Ooh had a lovely swim tonight. Coached swim session. Which now starts with a ten minute core session on the deck. I knew this was going to be a fun set when the warm up was a short 4 x 25 one arm. Oh boy was I right. The rest of the set for me was 21 x 100 off 2.20. (tho it turned into 2.25 when I was getting hardly any break). But at least I got the set finished before the end and I did work my arse off. I know I probably need to push it more and earn a decent break but when you tire you tire and what can you do? Hopefully he will do something similar again before the end of the pool sessions so I can see how I do.

100 sd brought it to 2300 so I am a happy barbie* tonight.

    *don't ask..

:) Three words: Barbie triathlon athletic-ware. Think about it. You'd look fab in Austria.

The reason mattel don't do a triathlon barbie is because she would have to come with about five grands worth of kit. :)

Orxy.....I mean, Triathlete-Barbie, you are brilliant! What we need to do is get Mattel to sponsor you in Austria with their fancy pants and pastel colored carbon bling and porn - you'll look amazing. (did you know that catweazel refers to his ride bike as....oh, never mind....) And, no I don't mind putting together a letter/request to Mattel for you. I'd be my pleasure. ;)

Super! I'll get cracking on that request letter for sponsorship then. And if they ask if we have a Ken to your Barbie, should we offer up dpop or shotgun? Your call since all photo ops will be with the two of you cozied together.

Third turbo session of the week. My legs really feel it on Thursdays. 60 mins z2. All I can say is I'm glad thats done.

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Got out for a one hour run tonight. Kept the pace easy because my legs are tired. Had to stop and stretch out two very stiff calves halfway around. Managed 11k at least. Speed will have to wait!

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Had a good swim this morning. Started off sluggish, my arms ached and everything felt tired. But told myself I just needed to warm up and cranked out a pretty steady 1k. By that time the coach had turned up and was getting everyone to do a timed 1500. I start early and have to leave early so did a timed 750 instead. The tt felt surprisingly good. I know I'm not going to be in line for epic times at the moment but 21 seconds faster than November I will take. Coach reckons its coming good and with a bit more work on sprinting my times will fall considerably, because the stroke itself is pretty ok. Just need power! A swim down brought me in at 1950 which considering I spent a good while chatting, is not so bad.

    Well done!!!! :D

This morning got another hours running done. 11k. It was a little faster than normal, about 2 mins better than last time. My legs were tired, just the muscles feel it, but generally I feel stronger and am not fatigued in myself.

I also had a mad sprint later this morning after my puppy when he got loose. Fecker ran down the road me going screaming mad after him for about 1k. Idiot dog. So thats my sprinting done for the day, too. The dog is fine btw. Currently, he is eating my shoes.

This week is going well so far, just two hours left to do of my 11. My times for each discipline are a bit screwed up still, and I dont know if Ill get a long bike done, but its not too bad, I'm hitting the general targets.

    Some musings....

So, tomorrow will bring me to the end of week 10, and the end of the base phase. Some observations as I finish up the first part of the plan:

I haven't noticed any extra strain from the increase in training.
I feel more energetic than before I started this plan.
The training so far has fit pretty seamlessly into my life.
    I love base work.
I love working to a structured training schedule, it makes a hell of a difference.
I have huge concerns about my bike ability, having not ridden outdoors in months, or done a long ride.
I really want to increase my swim distance to over 3k just to satisfy myself I can do it.
Speed in any discipline has been elusive. I have to remind myself this is about endurance, first.
I am losing sight of 'normal life'. This level of training is normal. People who don't do it are the strange ones.
I'm getting mentally tougher, which is a nice side effect.

    tl;dr?
10 weeks in, its all going well. :)

ffs. give it up on Barbie please. Seriously. Do I look like I wear pink?

edit @ dpop. I hold you responsible, you started this....

A surprisingly lovely morning today meant I got out on my bike as planned. Thankfully I could still manage to ride the thing. It has been three months. Halfway thru the ride I got passed by a local cycle club group so I jumped on the back and chatted to them for a bit. God its so much easier to cycle in a pack! It felt like a rest and the miles flew. I was sorry to have to break off from them when my turnoff came. Did 62 nice kms. The first of many many Kms this year..

A quick change when I got back and out for a short run. It was hard, tired legs and tight calves. But has to be done to train my poor old bones to get used to that again. 6.3k. Slowly. :)

Finished my week at 12 hours. One hour over plan, but thats the kettlebell session. Again, swim and bike are up, run is down. Onwards now to the build phase. Lets see what that brings!

Swim session. Pretty much the same drill set as last Monday but with 700m paddles and a 500m hard swim at the end. 2500m altogether. Am getting a cold and could feel it so stopped at that point.

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Kettlebell session. Really felt this but enjoyed it. A mix of stuff finishing with 10 different moves 20 reps of each non stop. After the class a few of us had a bit of craic doin pullups and dips. And I managed a handstand against the wall. Havent done that properly since I was about nine. :) Yet again my arms are wrecked but I'll swim tomorrow somehow :)

Handstand....after kettlebell (which I've never done)??? You rock! Have another chocolate muffin!

Turbo. Wasn't feeling the love starting this one, and if the head isn't there its hard to get the body to follow. Couldn't face a high cad session so worked up thru the gears instead. 55 mins. I actually feel better now that its done. Seems to sweat the cold out of me.

Now I have to go and see what my idiot dog has done with one of my bike gloves which I just realised is missing... Puppies are a nuisance!

Me and the rest of the sad/unromantic gits went to the swim tonight. About half didn't show, I presume because they have love lives. Or just lives. :) I probably shouldn't have bothered. This cold is mild enough but still has left me tired and listless. I struggled with the set and had the coach chastise me for coming to training tired. (I'm to park my other training so the swim is good, apparently.) Managed 4 x 25 lateral kick. 4 x 25 one arm. 4 x 25 fc. 100 easy. 12 x 50 paddles and pull. 6 x 100 off 2.30 (meant to be 10 off 2.15 but I hadn't it in me.) swim down with fins. 1800m in total. Poor show but for once am not frustrated. Its just an off day. Plenty of time to have good hard days.

I surprised hubby with a couple of 6 packs of these this morning donning a red ribbon (the beer, not me). Keep this tactic in mind for next year.....and then skip the swim practice. ;)

We've had the same cold in this house for a week. Feel fine, then 10 mins later totally sapped of energy. I tried an easy run a couple of days ago. 1k easy into a hill run and was zonked. There's no point in training hard through it, just do a bit to tick over. And as many rest days as it takes.

Ummm....being in the medical field (okay, so it's doggie and kitty medical field, but..) I can honestly tell you that having a cold means you're sick. And being sick makes you tired....but not necessarily cranky. Definitely take rest days from training for they will help keep you healthy and not cranky, but, when you do come down with a cold, respect the effects that that cold can have on your body and mind....and treat that cold with proper rest and nutrition, which I know you will. Mom always said, fluids, fluids, fluids. If it's vitamin C I'm after, I lovelovelove guzzling orange juice poured over crushed ice in a big, tall glass. Take care of yourself missus, or I'll have to fly over there and take care of you myself! ;)

Don't feel sick today, more like I'm coming out of a general anaesthetic. :) Did an easy turbo to see how the bones feel. Answer? Not so great. Sweating buckets at zero effort, and the legs got nothing. But at least my brain is satisfied that I tried.

Purple and gold! Our club had a different design, mostly yellow, which us chicks refused to wear cos it was so awful, the men of the club told us if we were that upset about it to design our own. So we did. :)

Sometimes, I hate my 'friends' in the tri club. Today for the swim they had the dive blocks up and everyone was having a go at a dive and sprint. Everyone except me, that is. Apart from the fact that I can't dive, when I mix any kind of height with any kind of water I turn into a whimpering child. I can't explain it and it fks me up. :) Its the reason I had to go back and do winter tough guy THREE times. To complete the 'death plunge'. My darling clubmates would not leave me alone though until I at least climbed the platform. Which I did, and jumped off. Problem is, now that I know this thing has bested me AGAIN, I've now got to learn to dive off the blocks. Damn you swim coach! In other news, even with all the cajoling and interruptions, I got over 2k done. My mojo is coming back. If only I could say the same about my nerve when it comes to diving!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I don't blame you. I don't even like jumping straight into the pool never mind diving in. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,608 ✭✭✭donothoponpop

Do you know exactly what scares you about diving? Fear of hitting the bottom, landing with a belly flop, something else? Deal with that fear and you'll be fine. Try standing poolside and falling in headfirst (arms in front like a diver) while keeping your feet on the surface as long as possible. Now keep doing that until you make as small a splash as possible- then progress to jumping out a little bit as you do it. Pretty soon you'll have swam half the pool before coming up for air.

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

I did dive from the deck. I can manage it even if its a bit half arsed :) And I can jump in from a height. No fear of water whatsoever. But put me in the start position on the block and I just can't make myself dive. Its a brain thing. Not a clue where it comes from.
