Well done to Kilmallock. It was an amazing run from Cratloe and I fancied them today but there's a reason very few clubs can sustain both codes successfully no matter how many good players they have. The workload takes its toll especially in a county that's successful or in the hunt for honours, the year ends up dragging out forever.

Kilmallock didn't really impress me the last two games they played but stepped it up a level today and were deserving winners. They would have to be favourites for the semi-final but history has shown that underestimating Ulster opposition at semi-final level especially for teams who aren't regular semi-finalists is dangerous but you'd have to fancy them all the same.

For Limerick hurling its another significant day, each result like this is a stepping stone in helping build belief. Having come through in 2 games that went to extra time is also a significant feather in their cap. An All-Ireland club title would further build that belief. The Leinster final will be interesting. If Kilcormac were to win that it'd throw it wide open but its hard to look past Ballyhale winning the All-Ireland

Its not that long ago that the Limerick champions weren't even a good warm up game for the other clubs in the Munster championship that is certainly not the case any longer.

I can't ever remember that being the case.

How do you make that out? They were up against 14 men for a lot of the second half and if I'm not mistaken had to get the last score to equalise. Given how Kilmallock blew them away in ET, Cratloe just weren't good enough.

If Cratloe had of taken more of their goal chances, or tapped the sliotar over the bar rather than trying to walk it into the net then there is a good possibility they would have won. Conor McGrath and the two Collins' brothers had the beating of their markers for a lot of the match, but they did do much hand passing and butchered some chances.

Kilmallock though played very well. They were happy to get the ball to around the Cratloe 45 line and take their points. There was hardly a breeze so shooting from those distances wasn't too much of a difficulty. I thought Graeme Mulcahy was very good.

extra time was cruel on those amateur players

They fell at the last hurdle, the unfortunate thing is they would have had 2-3 months until their next game.

While his brother got the man-of-the-match and was top class (think he scored 1-6), Graeme got 0-6 today, worked like a demon and just showed class on the ball. I think he and Conor McGrath showed they were the 2 best hurlers on the field when they had possession..... while other players were perhaps better performers, you could tell those players had that little bit extra class too. I rate Podge Collins very highly too, but thought he was off his best today.

Would agree on Cratloe over-complicating things. But I think the lack of a few ball-winners makes them have to overwork it sometimes, although the quick ball into space worked very well for them.

The Nire out of the gates very quickly 1-1 ahead after 2 attacks.

Great goal from Callaghan, really needed.

1-3 to 1-0 to the Nire.

Would have been a black card and a penalty if the ball hadn't gone in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,551 ✭✭✭SeaFields

The nire keeper is after messing up two kickouts now and only 18 minutes gone. They are obviously avoiding direct kickouts to midfield to avoid donaghy with lots of short kickouts.

If The Nire don't win this match they'll be sick.

They've given away a dreadful goal kicked 2 dreadful wides from easy frees.(the second of which should have been taken from a better angle but for some reason the kicker didn't realise this) and playing against 14 men for most of the first half.

They played great football in the first 15 minutes but have lost their way since then.

Level at HT. Kerry boys roughing up the Nire but Nire missed 3 or 4 scorable frees so they're getting away with it to a certain extent. One red (double yellow), one textbook black card not called and the Star walking on thin ice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,115 ✭✭✭Boom__Boom

Very hard to see Nire or Stacks doing anything outside Munster.

Lots of mistakes by both sides and both defences look very creaky.

The Nire have escaped 2 clear cut Black Cards (foul on Calaghan befor the goal, and the player Rugby tackled clear through where the yellow card was given) and a Red card for kicking out at Donaghy which was highlighted by TG4.

Neither of Carroll's yellows were yellows IMO, (a soft tackle, and a textbook shoulder). Second one isn't even a free.

    Donaghy's yellow was fair enough.

Play acting since from the Nire has been pretty poor, but has brought them no joy. Any touch on a jersey, has led to leaps into the air and even clipping their own heals looking for a black card.

If they stuck to football, they'd be ahead, and possibly comfortably so.

    .

Full force hit on the shoulder/neck area of a player stooping to pick up is hardly textbook, definitely worthy of a yellow. Both teams including donaghy guilty of playacting and referee struggling to keep a lid on it. Neither team has an AI title in them

The Nire have gifted Stacks 2 goals today. Will be raging with themselves if they lose this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,631 ✭✭✭Dirty Dingus McGee

The Nire should take off the goalkeeper. He may not have been 100% to blame for the last goal but why he persists with the short kickouts or any fluting around at the back is downright stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

I'd disagree, and I'd disagree that Donaghy was play acting, he got a hefty belt in the face, which led to a goal.

Beggers belief that Carroll got yellows for his challenges and the Nire midfielder didn't ever give a free away for a head high tackle.

Anyway, the Stacks are doing well to still be in this game.

    Serious heart from both sides.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,101 ✭✭✭klairondavis

Donaghy was clearly fouled before the Nire's second goal. A smaller man would have gotten the free. Referee is very poor and inconsistent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

Some great catches around the middle from the Nire lads.

Its poor football and shocking refereeing though. Can't argue that its exciting though.

Shane O'Callaghan is being pummelled and getting no protection.

Yeah I don't think either side would be able for Vincents or Corofin. Maybe not even the Ulster champs although I haven't seen much of Omagh or Slaughtneil yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,115 ✭✭✭Boom__Boom

Nire have only one score in the last 35 minutes of play, which is when Stacks went down to 14 men.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,551 ✭✭✭SeaFields

The amount of wides from frees has been shocking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,383 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Pretty poor scoring considering it's almost perfect conditions alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

    Both sides struggling with fitness.

Kicking into that sun is hard as well.

Look up the Castlebar v Ballintubber Mayo Football Final from 2010.

0-09 to 0-05, but an awful game of football.

That was worse, but not by much.

Great save, possibly a footblock, but I don't mind that, wasn't too dangerous, and ref was too far back to see for certain.

Keepers should get the benefit of the doubt sometimes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,758 ✭✭✭Strongbow10

Munster club football is really on its arse if this is the cream of the crop.

Some of the wides have been incredible

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,115 ✭✭✭Boom__Boom

1 score (the 2nd goal) for the Nire in 45 minutes against 14 men. Ouch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,386 ✭✭✭✭DDC1990

Congrats to the Stacks, not pretty at all but deserved in the end.

Nire will be annoyed with their mistakes that gave two goals away, but Stacks defended well with 14 men and were fitter in the end, and were by far the better team in the second half.

    2006 Ulster Football Final
    Crossmaglen 0-05 Ballinderry 0-03
    Painful game to watch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,632 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Saw a good bit of club football over last number of years. Saw Stacks 3 times now on TV, and the quality of their side compares no way with any of the top sides of recent years, like St Bridgets, Crossmaglen, Vincents, or even of nearly men Dr Crokes. It's based on this I'd opine that they won't win the All Ireland, and the first good side they play will beat them well.

Be surprised if Omagh don't get the win from here. Should probably be more than 3 points up considering how much of the ball they've had.

They looked good in fairness but huge last quarter from Saughneil.
Quality of the 2 games like chalk and cheese... Great pace intensity and skill under pressure in the Ulster final. Is be amazed if Stacks can compete with Shaughneil in the semifinal

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Always_Running

Munster final a poor watch. The nire gave away two very soft goals and kicked so many wides they really kicked a Munster title away. The Ulster final a much higher standard of game, a tough competitive contest with a great score to win it, well done Shaughneil good to see Mickey Moran back winning titles after his health issues.

  • Registered Users Posts: 230 ✭✭homeofhurling

that munster final was poor, fair play to the Nire for getting there but they are a poor enough side, as for Stacks they can count their blessing that they are not playing Vincents or Rhode as they wouldn't keep it kick out to either side. it will be hard again Shaughneil and it would be hard to pick a winner but the all ireland winner will come from Corfin, Vincents, or Rhode.

Why did so many of the Omagh footballers have whiskers? Surely there aren't that many Omagh shops doing Santa Claus this year.

On a more serious note isn't it time the GAA got real about " neutral " venues. Bringing a Derry and a Tyrone team to Armagh today is taking the m1ckey. It's one thing to do this kind of thing for provincial inter-county finals where only a few venues can accomodate the attendance. Shouldn't the GAA compel neighbouring counties to toss for venue or enter a home and away arrangement? Especially in winter, how many road accidents are caused by this nonsense?

If teams got home advantage then undoubtedly somebody would complain, use it as an excuse to be bitter. You can't argue with a neutral venue.

While there have been coin tosses for club games, in general this is not appropriate. For one thing a club like Slaughtneil might not be in an Ulster final against a Tyrone team for the next 30 years, and that team would probably not be Omagh, not much opportunity to balance the home and away. But had a toss been used today Omagh might have been playing in their home town¹, which would have been very unbalanced, while Slaughtneil would probably have ended up in Derry City has they win the toss, which is not much less of a drive than Armagh.

    1. of course this kind of home town advantage isn't unfair if you are from Dubin

4 every 10 years. Seriously, what sort of a point is that?

Only 4 accidents ( road deaths? ) every 10 years? Oh, I guess that's ok then. And I'd like to meet the actuary who can guarantee that that statistic won't change. There was a particularly bad accident some years ago after a Leinster club hurling game ( 2 or 3 killed.) But it's all in a good cause, preventing bitterness on the part of the vanquished and helping petrol outlets to survive,
If teams got home advantage then undoubtedly somebody would complain, use it as an excuse to be bitter. You can't argue with a neutral venue.

Why on earth couldn't Omagh and Slaughtneil play in Cookstown or Dungannon or Draperstown? Every Munster club game this year was home or away. Did you hear a single complaint about that? Time was when that nonsense went on in Munster e.g. Linerick and Clare teams playing in Nenagh or Thurles when the Gaelic Grounds were eminently more suitable to both. But they got sensible in Munster.
The Ulster club hurling final between Ruairi Ôg, Antrim and Portaferry, Down was played in Dungiven. That's somebody cutting off their nose to spite their face. What was wrong with Belfast which straddles both counties? And Derrylin, Fermanagh v. Inniskeen, Monaghan ( Intermediate) was in Omagh. It couldn't possibly be in Clones which is 2km. outside Fermanagh!
It's just not fair to travelling supporters.

Every Munster club game? So when exactly did The Nire valley or Tralee become part of Cork? Maybe in certain cases their would be a point, to be fair with Munster club hurling final Cratloe coul well be even closer to the Gaelic Grounds than Kilmallock.

Are you aware whether the ulster finalists were asked? Maybe they said no?

By some reports there were 10,000 at this game, certainly there was 7-8000, can Draperstown, Cookstown or even Dungannon hold this crowd? Do these places have floodlights? The Athletic grounds has the largest covered accommodation in Ulster and first class floodlights, well suited to a winter game. While yesterday was dry and bright enough, it could just as easily been dark and wet.

I had posted re. Munster when I realised I should have qualified my comments re the provincial final. To be clear, I have no problem at all with a neutral venue provided it doesn't drag two neighbouring teams to the other side of the province.
Are you aware whether the ulster finalists were asked? Maybe they said no?

Were the supporters asked, or the NI equivalent of the Road Safety Authority? Are Mayo asked if they want to play the all-Ireland final against Dublin in Croke Park?

Indeed. We are all going to die sometime. I'd prefer tomorrow to today.
