12-15 C) but some inland areas warming to the 15-18 C range.

FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals, local sea breeze cooling but generally quite warm especially inland west, morning lows 3-7 C and highs 15-20 C.

SATURDAY ... Increasing cloud west, sunshine at times further east, rather warm, southerly breezes and some coastal sea breezes likely, highs 15 to 18 C.

SUNDAY ... Overcast, showers or intervals of light rain, a few breaks in the cloud at times, breezy, winds SW to W 40-60 km/hr, highs 13-16 C.

OUTLOOK ... Rather cloudy most of the week, a few showers at times, and temperatures fairly close to average. A cooler, unsettled theme may develop towards the Easter weekend, fingers crossed that this outlook will change for the better as there's enough time for that to happen.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast and chilly with light rain by this evening, highs were only about 8 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Stubborn cloud may begin to break in a few parts of the south and west by mid-day, and the only breeze will be some type of sea breeze as the centre of high pressure is now overhead. High temperatures will range from 12 or 13 C under cloud to 15 or 16 C with sunshine.

TONIGHT ... A few more clear patches will perhaps lead to fog and/or frost in some inland valleys with lows 1 to 4 C. Cloud over parts of the north and east will keep lows up around 7 C.

FRIDAY and SATURDAY will both bring more sunshine each day, until at some point skies should be just about perfectly clear. This will increase the temperature range with morning lows falling to about 2 to 6 C in most places, but afternoon highs could reach 17 or 18 C with some local sea breeze cooling to 14 C. If any cloud remains, temperatures will be held down to about 14 C also. But it appears likely that sunshine will begin to dominate by Friday and should be quite widespread on Saturday. Light winds on Friday and southerly breezes 20-40 km/hr on Saturday.

SUNDAY will see variable amounts of cloud from an advancing weak frontal system with 3-7 mm rainfall potential from passing showers. Winds will pick up to westerly 40-60 km/hr with some stronger gusts possible in exposed coastal locations. Morning lows of 10 C and afternoon highs near 14 C.

MONDAY will bring variable high cloud and a few isolated showers, highs near 13 C.

OUTLOOK for next week is for mostly cloudy weather with passing showers on a few occasions, near normal temperatures (highs 13-15 C), then by Easter weekend it still looks rather unsettled and winds could pick up further from west to northwest with temperatures possibly falling off to highs near 10 C. However, guidance is showing a split in opinion on the Easter outlook and there are some suggestions of a more settled outcome with slightly milder temperatures.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with some light rain, and highs of about 10 C. Widespread severe storms rumbled through the eastern U.S., to be followed by breezy and cooler weather for a couple of days (at the Masters golf tournament, expect strong wind gusts and highs near 17 C). The weekend will see much improved conditions there (sunshine, highs near 24 C).

    Friday, 7 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloud will be rather stubborn in parts of the north and east but sunshine should begin to develop in at least the south and some parts of the west by late morning or early afternoon. Highs will reach about 16 C where the sun breaks through, and will remain in the 11-13 C range under any lingering cloud. Very light wind gradients will allow local sea breezes and even some sea fog to make inroads in a few parts of the east and south coastal districts.

TONIGHT ... Clearing except for some coastal fog, inland fog patches may develop towards morning as well as local frost in valleys. Lows 1-4 C for most in the south and inland central counties, a few places under cloud will remain milder at 7-8 C.

SATURDAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals for some, and sea fog possible near east coast and outer south coast. Warmer for most, highs 14-17 C and perhaps a bit higher well inland. Highs held down to about 11-14 C in some sea breeze zones.

SUNDAY ... Cloudy with a few breaks, passing showers, winds increasing to westerly then northwesterly 40-60 km/hr, and feeling cooler, morning lows 8-10 C and afternoon highs 13-15 C.

MONDAY ... Partly to mostly cloudy, cool. Morning lows 2-5 C and afternoon highs about 10 C.

TUESDAY ... Overcast with a few breaks possible, light rain near north coast, lows 3 to 7 C and highs 8 to 12 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Variable cloud, a few showers near north and west facing hills, cool with highs 8-11 C.

THURSDAY and (Good) FRIDAY at this point are looking partly cloudy and cool with morning frosts possible and afternoon highs near 10 to 13 C.

The rest of the EASTER WEEKEND is looking rather unsettled with temperatures around 13 or 14 C.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast with a few brief sunny intervals, and a few sprinkles of rain at times, cool with highs near 9 C. The severe weather in the eastern states has backed off to a steady rain now, moving into New England, and strong winds are flooding south behind that low, with improvements likely for the weekend in a rapid warming trend to follow one colder day.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny and warmer for many today, although cloud may hold in a few parts of the northwest and Ulster. There could also be some low cloud or sea fog drifting into a few parts of the south coast. Highs will reach 16 to 19 C in the areas enjoying sunshine, but will be held to 12 to 15 C under any lingering cloud or in persistent sea breezes.

TONIGHT ... Increasing cloud, mild, showers in parts of north Connacht and west Ulster before sunrise. Lows 8-10 C.

SUNDAY ... Variable cloud, showers across parts of the north (2-5 mm) and just isolated brief showers in the south where some parts may remain dry. Highs will reach about 15 C before temperatures begin to drop off (12 C northwest as this colder air will arrive in the morning there). Winds will be stronger although not much more than 30-50 km/hr.

MONDAY to WEDNESDAY will bring mostly cloudy, cool and dry weather for most, although there could be brief passing showers in the north at times. Any sunshine will probably be brief but the inland south could see some each day. Highs will be in the 10-13 C range, morning lows 2-6 C.

THURSDAY will become a little milder with the threat of some light rain, highs in the 12-15 C range.

The EASTER WEEKEND is looking cool, unsettled at times, although not overly wet, and breezy to windy at times, with a west to northwest flow developing. Highs will most likely be in the 10-13 C range.

My local weather was overcast with strong southerly winds during the afternoon that gusted to about 80 km/hr locally, and the high was 14 C. If you're watching the Masters, you'll see nothing but blue skies and sunshine there all weekend, highs will be 21 C Saturday, and 24 C Sunday.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy except for some morning sunny breaks in a few parts of the south and southeast. Turning cooler from northwest to southeast during the morning hours (early afternoon at latest for southeast). Some showers will move across north Connacht and Ulster (3-7 mm), only isolated sprinkles of rain are expected further south. Highs 12-14 C north and west-central counties, 14-17 C south and east. Winds increasing a little to westerly veering northwest 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Variable cloudiness, showers becoming a light drizzly rain in parts of the north, mostly dry further south, lows 4-7 C.

MONDAY ... Mostly cloudy, cool, some light rain at times in Ulster, north Leinster, inland Connacht. Winds northwest 30-50 km/hr. Highs 9-12 C.

TUESDAY ... Variable cloud, some sunshine possible in south, a little warmer after a chilly start, lows 1-4 C and highs 12-15 C. Moderate westerly winds in exposed parts of the north.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few showers (2-5 mm at most), cold. Morning lows about 4 C and afternoon highs 8-11 C.

THURSDAY ... Slightly warmer again, with partly cloudy skies, rain by late in the day. Lows 3-5 C and highs 10-13 C.

OUTLOOK ... The Easter weekend will become quite chilly in north to northeast winds, and some outbreaks of sleety rain. Highs may only reach 8-10 C and there could be slight frosts at night. This cold spell may last a few days past Easter Sunday but the trend will then be back to warmer weather by about the 20th.

My local weather on Saturday was overcast with light rain and highs near 11 C. Much warmer weather is developing for the eastern half of North America and some places that were quite cold on Saturday will be close to 21 C (70 F) by Monday.

    Monday, 10 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly to mostly cloudy, cool, some light rain at times in Ulster, north Leinster, inland Connacht, but amounts only 1-3 mm. Winds northwest 30-50 km/hr will add some chill to highs of 9 to 12 C, the higher readings near the south coast.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with some clear intervals, cold. Lows 1-4 C. Some local frost is possible in a few inland valleys.

TUESDAY ... Variable cloud, some sunshine possible in south, a little warmer after a chilly start, with highs 12-15 C. Moderate westerly winds in exposed parts of the north.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few showers (2-5 mm at most), cold. Morning lows about 2 to 4 C and afternoon highs 8-11 C. The milder readings will be near the south coast, otherwise it will be a colder day for most other counties.

THURSDAY ... Slightly warmer again, with partly cloudy skies, rain by late in the day. Lows 3-5 C and highs 10-13 C.

GOOD FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy, cool, slight chance of showers. Lows 1-4 C and highs about 11 or 12 C.

OUTLOOK ... The colder spell expected for Easter may now be delayed into the following week, although it will remain relatively cool from Saturday 15th to Monday 17th, highs generally 10-12 C, and slight frosts possible at night, in partly cloudy to overcast but mainly dry weather.

My local weather on Sunday featured mostly cloudy skies but there were a few sunny breaks. It was quite chilly with highs near 9 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

Astronomy note: Full moon has just occurred (at 0709 IST) but the moon will appear full again tonight.

TODAY ... Variable cloud, some sunshine possible in south, a little warmer after a chilly start, with highs 13-15 C for most, and potential for 16 or 17 in a few parts of the south if the sun co-operates. Moderate westerly winds in exposed parts of the north where readings will generally be 12-14 C.

TONIGHT ... A few light showers may develop across the north, with partly cloudy skies further south, lows reaching about 6 C under cloud and 2-4 C where any clear patches remain.

WEDNESDAY ... Partly cloudy, a few showers (2-5 mm at most), cold. Morning lows about 2 to 4 C and afternoon highs 9-13 C. The milder readings will be near the south coast, otherwise it will be a colder day for most other counties.

THURSDAY ... Slightly warmer again, with partly cloudy skies, rain by late in the day. Lows 3-5 C and highs 11-15 C.

GOOD FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy, cool, slight chance of showers. Lows 1-4 C and highs about 12 or 13 C.

OUTLOOK ... Rather bland weather is now expected for most of the Easter weekend, partly cloudy with highs 12-15 C, chilly at night (2-5 C), and the colder spell continues to be delayed into the following week, when it appears likely that temperatures may be held near or even below 10 C in the daytime, and with slight frosts possible at night. The Easter weekend is also looking relatively dry, with any showers brief and not producing very much measurable rainfall. The colder spell next week may produce heavier showers at times and some of those could even be mixed and wintry on high ground at least. A somewhat warmer spell will follow, this cold intrusion is not expected to last more than about three days.

My local weather on Monday was cloudy with a few brighter intervals, and mostly dry with a few passing showers, even a thunderstorm for a few places near here (not at my location though).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, with a few breaks developing in parts of the north, and rather cold, with a few light showers (2-5 mm amounts). Highs 9-11 C in the north, and 11-13 C south. Moderate west to northwest winds 30-50 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear intervals developing, showers ending, lows around 4 C on average, possibly colder where skies clear for any length of time.

THURSDAY ... Variable cloud, a little sunshine in the mix, and not as cold, with highs 12-15 C.

GOOD FRIDAY ... Showers pushing south, colder again, as winds veer back to northwest, morning lows 4-6 C and afternoon highs 10-13 C.

OUTLOOK for EASTER WEEKEND and BEYOND ... Not much change is expected in this rather cool but bland weather pattern, both Saturday and Sunday are looking partly cloudy and rather cool with highs 11-14 C, morning lows both days 2-5 C. Temperatures will continue in that range to mid-week; there is still a chance of considerably colder air arriving during the week, although some guidance is downplaying this slightly, showing the coldest air heading a bit further east into Scotland and northern England instead. This may not be resolved until the weekend.

My local weather was sunny for a change, and this brought temperatures up to about 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, a few light showers developing mainly in the southwest this afternoon, but amounts only 1-3 mm. Highs 11-13 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, a few intervals of light rain or drizzle, lows 5-8 C.

GOOD FRIDAY ... Variable cloud, cool, showers possible but amounts slight (1-3 mm), highs 10-12 C.

HOLY SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, morning lows 3-5 C and highs 10-13 C.

EASTER SUNDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, slight chance of showers developing across Ulster, morning lows 2-5 C and highs 11-14 C.

MONDAY ... Occasional showers, turning slightly colder, temperatures steady in the range of 9 to 11 C.

OUTLOOK ... Rather cold mid-week, with chance of slight frosts inland, highs only around 10 C. There may be more sunshine than in this current spell, however. This cool, dry spell could last for about a week with slight variations, and perhaps a bit warmer at times at least in western counties, but no real change of air mass is indicated, and when it turns cooler in Ireland, it will turn very chilly in Britain and nearby parts of western/central Europe; some parts of the continent could have a few flurries in the mix but it looks likely to remain quite dry in Ireland and western parts of Britain closer to high pressure. Eventually that high rebuilds further west and allows a more variable regime to begin, but nothing overly warm is indicated to near the end of the month, would expect a lot of days with highs in the 10-15 C range for the rest of April.

My local weather on Wednesday was wet until mid-afternoon, then the rain ended and some sunny breaks developed, with highs near 13 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy with a few brighter intervals, cool, showers or drizzly light rain at times, but amounts slight (1-3 mm), highs 10-12 C.

TONIGHT ... Mostly cloudy, occasional light rain or drizzle, cold. Lows 4-6 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy, showers more isolated and some places dry all day, with light winds and highs 10-13 C.

EASTER SUNDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, slight chance of showers developing across Ulster, morning lows south and central 2-5 C, north 5-7 C, and highs 11-14 C, warmest inland south.

MONDAY ... Occasional showers, turning slightly colder, temperatures steady in the range of 9 to 12 C.

TUESDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, isolated showers most likely in east Ulster and north Leinster, cool for mid-April, morning lows -1 to +3 C and highs 8-11 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny intervals, morning frost, cool. Lows -2 to +3 C and highs about 10 C. (note that this cool spell will be even colder in parts of Britain and central Europe where sharp frosts are likely)

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Little change, although it could become slightly warmer in the west, under nearly stagnant high pressure, some sunshine likely each day but some lingering cloud too, morning frosts inland, highs 10-13 C. It looks like a very slow breakdown of this blocking pattern with somewhat warmer but unsettled weather likely to follow in about another week.

My local weather on Thursday was overcast but dry, with highs near 12 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, light drizzly rain at times in the south this morning, then some brief sunny breaks possible, followed by a second weak frontal band of light rain across most of the country by afternoon. Rainfall amounts slight (1-3 mm) and highs 11-14 C.

TONIGHT ... Overcast, mist, drizzle and fog patches, lows 7-9 C.

EASTER SUNDAY ... Mostly cloudy, a few outbreaks of drizzle or light rain, 1-3 mm amounts, highs 11-14 C. Moderate west to northwest breezes developing in the afternoon 40-60 km/hr.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, most likely in east Ulster and north Leinster, as winds turn more northerly, morning lows near 4 C and afternoon highs near 10 C.

TUESDAY ... Some longer sunny intervals likely, although still some cloud around, light northeast winds making it quite chilly near east coast, morning lows -2 to +3 C with chance of frost, afternoon highs 9 to 13 C, mildest in southwest.

WEDNESDAY to FRIDAY ... Sunny intervals each day, chance of light frosts inland, lows -2 to +3 C and highs 10 to 14 C, warmest inland west, winds generally rather light. Occasionally there may be more cloud near north coast and light rain could develop there, but otherwise it should be a generally dry interval.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Somewhat milder by next weekend, then back to a rather cold and unsettled pattern, with more drizzle or light rain. The month will probably turn out quite dry but with these frequent light rain events, soil moisture may remain close to normal values in some areas.

Meanwhile, my local weather on Good Friday was reasonably pleasant with a few sunny breaks in a mostly cloudy pattern, highs near 14 C. Light rain at times for Saturday. We now have some signs of spring blooming but the season remains very backward compared to most.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, a few outbreaks of drizzle or light rain, 1-3 mm amounts, highs 11-14 C. A few sunny intervals may occur near the south coast, and elsewhere it could brighten a little by afternoon. Moderate west to northwest breezes developing in the afternoon 40-60 km/hr.

TONIGHT ... A few showers, partly to mostly cloudy, lows 4-7 C.

MONDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, most likely in east Ulster and north Leinster, as winds turn more northerly, with afternoon highs near 10 C for the east and central counties, about 12 C west and south.

Somewhat milder by Saturday of next weekend, then back to a rather cold and unsettled pattern, with more drizzle or light rain. The month will probably turn out quite dry but with these frequent light rain events, soil moisture may remain close to normal values in some areas.

My local weather was quite variable around the region, featuring some heavy showers over my head and sunshine elsewhere, highs near 14 C.

    Monday, 17 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Partly cloudy, the best sunshine likely to be in parts of Connacht, inland Munster and inland parts of Leinster, light winds but a general shift to a northerly or northeast direction, and rather cool especially where it stays cloudy, highs from 11 to 15 C. A few brief and isolated showers most likely in east Ulster, north Leinster and near south coast.

TONIGHT ... Variable cloud, some longer clear intervals may allow some light frost to develop in central counties, lows generally 2 to 6 C.

TUESDAY ... Cloudy with sunny intervals, light winds, highs 11 to 15 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Overcast in north with a few light showers, partly cloudy central and south, morning lows 2 to 6 C and afternoon highs 12 to 16 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY will continue partly cloudy, mostly dry with slight frosts possible inland, highs 12 to 16 C.

OUTLOOK from SATURDAY to middle of following week is for somewhat cooler temperatures as a stronger northerly flow develops, due to the high pressure block shifting further west into the Atlantic. This may just revert to more bland and seasonable weather later in that week as the high returns closer to Ireland.

My local weather on Easter Sunday was mostly cloudy but a little warmer than recent days with highs in the 15-18 C range locally.

    Tuesday, 18 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy in the north with a few outbreaks of light rain (only 1-3 mm is expected), partly cloudy central and south, and sunny at times, with light winds. Highs 12 to 16 C, warmest inland south, coolest near east coast and north.

TONIGHT ... Occasional drizzle or light rain in north, becoming more cloudy in the south but still clear enough near south coast to allow some frost inland south, lows will vary from 4-7 C north, to 1-4 C south (although milder near some coasts).

WEDNESDAY will feature a little more cloud in general with the light rain making some further progress south before fragmenting and dying out during the afternoon and evening. Still a bit of sunshine in the mix for the south. Highs 11-15 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY are expected to bring partly cloudy to sunny conditions, some fog or frost possible overnight into the early morning hours, lows -1 to +4 C and highs 11 to 15 C.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK ... Turning slightly colder with winds picking up from the northwest to north, isolated showers but some sunshine also, highs near 11 C.

NEXT WEEK is looking quite cold, some guidance says it will be cold enough for any showers to become wintry at times. This sort of 7-10 day outlook often moderates slightly closer to the time, but a lot of very cold air has been moving south over continental Europe so it would only take a slight westward shift of the upper level pattern to include Ireland in this colder scenario. At any rate, temperatures seem very likely to be at least 2-3 degrees below average next week, and highs could be near or below 10 C. There will also be some frosts on most nights.

My local weather on Monday was overcast and mild, with just a little light rain by late afternoon, highs near 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... A mixture of hazy sunshine and cloudy intervals, slight risk of light showery rain near north coast, otherwise dry. Highs 13-16 C.

TONIGHT ... Some clear intervals and isolated frost, fog by early morning hours, lows 2-6 C for most.

THURSDAY to SATURDAY will continue in a similar pattern with some sunshine each day, cloudy intervals, and highs 12 to 15 C, overnight lows continuing rather cold in the 2-5 C range for most.

SUNDAY will turn somewhat colder in the daytime with more cloud and isolated showers, as winds increase and turn northwesterly 40-60 km/hr, lows 3-7 C and highs 10-13 C.

NEXT WEEK is looking very cool for late April, highs may be only 7 to 10 C, and overnight lows could be cold enough for significant frosts especially inland, with lows -2 to +3 C. Some wintry showers may develop in a few places but this cold spell looks mainly dry and there could be some sunshine each day.

The cold will begin to ease around the end of the month and it may then become considerably warmer around the first of May with highs recovering to the 15-18 C range.

My local weather on Tuesday was overcast with occasional light rain and highs around 13 C.

    Thursday, 20 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rather cloudy except for some sunny breaks across parts of Munster and south Leinster. Patchy drizzle this morning may not last too long, but there will be a slight chance of brief showers in cloudy areas of the central and northern counties. Highs 13-15 C in the south and 11-13 C elsewhere.

TONIGHT ... Mostly overcast, a few clear spells in the south. Lows will vary from about 5 C in the south to 8 C in the north.

    FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy, highs 13-15 C.

SATURDAY ... Intervals of cloud and sunshine, morning lows 4-8 C and afternoon highs 12-15 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, winds freshening somewhat to northwest 30-50 km/hr. Highs 10-13 C.

MONDAY to WEDNESDAY are likely to bring very cool and breezy weather, with sunny spells likely, but isolated mixed wintry showers possible, especially over the north and east coasts, and parts of Mayo. Highs will only reach 7 to 9 in most places, and overnight lows could be near or below the freezing point with significant frosts possible.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for a slow return to more normal temperatures and eventually quite warm by the first few days of May, so that the last weekend in April should be transitional (around 13-15 C) but possibly with some rain at times as frontal systems from the Atlantic push this colder air back to the subarctic regions. It could then be as warm as 18 C by the first few days of May.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with a few showers, and rather cool with highs near 11 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy except for some sunny spells in Munster, light winds, highs reaching 15-17 C in the southwest and 13-15 C elsewhere.

TONIGHT ... Cloudy with a few clear spells in the south where lows will reach 4-7 C, otherwise about 8 C.

SATURDAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny breaks, isolated showers developing in the north, highs 13-16 C.

SUNDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, lows 5-8 C and highs 12-15 C.

MONDAY and TUESDAY will turn very cool for late April, highs only 7-9 C and lows in the range of -2 to +3 C. There will be moderate to strong northerly winds adding chill, and bands of showers that could turn wintry especially at night, and over higher terrain.

WEDNESDAY will continue quite cold with fewer showers and longer intervals of sunshine, morning frosts, lows near -3 C inland, and highs 8-10 C.

OUTLOOK ... Gradually temperatures will return to late April seasonal averages of about 14-17 C by the weekend and could get even warmer for a few days in early May. This transition will involve some rain at times, ending the long dry spell although perhaps not returning totals to monthly averages.

My local weather on Thursday improved from heavy showers during the morning to sunshine in the afternoon, highs near 14 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy, with just a few brighter intervals in parts of the south and midlands, drizzle or light rain may develop by afternoon in some parts of Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster. Highs 12-15 C (possibly 17 C where sunshine breaks through around west Munster).

TONIGHT ... Overcast, drizzle, or light rain spreading south, but some parts of the south remaining dry. Lows 5-8 C.

SUNDAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny breaks, passing showers developing in a stronger west to northwest wind of 40-60 km/hr. Highs 12 to 15 C.

MONDAY ... Breezy and turning quite cold with northwest to north winds 40-60 km/hr, partly cloudy with a few bands of wintry showers feeding into Ulster and Leinster from the north, and isolated wintry showers in parts of Connacht and west Munster. Morning lows 1-4 C and highs 7-10 C.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, unseasonably cold, wintry showers with falls of snow on some hills (especially those in Connacht and Ulster), morning lows -2 to +3 C and highs only 5 to 8 C. Moderate northerly winds at times adding more chill.

WEDNESDAY ... Sharp morning frosts likely with lows -3 to +2 C, then partly cloudy to overcast with winds backing to westerly, a few more isolated showers but less wintry as temperatures moderate slowly to around 10 C.

THURSDAY ... Mostly cloudy, a few showers in southwest to west winds, cool but less chance of frost (except possibly in clear spots inland south), highs about 11 C.

FRIDAY ... Overcast, rain at times, highs near 12 C.

OUTLOOK ... Turning warmer in stages over the last weekend of April and into the first week of May, temperatures may peak around 18-20 C at some point around Tuesday 2nd of May.

My local weather on Friday was excellent for a change, sunshine all day long and highs near 18 C. Naturally this won't last very long as cloud spreads in on Saturday followed by rain.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Becoming windy and turning colder before levelling off at about 6 C across the north, with temperatures steady at current values of 8-10 C in the south before a slight downward trend this afternoon. Winds increasing to NNW 40-60 km/hr. A few light showers at first with some sunny breaks this morning, then more widespread showers becoming wintry over many parts of Ulster, north Connacht and north Leinster, as well as higher elevations further south.

TONIGHT ... Some further wintry showers and sleety rain in parts of the north and west, just isolated wintry showers in east and south with some clear intervals, lows between -1 and +3 C, and feeling very cold in brisk northerly winds 50-70 km/hr in some exposed locations.

TUESDAY ... Unseasonably cold with scattered wintry showers, some sunny breaks, and moderate northerly winds 40-60 km/hr. Highs only 5 to 8 C for most.

TUESDAY NIGHT... Continued very cold with some clear intervals and a widespread sharp frost likely, lows reaching -3 or even -4 in parts of the inland south, southeast and midlands. The northerly flow will continue to some extent and this will prevent frost in some western counties where lows will reach 2-4 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Some morning sunshine, cold, but increasing cloud later in the day with outbreaks of light rain, highs 7-10 C.

THURSDAY ... Sunny with cloudy intervals, just a few isolated showers possible and quite a few places may remain dry, morning lows -2 to +3 C and highs 8 to 12 C.

FRIDAY ... Partly cloudy to overcast, a few showers developing, lows near 3 C and highs near 12 C.

SATURDAY ... Breezy with showers turning to a steady rain, rather chilly in a moderate south to southwest wind 50-70 km/hr, highs 12-14 C.

SUNDAY ... Variable cloud, passing showers, breezy (west 40-60 km/hr), highs around 10 C.

OUTLOOK ... Considerably warmer weather is likely to spread in from the southeast in the first week of May, and highs may reach 18-20 C.

My local weather on Sunday was mostly cloudy with a few spits of rain but essentially a dry day most of the time, highs near 14 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Unseasonably cold, some sunny breaks, but rather widespread wintry showers developing, heaviest in Connacht and Ulster, some snow possible although hail, thunder and sleet more likely, and moderate northerly winds 40-60 km/hr. Highs only 5 to 8 C for most.

TONIGHT... Continued very cold with some clear intervals and a widespread sharp frost likely, as wintry showers become more confined to higher parts of the northwest, lows reaching -3 or even -4 in parts of the inland south, southeast and midlands with a sharp frost in sheltered locations. The northerly flow will continue to some extent and this will prevent frost in some western counties where lows will only dip to about 2-4 C.

SUNDAY ... Variable cloud, cold, passing showers, breezy (west 40-60 km/hr), highs around 9 or 10 C.

OUTLOOK ... Considerably warmer weather is likely to spread in from the south in the first week of May, and highs may reach 18-20 C.

My local weather on Monday was partly cloudy in the morning, sunny by afternoon, with highs of about 13 C.

    Wednesday, 26 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals with some isolated showers, rather wintry on hills in parts of Connacht and possibly around Wicklow, but most places will likely avoid these and have a dry if quite cool day with moderate north to northwest winds at 40 to 60 km/hr, highs 8 to 11 C (warmest near south coast).

TONIGHT ... Some clear intervals with patchy frost in the inland south, mostly cloudy further north, cold with lows between -2 and +4 C (mildest in west and north).

THURSDAY ... Partly cloudy, isolated showers, still rather cool but not as breezy, highs about 10 C.

FRIDAY ... Intervals of cloud and sunshine, some more persistent cloud near Atlantic coasts with rain at times by evening there, morning lows -2 to +3 C and highs about 11 C.

SATURDAY ... Some sunny breaks in north and east, mostly overcast for south and west with rain edging into parts of Munster. Lows 3-6 C and highs 10-13 C. Moderate southeast winds will develop during the day.

SUNDAY ... Periods of rain and misty or foggy on hills, raw east winds in parts of the north and Leinster, veering to westerly across the south with partial clearing by late in the day. Temperatures steady 8-10 C so rather raw for the last day of April.

MONDAY ... Intervals of cloud and sun, a few passing showers and turning warmer in southerly breezes, highs near 15 C.

OUTLOOK ... A few warmer days (perhaps Bank holidays should be mid-week?) and pleasant sunny intervals during the first week of May in a southeast flow off the continent, highs 18-21 C. This spell will perhaps last for a while except for some variations in temperatures as pulses of somewhat cooler air mix into the flow, and east coast likely to suffer from sea breeze cooling, but in general the weather will be considerably warmer than this week.

My local weather on Monday was overcast with a bit of rain at times, and highs near 12 C. Severe storms are developing in the Great Lakes region and may bring some tornadic storms to Illinois, Indiana and states between there and the Gulf of Mexico along a cold front that is making very slow progress east (not expected to reach Toronto for example until the weekend).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Mostly cloudy after a few morning sunny breaks in some southern counties, patchy light rain may develop across the north and west, highs 9-12 C.

    TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, lows 3-5 C.

FRIDAY ... Intervals of cloud and sunshine, isolated brief showers. Highs 9-12 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly cloudy with some sunny breaks in Ulster and Leinster, mostly cloudy in Connacht and Munster, rain may edge into Kerry by late afternoon or evening, and most of the south will have increasing southeast winds late in the day. Morning lows 4-7 C and afternoon highs 12-14 C.

SUNDAY ... Rain may be heavy and persistent in Munster during the early morning and then this rain will spread gradually northwards to cover the rest of the country during the day. Raw east winds 40-60 km/hr at times with the rain, and temperatures only about 9 or 10 C. Later in the day there could be some clearing in the south but this will not reach central regions until about midnight, and Ulster by Monday morning.

MONDAY ... Cloudy with some brighter intervals, rain clearing northeast from Ulster during the morning, another band of rain may arrive in the south later afternoon but this one will be weaker and beginning to break up at that point. Highs will reach about 15 C.

OUTLOOK ... Most of next week looks much improved with some sunshine each day, mostly dry, and warmer with highs 17-21 C except for some locally cooler readings near the east coast due to sea breezes in a generally southeasterly wind pattern. This warmer spell will probably see some fluctuations to cooler days but these may give way to warmth again.

My local weather on Wednesday was partly cloudy and the highs were about 14 C.

    Friday, 28 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny breaks developing, not much further light rain expected but some could redevelop later, highs 11 to 14 C.

TONIGHT ... Mostly cloudy, some patchy drizzle, lows 4 to 7 C.

SATURDAY ... Partly to mostly cloudy, the best of any sunshine in east and north, patchy light rain will develop near Atlantic coasts and may move somewhat further east during the afternoon, as winds freshen from the southeast to reach 40 to 60 km/hr. Highs 10-13 C.

SUNDAY ... Rain will become widespread during the early morning and will slowly move north, with 15-25 mm amounts likely (this will prevent April from being a very dry month although it won't bring totals up to normal values). Raw east winds during the rainfall and temperatures only 9-11 C. Some improvement may develop for parts of the southwest by afternoon and evening with highs reaching 14 C there but the foul weather appears likely to remain in place elsewhere.

MONDAY ... Rain pushing further northeast into Ulster and north Leinster before ending, clearing skies will follow with some cloudy intervals developing later, another less significant band of rain will push in later in the day to signal the arrival of warmer air, but the sunshine at times will boost temperatures to about 14 C.

TUESDAY to THURSDAY will be a warmer period with some sunshine each day and highs 16 to 19 C, possibly near 20 C in western counties, with southeast winds 30 to 50 km/hr, some local sea breeze cooling for the east coast keeping highs in the 12 to 15 C range.

FURTHER OUTLOOK calls for a cooler interval as winds turn more east to northeast around Friday and Saturday, with a few showers possible, then a gradual return to rather warm conditions by Sunday 7th of May.

My local weather on Thursday was partly cloudy with highs near 14 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Overcast with outbreaks of light rain or drizzle, but the heavier rain will hold off until tonight, amounts during the day will be 1-3 mm for most, and a few parts of east Ulster may remain dry. Winds will increase during the afternoon across the south, midlands and Connacht, to southeast 40-60 km/hr. Highs 12-14 C.

TONIGHT ... Rain, drizzle and fog will extend to most regions during the night, becoming heavier in west Munster with 10-20 mm likely there. Winds southeast backing to east 40-60 km/hr, lows 5-8 C.

SUNDAY ... Persistent rain will move slowly northeast and most places will get about 15-25 mm in total, but there will be some improvement by afternoon in parts of Munster. Winds easterly during the rainfall at 30-50 km/hr will switch to southwest 30-50 km/hr with the partial clearance. Highs 10-12 C except 12-14 C in parts of Munster.

MONDAY ... Rain will taper off to drizzle in the northeast, and most other places will have a partly cloudy spell with highs about 14 C. More light rain will arrive late in the day with a second frontal band but this one will be quite weak compared to the Sunday event.

TUESDAY ... Variable cloud with some sunny breaks, isolated showers ending, warmer with highs 17-19 C.

OUTLOOK ... Wednesday and Thursday will bring some reasonably warm sunny spells and highs could reach 17-20 C away from the cooler east coast in southeast winds. Somewhat cooler on Friday as a stronger east wind develops and a small pool of colder air (11-14 C) rotates around high pressure situated to the northeast of Ulster. Then warming back to the higher teens again for the weekend of 6-7 May, followed by a week of changeable and sometimes wet weather as the Atlantic resumes control of the weather.

My local weather on Friday started out rather cloudy but the sun broke through for the afternoon bringing temperatures up to about 16 C.

    Sunday, 30 April, 2017

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... A band of rain will drift further north from its current location (Clare to Waterford), but it likely won't pass much further north than central Galway to south Dublin. Some other areas of rain will develop further south during the afternoon but this main band will drop the heaviest amounts (15-25 mm), north Connacht, central to north Leinster and much of Ulster will get relatively small amounts of rain once it clouds over later this morning. Raw east winds will accompany the rain and keep temperatures rather chilly (10-12 C). Further south, any sunny breaks may allow a slightly warmer high of 12-14 C, and the same is true in Ulster.

Please note, while wind speeds on land will probably peak at about 50-70 km/hr, there could be a brief interval of 80-100 km/hr winds near Cork (especially around Roches Point) as part of a band of very strong winds offshore -- marine interests take note that gusts to 60 knots are possible around 20-70 nautical miles south of Bantry Bay to about central Waterford from now to mid-afternoon, peak gusts expected around noon.

TONIGHT any lingering rain will fragment to showers then drizzle, with fog patches and low cloud, low temperatures near 7 C.

MONDAY will see a bit of clearing with any leftover light rain becoming confined to coastal southeast, but some other weak bands may develop near other coasts, as Ireland remains wedged between the retreating low pressure over southern Britain and a broad but ill-defined trough containing warm fronts moving north. Highs will reach about 14 C generally, possibly a bit higher in the inland south.

TUESDAY to THURSDAY will be a warmer interval with sunshine each day at times, cloudy intervals, and lows around 8 C, highs 16 to 20 C except 12 to 16 near the east coast due to the southeasterly wind flow.

By FRIDAY and early SATURDAY it will turn a bit cooler in stronger east winds, and there could be some light rain or drizzle at times in the south, with highs 12 to 15 and lows around 6 C.

The outlook calls for somewhat warmer air to return but with increasing chances of rain turning heavier as we get further into May.

My local weather on Saturday started out dry but light rain arrived at mid-day and continued intermittently to the present time, and it was rather cool with highs around 13 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Cloudy with a few sunny breaks developing, isolated showers mainly near east coast then later approaching west coast and moving inland by late afternoon, although this band is weak and will tend to break apart quickly. A little warmer than recent days with highs 13 to 16 C.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, mist and shallow fog patches developing, lows 4-7 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will be pleasant, partly to mostly sunny days with light to moderate southeast winds, and highs of 16 to 20 C except somewhat cooler near east coast where 12 to 15 C.

THURSDAY will be partly cloudy and just about as warm with highs near 17 C.

FRIDAY will bring more cloudy intervals than sunshine and winds from the east will be a little stronger especially in Ulster and north Leinster where it may be a bit cooler at 12-15 C, but latest indications suggest the warmth of previous days may now continue further south especially in western counties, with highs 16-18 C. However, there is still some chance of isolated showers and these could be located near south coast, inland west Munster, and across parts of the north too.

The OUTLOOK for the weekend and beyond is for more of the same, as blocking is now set to continue for quite some time (meaning the computer models can't really precisely tell us when this fine spell might end). There could be a gradual breakdown as colder air approaches from the northeast, but here again, this colder turn may be more pronounced in Ulster as a frontal zone tries to remain in place across north-central counties. Eventually this sort of spell usually breaks down with a return to more unsettled Atlantic-dominated weather.

My local weather on Sunday was pleasant, a bit cool in the breeze but with some sunny intervals and cloud more extensive over the nearby mountains, with highs near 14 C. Severe storms have broken out across the central U.S. and will make slow progress east today as very warm air holds in place over parts of the eastern states but not as far north as the lower Great Lakes or most of New England. New York City will be near a frontal boundary and could see some thunderstorms.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with a few intervals of high cloud, warm except near some east and south facing coasts, with highs 17-21 C for most, held down to 13-16 C in sea breezes. Some thicker cloud bands near the Kerry peninsulas will gradually break up during the day but perhaps not before producing a brief shower locally.

TONIGHT ... Clear and mild with lows 5-8 C on average, a few valleys may drop a bit lower to about 2-3 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals, stronger east to southeast breezes will allow cooling sea breezes (12-14 C) to make larger incursions inland in Leinster and parts of Munster, but other regions will continue quite warm at about 16-19 C.

THURSDAY and FRIDAY ... Variable cloud in the south with risk of an isolated shower, partly cloudy to sunny at times further north, moderate east winds, morning lows about 7 to 9 C and afternoon highs 14 to 17 C.

OUTLOOK for NEXT WEEKEND ... So far it looks quite pleasant with a return to slightly warmer temperatures similar to today, and some sunshine both days.

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... The warm spell will probably begin to fade out gradually during the following week, perhaps in stages from northeast to southwest as slow-moving fronts gradually expel the warm dry air and introduce cloud and some light rain at times turning heavier as the fronts try to return northward later in the week. Winds will continue mostly east to northeast during this period.

My local weather on Monday (not a holiday here) was overcast, cool with some rain in the morning, highs only about 12 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny with a few cloudy intervals, some persistent fog or low cloud may develop near south coast, and onshore southeast winds of 30-50 km/hr will keep it rather cool (12-15 C) in coastal east, but further inland and in western counties it will be another pleasantly warm day with highs 17-19 C.

    TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, lows 4-7 C.

THURSDAY ... A mixture of cloud and sunshine, not quite as warm, in easterly winds of 40-60 km/hr, highs 14-17 C west and central, 11-14 C near south and east coasts, 12-15 C in Ulster.

FRIDAY ... Intervals of cloud and sun, morning lows 4-7 C and highs similar to Thursday at 14-17 C west, 12-14 C east. Some light rain may brush parts of coastal southwest by evening and overnight.

SATURDAY ... Rather cloudy in the southwest with a few light showers early in the day, otherwise, partly cloudy, highs 14-17 C but somewhat cooler near east coast.

SUNDAY and MONDAY ... Sunny intervals, a little warmer again, highs 17-20 C west, 12-15 C east and south coast, 13-17 C Ulster.

OUTLOOK ... The warm spell will gradually give way to more cloud and temperatures in the 13-16 C range by mid-week, after which there will be an increasing chance of rain and temperatures around 12-15 C.

My local weather on Tuesday was sunny with increasing high cloud, but eventually a light rainfall developed by evening, and it was a bit warmer as a result of the sunshine at about 15 C.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... A mixture of cloud and sunshine, not quite as warm, in easterly winds of 40-60 km/hr, highs 14-17 C west and central, 11-14 C near south and east coasts, 12-15 C in Ulster. There could be a few brief showers in parts of the north and east but only trace amounts.

TONIGHT ... Partly cloudy, breezy, lows 5-8 C.

FRIDAY ... Intervals of cloud and sun, highst 14-17 C west, 12-14 C east. Some light rain may brush parts of coastal southwest by evening and overnight. Winds east-southeast at about 40-60 km/hr may gust to 80 km/hr at times over higher terrain and near the south coast. It may feel cooler than the actual temperatures would suggest.

SATURDAY ... Rather cloudy in the southwest with a few light showers early in the day, otherwise, partly cloudy, highs 14-17 C but somewhat cooler near east coast. The strong and gusty east winds will gradually fade out of the picture during the afternoon.

SUNDAY and MONDAY ... Sunny intervals, a little warmer again, highs 17-20 C west, 12-15 C east and south coast, 13-17 C Ulster. Much less windy too, so it will probably feel a lot warmer except where sea breezes dominate.

OUTLOOK ... The rest of next week will see a gradual downturn in temperatures and an increase in cloud and the risk of measurable rainfall. Highs mid-week will settle in around 14 or 15 C, and the easterly wind component will be replaced by a more variable but generally southwesterly trend with local sea breezes from various directions. Much colder air will be trying to push in from the north and may brush parts of Ulster, but will then be forced to take a longer path around to the west of Ireland, which will moderate the chill.

My local weather on Wednesday was overcast with rain, drizzle and fog. It was gradually turning warmer in advance of very warm weather expected today, currently near 16 C.

It was close to 27 C in Portland and this warmth will push into most of western Canada for a couple of days but the coast will have only a brief warmup and then thunderstorms are expected (these are rare for my location, so I will be keeping a close watch).

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Sunny intervals, moderate east winds will make it rather cool in most of Leinster and east Ulster with highs 13-15 C, but warming gradually through the central counties towards the warmer west coast where highs may reach 18 C. Winds easterly at about 40-60 km/hr at times.

TONIGHT ... Clear intervals, except rather cloudy near south coast, slight chance of a brief interval of light rain there, but most places dry, lows 4-7 C.

SATURDAY ... Cloudy intervals during the morning, more sunshine by afternoon, perhaps slightly cooler in most regions, highs 12-14 C east to 13-16 C west, but winds diminishing during the mid-day and afternoon, so it may feel about the same temperature as recent days.

SUNDAY and MONDAY will be warmer days again with highs 17-20 C in the west and around 13-16 C east, good sunshine amounts for most on Sunday, a little more cloud possible Monday but still some sunny intervals. Morning lows both days 3-6 C.

TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY will see a mixture of cloud and sunshine and it will likely remain dry, with a very slight decrease in temperatures each day, highs around 17 C west and 13 C east.

By THURSDAY and FRIDAY of next week, there will be more cloud and some chance of rain although only light amounts are indicated. This trend may gradually turn to a wet spell further into the future but for the time being it appears that the long dry spell will continue with only slight interruptions. Temperatures will likely fall to slightly below average in this unsettled spell with highs 11-14 C.

My local weather on Thursday was summer-like with sunshine almost all day and highs near 26 C. We did get a brief thunderstorm and further east some heavy downpours but the storms were only severe south of the border in WA state and even there just a few tree limbs brought down and localized road flooding. We're expecting a return to more seasonable mid-teens and showery weather on Friday. Meanwhile, some parts of the Midwest are under flood warnings after 100 mm of rain fell across large parts of Illinois and Indiana on Thursday. This heavy rain had earlier created flood problems in Missouri and Iowa, and is now moving through Ontario, Ohio and New York state where about 50 mm rainfalls are expected.

    Forecasts for Ireland

TODAY ... Rather cloudy across the south this morning with a light rainfall brushing parts of south Kerry, but this will gradually clear from the northeast around mid-day. Further north it will be sunny with cloudy intervals, and moderate east to southeast winds that will gradually fade away to light northeast later today. Highs will range from 18 C in parts of the west and inland north, to 13 C on the east coast and in some parts of the coastal south.

TONIGHT ... Clear with a few cloudy intervals, lows 2-7 C.

SUNDAY ... Sunny with cloudy intervals, some more persistent cloud could spread across the Irish Sea but it seems likely to break up just before reaching Ireland, however we should keep a chance of cloudy intervals in the forecast for the east. Warmest inland north and west with highs near 20 C, closer to 15 C in much of Leinster and south coast of Munster. Not as windy as recent days so local sea breezes can develop on all coasts.

MONDAY ... Partly to mostly sunny, warm inland. Morning lows 2-7 C and highs 15-20 C.

TUESDAY ... Partly cloudy, not quite as warm, highs 13-17 C.

WEDNESDAY ... Cloudy with some sunny breaks, likely remaining dry although rain will be fairly close to the west coast, highs 12-16 C.

OUTLOOK ... Mostly cloudy later in the week with occasional light rain, not really a dry-spell or drought ending amount but possibly 5-15 mm in some parts. Heavier rain could follow but there are some suggestions of a return to warm, dry weather for a while, this time with more of a south to southwest wind regime.

My local weather on Friday was overcast with occasional light rain, and it was cooler although tolerable at 14 C. The persistent rain in the east has moved through the Midwest now and is slowly moving into Quebec and New England from the lower Great Lakes; widespread flooding problems are being reported as rainfall amounts have been quite heavy for several weeks.
