I thought hipsters were all in to warm beer - always banging on about drinking something before it was cool......;)

Anyway, Peroni for me or Birra Rossini from Aldi - feck it, once it's cold and got bubbles it'll do me.

Hobgoblin, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, Innis & Gunn, Old Speckled Hen, London Pride, Old Peculiar, Paulaner, Erdinger, O'Hara's, Blue Moon, Duvel, Leffe to name but a few that I would go for. Preferably drunk slowly whilst sitting on the couch watching a bike race on the telly.

Good selection there especially like Hobgoblin at the moment but how could you leave out one that's still made by monks in Belgium. Chimay Blue Cap 750ml Bottle 9% Great when you want to tell the missus I'm just having the one. The Red Cap and Triple are savage as well.

San Pellegrino sparkling. I drink it with the bottle wrapped in a brown paper bag to avoid the derision of others.

Someone in Guinness told me it does very well in blind taste tests. People must change their minds when they see the label.

And nothing to do with the fact that they're all 5 for a tenner in tesco?... ;)

I'd add a bunch of english ales to that list along with the likes of Afligem.

A bunch of fruit trees in the garden has had me brewing my own cider for the last couple of years. Very tasty, but just a bit lethal with the last batch coming out at 11% abv. I also put on some strong ginger beer, which works well.

For shop beers, tsingtao goes down quite easy, but for lagers once its cold, I'd probably be hard put to tell them apart.

I've seen stuff like Hooky Bitter and Fuller's ESB fairly regularly in places like The Porterhouse or Maguires in Athlone or offies like Drinkstore. I think even O'Brien's usually have ESB. TSB in The Porterhouse is a bitter too. Oh and I've seen Black Sheep in a few places too.

Spatan and Franiskaner are bother made in the same plant by Anheuser-Busch InBev.

    It is mass produced.

Still nicer than that other crap called beer!

Think of it this way - what beers do you see advertised on TV?

    1. Heino.
    2. Bud.
    3. Carlsberg.
    4. Miller.
    5. Coors.
    6. Bulmers (yes it's a cider and not a beer, I know this. I'm illustrating a point. Jesus sake!).

Why do these need so many millions of euro, dollars, etc thrown at clever advertising if the product is good enough to speak for itself without mainstream media marketing?

I have never seen an ad for paulaner, franziskaner, leffe, hob goblin, etc...

Anyone who thinks that any of 1 - 6 above are better than the others mentioned in the last few posts don't deserve to have a tongue.

    Just saying.

To be fair though, Guinness is advertised on TV a lot, and probably has the best marketing campaign out of those you mention.

    And Guinness is beaut.

I started off just getting a couple of ones in Dunnes that I didn't recognise and liked them. They had a tiny section back then, maybe a couple of shelves. It's grown a bit since then and they now dedicate at least two drops to less mainstream stuff. Tesco have an even better selection. The 5 for a tenner is a nice bonus :-)
McHughs offie down the road from me has good stuff too, but I don't go there so often.

I'll still maintain that heiniken is a not bad beer. It's nicer then miller/dutch/bav etc. However Staropramen is something I'll pick up if I see it. It's nice. And cheap enough.

Yeah they can be nice. Mind you, I had one beer which was made in Belfast but I dunno if it was from that same brewery, anyway, it tasted like what I would imagine stale diesel would taste like. Absolutely rotten stuff. Still finished it though.

    Lovely beet..... :)

I found a lovely beer, starobrno, when I worked in the czech republic. Fabulous beer brewed locally. Unfortunately ive never seen it anywhere else.

It was possible to tour the brewery and buy a pint for 50 cents. It was about 80 cents in the pubs.

Now you're talkin'. My favorite drink. I did a few jobs for Guinness in Africa and the stuff made in Ghana and Cameroon tastes slightly nicer than it does here. IIRC it was a touch sweeter. Had it in Asia too. It's 8% there but tastes the same as the stuff here.

There is also Guinness Extra Smooth (the project I was on) which wasn't bad. It was supposed to be Guinness for African Lager drinkers. Dunno if it's still available. http://www.marcsbeercollection.com/Guinness%20Extra%20Smooth%20Stout.htm

Drank a lot of this too.

Not much of a beer drinker myself, but all this talk has made me thirsty :pac: I pick up the world beer deals in Superquinn/Tesco the odd time, but I usually forget the ones I like the next time I'm in the supermarket. One I remember liking is Tyskie, and that was well priced in SuperValu a while back. Been meaning to get some in for Christmas.

Erdinger and Peroni Nastro Azzurro are to be found in a lot of places nowadays. Not snob-pleasers but quite drinkable.
