    Thanks very much.

Nice couple bought it, came up from Mallow this evening so was fairly sure they'd take it as the pictures showed the worst of it.

They were giving me the full asking price, told them that most Irish folk build in a little haggling room and that €450 would be fine. Sister would have been happy with €400 so €450 suits all :)

Honest decent banger, taxed, maintained and NCTd. Well worth the full €500!

Things have changed so much over the last few years, some of us are forgetting that a similar car would have made €2k 10 years ago. In fact a similar car would still make that kinda money in most countries on the continent...

Fair play RJ, I bet that was one happy couple. Grand old bus, she'd probably go another 10 years without much effort.

Yep, back in 1999 I paid IR£1500 for my first car, was just over half what similar aged Corolla etc were going for.

Apologies for the off topic but sure a pic always helps...

    414si.jpg

Actually 20 ish months later in 2001 I sold that for about IR£700 when it was 11, jap stuff obviously was again almost double at that time too :)

They're quite nice imo, I'd buy one if I saw one for sale, 416s had a Honda engine, 420s the t series rover and the diesel were XUD powered :)

    A nice Volvo...

9 years old? Sounds about right. Housemates girlfriend bought an '87 Starlet in '95 (8 years old) for £3k.

You're probably right. The Toyota Yaris is the only second hand car in Ireland that has completely dodged the recession :D

Really? I think people who buy these are quiet sensible. Yes they will pay a high purchase price but come resale time they will have no problem selling it on and usually for a good chunk of what they paid for it. On top of all that they are the best supermini money can buy with top notch build quality and reliability and cheap and easy maintenance.:)

I couldnt believe the price of the yaris when I went looking for a car for a friend of mine but she insisted she wanted a yaris and nothing else.. We looked at lots of 99 ones and the price was unreal, Some were 1600 others 1200 we found a nice one thought for 950, only cause the fella needed it gone quick though he had it adversited for 1450

The engines are sh!te in them. At 150,000 Miles I would probably say by now its seen the best of its days. They have a tendancy to eat oil with high millage and suffer emission problems.

    Obviously, open to correction.

There are plenty of good ones about, and plenty of bad ones (Obviously the bad ones are going to get more of a review than the good).

You would quickly establish whether it's a good or a bad one. I got my brother in law a 00 one with 120,000 miles on it nearly two years ago, 150,000 and counting and bar a spark plug that failed (not the cars fault) it's absolutely perfect.

@BorneTobyWilde - an overpriced E39 with cooling problems?

A Freelander with the K-series engine?

    Yup.

That e39 is an over priced heap. Most likely cooked if it's been driven at all with those heating issues. Avoid like the plague.

Always liked that Civic since they came out, pity they got such a bad name from the boy racers. If I was in the market for a small car I'd be straight round to look at that. A little bit of retro cool with a lot of reliability, cheap insurance too!

Here's a nice looking 190E with the 1.8 and Auto, a nice cruiser for those not in a rush, buy it for little over a grand, drive for two years and sell it for the same money. Cars as clean as this will never go below €1000, I reckon they've reached the bottom of the market and the only other way they'll go is up.

well spotted, wouldn't have a clue tbh not too handy with that stuff

That 190E is a good find, looks better in black and a lot cleaner than the one I posted. Have always liked the look of those cars, would be nice as a weekend car with classic insurance, or even as a daily driver.

Are you for real? That automatic transmission can outlive the bodywork of the car, if properly maintained.

Anyway, back to nomics with a surprisingly original example:

Best engine in these, most economical and with a bit of poke.

Check car registration info on that. Doesn't always have everything, but what's in it tends to be up to date. Good for checking tax and nct.
