Posters without the required information

dulpit

Hey,

As far as I know candidates posters have to meet certain guidelines. This includes listing the publisher and the printer of the poster.

There's a big poster for one of the far right parties just outside my house. No publisher or printer details listed.

I know it's a very minor point, but is there any way to report said poster?

Just out for a walk and noticed Aontu posters also missing this required information.

Again, I know this is minor, but there are rules for a reason.

Section 5, part 2 example 3

– Posters must include the name and address of the printer;

There are also numerous towns and villages that have a "no poster on lampost" rule that the politicians agree to. In Limerick they don't put them on electricity poles or in housing estates (possibly other constituencies also)

It was this bit I was pointing @dulpit to - who to make a complaint to:

An Coimisiún Toghcháin does not have regulatory powers in relation to posters or printed election materials. The responsibility for this lies with Franchise Unit in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

I think that if they don't have the right details, they are 'litter' and can be reported to your local authority.

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for them to do anything about it at this stage in the campaign though.

I get a 404. Can someone explain just really quickly why the name of the printer needs to be displayed?

I think it was to ensure that you the citizen knows who is behind printed material. All election material must have an 'imprint' which gives this information.

Fines and even imprisonment for not doing it.

Where a person is guilty of an offence, such person shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding €634.87 euro or, at the discretion of the court, to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months or to both such fine and such imprisonment.

Thanks Francie.

I still don't see the reasoning behind it though but I suppose rules are rules.

Seems odd when the person's name is on the poster I know. But I think it is a blanket requirement that cover leaflets too where the sender may not have their name on it. I vaguely recall a controversy of leaflets targeting other candidates anonymously at one time.

Thanks for that. Does seem a little silly.

The Journal contacted the litter section in DCC about the John Forde ones and were told it was a matter for the Gardaí 🙄

Nowhere allows them on electricity poles, for safety reasons. ESB Networks removes them from their property i.e. electricity poles. They're on electricity columns and telecoms poles.

Probably because listing the publisher would make it very easy to trace who paid for the posters and spot any type of illegal donations

I suspect the candidate in question decided to skip that step because there's a money trail back to AfD or RN or the Russian government

I was out for a walk at lunchtime. I walked to the shop up the road. I passed many posters from FF, FG, SF, Labour, Greens and Soc Dems. Because I was walking and they're at head height, I was able to see the small writing with the publisher/printer details.

But Anna Daly from Aontu and Ted Neville from the National Party don't have the details added. It was just something I noticed.

You could argue that being out for a walk is a hobby. And an interest in politics is a hobby?

I assume that Anna Daly has been using the same posters in all of her campaigns - she ran in 2020 and the also ran in the locals in 2019 and this year.

Anyone know when these rules came in?

Ted Neville! The original anti-immigration candidate. He ran on that platform in 2002! Sure there were hardly any foreigners in the country back then.

Yep, Appears to be a line of text here.

dulpit

https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/122895616#Comment_122895616

Not on the one I walked past, but like somebody said it's a poster that's been doing the rounds for a number of elections now - so maybe they weren't as diligent when they started as a party.

dulpit

https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/122895648#Comment_122895648

Plus I think it's interesting that for something as basic as this they can't get it right - shows they are not on top of details.

kabakuyu

https://www.boards.ie/discussion/comment/122895648#Comment_122895648

😂No it's not, that poster highlighted it because it's Aontu and other right wing groups. If it was a left wing party or a party that they approve of there wouldn't be a peep out of them.

The OP is talking about far right, not even right wing. I didn't know that there were far right candidates, let alone far right parties running in the election.

So,you didn't see the text but you're here making a big kerfuffle about it anyways.looks like the poster was above head height and you couldnt see the text.

I edited offending uncivil line, apologies to all.

I spotted a new poster from the national party. I noticed there was no publisher details. What had drawn my attention to the publisher information in the first place is that the SF candidates's publisher lives just down the road and his home address is listed (whereas Labour, Soc Dems and the Greens use the party as the publisher). That's all.

The National Party are far right. The poster was for Ted Neville, this lad:
