This thread has turned into the end of the Breakfast Club. :D

I also won't be around much next season, and will be trying to keep busy elsewhere over the summer, so good luck to all of you, and nice playing!

Heading to Barcelona myself for a week tomorrow so I'll miss out on all the madness of next Sunday. I might try and sneak in a trip to see Espanyol play Sevilla on Saturday night just to make up for it though (Don't tell the wife). Enjoy the summer folks!

Yeh its a toss up at the moment between actually going over to the Euros or staying here. I can get tickets etc pretty easily through work and would love to go to the games, but tbh I don't think I can be bothered with the travelling! I'm working in Vegas most of July at the WSOP so could do with a nice relaxing June in the run up to it, and I really think watching the Ireland v Spain game over here will be incredible. Hopefully the scoreline isn't too embarrassing! Here's hoping for a 2-2 draw ;)

i definately used it a lot less when it switched from the single thread. Be careful what you wish for.

My turn for the teary eyed goodbye. Mini Leagues wrapped up a few weeks ago. Just one H2H league left, €50 for runner up, €100 for the winner. That'll take me to either €750 or €800 for the season. Should get me about $1,000 AUD. Going to New Zealand for 9 days in July so that'll pay for the trip, yay!

This will be my highest scoring FPL year (but not my highest rank). Thanks for all the help during the season guys. A lot of the time I realised what I should do before even getting a reply. I think it helps just to write down your plans and realise how stupid some of them are! Unlike some of you, I will definitely be back in August. The EPL is just not the same unless you're obsessing over whether or not Ben Arfa's stud grazed the ball for an assist or why Tiawo got those 3 bonus points. It gives meaning to games like Stoke vs Bolton or Wolves vs Fulham where normally I couldn't care less.

Good luck to anyone playing the Fantasy Euro game. I was stuck doing my Junior Cert last time Ireland made a major tournament so I'm going to enjoy the matches in peace this time round (albeit at 4:45am kick off times :().

P.S. It's difficult to trace it back but I'm pretty sure I started the whole Drenthe man crush thing earlier in the season so apologies to anyone who took my "advice" :o

I won't be anywhere near as active next year because I'm starting a postgrad over in Wales. Well I hope I won't be. If I am on this the whole time I'll just fail. It was good fun to try and get as far up in the standings as I did. The standard is so high. I don't think I could have done any more really. Fair play to Carlcon and Dazzler and anyone else who is above me in the rankings.

    Live long and prosper.

Ha I can't afford to invest any time in it really. I'll be in 9-6 every day for 4 months. Then for another 4 I'll be in schools from 9-6 with probably an hour commute each way and then another 4 hours of lesson plans on top of that in the night. And I'll have to write up my thesis during all of that as well. Such a delightful time I have ahead of me :D. I'll be lucky to have time to eat never mind check FISO for price rises.

If I can train myself to get up early enough on Saturday mornings I might be able to copy some of the advice on here. I'll miss all the price rises though. My team will be worth about 101 million for the season I'd say :P.

I was tied up with things until Christmas and was doing averagely enough. Since then though I've been free the whole time and I've jumped way up the rankings. It's amazing what a lot of free time can do for your score. It's about the only advantage of being unemployed.

I just saw that the Boards league is tied. What an ending!

It's my first year doing this, thanks to a science fiction website I visit quite a lot. Thanks to everyone here, I'm 170 points ahead on that site (and 40th in boards), so reasonably confident going into the last game. The others must think I'm a genius, but it's really because of here and all the ideas floating about; no bandwagon went unnoticed and I always knew who currently held the Stoke keeper's spot.

All that and only a minimum of bitching!

So, on to the Euros and next year.

Well, I'm down to sixth in the Boards league after the dizzying heights of joint 3rd at the weekend. I'm 125th in FF scout, 6th in Boards, 2nd in BPF and 17th in the Last Word Listeners. Then I'm first in five personal leagues. Three are for cash. 2 personal glory!

Work league has 25 people in it and I'm 177 points ahead. It's €30 a head with €500 for winner, €200 for runner up and €50 for third.
My own personal league with friends has 27 people in it and we've stuck in €50 a head so that's €1350 and its winner takes all. I'm 140 points ahead in that.
Then another league I'm in (friend of a friend) has 50 people in it at €20 a head and I'm 58 points ahead in that. I'm told I'll get €600 if I win that.

So I'm looking at being up €2450 all thanks to FF!

Many thanks to the people here. I'm not sure if I have a blocker in my head or what but there's certain players I just never fancy to do it consistently in FF. Pienaar was one. Dempsey and Walcott two others but, from listening to people on the thread here, I think I've expanded my horizon a bit. Pienaar, Dempsey and Walcott all found their way into my team, as well as others I would imagine I can't remember, whereas I know in other seasons, no matter how well they were doing, I just wouldn't have transferred them in. I hope I've helped a few on here too over the course of the year.

The main bit of advice I think I'd give is don't think about your moves too much. If you spend all week worrying about who to transfer in, you'll invariably have 2 or 3 transfer targets going around in your head, and you'll end up transferring in one, only for the other to score a hat trick and you end up beating yourself up over making the wrong decision! This week for example, I'll log on this evening, check the FF scout team, check the team news and do my transfer. I'll spend all of a half hour on it and I'm only doing it this evening and not tomorrow evening because I'm away in Manchester for a few days from tomorrow. Like this week, a few people had a GW38 thread setup and were worrying about transfers before GW37 was even over, god help them because I'd say they had some week and if their transfer is the wrong one out of the few they have in their head they'll know it for the next week.

I keep wanting to take a year out and thinking I won't be back next year but I've a mate who annoys the head off me if he gets even a marginally better score (even on a weekend where I could be 100 points ahead of him overall) and he constantly keeps me going because I can't listen to him! So this is my goodbye and thanks for the season. I'm off to Manchester to enjoy the celebrations as a neutral - although I will be buying a City jersey and wearing it with pride if my friends who are United supporters don't stop slagging me about Blackburn being relegated!!

And remember folks, as I told one user more than a few times this season, it's a race, not a sprint :D

Right then. Team set up. Dempsey out, Silva in - hardly a bold move. Officially done for the season now. Staying away from this site for a few days, since it'll be pretty damn frustrating if I end up losing our league having been on top all season, so I'd rather not look and just enjoy the weekend.

    G'luck.

    Big thanks to everyone here!

My 5th season playing but my first season of taking it seriously!

I'm already passed my best score ever and need just 25 points to get over 1900 for the season for the first time.

I won a few private leagues but well short in my big money league.

    I'll be back in August.

I'll be seeing everyone again next year I'd say! I don't think the leaving merits not playing FPL again :D Hopefully I can improve next year and hopefully win a bita cash. I won 300 this year but I won't get any of it because the lads I'm in a paid league with definitely won't pay up. How bad sure. I still won. (I'm 26 points ahead, I really shouldn't be saying I've won already :pac: ).

I'm hoping I can break 50,000 this season, I'm currently in the 56,000 region. This is my first time playing this game so I'm delighted with my score. Most of the thanks for my score goes to this forum. So thanks.

Just found out there that one of my friends deleted me from his league. I was beating him by 170 points. He was hammering me for a while a few months back but I've given him a round around the last 2/3 months. He has only outscored me once.

Such a delightful thing to have him delete me. Shows how annoyed he's after getting over it all :D.

So with this season done and dusted what would folks like to see changed for next season.

To get the ball rolling, the one thing i think needs to be changed is the -4 when a defender lets in 1 goal, think that is to much. Look how many people only play 3 at the back.

I would like to see only -2 for the first goal let in and then the other -2 for second goal let in. The -1 for every other 2 goals let in after that.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 6,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭PerrinV2

Maybe make picking defenders more important?

for example on the champions league fantasy football a defender earns 1 point for every 5 balls he wins back/recovers.

Yep, there should be some other way for defenders to earn points, bar the odd few defenders they are not very likely to get that many goals or assists.
Think they need to be made more attractive so with greater choice we all do not end up with much the same team in the end.

Isn't it something like 1 point for every 2 or 3 "ball winning" movements? A point for each one would be a bit much.

But yes, I would love to see this implemented in some form. Not just great for defenders, it also makes midfielders like Scott Parker realistic options.

Sorry ya it was for every 5 balls recovered, but like you say it would make many more defensive minded players much more appealing

    Would like to see:

    - defensive midfielders come into it in some way (maybe as noted above)

    - point(s) for clearances of the line

    - captain cut to 1.5 times points rather than double

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭carlcon

The x1.5 for captain comes up a lot, but I'm not too convinced by it. So what do we do when the captain scores an odd amount of points? Round up the half, or include decimals into the scoring? Neither seems viable to me.

I want to see a bonus week instead of the Jan wildcard, where every player in your team scores double points. This can only be used once in the season and can't be used the same week as your wildcard.

I think the x2 for captain gives the greatest pleasure and the greatest headaches, and would like to keep it. An alternative would be for a x1.5 for the vice-captain (round up or down by 0.5 points where necessary) plus x2 for captain. It would balance things out.

    18 players in squad

bp system thrown in a furnace never a trace to be seen again

defo agree on the def mids idea. easy to implement scoring to reward this like they're doing in the fantasy euros

think double points for capt is ridiculous tbh, main focus should be to reward best starting 11's, capt choice as it is can ruin or make a week, some amount of luck comes into that, and i think it's bogus tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,495 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

I would be curious to see what effect this would have.

How about really letting people use their squad, by allowing you to move people from your subs bench onto the first 11 right up until a closing deadline after the games have been played.

Not transfer in new players, but just use the players on your bench, no different to any manager.

It would change the dynamic sure, but it would also reward those who invest in a full squad rather than a first 11, as well as rewarding those who play regularly. Imagine it, no more clean sheets sitting on your bench...:D

i wouldnt say that. dbl points is too much i think. 1.5 would maybe be ok. but if they increased squad size to 18 like i mentioned before, that would solve the issue of starting 11's looking too similar. Choosing the right players on the right day would involve more skill, and that's what the game needs i think

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 6,335 Mod ✭✭✭✭PerrinV2

I dunno,I think 18 might be too big a jump.If they did that they might start changing some other stuff to accommodate it
e.g increasing budget which probably lead to increased player prices, they might up the limit of players from a club and so on

I not saying its a bad idea just that they could make improvements elsewhere first

It aint broke, dont fix it imo. A huge part of the reason the EPL game remains the most popular compared to the rest of the games is its simplicity. It keeps people interested, its easy enough to play the game without investing oceans of time, you can know near to exact your score from a match when watching a match on TV. I wouldnt go messing with adding in passing points, play points or anything like that. Keep it simple and dont overcomplicate it.

Another reason is how well the site tends to work, although this has fallen back this year and some of the features they removed could be brough back. Last year when you clicked on the score of a match you got the full break down of each players score and how they got that score. Bring this back please. Another feature I'd like to see brought back is the league of leagues, would have been interesting to see how the Boards league did this season.

I dont mind the captaincy tbh, it does add something to the game and when the teams inevitably end up being similar it can be an important differential. Likewise the vice capt worked well this year with having a single replacement for a capt and not continuing to go down through the team based on form/value.

The bonus points this year were better than ever, I agree completely with removing human opinion from bonus points, its a stats based game so the BP's should be based on cold stats imo. That said there is definite tweaking needed in the forumla to assign the BP's. I would say though that the BP's need to be awarded on the evening of matches, not the next day or waiting till Monday. A major part of the game was lost I felt with BP's not arriving until the following day, the final positions not being known till almost 24 hrs after the end of the season was a bit anti-climatic also

increasing squad to 18 or whatever just will increase chance for everyone to have same players. The less chance for wildcard/transfers , the less chance to have similar squads inside single week. Just have a look what is happening with transfers on Sunday/Monday. Everyone can just predict price fall/rise.

it's actually dead simple. one extra def, one extra mid, one extra attack. 20% budget increase. prices stay the same. funny thing is a premier league matchday squad is actually 18 players. and i don't think it would change participation at all, generally there's people that change their lineups every week, and then those that basically never change it at all (a smaller percentage). i, and i think some others might agree, found the game to get a bit boring at times this season 'coz starting 11's were so ruddy similar week-in-week-out, so i think an extra few players in ones' squad would do no harm. I can't agree with Kev on the bp's, i think most people found them just a joke really, i'd be for scrapping them altogether, all they did 99% of the time was award players that had scored or assisted anyway, off their arse or whatever, maybe not a flawed system, but just stupid

Use the extra cash elsewhere whilst still retaining a good squad of 15

that could work for you or against you. what i'm saying is it would bring an extra dynamic into the game. it would involve a little more thought, but with starting 11's being so similar in recent times, i think that's exactly what the game needs. i think most people could handle the extra pressure

    :D

bob i don't think you get me. squads can be similar (be it 15 players or 50), but when the squad size is a little bigger, that involves giving more thought to your starting 11 each week, who to play, who to leave out, and the permutations become much bigger... (think of lotto balls increasing from 42 to 45. lol. it's all maths :pac:)
