    @whyulittle
The 4 th picture down looks so much like my immature female Harris hawk
Except for the tail feathers missing white spec on the tail tip
    Great pic

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

I spotted it sitting in a tree as I was driving to Boora. Luckily it stayed around, just moving from pole to pole despite the attention it was getting!

Is it a young Harris because I cant really see the tail feathers or a young buzzard?
I've never seen a young buzzard up close but I'm assumin very similar to a young Harris

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

Just a Buzzard I'd be thinking, but open to correction.

Serious tail damage on it tho
Was once told that's a sign of a good hunting bird
From crashing into cover at rabbits rats or nesting birds

i thinks its a redshank, on it's leg some birds will stand on one leg to reserve energy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,873 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

Yeah its a redshank. Often see them on the liffey up by Heuston station when the tide it out.

Waders often do this when resting. A way of keeping the feet warm.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭dodderangler

Most birds do it when they are comfortable
My Harris hawk does this when she is comfortable and happy relaxing
Mostly a sign that they are happy and not interrupted or disturbed
Not planning on taking off in a hurry

  • Registered Users Posts: 437 ✭✭tororosso

Thanks guys :) you got the location right Dellybelly!, just saw it down by Heuston Station. It was actually hopping though and the leg it wasn't walking on didn't look right at all. It might be better demonstrated in this photo:

Went down to the same spot again today and the same fella was still there. Unsure if he is stuck there or just returns to the same spot.
