Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Signed up for this last week, first marathon event after I failed to sign up for Connamara in time :)

    Looking forward to it :)

Yeah, I'll be doing the relay again and will miss the Marathon people. Last year, for the first leg, I was at the back of the 3 hour pace group, hanging in for dear life. I'll have no such luck this year and I reckon that it'll be pretty lonely for both Full and Relay runners, running in more sparse groups. ...but that's the way the CCM people want to start 2011.

Yes I noticed this in the Dublin marathon. When the 3.30 pace group caught up to me, I pushed myself on for another 4 miles with them. There is something very motivating running in a pace group; it gives you an extra incentive to push yourself that little bit more. Running in sparser groups will probably slow down peoples times by a few minutes.

    Thanks!

    ..and thanks for that too!

Well...if you're up for the half in June, you're probably ok to try track again, even now. Why not give it a try again, whenever suits you. Tuesdays are probably best, as there are more diverse, and larger, groups. You're likely to find a group that better suits your current level. Sounds like we pushed you a bit last time...sorry! :o

We're planning a Marathon buildup, starting immediately after Ballycotton and a modified version of that (largely with shorter long runs) may suit your training for the Half.

I'm doing a 10 mile training programme at the moment (Hal Higdon) so I was planning on coming back once I run my first 10 miles, which should be in Cobh in April. It's pace that kills me, so I think I need a bit more of an endurance base before I can try the track again. (10k has been my most so far).

Dont worry, I'll be back! :D It's a great club, and so welcoming. Last time I had only run 4 miles for the first time so I think I tried it out way too soon...

I don't know if I'll make it over this year but put me down as a maybe. About time you rallied the girl troops for a female team RK.

I did the Dublin half as my first last year and I found it fine, I suppose it depends what you want.

If you want support for the crowds I suppose Cork would be bigger then the likes of Limerick so it mights be a good one to start with....but then future half marathons could be a let down for you due to the lack of support at them:)

    thanks!

might give cork a go so! want something a bit different from the phoenix park , as i run there a lot, so cork might be nicer than the dublin ! if its not too hilly...

Cork Half-Mar is pretty flat. There are 3 short sharp hills and a few drags, other than that it's pretty flat. The hills are all about 50 - 100m long, at about 3/4 mile, just after Blackrock Castle (Half Mar goes up the marina, like the marathon used to, while the Marathon and Relay turn off onto the walkway, as last year). The second hill is about 4 miles, while the 3rd is about 7-ish. [Trying to work out miles based on Marathon miles ]

The Marathon/Relay and Half-Mar share much of the same course. The first 1/4 mile or so (of the HM) is new, then it joins the Marathon course for about 1/3rd mile, before splitting, as above. The HM then continues up thro Blackrock Village and up the Marina, rejoining the Marathon course a few metres after the 15M mark. From then on the courses are common.

Weather permitting, the Marathon and HM courses will be remeasured this week-end, and the Marathon will be submitted, via the AAI, for recognition as an official IAAF Olympic Qualifier. It already has AIMS approval and therefore is, among others, a Boston qualifying race.

Maybe something in between might be nice instead!

Roll on the Relay! Way to go 'C Team - Cancer Survivors' !! This'll be our third outing in the CCM relay.

Hi there, I've recently decided to take my running more seriously and not just as a tool for fitness for soccer. I love running and hope to make it my main sport. So with that in mind I've decided to give the Cork City marathon a bash. Could anybody tell me what the course is like? I'm alot more familiar with Dublin but I feel that if I push I should be able for June in Cork. Thanks

Lads im training now for the ccm longest ive done is the cork to cobh 15miles last october .
never done anything else race wise, have a taken on a bit much entering a marathon?
I heard the cork one was flat enough and training in cobh means i run up hills every day training is going well im doing george andersons sub 4hr training program and finding it easy enough altho the long miles are yet to come.
Anyone got any vital tips or good spots in cork to go and do the long runs on sundays?

The Farm in curraheen is usually a good spot as there is generally a good few running there, although some might find it a bit repetitive for long runs. Although I find it handy as you can have a sip of water every ~2.25 miles, and running on grass gives the legs a break, than to be doing all long runs on road.

Did anyone else snag an entry to Sonia's training camp in CIT next Sat morning? Have to say I'm quite looking forward to it!
As a participant in this year’s marathon, you are invited to join Sonia O’Sullivan at a training session to help you prepare for the upcoming Bord Gáis Energy Cork City Marathon. As Sonia herself will be running the marathon this year, she will share her tips and advice for a successful finish on 6th June!

Sonia will host a training session at the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) track, Bishopstown, at 9am on Saturday 2nd April for two hours. Following that, there will be a seminar with talks from experts including sports psychologist Canice Kennedy, physiotherapist to Cork hurlers Declan O’Sullivan, Fit Squad coach Kate Ryan and, of course, a few words from Sonia herself.

Closing date for registration is 29th March.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

I got onto them and it looks like they have an issue with hotmail and possibly other email providers. Think the mail is recognised as spam and goes to your junk mail. I'm not sure that this is true as I'm fairly sure I didn't get it in my junk mail box either.
Anyway they rang me back and I am registered.

Emailed Gina and its all sorted. She said they had problems with hotmail accounts. Dont know what that could have been but at least I know my team is registered. All I have to do now is train!

Crikey. I wonder if the number of relay teams might suffer as a result.

This is slightly funny ! if they are near capacity, then encouraging people to apply is likely to result in more ....people being disappointed !:D

Sonia's training session today was really good, not a huge crowd there probably only 40ish people. The training part consisted of a 3.5km warmup, followed by a track session of 1m LT running followed by a 400m interval repeated by four and then another 3.5km cooldown.

Changing/shower facilities were there so afterwards there was a light lunch followed by seminars on marathon mental preparation, running injuries & nutrition plus some words from Sonia herself.

Personally I'd have been happy just for the chance to do any bit of running with an elite athlete like her so everything else was just a bonus on top. Would highly recommend signing up for any more of them that crop up.

    I also entered in Feb.
Maybe it was a random selection.

Dunno, but I entered at end of March, before first price deadline, and got a number around 750.
I guess that they will get surges in entries just before price increase deadlines.
As far as I know they dont reserve a block of numbers for elites, so my entry 750, should be legitimate entry number 750 - A few years ago, I entered VERY early, and was given number 3, or 5 (below 10 anyways).

Think that's true, I was amazed that I got a number of < 20 (can't remember now what it is) when I entered last year until I found out two friends had gotten even lower numbers!

Maybe people are put off by the poor quality of the marathon site; of the marathons I have run, this is by far the poorest quality site without even a proper map. They should have had a look at the Dingle site etc.

It's not great but, as the old saying goes, never judge a race by its website.

Well I understand the point you are making but as a Cork person, I would prefer to think that the Cork site was at least as good as other Irish ones and the fact they cant even manage a decent route map is a bit embarassing .
The reality is that there is lots of competition out there now for marathon runners and we are spolied for choice. So organisers need to do all they can to attract runners. And, to be honest, for the price they are charging, a decent site is a minimum.
