IT was on RTE radio 1 this morning about confusion that some people are going to face.

Why do you keep picking at me?

    Ok thanks!
You have your ear to the ground, and are talking to the contractors, have they told you / do you believe that the scheme will now open in early October, as per that newspaper article?
I thought you mentioned before that there was to be 8 weeks or so of TII testing etc starting in mid-September, and that it was opening on 24/11/17?

Yes I did mention that it was to open on the 24th of November, but that has changed at the end of the day it all about the money, the contractors won't hand it over unless the get paid so roll on the 6th of October yours m17,anyway that 8 weeks of road testing seemed a bit long

TII don't actually need 8 weeks for testing, it's just an excuse to delay the opening

Yep. As I said a few times on this thread, TII wouldn't have budgeted for paying out money in 2017 so they couldn't pay it.

OTOH, the contractors will have taken a loan out to build the road, so the sooner they can start getting paid, the better for them

And for both sides, nobody really wants to see a fine piece of infrastructure lying idle, so the talks were always going to be a compromise between what the contractors could live with versus what TII could afford in 2017.

From 2018 onwards, the amount TII will be paying out has presumably already been agreed and budgeted for.

Agree and have also said this previously as well that this "testing" was bullsh1t. When other motorways were finished, they were opened.

FYI: Google have marked the roundabouts on the N17 and the N63, no sign of changes on the N18 or the (R446) old Dublin road yet.

Also Question for you all, at the junction 16 Southbound on the M18 does that mean going through Gort town that road will become the R380? and What will the road number be between Oranmore and Kilcolgan (N67) or the (R458) and will you still be allowed to go at 100km/h between Oranmore and Kilcolgan?

The N66 that currently goes through Gort will probably become the R458 as it will be the alternative to the M18 in the case of motorway closures - this route designation will most likely continue to Kilcolgan where the N67 will take over from there towards Galway. The R458 speed limit will default to 80kph unless there's a special bylaw pertaining to that section of road.

The Loughrea to Ballinasloe road (the old N6) now the R446 regional road is 100kph.
Hopefully the current Gort to Oranmore road will have a 100kph limit on it too when its downgraded.

It'll be 100km/h from Oranmore to Kilcolgan as this will become the N67.

    The rest.. who knows.

Shouldn't the sign for Dublin also say Limerick at this section? I know it's previously been signposted showing you need to go three-quarters way around the roundabout, but shouldn't it also be signposted here?

The mainline of the M17 and M18 looks great. However I would genuinely worry about the size of the M17 v M18 signs on the roundabout under the Rathmorrisey junction and the fact they have no downlighting. I reckon at night these will be hard to see until you are right at them, and hesitant drivers may cause an accident.
In general downlighting is not a feature of signs on Irish motorways and when you consider the signs are often quite small this seems like an oversight to me. Maybe not such a problem when traffic volumes are low but as they increase this will definitely have an impact on safety.

With the high standard of retro reflective sheeting used in signs these days the only way you won't see those signs at night is if you don't have your lights on.
Absolutely no need to go to the expense of downlighting, not to mention the cost to maintain / replace said lights following a collision or such.

Just to add, by the time you get to those 2 signs you will have passed at least 1 if not 2 Advance Directional Signs telling you where the exit is.
No excuse to be slowing down to read them at all.

Having said that, when the M6 was being built at one stage there was a HUGE flashing VMS sign in Kinnegad with Dublin and an arrow to turn right.
I often used to see cars turn around as they'd missed the turn.

Speed restrictions on the M6 through the construction zone at Rathmorrisy appear to have been lifted - 120 all the way through. Although there was still a Traffic Corps car checking for speeders on the Westbound side earlier tonight....!

Was it definitely a Traffic Corps car? Could've been m17 out with the camera.

I think he drives a black pickup, like the ones that are allowed onto the motorway from the sisk yard in cartymore.

Looking at the Rathmorrisey pictures above I've a silly question. The motorway regulations appear to end before the roundabout pert of the junction. Would that be normal for a junction like this? The only way to get onto or off the roundabout is from one of the motorways
