I officially hate my driver and teeing off! It's my Achilles heel and soul destroying having no confidence off the tee box...use a 3W that's fine but when that goes belly up I'm really in trouble!

Good form in wind, very odd.

4 over for 11 , but had to pick kids up.

Hopefully I dont think about it too much. Mental side has improved, all parts improved. Short stuff still weak. But good signs as only had 17 putts in 11 holes.

All good signs. Playing as much as I can.

I love the kids and all that, but school rocks for Dads golf.

When I want to improve a particular shot I spend a bit of time on the range. Problem is that I end up hitting a few of my clubs several times and can wear them out in just a day or two. My 3-wood on my last set looked like a sand pit from all the dings and stars on it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 892 ✭✭✭Ben1977

My game is really strange at the moment. Think its down to mental things. Striking my irons really well but can't seem to align myself correctly. Changed my setup and take away, distance has increased with irons and tempo is much better, just can't hit the dance floor.
Short game needs alot of work, putting not too bad but chipping is poor. Technique is ok, just the choice is all wrong. Will chip and pitch using LW to 7ir, just think I'm not selecting the right shot or club at the right time. Well if I increased the GIR it would take the pressure off the chipping>

Are your misses consistently short/long/left/right? Are you taking on the target too much or playing to the middle of the green?

Maybe might be worth your while narrowing your selection for chipping to just 3 different options and leave the rest down to practice and feel?

The really bad one is a straight left miss. Think its coming from my old fault which was a slice always, so am still aiming at the LHS of the green expecting for it to come back.

Maybe cutting down the options, and number of clubs might tighten up the misses.

Played so-so all year and then went for a lesson with David Lewis in Greystones. Within a week I won a corporate event in Carton House (weekend away for family;) ). I then I took a few weeks off but went out over weekend and won my first Sunday competition on my home course. Shot 6 over off 12 so down to 10.3 now.. 2 shot cut and my lowest mark equalled. 7 over in carton and 6 over at home. Well pleased with that.

The question how long will this last until it disappears again!!

I have a choice to watch The Kazakhstan Open or get out in that strange looking weather and practice.

Havent had wet gear on in months, winter golf is back soon. The range looks inviting.

Still all golf every way. :)

    Long time follower finally posting.

I took 6 lessons over the summer and know starting to have a real swing.

Pretty please of the progress but I haven't work out yet how to transfer it on the course.

I do seems to be able to play good golf for 7 holes and then not able to have a good tee shot.

Jaysus AJ, just saw this now, savage score congrats, but you should be shot for that many putts:pac:.

84 putts in my last 2 rounds, 74 points from those two rounds.
I should be 12 putts less than that at least.
12 * 0.3's would have me at my goal of 13.2 HC for this year... If my Aunty had balls I suppose.
Putting mat has been worn thin this week, out tomorrow to get the monkey off my back.

Short game isn't up to scratch either, leaving myself way more to do on the greens from 100 and in.

Played a par 3 course today to prep myself for 18 holes on Friday. Shot 72 with 6 pars I think it was must check. Still improving, finding it that I'm always trying to burst the ball to get it up and long. When I actually relax and have a nice flow swing I hit it beautifully and hit the greens, then only for putting to let me down.

Not bad - sort of playing to 9-10. Bogey, par, bogey, par sort of golf. The odd double - then the odd birdie. Not bad - but nothing to get too excited about.

Am holding off on any changes until my season is over in two weeks.

Going to use November to reshape my driving with a pro and trackman.

Got to grips with the putting a bit, now holding the face square longer after strike - this has worked so far, was closing face too fast and missing left.

Have been experimenting with a hybrid - I guess I was never hitting these like an iron , so was not mad about them - got a tip from a Golf Digest - is working so far. Needed a club between Driver (as not perfect) and 5 iron. Working ok so far - not sure about tee height but.

Wedges are weak, particularly when not a full shot. Going to go to Kenny Fahey about this over winter, too steep with them and end up fat.

So hope to come back sharp in February and get to 5 next year. Nothing wrong with a bit of dreaming.

    `
Irelands - Golf Digest Issue 93 October - J Day on cover.

I guess , I just didn't know what to do with a Hybrid - and have seen different ball positions by Crossfield etc.

    But Harmon says.

    Hit Down on your Hybrids
Like a middle iron - He still has ball a little further forward than me (a few inches inside your front heel)

but he says and does in photo take a little diviot - in fact it is a large divot in photo almost fat :p

The divot comes after the ball - he says consider it a 5 iron.

But make sure your weight gets all the way to the front side as you swing through the ball.

    DO NOT

    Sweep
You are not hitting a driver

He also recommends them from rough - but with a cut. And slightly open.

So the only thing I need to test is tee height. The risk with it for me is - when on tee box, even a slight height on tee will make me try sweep it , but this is the wrong action for the club.

So - new to me too , but it was just good to hear a top coach confirm - you are not hitting a driver, do not sweep. Get weight to left , do not let weight go to right foot after strike.

    Simples :P

Maybe the picture paints a 1000 words.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭the lawman

Thanks FDP that's what I've been getting told by guys but I've been sweeping too. Time to change/get lesson.

Wouldn't recommend this time of year for wedge work. The ground will be to wet for a consistent strike. Start next March IMO

    @ Josie

Yes perhaps, I think my problem is I get way too steep,

I get away with it in summer and on links courses - but it shows up big time when I hit a parkland or wet conditions.

So a flaw there that could be looked at by a pro perhaps.

    But, good point.

I hit quite steep with my wedges taking a big divot. It's a very consistent strike in good conditions but it becomes very variable in winter. More to do with the lack of resistence in soft ground I think. I try to hit it a bit cleaner in winter but that resuls in the occasional thin one over the green

My driving is not too bad. Drive 220 on average. Iron play consistant enough, when i keep my head down. But any shot under 100yards is wat kills me. Wedges are just brutal.
    Puttin not too bad.

My golf is all over the place.
    Playin off 22.
    Got 8points in front 9
Got 20 points in back 9
    In my last round

    :(

Game has been good lately but keep messing up 2/3 holes leading to 31/32/33 points. Feel like ive had a score in me and yesterday it happened. Everything was good bar 2 holes where i had lost concentration thinkin about score!

Drove it great and Had 21 putts on 16 of the holes i scored on leading to 42pts :) the putter was absolutely smokin hot. Just gonna keep hitting short game over the winter now!

Game is a sleeping giant :-) Driving the ball consistent enough, No hooking which was my downfall... annoyed if I am not getting pars, and pissed off with bogeys.

However... I need to explore a 60 degree wedge,

Putting, was the strongest part of my game last year, is currently killing me... I am not sinking any long - mid putts, where I used to sink a bag of them,

Got my first ever eagle from the putter on saturday, holed out from 100 yards before but this one was much better.
540m Par 5 with wind behind us, drive went 340m, 5i hybrid 200m to about 8 feet and nailed the putt *fistpump*

It was Jack Nichlaus Serengeti course in South Africa, wonderful track!

34 points Sunday and 33 points on Saturday. Sunday was much better than Saturday though as it came with 2 scratch holes on the back 9 off 17.

As always, main problem is short game

Had my second ever lesson on a Play witha Pro day. Man he tore it apart or so it seems. Thankfully it seems like its all stuff I can work on in the range.
His feedback covered the whole spectrum:

    - ball position
    - weight distribution
    - follow through
    - compressing the ball
    - lining up putts

All stuff I needed to hear, maybe not in succession though.
Ego is dented but it all needs to be done.

Also looks like "my clubs are ****e" and the inch longer shaft isn't warranted which I had a sneaky suspicion about for a while anyway. << This is good news the OH can be kind to me at Xmas ;-)

To sum up my game this year, I'd say I've been steady. Starting to understand my own game a bit better. Time to start converting this into cuts. Disappointed as my last 2 rounds in qualifying were going well untill the last 3 to 4 holes. Struggling with alignment and being comfortable over irons. Something to work on over the winter. Tempo is also a big problem. Can't seem to control it. Can't get out of the habit of swinging at the ball. I get to the top then its just, get to the ball with as much speed as possible. Can't just let the ball get in the way.
Short game has improved and pace of putts much better.

So, a new pro on board - I had gone to a pro about 18 months to a year ago and made progress with swing - but it seems I've drifted back to my old ways ( poor shoulder turn, bad weight transfer, OTT and too much hip rotation on back swing) - This is what I was told in first lesson - lol, retire. Change always sounds worse than it is - works out in the end. So a good time to work on a few things. I'm giving it 3 to 4 months.

The old pro I was with - was for top players and has his own golf career. He was tricky to get and expensive. So changed to local driving range and much easier to get in, done and home. Also a bit more realistic for a mid range handicap player.

So a bit of work ahead - still trying to play once a week - can be painful during change as you are accepting a deterioration for a while on the course.

Short game gone ropey again and putting very poor - definitely missing the summer evenings at the putting green, these are a must for me to hold a somewhat competent short game together. My short game can be good , but lose it quickly when off course and away from practice.

So that is going to be me till feb/march - then take on short game properly in march (pro and practice). The target is to get to 6 next year. A big ask considering I struggle off 10 now.

But aim high - end up in the middle.

    I decided , I have to try improve - not happy hitting 82, 83 , 90, 84, 81. Want to be a 70 man more often.

The game we love , and drives us nuts, and gives us great joy all at once.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,726 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

Driving had improved dramatically (big slice/dribble etc) with 9/10 shots going where I want and with a new secondhand R9 I'm getting better average distances.

PW is a completely different story. Going through a phase where I can't remember how to hit it right. More golf and range with only a pw I think.

A sideways season of scoring now at an end & to the drawing board.

Out for my first lesson of the winter on Wednesday & there is a long way to go.

Had an old habit of letting my left knee collapse on my back swing. In order to counter this I'd made a conscious effort to brace my knee. Unfortunately the result of this was shifting too much of my weight at address on the left side. I was creating massive lag,but not necessarily getting the hands back in time unless my timing was bang on. Swing path down & position at top is actually pretty solid according to the pro but wasnt seeing those results as my turn was too far ahead of my hands which was leaving clubface open a lot at impact.

So 1st steps to the new me:
Narrow my stance (was way too wide)
Move ball back a little in stance ( too far forward)
Focus on weight more neutral at address

    Fun times ahead!!

Very happy with it at the moment (touch wood :D )

Have been working on a controllable fade off the tee so I can aim away from trouble and bring ball back to fairway. Worst case scenario is I end up in a not great spot as opposed to OOB or lost ball and its working well so far

Irons are good with my "big miss" being left.

I have developed a dependable chip with my SW that works well. If I have a lot of green I'll get it rolling.

Putting is pretty good too. Averaging around 30 for last 4/5 rounds

Have 3 lessons prepaid so will be working on why my iron miss is left and we'll see after that

All in all happy camper....though that can change quickly as I well know  :D

So 2 lessons down - messing with putting.

The lessons are going well - i seem to be able to change swing this time much easier than last. But I'm in no way making a correlation between the way I played today and the lessons - just a day when I went out and creamed it for 9 holes in a 4 club wind (on 5 of the holes)

    39 strokes (4 over)
    5 GIR
    18 putts (1 3 putt from 80 feet)

Two best shots in a row this year on index 1 - Drive and 4 iron just off green ( 460 yards into wind) Of course didn't get up and down (lol) - havent hit a 4 iron off the deck like that in ages. better position to release the lower irons - you are at nothing when OTT on a 4 iron. But again - with a better short game would have been level today , no problem.

Anyway made up - can't make sense of this game anymore - I looked out this morning and seen wind and went - is it worth it - great day on the course - but real work ruins golf - only 9.

So very busy with my golf last few weeks - strange time of year - but you just got to go with it when you have the time. The course is in fantastic condition, play as you lie still - fairways will be out of service soon I'd say - very quiet and gives you the freedom to get out quick 9 and home in 2 hours.

So hitting many many balls - too many. Have been using putting mat and working on a few things I've studied.

As evening light is now gone - I go out for 9 and test myself - to see how the changes are going - then a lesson every about 2 weeks. Too much time at range - thinking about injuries here. Sometimes just get 50 and work hard on sequence.

    What a mental 9 today.

Two bladed shots - still haven't got shoulder turn and right leg brace right yet, also transition unpredictable. But when right , much easier strike and distance , much more within myself , connected and better release , less blocks and slices.

Was thinking recently - how do I never have a 6 inch tap in for Birdie ? - they are the ones you want when your 6 foot putts are a bit ropey. Anyway after par , double (topped S/W), par, start - on 4 from 147 yard out was between 9 and 8 iron - said go easy and release the 8 , one bounce 2 yards out from hole (pitchmark) and in. I was laughing, the last time I did that was when I was in America as a 21 year old - flashback. So 2nd eagle this year. :)

First time I used Wilson soft ball , so much for prov 1 :D (joking)

Then putted from off the green on 8 and made a 50 foot putt on last for birdie too - mad day. Had a feeling last one would go in as it was one of those days.

On Golfshot I've never seen Blue , Black, Yellow, Green and Red on nine holes - so great laugh. I just want a normal life of golf at some stage - not so up and down. But will get there. Big plans still :P

    100 % fairways
    33 % GIR
    11 putts
    37 (+2)

New secret to low putts - do not hit greens (just off edge) or hole from miles out.
