God that is a bit creepy, I'd hope that's not going to be of interest to too many here. This sort of thing is open to so much abuse.

This is a request so apologies if it's not for this thread. Mods delete if so.

Looking for decent apps for a 2-year old on a tablet. I've an old Touchpad not getting much love since I got a Nexus7 and wanna set it up for the little lad.

Before someone says some crap about bad parenting blah blah blah, don't bother.

    Cheers all.

Wanted to check with those in the know here if there were any opinions on offline GPS apps. I was about to spend the £20 for the Sygic app as I used and liked the weeks trial, anything else I should look at before spending that sort of cash? Thanks all.

    Have a look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.osmand

The free version is limited to 10 map downloads rather than a time based limit.

One of the free downloads will be the world base map so in effect 9 free map downloads.

I use this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapfactor.navigator for offline Navigation in Continental Europe to save data roaming charges and I find it works a treat. When you launch it you're offered the option of using paid for Tom Tom maps or free community maps. I use (and download) the free community maps and have no problem with them.

Do you find that you need to have data roaming enabled to get the initial GPS signal?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,788 ✭✭✭Vikings

Just posted this over in the motors forum, should recommend it here too I suppose.

Fuelio. For tracking petrol etc, very detailed and easy to use with a dedicated developer who regularly updates. Free version is fully functional or for €1.50 the Pro version adds more useful functions like auto back up etc. Of all the apps I have on my phone this would receive my highest recommendations!

Have used CoPilot in both Europe & US.
    Works great for me.

    I honestly can't remember but I don't think so.

Easy way to find out is to disable data on your phone and then try and navigate. If it works without data enabled locally I guess it will work without data enabled internationality.

    ^^^

Go to Settings, Location, Mode. Change this to "Device only" to only use the GPS chip to locate the phone, no network data.

This is proper old school GPS. Need to be outdoors in line of sight with at least 3 satellites for it to work. Initial lock on can take 3 to 5 mins (sometimes more). Relock after restarting app will take up to 30 seconds. Moving more than 100 miles or so from your last known location to the phone, it'll do an initial lock on again :)

Anyone who had a phone with GPS before they came out with A-GPS will attest to how slow this was, but it does work, just be patient for the initial lock on :)

Monument Valley is an incredible game. I played it on both IOS and Android, and the Android version is very true to the original IOS release. It hasn't been officially released on Android yet, but should be available in the next few weeks (I couldn't find any bugs in the early access beta). They may also re-open the early access program (you still pay for the game, but €0.89, instead of the full release price (keep an eye on their Twitter account). Genius - getting idiots like me people to pay for beta testing, but well worth it if you were going to buy the game anyway, as you get it at a fraction of the cost. The only problems I found were related to sensitivity, probably caused by a malfunctioning device. It's very short (you could probably play through in 90 minutes), but well worth it for the visual/interactive experience.

Angry Birds Star Wars II is the free app of the day on amazon!

Added it to my collection of amazon apps for possible later download!

    Anyone here recommend it?

Is there any app to make the phone sleep if you turn it over?

    seligehgit wrote: »

What do you mean by sleep?

There is Deep Sleep Battery Saver

Deepsleep battery saver constantly puts the device to deepsleep mode while screen offLifeHacker: "Plenty of apps save your battery life, but this one takes the idea to a whole new level"
During deepsleep mode, Wifi, 3G are turned off, background apps are stopped. Therefore, most apps are not working, including Facebook, Google Service, etc,. It then constantly wakes up in order to download email, sync Facebook status, etc,. It's defined by deepsleep frequency and woke up duration
In advanced mode (PRO), you can customize more parameters, including day/night settings, active period, screen timeout, sync strategy, ignored apps, etc,
    Features
☆ 5 pre-defined profiles: Gentle, Balance, Strong, Aggressive, Slumberer. They varies on frequency, duration and other settings. The former is less disruptive, but save less battery and vise versa
☆ Custom profile (PRO) - for advanced users. If you need more customization, select this profile and modify it
    ☆ Custom profile settings
    - Separate between weekday vs weekend settings
    - Frequency: device is turned on DS mode at a selected frequency
    - Duration: device is woke up after for a selected duration after a each frequency cycle
    - Wileless & network: control radio setting during DS on
    - Sync: Control sync strategy and sync account, auto-sync
    - Apps: Select apps that will be stopped during DS on
    - CPU: Process twist - root only
    - Night period: During this period, device is always in DS mode
    ☆ General settings
    - Screen off delay: a short delay before DS start. This option is used to avoid quick screen toggles
    - Whitelist: Apps are always ignored when DS on, such as online music player
    - Ingored recent apps: ignore recent apps
    - Use APN settings: twist 3G/4G/mobile data toggler
    - Check background data: If selected, it will ignore DS mode if traffic is above a defined threshold
    - Traffic threshold & traffic sampling frequency
    ☆ Tasker plugin, Locale plugin
    Notice
☆ During deep sleep mode on, this app may disrupt your normal activities, such as your email notification comes with larger delay
☆ If your setting (ex. Wifi) is off, DS Battery Saver does not control it during DS mode on

Only out now, I posted a link to this apk in the hangouts thread over a week ago. It's pretty neat, another feature we've been asking for, fallback to sms will eventually be added too

On the subject of Cerberus, I enabled this again today on my N5 and was testing it taking a picture whenever the unlock code was entered in wrong. The first few emails worked, but now I'm only getting the email that says a picture was taken, but there's no actual attachment. Any ideas?

Thanks so much jeffk for your incredibly comprehensive reply.I meant activating the screen timeout by turning the phone over so that the screen is facing down.

Using that many apps to save battery must drain the battery!

Using that many apps to save battery must drain the battery!

Nope, not on my phone, before all the messing and using the battery saver apps i was lucky to hit lunchtime at 50%.Now it doesnt happen till nearly the evening.
None of the even come up under battery usage.

2G-3G OnOff is a widget to a system setting
Startup Manager you open, change what loads and then close it
Synker is a widget you press when you want to sync(or use tasker etc to do it)

The rest are all proven and recommend on various sites blogs etc and as most are free you can install try and uninstall at no cost.
