Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The "I should have left the credit card at home" thread

I know you all do it........yes even you!!
You get bored and start looking at those Zipp 303's and then next thing you know you've bought a load of gear and justify it by saying....at least I didn't drop a K on new wheels..............
Its the one where, when your wife(s.o.) asks where did that jersey come from, you reply "Oh this old thing, have it ages"........just like she does with shoes :)

So I thought it would be nice to have a thread where you post what you've bought so others can pat you on the back and say how nice it is, so the guilt of spending is just a little bit less :)

..............I'm bored in work, I should have left the CC at home and I just bought these 2 jerseys off PBK, help me feel less guilty please :o:o

Funny I was just about to start a thread about this.

I've had a bit of obsession about ordering tools online recently, with my justification being that it'll cut down on service costs. Meh... I don't think I even believe that anymore! :P

Chain breakers and wear indicators part of everyone's home kit? Please say yes!

Yeah I got that e-mail from PBK, started viewing some of their stuff. Have been good lately, haven't ordered anything in a few weeks (although I'm waiting patiently for one of those in-sy bags to arrive sometime).

Thats exactly what I do :)
I work shift so I'm always off Sun/Mon/Tues & every second Wed.
I know 3 delivery men by first name now.....worse they know me :)
Its a dodgy time for me now though, we're doing the 6 month shift change (from one end of the week until the other.........can be dangerous if delivery men get the wrong day ;)

PS Does anyone have any recommendations/experience of what to do if your wife is going to be on maternity leave and will always be home? Where do you deliver to then??

Sincere thanks. My impulse buys involve a jersey or at a stretch a new saddle.

Buy a Ridley Noah on impulse .... hang on - would make a hell of an advert.
A couple of nights in the spare room with the Noah hanging on the wall seems like a small price to pay imho ;)

If your missus ain't into bikes you can disguise the cost of some items, however, when she is into them, that's a non-runner. There's no way to disguise Zipps as "wha? these aul things? 30 quid luv"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

These purchases are nothing more than an investment in a healthy life style. A cycling top is cheaper than a GP visit (try paying for a tripple by-pass)

Your addiction not as detrimental as alcoholism, gambling or other addictions.
Your constant looking, searching, examining of gear and gear of others (while is mildly psychotic) is far more preferable than doing the same for the 'other type of gear'.
You have friends and comrades who understand and support you. They will aid you in spending but also in repairing when your not.

The fact that your OH may not understand is healthy thing, one must have ones own pursuits. If your OH shares your passion thats healthy too, its a win win situation.

If you put it all together cycling is...

    Exercise
    Pass time
    social outlet
    hobby

If one were not involved in such activity then they would perhaps:
    • excercise twice a week, this can mean hundreds of euro in gym membership (gym gear which costs just as much as cycling equip)
    • need to have a pass time, what do people do? watch TV for hours? go shopping? (Many struggle to fill the time between work and bed) yawn.....zzzz
    • Social outlet: prob go to the pub, unhealthy and costs an absolute fortune, also leads to late nights and sleepins and other unhealthy behaviour (thus leading to a need for more gym membership etc)
    • Hobby: seen any nice stamps lately? (nuf said) Hobbies can cost a fortune!!
So what I'm saying is if you add up what a non bikie spends trying to fill the void it too is endless and less rewarding than biking.
So the next €50 jersey, or carbon valve dust covers that you just gotta have, accept the necessity of your biking choice and remember that in using your new purchase you will be stronger, healthier, fitter, happier and probably live longer because what you must buy you must use!

    Legend :D

I think my "best" 'untruth' like that is for all my boards kit.
She was giving out saying I didn't need more gear....which is wrong ....and where did the boards kit come from, so I told her that we were all wearing it for the WW200 (sorta true) and that it was the sponsor on the back who paid for it (complete 'untruth'). Now I only did that as I'd just got a giving out to over my new pedals & shoes the day before ;)

Oh Raam I think you definitely need the Cosmic Carbones, I thought I saw you eh....the other day...and you bike doesn't look cool enough without them. Definitely need to get them.

I was in Cycleways earlier and couldn't find anything I needed wanted.

So I bought a Cateye Strada computer to stick on my fixie as it matched my bike (a nice white one) along with some sports beans and energy drink.

That's €80 less in the bank:(

I am currently waiting on orders from wiggle and total cycling. Small orders, just bits and bobs.

Did I need any of it? Nope.

Also, most of my laundry these days goes on the "delicate wash". I'm thinking about converting my entire wardrobe to cycling gear to make washing easier.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73 ✭✭Dr Rod Doom

I find the bits and bobs do add up a bit too, don't they?

I go on to buy a new chain, but by the time I'm checking out my shopping list consists of -

    3 pack of chains
    New cassette
    Replacement jockey wheels
    Chain lube
    2 pairs disc brake pads
    Muc-off
    etc.

And I've got a pair of custom wheels and brake upgrades saved to my wishlist...

Ah, it was a hypothetical situation - I've already got the wheels off the Wishlist and on to my bike (Chris King hubs, mmmmmmm).

Although I haven't gotten round to taking those brakes off it yet....

This is what i bought last weekend (LBS)

    Giant defy 4
    BBB 9 odometer
    Helmet
    Cage & bottle
    BBB bag
    Spare tube
    Tyre Leavers
    mini pump attached to bike

    Midweek i added from wiggle:

    glassses with 3* interchangable lenses
    2 * padded shorts

This what im thinking i need now:

    track pump
    2* bike locks
    jersey
    possibly cycling shoes

how important/ necessary are cycling shoes,im just wearing regular runners and putting my foot into one of the cages (are they called toe clips).

PS i forgot i should really get a puncture repair kit too

Pretty key. Runners are designed to cushion impact - on a bike they tend to absorb energy you'd be putting into the down stroke. Also, shoes and cleats allow you to 'pull' up when pedalling - this can be done to some extent when in the straps in your runners but not as effectively imho

Of course if you're just enjoying a new bike or getting back some fitness then its not something to worry to much about.

With shoes, you'll need cleats, and pedals. Its all about the bling in this thread though so ... forget what I said above and order yourself a pair of SIDI's finest carbon shoes NOW! ;)

    Track Pump - Yes
    2* bike locks - Make it 3, 1 chain, 1 cable, 1 ulock
jersey - Yep, but you need the matching bib shorts
possibly cycling shoes - more like definitely need them....and don't forget the pedals for them

Don't buy a puncture repair kit, just buy a few spare tubes and a set of tire levers.....and if you buy them then you need a saddle bag, oh and a small bike tool kit (similar to a swiss army knife).

Oooohh! Not a smart idea. Do yourself a favour and limit the damage by supplementing that question with "...my budget is xxx"

SIDI Genius 5, always bargains to be had on chainreaction. Pedals are really down to personal preference. I suppose Look would be a good starter pedal, a lot of people find Shimano pedals a bit unforgiving as the platform doesn't allow any pronation of the foot which is part of its natural movement.
