No, I don't need any specialised software or anything to see these. This is just plain old windows detection.
I have SSID broadcast disabled and WPA2.
When I enable the wireless then, I have "Other network", "Thomson_Guest_1" and "Thomson_Guest_2". The guest accounts have no encryption. They're still there today.

Hi, Just an update on this problem, I too have the latest firmware STBA.01.36 and get this "GUEST_1" and "GUEST_2" broadcasting with no security, but it seems to go when i log into the router and disable, apply and then re enable the wireless. I can also re create it when the wireless is on (enabled) and press the little wireless button on the side of the router (didnt even know it was there !) to turn wireless off then press it again to turn it on and hey presto the guest networks are back ! .

So for me at the moment till UPC ring me back it seems like you can get rid of them by logging into the modem and disabling the wireless, apply it and then reanable it , The Guest networks seem to stay off. Stay away from the little button on the side :-) hope this helps somebody.

^^ I got that solved after ringing them up, by the way. I was on the phone to them for a long time and they were a bit stumped as to what was causing it. They eventually sorted it out but they were going to send someone out to switch it if their engineers couldn't figure it out.

Hi, you say they sorted it out, may i ask what they did ?

I have no idea; they fixed it after I was on the phone to them. The firmware version is still the same so it must be some setting that they switched.

I don't think it's anything that the customer has the power to change anyway.

Sorry, i just spoke to a very helpful engineer at UPC called Sean and we managed to find the problem, so if you have it at least you can refer to this. In the Stock firmware for the Thompson Modem there is two wireless guest accounts but they are hidden for UPC users, the techs still have access to our Modems and that includes the hidden accounts, we found that when turning the wireless off and then on via the wireless button on the side, the guest accounts "Closed network" setting was set to "Open" by him changing this to closed, the guest accounts do not re-a peer. He will escalate this to the guys that look after the firmware and hopefully a fix is pushed out soon.

I would test it by pressing the wireless button on the side of the Modem to turn wireless off and then press it again to see if the guest accounts come back , if not id say your OK, but don't forget if you ever do a modem reset it will go back to the same behaviour

I tried that and it's fine. Hopefully they'll have new firmware out the need comes to reset it!

Does connectng the supplied dect phone to the router cause lag or any other pronlems. I ask because the riuter is pretty unstable as it is and I imagine that asking it to make calls/or just having a phone connected would add to the problems?
i don't think so, at least not in my experience.

i've also seen it mentioned before that altho the phoneline is voip based it runs on completely separate frequencies to the broadband so they do not affect each other.

    Another problem.

When I connect to the wireless, it cuts off all the other connections to the internet. I haven't tested it thoroughly but I do recall something similar happening at the time with another laptop but thought it was a once off. I don't think it's my laptop so.

Not only that, but it appears that the UPC router resets, judging by the up time on the administration page.

After resetting wireless and wired connections behave as normal. It's not an enormous problem but I don't want all connections breaking every time I turn on the laptop. It's extremely annoying to anyone who wants an uninterrupted connection.

Any ideas what could cause this?

Wireless settings are mostly default apart from SSID broadcast disabled and WPA2-PSK only.

I too have problems with this modem:

I'm experiencing connection hangs with this router. I'm still shown as connected to the router, but cannot sent/receive any data to the Internet. Also cannot browse the routers web interface also. Connection just times out. Have to reset the wifi interface to get connection again. This happens about 10 times a day.

Happens on a dell laptop (both Windows & Linux) and an Nexus One phone running Android 2.3.6.

I too was having the issues described in the 2 posts above with dropouts and hangs. Would you be using an Intel AGN 4965 wireless card by any chance? This card is known to be buggy for using wireless "N" and especially with windows 7.

It got so bad that I completely reinstalled the OS on my laptop (Dell XPS M1530) and it has been fine since.

Never had the problems with my previous Dlink 655 router but I never usen the "N" mode as there was no point due to slow WAN speeds.

It's an Atheros. It's a clean install of Windows 7. I'll try updating the drivers. If that doesn't work, I'll try switching off the wireless n.

Neither of those worked. :( Any more ideas?

If you are using N make sure that you have wireless mode set to a/g/n on your laptop (if there are any other computers connected that only have G capabilities you will only get 144mbps so I would select b/g mode in that case).
Try using channel 7 in the "G" channels and obviously make sure that the router is outputting via same channel (UPC advise using either 1 or 7). Security should be TKIP+AES for N.
Also make sure that any other computers connected are using same settings
    channel ect.
You might also want to download a a free program called "insider" which will show you all of the wireless routers broadcasting in your area and how strong their signals are on each channel to establish if interference is an issue.

Cant think of anything else at the moment but these routers are buggy end of story so it will never be 100% reliable.

My card is also "Ethernet, 802.11a/g/n (Intel 4965)". Behavious is same on both Windows 7 and Linux (specifically Backtrack 5 & Linux Mint 12). my Nexus one also experiences this as does the partners T-mobile MyTouch (HTC)

Its the Intel 4965 having difficulties which causes the router to reboot. Been there done that!

my router ain't rebooting, connection to the router just hangs. connecting to the web interface also hangs. Also my phone doesn't have that wifi adapter.

I will test it with an alfa 500mw.

Im on 1.30 firmware, there is no way to force an upgrade I take it?

The tv box has lots of annoying problems also.

since upgrading to this router my wife hasn't able to vpn into work.
her tech support reckon it must be the router, any idea what settings need to be tinkered with to enable a vpn?

Man, thats fairly tasty.... definitely going to have a go of that build, cheers!

    No trickery involved. ;)
I was having issues with the modem, advised them that the modem was constantly resetting itself. They came to the obvious conclusion that the modem was faulty and that they would have to send me a new one. I told them I had my own modem lying around, and would be willing to use that to save them the cost of sending a new modem out. They took the MAC address, and provisioned it on the network, and I was up and running within a half an hour. :) Happy days!

I know nothing about USENET, so I can't really comment. :pac:

Good to hear your config is working again. Very strange about the delay. I'll see if the same thing happens me when I eventually get another router with Tomato. Good to hear the guide was helpful though, cheers. :D

    -Mick.

It looks like UPC won't be enabling bridging / Port-base Passthrough despite saying so via their twitter account. Nor will they swap out for a Cisco EPC3925 which they are supplying to businesses and does allow bridging.

If I were to get a sepeate DOCSIS 3 modem and set the MAC address to the same as my current thompson modem, will that work? Will they need to do anything on their end?

Really pissed off at the lack of bridging support. Double NATing using DMZ host sucks.

i'm just wondering i dont know if im in the right place but i recently got upc 50 meg broadband now im on my laptop and i only seem to be able to get at the best of times 20 meg i rang them up and the person said that because its wireless i can only receive 20 meg as its impossible for a wireless connection to get anymore speed than that without a dongle like transmitter plugged in, something the salesman failed to mention when we applied for it, i was just wondering if this is true about getting a transmitter that it will improve speeds greatly i found a few on maplin the one i wanted to get was this one - Edimax N150 Wireless nano USB Adaptor it says it can reach up to 150 megs but i want to know if i should buy this or if the guy on the phone was talking a load of crap, thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,363 ✭✭✭Gadgetman496

If your existing onboard wireless doesn't support 'N' then it would improve it. You can get THIS for a lot less than the Maplin one. They work great and do exactly the same thing.

it does support n it says 802.11n however on the site it says its compatable with n/g/b however will that not make a difference?

If your laptop already supports 'N' then the USB adapter won't make any difference. Remember too, wireless never achieves speeds as high as wired no matter what type of wireless you use.

Have you done a speed test on your laptop while it's connected via cable? See what speeds you get that way.

i did do a speed test while wired and i was getting about 48 megs

Buy a set of these and you can have the best of both worlds.

You'll have a great connection upstairs with them (even for streaming).

If you get them? don't bother with the supplied software, just plug them in, they work straight out of the box. ;)
