Cork/Kerry All-Ireland Football Final

How do people think this will go then?

I fancy Kerry be a couple; Tyrone were on their way out anyway, whilst beating the likes of Donegal and Limerick hardly matters in the greater scheme on things. And although Cork played very well today, the discipline and wides should worry many fans.

When you take into account that Kerry have a significant mental edge over Cork in Croker, I think Kerry by a couple seems fair enough.

No offence but how did you become a moderator? If an ordinary poster had put up this poll it would be pulled due to the small fact that the final pairings have yet to be decided (as far as I know Meath and Kerry have yet to play).
If I was from Meath I would be rather annoyed.

i'm a cork fan and annoyed that this is up, kerry have no more right to be talked as as all ireland finalists as dublin or tyrone do, their not there yet and there's nothing to say that they will be!!!

I personally hope the Kerry players are thinking the same thing. We surprised Tyrone 2 years ago and we surprised Mayo 2 weeks ago.
And 2 years ago everyone was talking about a Dublin - Meath Final before our semi final and look what happened.

If the Cork team of last week meet the Kerry team of today I'll say Cork (if they just cop on with their behaviour on the pitch!)

But damn Kerry, they know how to bring out the goods when it matters. Fingers crossed it's Cork. Even just for the game alone, Kerry winning again would be boring. I hoped Meath would win today so it would make a change having a Cork v Meath final but hopefully the rebels will take it. I'll say Cork by a few points just going on last week's and today's performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 870 ✭✭✭overmantle

Brolley & co. reckon it will be Kerry. They were only in 2nd gear today and are peaking at just the right time. Cork has been the best team of the championship but Kerry are the ones to be beaten.

    Not from Cork either :)

It would be extremely irrational to write off Kerry in an AI final in such a fashion. Today, they did what they had to do, just like all throughout the qualifiers. When they needed to turn up their performance against Dublin, they did just that. I'll be expecting something similar in 3 weeks time.

"Cork by less then 5 points" leads the way in this poll but I've a feeling the closer we get to the final the more people will vote for a Kerry win. They have the tradition, Cork don't but as against that they still look a tired team (apart from the Dublin game).
Cork on the other hand are young, lean and hungry.

    2009 is Kerry's year

    You read it here first.

One should never underestimate the inner fire and drive in the Kerry team, at any time of the year, not least against auld rivals. Yes, it's honest to say that we played well below par against meath today but yet we made it to our 6th successive AI-Final. A feat not done before by a Kerry team.

Kerry4SAM 2009 is on the cards, have no doubt about it.

I do believe that Kerry will put in a huge performance in the final, obviously better than today, but if Cork play the knid of football that ousted Tyrone, I don't think they will lose. They are the best team in the country but the best team do not always win. Meath won their fair share of ball but Cork should be more than capable of winning more, as they have done already against Kerry this year. With greater possession they will win the final, God is good, most of Ireland are shouting for a Tipp Cork double, bring it on!! Up the Rebels!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,047 ✭✭✭bill_ashmount

Delighted it's kerry in the final. Cork need to beat them to prove to everyone that they aren't afraid. If they can't then so be it. Otherwise we will end up like Kerry with their complete fear of Tyrone.

Im going to say Kerry to win, but thats just because I want Cork to go in as underdogs and not with all this hype there getting at the moment.

Corks performance against Tyrone was excellent but they have had a few dodgy games this summer which leads me to believe that they may crumble under the pressure of a final and being favourites. They certainly didnt impress me that much at the Munster final against an underrated Limerick side that dominated for most of the match.

Im really looking forward to this match, hopefully it will be as an exciting match as we're all expecting :)

Agreed that as the final draws ever closer, people will start re-assessing the match. Undoubtably Cork have been the most impressive team in this years Championship but Kerry are well, Kerry. It is the first time that I can remember that Kerry are not favourites for the Final - Cork are 4-5 and Kerry evens. The fact that Cork practically always loses to Kerry in Croke Park has to have some significance. Kerry will be a lot better in 3 weeks time. Can Cork actually improve or have they peaked too soon?

    Kerry by a couple.

Kerry have lost to Tyrone in Croke Park the same number of times that Cork have lost to Kerry.

We did them a huge favour by beating Tyrone. And we will do ourselves (on behalf of the country!) a huge favour by beating the hoors in the final. We are the only unbeaten team in the championship.

If only Tipp could come through on Sunday as well...

I think that Tipp have a tougher job than Cork.

I don't think Kerry are as good as Dublin made them look. That said, they may have lifted themselves for Dublin and will again for Cork.

I don't think it'll be as clear cut as people think. I'm expecting a scrappy game between two teams whose players know each other only too well.

I hate to say it but I was praying we wouldn't get a Cork/Kerry final. I'm thinking we'll see a poor spectacle like 2007.

Here's hoping that somebody new can launch a challenge in 2010 and bring some romance back into the championship. Galway did it in '98, the Ulster teams have over the past decade so here's hoping some of the chasing pack can catch up with Tyrone, Cork and Kerry.

Lets hope it is a fine day. If the pitch and wet conditions are anything like yesterday it could spoil the contest to a certain degree. Would probably suit Cork's running game far more than a kick and catch type one. A low scoring and scrappy match and you would have to fancy Cork. However if we get a good day with a bone dry pitch and they go at each other hammer & tongs and it isn't riddled with persistent fouling, Kerry's greater footballing skills and depth of talent (subs bench included) would probably give them the edge.

Cork have been the most impressive team all year, but you just feel that Kerry's self-belief and Cork's failure to beat them in the past when it really mattered (outside of Munster) will more than play a factor. Kerry cannot be as hungry, they have won it all at this stage but like Kilkenny, their fear of losing especially to neighbours or the fallout back home if the worst should happen, really drives them on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 324 ✭✭Johnnyjump

If I hear another Kerry person saying that Kerry were poor yesterday and that they are now (supposedly) really worried about Cork in 3 weeks! What rubbish!Kerry must be the favourites now. They've beaten Cork 4 times in Croke Park and are now on a roll.

Thanks for posting a link to the story for the rest of us ;)

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship/2009/0831/osed.html
Kerry's Darragh Ó Sé could face a suspension after appearing to raise his hand to Meath's Brian Farrell in the heated final moments of the first half at Croke Park yesterday.

Farrell theatrically went to ground after the incident, but referee Gearóid Ó Conámha took no action against Ó Sé at the time, leaving it up to the GAA's Central Competitions Control Committee to decide if any further action is merited.

Last week, Cork's John Miskella came under the spotlight for a punch thrown at Brian McGuigan in the win over Tyrone, but referee John Bannon, who booked Miskella, declined to take up the option of upgrading the card from yellow to red.

However, because Ó Conámha did not caution Ó Sé, this is now solely a CCCC issue and the An Ghaeltacht man could now miss the All-Ireland final against Cork if found guilty of striking an opponent.

If Ó Sé is banned it'll be a farce. While he did raise the arm, he made no significant contact. A yellow card incident. However, even if the GAA follow their law to the letter and do ban him... it'll be even worse as Miskella was let off on a similer and arguably worse incident.

more amunition for the rule rule for cork, one rule for kerry and then one rule for everybody else if it did happen. would be an absolute farce, weve already seen the Miskella incident being a farce, this would be worse.

beating kerry in croker is a mental block that cork must overcome, had this been tyrone and kerry in the final i would have gone with tyrone again but even though cork have been the best team this year so far i still fancy kerry to win the big one

5.1 To strike or attempt to strike an opponent with
the head, arm, elbow, hand or knee.

It constantly amazes me that Kerry is held up as the bastion of 'clean' football. The 'significant contact' statement is stupid in the extreme. I don't care if he missed him - he still committed a foul. Two wrongs don't make a right, don't get me wrong Miskella did wrong too - but if we keep up this trying to balance out the number of bad decisions it'll never end.

Kerry to win and win well.

Cork would seem to have had a tough passage to the final.
On closer inspection however, has Corks really been that tough?

    Waterford - facile victory

Kerry - underprepared, will be a completely different proposition.

Limerick - dogged and almost beat them

    Donegal - facile victory

Tyrone - a tired team who didnt show up and lacked their talismanic SC.

As opposed to the replayed Munster Final, on September 20th Kerry will have:

    Paul Galvin for 75 minutes
    Mike McCarthy
    A revatilised Diarmiud Murphy
    A fit Marc O Se
    A fitter Darragh O Se
    Seamus Scanlon
A half fit Donaghy if needed
Tadgh Kennelly with 5 more games under his belt

A fit Tommy Walsh and a Gooch in the zone also.

Cork will have to be scintillating to beat kerry on the 20th,the question is have they another gear in them?

Ok, so lets go through the Tyrone Cork game and suspend anyone who made contact with another player (intentional or otherwise) ith the Knee, Hand, Elbow or Head.
Thats... Canty (knees in on a player on the ground), Miskella (obv) Alan O Connor should have been sent off instead of yellow carded for his first challenge, as he struck the Tyrone player with his feet... etc etc etc.

Common sense has to come into it somewhere!!!

It says to strike. An accidental brush is allowed. have you read the rules at all? We can play word games all day - I'm saying that to strike an opponent in the face is a red card offence - you're however still trying to balance the books

If it's a yellow card offence (as you say it is) then it has to be a red card offence

If the bit in bold is the case then Dara is grand, as he "struck" Farrell in the throat by what the Sunday Game shows.

And in the rules, I don't believe there is any mention of the face, head, ar$e, or elbow in the specific rule, just "striking", which would mean Miskella should be gone. But he isn't.

Its stupid when potentially good threads get dragged down like this.
