I got some time into Sega Rally and Nights on the PS2.
Also played a bit of RGB enhanced Tempest 2000 on the Jag via my new cable.
Mario Picross 2 is getting a lot of play on the GB Micro and I'm getting further into the Special worlds of Mario 3D Land.

Is that Sega Rally any good? Did it only come out in japan i seem to remember?

It's as close as you get to the Arcade version at home.
It's lovely and was only available as a pack in with the Japan only Sega Rally 2006 on the PS2.
We got Sega Rally instead on the PS3 and 360, a very different game.

I've been telling people around these parts just how good that game is, and it has certainly aged a lot better than Goldeneye.
I personally think the campaign is a lot better than the N64 title to start with.
Who knew, the PS2 would host a stonking FPS.
It's pretty foul mouthed as well though, plenty of swearing!
It's a massive single player campaign too.

I whole heartedly agree with the love for Cold Winter.

I bought it straight away after seeing it in the PS2 Underrated Gems series on YouTube from teh2dgamer about 3 or 4 years ago.
Serious depth to the game with inventory combos, I don't know of any other fps that let's you move and throw tables and use them as cover.

Very violent and gorey game also when you can shoot off soldiers limbs with AK's!

The story is great, and narrated by the excellent Tom Baker who narrated Little Brittan.

I played all the way to the end without getting bored which is a good sign.

I used have Black fixed in my head as the greatest FPS game on the PS2, but damn Cold Winter gives it a run for it's money, 2 very different games.

Black is certainly polished and quick but I always thought Cold Winter a much better game.

I didn't like Black at all. Compared to the likes of PC shooters and even Halo on consoles it was terrible.

Terrible in what way? Comparing it to PC shooters?? Very vague.

It set out what it wanted to do and the game knows exactly what it us. A console shooter with responsive controls, big explosions, big loud bad ass guns with excellent animations and a meaty feel to them. Also the audio was great.

You can see the influence criterion had on this ala burnout. I personally loved it for the reasons above.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,831 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It was just a linear corridor with dumb AI. It just felt really aimless and the frame rate was dreadful. The only stand out thing about the game was the graphics. It just felt really limited to me and I was bored to tears of it well before the anticlimax at the end 3 hours in.

Sure you can use the excuse that all it was about was shooting things but even still it didn't do that well with much better games out that did that premise better. Put it up against the likes of Halo, NOLF, Half-Life 2 or many of the better contemporaries and it is really poor. It only got the plaudits for looking good for a PS2 game (I got the XBox version which paled in comparison to XBox games) and the fact that there wasn't much competition on the PS2. Cold Winter is a far better game in comparison.

Disruptor on the PS1. A little known Doom clone that's pretty fun! There's no way to look up and down and your character moves at near light speed but worth a look

Edit: I should mention it also has wonderfully bad live action cut scenes that you would swear were from some 90's porno if you saw them out of context

Also trying to get all 96 exits in Super Mario World after recently being shamed for not doing so!

Is that when the whole world turns weird and all the enemies are brownish marios? Been a long time since I played it!

I remember Disruptor well. It was hyped like crazy on the strength of it's graphics but wasn't that great a game on release and most of the enemies were just pre rendered sprites.

As for Mario World, that happens when you beat the secret world.

It is. I've only done it on the GBA version, which I'm not sure counts considering they give Mario an extra hit from power-up back to super; it ends up being that bit easier that its SNES counterpart.

I'm back on Pokemon Black 2, just to be on-topic. Spent the better side of two evenings trying to breed a Chansey with a bold nature. Now EVing it in Clay Tunnel. I wouldn't mind, but I just came off a replay of Sapphire, where you've got a few options to EV just near the beginning of the game, so ducking Woobats and Boldores can get tedious.

Despite having a small backlog again, I think I'm gonna pick up Inazuma Eleven 2; been itching to get stuck back in after clocking the first one a couple weeks back.

Still alternating between scoping eBay for a reasonable Metroid: Zero Mission and checking Wii-U eShop to see if the EU store has taken cue from its NTSC-J equivalent and released the fecking thing in its GBA section.

I might be a little late to the party on this one, but anyone been playing The Mysterious Murasame Castle from the 3DS Eshop?

Famicom disk system action game finally localized - uses the Zelda engine. It's hard but really lots of fun.

Brought my SNES to Sligo for some retro gaming. The only problem is I have to play in AV composite. I have a s-video cable but I've tried a few s-video to scart adapters and they are absolutely appalling. The quality is actually worse than with composite with weird rainbow effects around everything. I'd say it's even worse than RF in a way.

Anyone got any solutions to getting s-video to work through scart properly or links to a good converter? I've a scart cable ordered but will need a solution for my N64.

Juggling a few things at the moment.

Just about to finish off Jake Hunter:Detective Story. Decided that the best way to deal with 'Jake Hunter Narcolepsy' was to use it to my advantage - Been playing it for an hour or two before going to sleep at night. :D

Works out really well. Make some good progress and then drift off to smooth jazz...

Still making my way through Dark Souls 2 - Almost finished now. I'd say one good long session and it'll be done. Overall, it's not nearly as difficult as the first. Some parts are a breeze (although it might be the order in which I've been finishing areas)

Also just started Castlevania: Circle of the Moon for the first time after being spurred on the AGS 101.

Although the screen is glorious, one thing I've found is that the SP really is not the most ergonomic of consoles to hold. In fact, it's down right uncomfortable if you're trying to use it for an action game.

Thankfully the main reason I bought it was Mother 3, so I won't be doing any D pad gymnastics in that.

Had a great gaming session with a mate last night.

MvC2, Capcom Verus SNK, Smash TV, Contra Shattered Soldier, Gradius V and finished it off with some Last Blade.

He's after picking up a heart monitor for running. Going to bring it over the next time for the craic and hook myself up while playing Ibara :D

Well that's everything else I've been playing now on hiatus.

I know the faux-retro fad doesn't sit well around here but is anyone playing Shovel Knight? I'm completely hooked, playing it on my laptop with a cheapo dealextreme pad, would love to give it a replay on 3DS sometime, glad its been a success for the developer, it surpassed his lifetime earnings estimates on the first day.

Not sure about that, some of them are pretty damn good imo. I'm just waiting on Shovel Knight to come out on the 3DS then I'll snap it up. Seems excellent by all accounts.

Not the same but in a similar retro feel I highly recommend Hotline Miami. Such a great game.

Cave Story is great, I haven't played Rogue Legacy yet but it's supposed to be good. Started playing Steamworld Dig on the 3DS recently and it's pretty good I thought, different type of game to the above though.

I don't find it too hard especially compared to ghoulsn'ghosts and goblins. It only gets actually tough in the castle stages where it's a bit unfair due to the amount of Red Arremers.

It's like 30 dollars on the US shop, seems a bit steep. Is it a remake or a new game.

Can you buy US 3DS EShop titles for a EU 3DS?

Yeah it's a 3D remake of sorts. Supposedly excellent. I used to have the Mega Drive version and that was ace as well.

Rogue Legacy has some aspects that you may find annoying, the jumping feels a tad floaty, but I certainly got my 10 euro worth out of it. It's hard to put down once you get going and it's got a nice challenge without being very unforgiving.

I played quite a lot of Spelunky as well. Wonderful game but I couldn't really get good enough at it to get beyond the second world so my attention kind of wandered elsewhere. I had an awful lot of fun with it at the same time.

Any other good platformers and/or rogue-likes for the PC I might like? Haven't really found anything that grabs my attention since.

Are the loading times not prohibitive on that one?
You can probably find the PC version out there and it's less likely to be hampered by the constant interruption.
If you like Max Payne you might try Stranglehold on the 360 and PS3, lots of diving and shooting and more diving, fun times.

Must dl it for the Vita as well, seeing as I cross platform own them.
It's a trick Nintendo have sadly missed with their consoles.

    Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy

Not as good as Outcast but oodles of missions so its a bit meaty. Had to download an OpenGL DLL file of some sort in order to get it playable and a few effects are not rendered correctly but for an 11 year old game it still looks fairly good.

Last game I played was Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past on my laptop.

Yes it is emulation but my entire console (Minus Game Boy) and most of my game collection (i.e the stuff that hasn't been bought in the last 9 weeks or not on Game Boy) is on it's way from Australia.

On top of that, I have only just managed to get another SNES after mine went missing and so far haven't found Zelda at a price I am willing to pay.

I have also been playing Batman on the Game Boy. Damn I love that game!
