Meno, bloody hell, lying in the middle of the road with cramp as people go by you. Can you imagine how many people were telling someone about the guy lying on the road screaming 'my bet, my bet' (my imagination here) as they ran by you. And then they find out that he finished. Great report and laughing out loud at it.

Fair play to you brother, savage performance and great job. I'm sure you were doing your cramp dance on the floor somewhere in the West last night. I'm thinking Saturday Night Fever with the medal and a white suit:D Sure tis no worries Claralara's friend was after you.

Altogether now, 'Cramp fever, Cramp fever, you know how to run it'

Reports about Conn ultra make it sound so tempting, but there are certain people on here who would do me some serious damage if I so much as let the thought of doing it next year cross my mind :pac:

Well done Menopause, bet won :D

Spoken like a true ultra runner. You have the bug now. Anyway,
Great running! . Although Dingle is cancelled (major disappointed in that) you can smash the time in a very flat Longford 39.3M Ultra at the end of August.

I'm waiting for the Post Race Party report. I think I need a few blank moments filled in, haha. Mind you. I definitely remember all the bits worth remembering. ;)

Only nine people between us at the finish, I'll have to work on narrowing that gap now.:)

Yeah will probably head down and give the open sattelite a bash. I have already pencilled in Conn 2012 as it is early enough in the season and from all the reports i am reading it sounds like an amazing place to run.

That is a shame on Dingle as i was contemplating on giving it a go. Longford would probably be to soon after IM.

Just a little short lap of Tymon to test the legs.
2.7 miles @9:30 pace. I can still feel the knot in my left hamstring that took the worst of the cramp on Sunday. I'll have to go easy for a few days as the physio is on holidays for the next week. Hopefully plenty of rolling will loosen it out.

The Euphoria of Connemara has been absolutely devastated by the sad news of SarsfieldRock's accident on sunday night. He is the self same man who roped me into Conn with that crazy bet and is now fighting for his life in the ICU in Galway. For anyone hearing about this for the first time, you can leave a message of support over on his log that will get to him in hospital.

Eddie, after 47 marathons and multiple ultras, I'm sure you can pull through this one too.

Took on the 'long' loop of Tymon this evening and the legs felt much better:

Everyhting felt a bit better agin today so I decided to stretch the legs a bit more today. I am planning on starting a 5k training plan next week so I figured If I couldn't sting a few sub 8 minute miles together today I wouldn't be ready for all the fast intervals and tempos next week...

so 5.3 miles @ 7.50 pace. Felt quite easy after the first mile. Still a few bits of tightness in various parts of either leg but I should be grand by Monday so it's all systems go.

Throwing a bit of speed in yesterday seems to be just what the doctor ordered in terms of throwing off the cobwebs. Woke up this morning and the legs feel back to normal.
Kept todays run at recovery pace but there was very little of the niggles and stiffness from earlier in the week. I threw about 5 strides into the last mile just for the craic.

Today was to be a rest day as I had to nurse a hangover and play some golf this afternoon. However in my drunken stupor, I somehow managed to stub my little toe going to bed last night and it has swollen up quite a bit and from feeling it, appears to be broken :o

Obviously this had me worried as I am planning to begin a 5k programme tomorrow and wasn't sure If I could run on it so I went out for a sneaky 2 miler after golf to check it was ok. Luckily there doesn't seem to be any pain from running so it's all systems go :D

    HH Advanced 5k programme.
    wk 1 day 1 Intervals:
6x 400m @mile pace. What is mile pace? well a 19 min 5k equates to a 5:30 mile according to Mc Millan so pace for these should be 82 or 83 seconds. No Problem I thought. A few months on the track with Brianderunner to chase ago I Did 10 of these straight with an 83 average, so 6 would be no bother.

Tonight however I either have not recovered from Conn or Have lost all speed or a little of both but I could not hold the required pace after the first interval. The HR maxed out at pretty much it's limit for all reps so it seems that I was giving it full juice 9and it certainly felt that way- nearly puked a few times).

    Anyway splits (max HR) were: 83 (178) 84 (181), 86 (180), 87 (180) 88 (180) 88 (180).

Hopefully I'll get a bit more speed in these as time goes on. Next weeks session is 10 x 200 at 800m pace .

I have another longer interval session to do on wednesday and a 'fast' 4 mile tempo later int he week so it's certainly going to be interesting after all that ultra training.

    Total for the day:
    5.1 miles

6.3 miles around Tymon @8:43 pace with Aimman. Av HR 143. While the HR is about 5 BPM more than normal it is about 10BPM lower than on a similar distanced (slightly slower and less hilly) run on saturday, so My recovery is obviously coming along nicely. I'll try to get back to using the HRM more again as it is a good guide for speed training and a good monitor of how much I have recovered from the Ultra. I don't expect to hit all my goal paces staright away but it is nice to know I am working hard/easy enough.

Tomorrow is 6 x half a mile at 5k Pace

For his second speed session of the week, HH calls for a 'Tempo' run, however his definaition of @tempo' is quite ambiguous and for me quite confusing. Tonight he calls for a 30 minute tempo run, but I am not sure if he wants me to run fast for 30 minutes or not (he talks about only reaching race pace for a few minutes in the middle).

Reading this thread by Shels during the week, I have decided to make the second speed session in this programe a variation of the Mcmillan 'Best 10k workouts'. Basically covering the race distance in each session at goal pace but increasing the length of the reps as the weeks go on.

Tonights plan was 6 x 0.5 mile at Goal pace with 2 minute recoveries. I am happy to put goal pace at 6:10/mile at the moment. The idea is to tweak the session each week so that I am running 3 x 1 mile at goal pace the week before the race.

Tonights session went much better than monday. The length of the 6 reps varied a bit (between 0.46 and 0.51/ mile) so I'll just put up pace(min/mile) and max HR:
    6:03 (178), 5:59 (180), 6:07 (182), 6:07 (182), 6:12 (183), 6:07 (184)

Wow I'm actually quite surprised at the max HR's looking at that, that's some of the highest I've recorded. They are much higher than on monday but it felt much easier today. The odd numbered reps were slightly uphill and the even numbered ones downhill. I did these reps on tarmac (in Tymon) in the racing flats. the idea is to replicate race conditions.

Total for the day: 5.1 miles

A tempo is a run with a slow warmup, a fast middle and and a slow warmdown. A 10k tempo might be three slow, five fast, two slow. A 30 min tempo might be 10 slow, 15 fast, five slow.

That's some serious mileage, for the middle of April. If I've half that done, I'd be surprised!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,554 ✭✭✭Mr Slow

I would have thought after your success with P&D you'd be following their 5/10k plans?

Yeah, I know what HH Is saying but for me a tempo is X slow, y Fast, X Slow. HH seems to advocate so many differences from fast and slow that I would find it difficult. Besides in his 3rd speed session of the week he prescribes generally 4 or 5 miles 'fast'. He doesn't give a pace but tells you to run at a 'non conversational' pace, for me that is waht I would call a tempo session.

Anyways I think the session I did tonight will be more benificial to a race specific goal.

I don't have their 5/10k plans at hand but I did read it on the train to mallow and I think It only prescribes 1 'hard' session per week? I think I have a good enough base at the moment ot do 2 or 3 hard session per week.
