Did w5d2 today and it actually went quite well!had to stop for a second during the second 8min run because my hamstring had tightened up to the point where it was impossible to run. Passed a guy running in the opposite direction and he gave me "the nod". I'm offically in the club! :D

30 min run today! :D made friends with an insanely hyper puppy, he was running along behind me batting at my heels, then leaping into the river and back out and saturating me with river water. his owner was mortified when he found him 20 mins later but i thought it was hilarious.

w5d1 done woohoo :) noticed my breathing has improved a little too so am very impressed with myself!
am looking for opinions/advice, I want to finish week 5 by the end of the weekend so it looks like I will need to do 2 days in a row at some stage, was thinking of going out tomorrow to do day 2 and then doing d3 sat so as to give myself a break on friday. I'm thinking day 2 and 3 together would be tough on my legs!
Oh and might need to switch my training to mornings before work in a week or 2, any recommendations of what I could eat in the mornings for energy, I don't like porridge or bananas. Sorry for the long post!!!

    W1D1

Considering searching for JtH25K - Jabba the Hutt to 5k.

Am not overweight. Am near-totally sedentary, and have been for years. Asthmatic. Computer-based work for over a decade. Last regular gym attendance was... 9 years ago. Even when walking the dog I walk from the car to the edge of the lake and throw sticks for him while he runs himself ragged, then walk back to the car.

W1D1, couldn't finish session. Body, which hasn't as much as run for a bus in half a decade, traumatised.

    Oh well. Tomorrow: W1D1.

    Wednesday: W1D1.

    Thursday: W1D1.

    Friday's goal is W1D1 completed.

Then next week I'll start again with W1D1 and see if I can get as far as W1D2.

Hopelessly unfit body, I hope this is the last time you and I have this conversation. :D

Im on W1 too - did D1yesterday. Walking was grand, the running, well, probably it looked like a slow motion movie clip. :p I am thinking that if I am this sore after the 3 sessions of W1 then I might just repeat it.

Im so pathetic. I felt like the Rocky theme should have been playing when I neared home, such was the pride in doing a small walk.

W8D1 yesterday was great, really great. Even a bit of rain in there, too. A damn sight better than all of week 7, I'm blaming the crappy music for it.

    Only 5 runs left.

Started Week 7 of EI10k. Shockingly slow, I actually covered less distance than my previous run which was 5 minutes shorter!

Still, however slow, it was 45 minutes of nonstop running :D Never thought I'd see the day.

The dreaded w5d3 today, could only manage 12 mins before I had to take a walking break and do the 8mins after that. Not too disappointed because it could have been a lot worse!Think I was going too fast again. Will try again on Friday.

Ran 25 minutes this evening, longest run since Barcelona.

Those Compeed blister plasters are brilliant - and I found that getting a couple of pairs of proper running socks from a sports shop helped a lot, I haven't gotten any blisters at all since I started wearing them ... they're not cheap though!

I've just started couch to 5k again after a break due to tonsillitis
So happy to get going, decided to do week 2 again to start off.:D

Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of a stitch in your lower abdomen? I've gotten the one under the ribs before and those were easy enough to get rid of with some deep breaths but that didn't work for the one I had yesterday.

I've decided to take part in the Great Ethiopian Run for Orbis in November and the first step is getting up to 5k, literally from the couch.

The run is at 10,000 feet and I'm told that in order to be able to run 10k up there, I need to be able to run 15k down here!!

    Any-hoo, one thing at a time, 5k here I come!!! :)

Best of luck littlebook, you can do it :)

I haven't been running in a week - everything is still on pause until after this weekend. I'll get back to it then!

Well, after a bit of a hiccup, I finished week 1 and feel good about it. What's killing me is my pushups/core regime - it hurts to laugh! :(

A friend is running the Boston Marathon this weekend, and I'll probably go to cheer him on. I don't ever want to run a marathon (long term, I'd like to do a triathlon), but it's a huge event, and I think it will be inspiring to see it in person.

W4D2 done, much easier than day 1! Ran on a treadmill for the first time today, maybe that's easier than running on a footpath? Either way, I'm happy I finished it all without gasping for breath too much :)

    Hi everyone.

I am on the other couch to 5k thread and have stumbled on this one.

I did W5D1 a couple of days ago. Very apprehensive and nervous about Day 2 and Day 3.

Never exercised before in my life until November, when I started with very short walks and slowly increased it. And now I am doing this. Still very overweight but working on that also.

Just wondering for others who were in a similar position as me, how did you find going from 5 to 8 minutes? I think I could probably do that, well try it anyway.

BUT, how did you go from 8 minutes to 20 minutes???

    Any experiences/advice appreciated. :)

The most important thing is to relax. Take it easy and take it nice and slow. Don't think about stopping and keep your head up. Maybe pick somewhere nice to do it (somewhere that's not your usual route) - a local park would be ideal.

Thanks. Yeah I have changed my route to a route I walked twice, but at the time was only a couple of months into the whole exercise thing and it seemed so long (3.5k). My current route is 3.2k so I think the new route is grand, and a good chunk of it runs alongside a river :)

Yeah I am really slow, sometimes I think my brisk walk is faster than my jog, probably is (and i'm slow) so hoping to finish the programme at current speed and then will figure out how to increase it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 294 ✭✭intouch44

w5d3 done- I ran for a full 20mins without stopping!! I'm so proud of myself (can only imagine what I'll be like when I finish the full programme!!:p) I found my legs were fine but after the first 10 minutes I got a horrible stitch, managed to keep going, I really wanted to be able to post here that I'd done the full thing!!! Delighted :D:D

Well done! W5D3 is a big milestone, and it's great for you mentally to get that run done. So much of this is purely in your head you wouldn't believe it. :)

After putting it off for waaaaay too long, I finally started this morning and did w1d1. Got on fine, found the breathing a bit hard to manage but grand otherwise. Feel great now that I've finally started it :)

Back of one leg feels a bit strained...need to start week 9 tomorrow, bah. Tempted to order a Garmin 405CX. A bit pricey, perhaps. I couldn't justify spending that sort of money on a phone, but maybe for a watch. :p

W4D3 failed, and failed miserably. I'm putting this one down to a mental block; just not in the mood today. I'll try again tomorrow.

Don't worry, you will do fine the next day. I was on week 3 and went out 1 night and couldn't even complete the first jog. Was so annoyed with myself but was so tired from work and just not in the mood at all. Then that night I came down with a chest infection really quickly. Just shows, you should listen to your body. Have a rest tonight and tomorrow and then try again. :)

Am going out to start Week 2, Day 1 in about an hour! Read through the whole thread, and will definitely be posting here regularly to keep up motivation. It was really inspiring to read through the last couple of months and see that by the end of the thread, people who'd said they'd never be able to run 5k at the start were doing it!

So hopefully, that'll be me in 8 weeks. :D I'm pretty unfit, and have never been a particularly athletic person but I made it through week 1 okay and all your posts have given me hope!

Used to run all the time before I got pregnant, can't wait to get back into it. Just had twins a week ago so it may be a while before I am ready but I really miss it :D Hopefully time will fly and I can get back in the swing of it!

Garmin 305 is a much better price on Amazon at the moment - got one about 7 weeks ago for about €130 delivered.

Ok so went back to re-start C25K this morning.
I completed it before Christmas but due to a variety of things I haven't managed to keep going, so I'm starting all over again now  so I can ease myself into it rather than doing myself an injury by just attempting to run the 5K!

    Anywho...W1D1 completed :D
According to Runkeeper I burned 181 cals too, happy days :)

Yep, looked at it after you mentioned it on here. One review on amazon says it's not compatible on Mac, but others and Google suggest otherwise. Can't see much sense in going for something more expensive when a 305 might do pretty much the same job.

Just head out today and enjoy it! It's a lovely day for it too. Don't think about the fact you haven't done anything for a few weeks, just tell yourself "I'm going to do it today". :)

    W5D2 FAIL!!! :(

Was in an ok mood and felt ready to go out. Started the first 8 minute run and I am disgusted with myself that I could only do about 90 seconds and then I stopped and walked until the next 8 minute run (when your one on the podcast tells me to run) and thought to myself, I would be really happy if I could even manage 1 8 minute run. So she tells me to start running again, and that time I only managed about 2 and a half minutes. :(

I don't know what is wrong with me. It didn't help that I felt like such a fat blob bounding (very very slowly) down the path along side all the skinny people and they were all passing me out with just their fast walk :(

I feel like such a failure and am starting to think maybe jogging isn't for me. :(

Don't give up on it Monife! I know exactly how you feel-have a look back through the thread and you'll see I went through the exact same thing, starting at W5D2 as well! That was just under 4 weeks ago and I did the same thing as you, could only jog a few mins before giving up, BUT I'm now running for 30 mins straight. It's more than likely psychological, it was for me anyway. Don't think when you're starting out "I have to run for 8 straight minutes now" Just start and break it down to little things, like "i'll just run to that tree, ok, now I'll run to those traffic lights" etc. Keep at it and don't be too tough on yourself if you have a few bad runs-you're still out there doing something instead of being at home sprawled on your couch! And when you break through that mental barrier and run for 20 mins, trust me, you feel AMAZING :)

I went to the Boston Marathon today and it was AMAZING. For the runners, conditions were near-ideal: cool and clear, with a tailwind. We were about 300m from the finish line, and both the men and women's races went down to the wire, and the men's winner set a world record.

But what was most inspiring was the fellowship among the "regular" racers - even with the finish line in sight, some racers were pulling up, or limping in pain. Not only did the crowd cheer louder, but so many other racers patted them on the shoulder or encouraged them to finish. I've noticed on my neighborhood runs that I sometimes get "the nod" from other runners - but on the marathon, these kind of moments were more like a giant embrace. I'm looking forward to my first road race!

I've attached a few photos from the day - maybe someone on this thread will be there next year?

The women's front runners: it went down to the wire!

Kara Goucher: she came in fifth, even though she gave birth seven months ago

They go by so fast...and they are amazingly fit...

These ladies came in at around the 3-hour mark (And peep the Tricolor in the background!)

The finish line...who will be there next year?

Week 6 day 2 done! It only took me like 3 weeks to nearly finish week 6 but I still did it yay. I can feel how easy it would be for me to say oh i'm too busy right now but I don't want to give up! I'm starting to get lovely definition on my thighs oor!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,368 ✭✭✭The_Morrigan

Did W1D2 there, and yes I know I'm supposed to leave gaps between runs but I want to get the ole body kick started in the morning before I hit the books for the day.

EDIT: Was just wondering are there any other ladies here that are running with a bit of weight on them? How do you find it?

I'm currently weighing in at 15 stone and my poor lickle legs take some strain with all that weight. I tend to run slow (the treadmill would be static at 3.5mph) and I've also never have any problems with my breathing, anytime I had to stop when I did C25K before it was because my legs just couldn't go any further.
Although I'm only on the second run this time round, I don't seem to notice I'm running the 60 secs, yer man says "walk" and I'm thinking to myself the phone must have reset or something that was too quick!! When I first did C25K I was screaming inside for the 60 secs runs to be over! Obviously there has been some improvement ;) I just need to drop the 4 stone my doctor says I shouldn't be carrying so I can run faster than 3.5mph!

Hiya, I am 15 stone 6lb. I started to lose the weight and exercise for the 1st time ever in November (I was severly unfit and 18 stone 3lb).

I do find it is a lot of strain on my legs and I go very slowly but my legs/calves/shins are always killing me whether it be 60 seconds or 3 minutes.

I jog outside on the path, so that might be further strain on me but I did it on the treadmill once (found it a bit easier tbh) and I would walk at 4.8/5km/hr and then put it up to 5.5/6 km/hr for the jogs depending on how I am feeling. Dont know what that is in miles though..

I'd say it is pretty slow because when I was in the gym I saw people jogging at like 10km/hr and more

    3.5mph = 5.6KPH
    :D

So we are about the same on the treadmill.
I can often go to 4mph (6.4kph) when I'm feeling energetic but I tend to fluctuation between 3.5-4mph in any one session.

Oh and well done you on the weightloss :D
