Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

You might be right on that then. I know Vodafone have been ringing around all their out of contract Home DSL users (me included) in an attempt to sign everyone up for another 12 months. I was wondering why they were keen to get people to commit to 12 months even at a lower price. Perhaps they anticipate Sky's entry into the Telephone and BB market here and want to limit mass migration.

A Sky rep phoned me a few weeks ago (making me an offer to stay) and when I had him on the phone I asked him if Sky were going to be providing BB any time in the near future. He said that it was anticipated that it would be up and running before the end the year but then proceeded to say something like "ah sure you know how these things go at times. They never work out according to plan"

We’re investigating ways to extend content rights and Sky Anytime+ access to ROI-no more announcements to make at this time.

At a guess maybe Dave and Watch? I've the base standard Entertainment Package and fairly sure I have these at 109 and 111 on the EPG, but both of these are not available on Sky Go either. (Although they appear -along with ITV - on the UK Anytime+ screenshots). Maybe someone can confirm the above?

Reply from email sent to Jeremy Darroch Sky's CEO

    Dear Mr

    Sky Customer Account Number:

Thank you for your e-mail addressed to Mr Darroch regarding the provision of Sky Anytime+ in the ROI. This has been forwarded to me to respond on his behalf. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your query.

At present Sky does not have any concrete plans on the provision of Sky Anytime+ in Ireland. Ireland's network for phone and broadband is different to that of the UK and we are investigating and collaborating with telecommunication providers in ROI to see if this is feasible for us to provide the service. All I can advise at this moment in time is that we are continually investigating on ways to extend content rights and Sky Anytime+ access to the ROI and expand our services in phone and broadband provision but at this moment in time we have no further announcements.

    Kind regards

Now can anyone tell me what the difference is between a U.K. dsl/cable broadband network & Eircom/UPC ? (I think I already know the answer :D)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,191 ✭✭✭MBSnr

No difference as you know.... :D I mean it's not like Netflix said 'Sorry Ireland, it's UK only....'

Quite why they mentioned phone for an internet based product is strange. I can only guess (as mentioned by other posts) that Sky are planning to provide Anytime+ tied into their Sky BB offering once/if they get established over here. (As they did in the UK). They'll probably use it as a marketing ploy to try and get a percentage of Sky subscribers with DSL to move over.

At the end of the day it's a minor value added free service but it is annoying that we aren't getting it yet.

The fact that there doesn't seem on the face of it an actual reason not to open it up, as per Sky Go, makes me feel that Sky Irish customers are getting a 2nd class service again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭homelink

    I fully agree.
No problem with netflix. No content rights issues with Sky GO. You can subscribe to Sky using a SKY Go monthly ticket without any rights issues or problems with our turf fuelled broadband network.

So the only reason left is that they are just blocking the service to provide it at some later date with Sky broadband & phone.

My broadband is different how? It's faster?

As mentiond already, this is no doubt being held off for Sky Broadband

Well one difference that Sky would need to make is connect into INEX (Irish Network Exchange) and setup peering agreements with all the Irish ISP's, in order to keep the peering costs low.

I'm sure neither UPC or Eircom (with their own IPTV plans) are going to rush to help Sky with this.

However I'm sure Sky will start offering it by the end of the year, as by then UPC will likely have launched their new fancy Horizon box and their own Video On Demand and catch up TV services.

Sky won't want to leave UPC get too far ahead of them.

You can access Sky anytime+ from ROI - you just need to have the proper entitlements. i.e. get a UK subscription with anytime+ enabled and plug it into the broadband network in the ROI. I don't think there are any technical blocks to doing this.

Of course serving VOD to a the ROI population en-masse would likely require some investment in local networking infrastructure.

There's a brief program on Anytime today about recieving Anytime+ with any broadband provider, so I rang sky customer services to check it out, I spoke to a lovely soft-spoken scottish lady who serched what was available to her, and she couldn't find any reason as to why we here in ROI shouldn't be able to avail of this service....
So off I went moving my router to near the TV and plugged everything in. The 'Network' tab under 'Settings' on the sky box recognises the LAN... nice!! everything looks ok, so-far...so-good.... I go to -TV Guide - Planner - Download, and it tells me to visit sky.com/anytimeplus to activate/ recieve the service.. so that's what I do, enter my sky ID and log in.......
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    And I get this message:

From what's detailed this sounds like the "Sky Store" part of anytime+. Can't find other articles about this yet. Anyone else have other news along these lines?

Yes, Sky Store is one of the tabs on anytime+ in the UK.

It's not clear however from the report in the Independent if they may just roll out the Sky Store part of the service to ROI or if it'll be the full anytime+ service (including Sky Store).

    Jeez, that reply is worded much nicer than the one I got from them;

"Thank you for your email enquiring about the availability of Sky Anytime+ services.

I regret to inform you that you shall be intimated when the services of Sky Anytime + are available in the Republic of Ireland."

    Whatever that means:eek:

It means they're sorry to tell you that you will be told when sky anytime+ is arriving.:confused::confused:

pretty infuriating they couldn't say that on their site. i've just wasted 35 minutes on a sunday morning trying to figure out how to get it. a simple landing page explaining the situation isn't too much to ask.

This was the reply I got from SKY :

Thank you for contacting Sky Help Centre.
We currently have no agreement with Republic of Ireland Internet Service Providers, but negotiations are on going to allow our Anytime+ service to be provided in the near future.

    Kind regards

What agreements are needed with ISP's? Do Netflix have agreements? Does this website have agreements?

Sky broadband has no download caps, generally, otherwise they would reach the caps quite quick. There is another thread on Sky Broadband coming to Ireland.

They could launch without rolling out broadband but caps are a big issue, and if they roll out both their own uncapped broadband and Anytime+ at the same time, they could get more broadband customers.

And that's all it is. Waiting for Sky Broadband to launch and then probably leave Anytime+ exclusive to that for a year. Typical shoddy treatment of their Irish customers. As soon as my contract is up I am finished with them.

A smart internet user would keep an eye on their broadband usage, and make sure they are not going over their download allowance and caps. I don't buy into it that Download Caps are a reason not to roll out Anytime+, or any IP based service from any provider for that matter. It didn't stop Netflix, it didn't stop the roll out of Sky Go, so why should it prevent the roll out of Anytime+ here. The more services like this that are introduced here in Ireland, the more competitive the ISPs get with their packages and so Download Caps become less of a problem. Waiting for the infrastructure to improve before rolling out these services ends up being a long waiting game.

Anyone got this working? It's now available on any isp but there's no info on how to activate it. "once your box is plugged into router and your anytime+ is activated..." thats great but how is it activated?!

Its not possible in Ireland as far as I know, that's why there is no info

According to sky in the UK anyway, work is progressing well but they will not commit to a launch date in Ireland, how long away in reality is anyone's guess.

Why doesn't Sky give broadband thru satellite rather than landline as there are a lot of rural areas that can't get broadband thru their landline and also some satellite bb providers are offering Sky thru their systems

Why doesn't Sky give broadband thru satellite rather than landline as there are a lot of rural areas that can't get broadband thru their landline and also some satellite bb providers are offering Sky thru their systems

You can get broadband through satellite today and there is nothing stopping you. The reason Sky are not promoting it is:

    1) Is is no good for streaming TV as the download caps are too low

    2) It is terrible broadband compared to nearly every other type of broadband, the pings are too high, cost is very very high, speed in reality is not good, equipment is expensive etc., miniumum contract 2-3 years etc.

If you have ever used Satellite broadband, which I have, you would understand even mobile phone dongles work better most of the time. In particular situations it can be effective. It is particularly effective if you have no other choice and you are willing to pay loads and loads for dedicated capacity.

It is not suited to "on demand" to homes, at least not the way Sky uses it.

For your info, I have TooWay sat bb I am getting a constant download of 8 mbs an d I am capped 8 gbs a month, on 16 th of every month I go back to zero and if pay 35 euro for that, I am able to monitor my usage online, so if I wanted to download something really heavy ,I can leave it to end of period. I was on a wireless bb system before which was badly managed, I was supposed to get 3 mbs but it was all over the place from.5 to 2 mbs and a desperate service and paying 30 euro a month for that, Skype is good as well for what I do, I use iTunes a bit and download 2 audio books a month. I would probably hav probs with anytime+ when it comes as I am very interested in the box set downloads which they hav on UPC

8gb a month is not nearly enough for home bb if you want to stream anything.

It will be gone in a matter of hours.

An hours streaming of SD is tipicaly in the range of 1gb for acceptable quality

HD would be at least 2.5gb.

I would say you would want at least 300gb a month if not unlimited, which is what Sky offer in the UK.

I think I will be waiting a good while for that on sat bb, maybe landline bb will come our way' we were supposed to be done 2 years ago but Eircom ran out of dosh
