So I thought I'd get this up as I am heading away and won't get it done later! How many of these can you hit this year? Going to leave the marathons on the shelf and focus on the shorter distances for a while? This challenge is for both men and women who want to try and improve their performances with some arbitrary time goals.

PLEASE give some info on the race/your training/how you felt/next target etc when posting your times, so we don't end up with a boring thread of tables.

    The times are:

    400m - 1 minute
    800m- 150 seconds
    1 mile - 5 mins
    3k - 10 mins
    5k - 20 mins
    5miles - 30 mins
    10k - 40 mins
    10miles - 1 hour
    Half Marathon - 90 mins
    Marathon - 3 hours.

First one down (of about 3). A nice PB in the 800m on the indoor track in Athlone. Faster than all outdoor runs I've ever done. Pacing was a bit insane in hindsight with a 29/30 first 200m. Will definitely take this result at this time of the year, with a fair few 400m races to come. My next 800m will not be until outdoors, and only if scheduling allows.

Time to kick off attempt number 3 and try to follow in HappyGoose's footsteps. Happy enough with my time in the Raheny 5 as I ran pretty well, and almost hit a perfect royal flush (each split faster). A soft PB, as I didn't run a 5 mile last year, but still, glad to be running a decent enough time during my base building phase.

My first entry onto the table this year. I managed 5/10 last year. I'm hoping I can add the 10 mile time this year and maybe even some of the shorter ones that I've never attempted before. It would be exciting to have a go at all ten of them, even if I was to fall short trying.

First 400m race indoors ever at the Welsh Championships in Cardiff. Not a quick one, but while Athlone is considered one of Europe's quickest, the one in Cardiff must be on the complete other end of the spectrum. Bends twice as tight as those in Athlone. Good experience though, with a few bizarre moments. I anticipate much faster to come.

5k last weekend in Wexford - hoping to knock off the 10 mile tomorrow in Dungarvan. Plan to run the 400 a couple of times this year but maybe out of my reach as a tad too short...time will tell!

Enjoyable run around Hartstown Parkrun, to mark the end of a long, hard month of base-building, working long hours, and eating/drinking healthy (though the work and base-building continues). A good fast course and on a less windy day, the course record (16:32) should be handy enough for a few runners around here to target for the craic. Hope to take 80 seconds off that time, in the next few months.

Not the greatest time for me but it gets me on the board. I did this at the Kilkenny Parkrun yesterday morning.

Last year I did the 5km, 10km, 1/2 marathon and marathon within the specified times - I'd love to add the 5 mile this year but I need a lot of improvement to get there.

800m under 150sec should be within my reach but I never did a track race before so that would be an experience!

If you were able to run a sub 3 marathon, I doubt you need much (if any) improvement to run a sub 30 5 mile.

Dungarvan10 ticked the box for the 10 mile target today. Really fair course and the weather held up well, managed a decent PB which sets me up well for the rest of the year. Ennisocrthy 10k next weekend and then a bit of a break from racing.

Cheers Yaboya and I'd think that would hold for 95%+ of the people but I don't think I'd fall into that category. Compare to my sub-3 marathon, my times at the shorter distance are not were most people expect them to be. I never ran a sub-39min 10km, my PB for 10mi is 65:45, my PB for 1/2 marathon is 84m 23s. Funny enough, my 5k is probably the most impressive time, 18m20s.

I ran a 5mi race on New Year's day at 31m37s in Bandon (and I couldn't really blame much of it on the fanfare of NY's Eve) so I know I have a good bit to go. Ballycotton will tell me where I'm at.

At least there are some low hanging PBs that I should be able to pick off in 2015!

I don't know. I feel I am a bit off running sub 30 but have run a sub 3. Perhaps its down to poor pacing.

    I agree, Vdot has a 29:59 5 mile as equivalent to a 2:56:01 marathon.
I know some people who can't even hold a 6 min/mile average for 5k who have broken 3hrs for a marathon.

I suppose that's the glory of it. If we were all exactly the same it would be boring. I must be better from 5 miles to Half. All of these point to a 'comfortable' sub 3. Unfortunately I'm not even close yet.

Then again, I am only 49 and a bit.

Would those people have trained specifically for a 5k / 5 mile race, or focused solely on longer endurance distances? So much of this running game is mental. If you convince yourself that 6 minute mile is some kind of impossible barrier, then it will become so. Nobody wants to train for 5k, because 'anyone can run 5k'. True glory appears to lie in the marathon distance (OMG - I'm beginning to sound like Chivito. :D).

No, it's more the case that some people seem to have more of a 'Diesel Engine'. Even McMilan says a 30 minute 5 mile is equivalent to a 2:56 marathon, so clearly a sub 30 minute 5 mile is a stronger relative performace to a sub 3 marathon. So I just think it's wrong to think that someone with a sub 3 marathon will automatically run a sub 30 5 mile...

I think if the Diesel Engines amongst us trained specifically for shorter distances they could use the enhanced speeds to run even faster marathons, whereas some people have all the speed they need so need to work on the engine if they want to run better relative times over longer distances.

The problem is that people look at Macmillan and and VDOT and expect results to fit the profile, even though they haven't done the training. When they dont achieve the results, they assume that they're better at a different discipline. For example, it would seem that I am a better marathon runner than a 5k runner. But the actual evidence is that I am a better 5k runner than I am a marathoner. Not saying that a sub 30 5 mile is easy, just that a sub-3 runner should give it a proper go. Not just rock up and expect success or failure. By the way, the sub-60 10 mile is still a lot harder than the sub 30 5 mile!

That's for sure :D. The sub 5 mile and sub 10 3k are also diffcult ones IMO...

A 0.93 second improvement from my 400m race in Cardiff last weekend, at yesterday's AAI Games in Athlone. Hard to know the exact indoor to outdoor conversion, but if it's 0.75 seconds for David Gillick then a figure of 0.9 for me would be a decent estimate. So that's probably equivalent to a 55.1 or 55.2 outdoors, which is very pleasing for this time of year, and not far off my outdoor PB shape. Hopefully faster to come in the coming weeks.

Funny enough back when I was a distance athlete, I ticked off the sub 60 10miles without too much sweat, but a sub 30 5mile always seemed like effort, my pb is just under 29mins, and far too many efforts where I came just short of sub 30. Nowadays I prb wouldn't even last 10miles ha, not to mind sub 60, but would be disappointed if I couldn't rock up and get 27 mins flat for 5miles if I wasn't having so much fun at the shorter stuff!

Enniscorthy 10k today. Tough enough course as there are a few drags/hills on it. Ended up running quite even splits but really went too hard in the 4-6k hilly section and couldn't push on for the last 2k which was flat to downhill...still v happy as a good PB. Great spread afterwards as usual by Slaney Olympic, this is a great value race for a tenner.

Long hard week of training, in my penultimate mileage peak week. I was hoping to run a little closer to my PB (33:36), but I was kind of fooling myself, as I tapered for the previous race, it was a much flatter Dunshaughlin, and there were lots of runners to chase, so I'll take it. Hope to give that time a good kickin' in a couple of months time.

You finished the 10k very strongly though - I was running with you until a little after the 6k mark and you pulled away from me after that - well done on a very solid time during peak mileage.
