Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How much would interns, starting doctors and consultants actually earn realistically speaking, if we would to be working in a hospital right this minute?

I'm not so interested in the pay but it would be good having a fair idea of how much to expect, and it seems like every website I find on Google regarding the pay, have different figures.

I'm not so interested in the pay but it would be good having a fair idea of how much to expect, and it seems like every website I find on Google regarding the pay, have different figures.

This is from January 2010 - Do a search for "Intern" and you'll find intern, SHO, registrar etc. All the HSE documents are here but the 2010 one is the most recent one I can find that mentions interns etc.
This is getting terribly depressing. Nevermind the HPAT - just. look. at. this.

I just learnt that doctors must memorize this chart for a biochemistry exam.

Hopeless. Not only does it appear extremely difficult, but, more worryingly it doesn't even look interesting or enjoyable in the slightest. Seems like a dreadful way to spend my life tbh. Can any medical student please enlighten me, is this actually true - are you required to learn this thing off?

Specifically for that chart, no. Biochemistry is covered in first med and metabolic pathways make up a big part of the module, but certainly nothing like that! Only a few pathways from that chart are covered (It looks way too complicated to figure out how much of it we actually covered :pac:), it doesn't have to be completely memorised (more important to understand how each thing happens, rather than the names of each product) and they're not taught like that, each pathway is taken out and covered on its own.

In saying that though, there is a lot of memorisation as well as understanding needed for the exams (unfortunately the rote learning doesn't stop at Leaving Cert), and in every course you're going to come up against modules that you don't find interesting or enjoyable, but you just have to carry on with them. The pre-clinical years cover a lot of theory and background with some clinical modules, the real "doctor-y" stuff doesn't start til later on.

The pay for interns is terrible, I think I read 30,000-35,000, but I could be wrong.

While you're on the topic of pay and working hours, here's an excellent thread from the Health Sciences Education forum. Worth a read if you're considering medicine.

I've never understood why they don't cut working hours in half and train twice as many doctors. It would make medicine both less competitive to get into as well as having less hours.

I'm banking on everything being fixed and less stressful when I'm employed:D

You can say that again! I'm assuming you're in 5th year since it's an "2014" HPAT/Medicine, so that would mean going into the course and coming out would probably be 2014-2019/2020 depending if it was a 6 year or 5 year course.

By that time, I can only imagine there will be some sort of reform or retirements meaning a new set of doctors will be required to take their roles, but I suppose that happens every year...

Excellent reference by the way, was worth the read, thanks.

Training twice as many doctors actually wouldn't be that good a deal. In Australia, they're beginning to have this problem known as the "medical student tsunami" where there aren't enough internship positions for the interns that come out of university as there have been too many new medical schools opening. Full impacts haven't been felt but it's estimated that there'll be interns that will miss out next year so they have to cut international intern numbers or something.

This is an article that all here should read. If, like me, you're not put off after it, go for medicine all the way :)

I'm relatively sure the article exaggerates in a few ways. Pretty much doctors/interns everywhere in the world have to work heavy and long hours without overtime. It's just simply part of the learning process that's what allows hospitals to run all the time. Australian interns average a 60 hour week and for those who want to specialise it's probably even worse.

Well, medical profession isn't stressful for the long working hours and extra shifts alone. There are other stressful activities like treating patients with critical and contagious diseases. Visiting remote areas where a lot of facilities are not available. Handle patients with incurable ailments, providing them hope and strength to keep fighting the sickness when you know they will perish soon. But it is all part of the game, and the reward is the satisfaction that you are serving mankind in much better way than most other professions.

So you've already sat it but are planning to sit it again in 2014? 3 years to get into medicine? Don't think it'll take that long for me if I'm honest

Actually, I think you misunderstood spurious, Cupertinokiid ... she agreed that grammar nazis are annoying, she in no way implied that your outburst was justified.

The first rule of this site from its foundation has always been "Be civil!"

We hold to that very strongly here in the LC forum; sure, a bit of good-natured teasing and banter is fine in an appropriate context, but definitely NOT the kind of abuse which spurious deleted earlier.

Having (I hope) made that clear for everyone, let's move on.

I've heard some rumors from friends and the almighty "internetz11!!010" confirms some of these allegations, but I'm not entirely sure, from what I gather; The HPAT is not working, by that I mean it has many flaws. So a riddance of the HPAT would make sense to a degree.

    Erm... That is all.

It could be gone after this year, but don't quote me on it. According to the minister of health, that is: http://www.independent.ie/national-news/minister-wants-to-scrap-test-for-medical-schools-3023897.html

Although that said, if it does go, that would probably make the LC even more difficult in terms of people would definitely need 625, unless they change HPAT into a taught school subject (my idea loool)

anyone want to hazard a guess as to what the minimum points requirement will be come 2014 in the various unis? it was 746 for trinity and 737 for galway last year, the rest were in between. I can't find anywhere what it is for this year, hopefully it wont go up much higher

625 would mean that OL maths students have literally no chance.... bit unfair... but then again I have a better chance of getting 625 than getting a good h-pat to be honest... I SUCK at it....

What exactly is the hard part? A lot of the questions are not so difficult (bar a few), once you understand the concept of what they're asking you, it all becomes like any other exam. Practice makes perfect, keep going over and over and over and over and over and you will soon perfect it.

I'm going to start after Christmas, at least 2-4 hours a week, for about 10-12 months until HPAT 2014.

There is no need to do that much at all this early..

You don't want to let HPAT prep hinder your school work either! I imagine the majority of those who do well in the HPAT didn't even being to look at it until 6th year.

everything, like there are some difficult ones in section one, then section 2 is easy ( I thought) but then I get loads wrong and section three the 'pick the middle' ones are horrible, like seriously I'm only getting a max of 40-sh percentile and most of the time its 0-20.....

    its awful....:(

Yeah, no way it'd be gone by 2014. Sadly

You can't even get 625 because they have this system in place:
Total points = Leaving Certificate (adjusted) + HPAT score
    Up to 550: no adjustment
    >550: 5 points = 1 adjusted point
Maximum LC score of 625 = 565 adjusted points

An example: If your unadjusted LC points is 565, and HPAT score is 190:

Your adjusted LC points is 553
    553+190=743 Total points
In 2012 you need about 730 points to get into medicine.

Yeh I'm aware of all that its just I'll end up with a score of like 150 MAX in the hpat and that leaves me with NO CHANCE of getting medicine even if I got 625 (or 565 adjusted) :(

They're making the hpat seem wayyyyy more important that the LC but it shouldn't be as its not a taught subject and you havnt spent 3 years practicing for it :/
