Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Like the idea of dog unit jeep but don't get the reason for no light bar, I know Managment don't like the idea of them in estate cars why I'd never know works well in the uk

There is no issue with estates getting light bars.

I don't understand why the dog unit aren't in estates, surely they're the most suitable, large boot with room for two dog cages. Cheaper than a Pajero I'd bet too

They treat the dogs better than the mules.

But thats kind of my point, why are they buying pajeros when a focus estate or transit connect would do the job for less?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,818 ✭✭✭donvito99

The dogs are always out and about in Temple Bar. It's amazing to see the hard men sizing up Gardaí take off once a dog shows up.

Back in the days - Victor 3.3 / Granada L 2.8 (even Corolla DL ), purpose build cop cars that did the job, now it's alloys, etc etc - MORE waste  Has the Barrack Master unlimited resources to buy jeeps for dogs ?

Garda cars haven't exactly come on in leaps and bounds in the past 20 years, have they? Haha. Were there m/any unmarked units in the early 90s?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,195 ✭✭✭goldie fish

There was, but most of them were very old cast offs. In 94 we had a 88 Corolla unmarked, that was once marked. Ford Orions(Escort Saloons) were a plenty too, mostly 92 vintage. Sierra Saphires were mostly the preserve of Branch. A few Carina's also, the predecessor to the Avensis, and they were shyte. The Mondeo was introduced in 1994 and became pretty widespread, in all shapes and shades, including estates for radio workshops. (the folk who connected 2 way radio, lights and siren to car loom using insulation tape and chewing gum).
There was even a few unmarked motorbikes, usually retired VT500s with the holes where the flashers were still visible on the bodywork.
I remember the traffic Jeep Cherokees. Total waste of space. 4litre petrol, you'd need a towhitch for the fuel bowser. In pursuit, you'd see the onboard computer showing at best 6mpg. Traffic also had a few specials unmarked, like a 2.2L Camry or a 2.5 V6 Vectra. Policy decision got rid of most unmarked traffic cars. Tis all about Visible Deterrant Presence now.
Our Paddy wagon was a Hi-Ace. the change to transits was considered a huge improvment.
Worst of all was the dreaded fiesta van. I'd love to know what genuis thought that would make an ideal rural patrol car.

    I believe so, Pogan, yeah.

There was one car that had me thinking about it over and over. It looked completely unidentifiable. Now, I knew it was a Garda car by the way it was parked and that it was boxed in by three other Garda cars, but from taking a quick glance around it, I couldn't see any obvious signs at all.

Looked for lights on the front bumper (you know the really obvious ones), no luck. Couldn't see anything hidden behind the grill. Tax, NCT, etc. holder looked normal enough (though I didn't exactly give a mad long stare at it incase any of the Gardai thought I was up to something), nothing sitting on the dashboard (like a control unit or Garda hat :P ), no additional ariels (I know they've become pretty much extinct now, though) etc. really was stumped looking for a tell-tale sign. It was a 2012 reg, too, so I was even thinking maybe some poor git just really did get unlucky and got boxed in by 3 Garda cars of the same make. :P

Unfortunately, I'm not about to turn around and say "but then I noticed"... I really have nothing. I'm almost annoyed at myself.

More annoying is that Drogheda still hasn't got a fancy new 12/131 car to photograph. As far as I know, the Avensis is on it's last legs, so I'm anticipating a new Focus or Connect at some point (Focus, hopefully. Much as I'd like to shoot a new Connect, I think the Focus is clearly the more suitable vehicle for Drogheda).

Can anyone tell me what this is in the windscreen of the black Mondeo? Blue LED(s) I'm guessing?

(Image is a bit big, so linking instead of posting).

That dark blue Mondeo is in some nick. I know they don't make that model anymore but you'd nearly swear it is a new motor.

DoneDeal? That actually for sale at the moment?

If so, do you have a link? Anything more than €20 would be out of my budget, but I would be curious to see what it's going for and what they have to say about it :)

The rotating beacons cost £40 each back in the day, while the strobes that were stuck on the "lollipop stick" on a motorcycle were £200.

Guess what my dissertation was on?

From Capri, in photo thread: Bound to happen - likely Avensis was using probably Luas tracks and didn't stop for (---) Luas stop light - nearly had one myself at Beresford Pl / Abbey st , Transit drove straight thru (---) Luas stop light - I had the green light !mad.png
Think I'll have to get my dash cam, as 'accidents happen' but WHO'll get the blame ???

That's possible, but could have been a UT, or the other vehicle may have broke the lights etc. etc.

Lets hope the members are okay.

One vehicle was overturned on the tracks just outside the Abbey Theatre and a marked garda car was also involved in the incident. The Luas was not involved.

No was serious injured. Thank god
