Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Me too!!! I'm lost without it!

I parked it outside the Abbey and locked it to one of the bike rails and was gone for less than a half hour. Mine seemed to have been the only one taken, it is only about a month old.

I'm presuming they cut through it as I had secured it to the rail although the lock was gone too.

They always take the lock (chain or whatever you have used to lock your bike) to prevent identification of tools which they use.
It was the same M.O. in my case.

    My mate's bike was nicked.

It's a silver 2008 Specialised Rockhopper. Odd tyres. Thieves cut through 2 wire locks and a bike rack to get it. It may still have 2 D locks attached.

I'd appreciate a PM if anyone sees such a bike offered for sale.

    Thanks.

Mi bike got stolen at Fitzwilliam Point Building the parking lot @ Fitzwilliam Quay in Ringsend. If anyone get's to see it I would be greatly appreciated. I reported it to Gardai and the bike was locked with a quality Abus U lock that was cutted and the lock was taken as well.

Interesting video, which shows crime in London.

    part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=rhPzF-hyC7Q&NR=1

It seems that only built in GPS inside the frame would be perfect solution.
Hopefully manufacturers will do something like this.

It needs a couple of good, well-publicised stings by the Gardaí to catch bike thieves in the act (preferably loading up vans full of bikes). Do the Guards realise how extremely well this would play in their PR? People *love* it when bike thieves are caught.

Trek 7.3FX Disc Mens 22.5” frame
    Silver in colour
    S/N WTU283C0296F
Time late Saturday night 22nd to early Sunday morning 23rd July – before lunch time anyway.
Stock other than I changed the pedals for aluminium ones and the bike has skinny removeable black mud guards held in place with a cable ties. There is also a clear plastic covering on the rear of the frame to project paintwork, which I never removed.

The bike was stolen form the underground car park where I live in Stillorgan. It was locked to a secure railing using a Kryptonite New York, An Onguard Mastiff 10mm chain and a smaller Arbus chain – yes 3 locks! They cut through them with an angle grinder or similar cutting tool the locks were taken as well but I found the links they cut from the chains that’s how I know how they cut through them.

    Any information appreciated.

Holy cow ! I didn't think that thieves would go to that level of effort. That's rough going, you did everything right and still it got robbed.

Yeah they got a few bikes in one go I'd say they had it cased out and knew exactly what they were looking for my mountain bike was also locked to the Trek and they left it as it has little resale value.

    Bianchi CAMALEONTE 1
    Only 9 months old
Hubbys bike stolen from office underground office carpark near peppercanister church
Its dark grey in colour and the most distinguishing feature would be that it had a child seat mounted at rear (co-pilot limo) http://www.amazon.com/CoPilot-Limo-Bicycle-Child-Seat/dp/B000G1YO2I minus the orange insert, and fairly worn looking with loads of road grit all over, even if the child seat is removed it is mounted on a carrier so the carrier could still be on the bike and has a bracket mounted on crossbar for a wee-ride child seat. http://www.amazon.com/WeeRide-Mounting-Center-Child-Carrier/dp/B000I43RVW
Gutted as in Oct his Trek 7.5 was stolen from garden shed.. replacing bikes is an expensive hobby

    Hi all,

I had my brand new bike stolen tonight from in front of the AIB on Capel Street. It was a Lapierre Shaper 100 and was locked to the bike rail (through both wheels and around the frame with a top of the range lock!)

Frame number of the bike is SW11J4291 and it is security marked with unique code: IEAA0460.

In the rare chance that anyone sees it, please can you report it to Bridewell Garda Station (where I've reported the theft).

    Thanks a million.

PS the pic is of the bike locked up at work, not in town.

Was it a U-lock with an extender cable going through the front wheels? What was actually locked to the stand?

Has a guy in work telling me he had a chain, coil lock and U-lock and all 3 were cut :/

    /

It was. Locked through both of the wheels, around the frame and around the bike stand. Only had it two weeks.

It's insured, but I'm still gutted. With the excess etc, I'll still have to fork out again :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,017 ✭✭✭Crow92

It's very sickening =/ What I was getting at was wether the U-lock was attached to the stand or if the coil was what had it connected to the stand.

Had my speakers and small waterproof bag behind the stem stolen off my kaffenback besides Penny's just off O'connell street, they're not worth much at all and always left them on the bike, just took out the mp3 player and contents but serves me a lesson oh becoming too complacent =/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,937 ✭✭✭De Bhál

That's Prince's street is it beside Penny's where the bike stands are. Scobe central around there.
In fact I would never park a bike on or on any of the streets off O'Connell street. I had a locked bike stolen at the top of the street at the bike stand around 10yrs ago.
Passing down the street a few times I've seen young lads moving through the bike stands checking locks on bikes.

This whole thread sickens me. I cannot believe the amount of bikes robbed.

Probably a naive question but where do they all go??

Another naive question: what are the gardai doing about bike thefts?

Bike stealing is a gateway to bigger crimes - even if the gardai don't think stealing property worth hundreds of euro is important.

There are cameras all over O'Connell Street, staffed by gardai in the station there - are they watching the thieves and doing nothing? Surely they're not powerless.

When did you last hear of a bike thief or a ring of bike thieves being brought to court?

I bet they sell these bikes on the streets for 20% of actual value. Also these bikes might be 500km away within 24 hours since they were stolen.

I reckon the majority of bikes are brought to Britain and sold there, especially unique/high end bikes. Bike thieves know its risky business trying to offload that stuff in Ireland, the cycling community is fairly tight knit and chances are somebody will recognise it!

I really hope that GPS units will be mounted on production site somewhere deep in the frame so it won't be possible to power off them.
Our two bikes were stolen few years ago from the basement even though we were living in very secure area i.e. gated entry, CCTV everywhere, intercom, limited access to the building (fob devices). You're not secure if someone really want to steal your bike. Eventually you'll be assaulted while driving.

That's a fair assumption alright but who're buying these stolen bikes. Bike shops?

The fact I say a guard before I locked the bike and after I came back to it standing beside the gpo facing the bikes had me thinking it'll be grand to leave it. They won't get the bike though :D they can have it if they cut through the 2 U locks I use :P

My bike got 'briefly' stolen today. I was in getting some plants for the garden in Woodies in Blanchardstown (next to TK Max/Lifestyle) and locked my bike in the bicycle racks at the end. I was in there about ten minuites and bought a few plants which I placed in a box.

As I was walking in the direction of the bicycle rack I saw a chap with a black hoodie and black bag walk away with my bike around the corner. I ran towards the racks and turned the corner and there he was with another white bike and my bike as if he was about to cycle off with the two.

I looked at him and he said "is that your bike"? and I said "yeh". He then said "it was already unlocked". After which I took my bike back and he cycled off. It was lashing rain at the time and we were under the shelter.

If I had been a minute late my T30 would have been gone. The cheap cable lock was cut cleanly off and left on the rack.

Only for I was carrying a box I probably would have hit him one. I have to get a new lock and thank goodness thats all I have to get.

Not so for the owner of the other bike he took (unless that was one he'd bought, of course). Did you go to security and ask them to print off his picture from their CCTV and keep an eye out for him?

The information supplied to the Gardai by people reporting stolen bikes tends to be very poor. No serial numbers, don't even know what the make of the bike was, no pictures etc.
Thousands of bikes are recovered by gardai every year but reuniting them with their owners is the extremely difficult part.

Stolen from shed in back garden in Sandyford between 12 last night and 6 this morning:

    TnJBY.jpg

    Giant SCR 2007, large.
Upgraded with Aksium wheels, new Tiagra shifters and RD, 105 FD. Gatorskin tyres, black and red Charge plug saddle. Vision Trimax aeorbars. Look bar tape and 2x Tacx tao bottle holders.

    GGWv5.jpg

Forme Raid, xsmall frame, 15". Perfect condition. White topeak bottle holder.

    BcNYN.jpg

Cannondale M800 mtb. Not actual one in picture but identical except black brake calipers and seatpost clamp. 7 speed deore LX. No FD. 17" frame.

Only got our dog put down during the week - I guess it shows what an effective deterrent they are.

I know the chances of getting them back are minimal, but I'd really appreciate if people could keep an eye out for them.

My 11 year old had his nearly new bmx, dark orange colour lifted from the cove in dungarvan four weeks ago. Gardi notified and have been helpful but the bmx has not turned up.
However is it not time for cyclist to turn on the thieves, surely to god we have had enough of the scum who unfortunately live on the same planet.
Anyone who knows about scumbags lets mount a campaign with the Gardi, times must change

Good news for a change! A heartfelt thanks to my very alert neighbour who spotted my post yesterday, noticed some questionable sorts trying to sell the bike beside the local shopping centre, put two and two together, and called in to let me know!

Quick phonecall to local gardaí later, three %&*("£$ arrested, one still in custody as of this morning, and my son's bike recovered!!

Still on the lookout for the other two bikes, but the smile on jnr's face this morning made the loss a lot more bearable!!:D

I had my Kona Unit 29er Single Speed stolen last night (11th Aug) from my shed in Blackrock. I have never seen another orange 29er single speed in Ireland so this will be quite hard for them to pass on.

It was a 16inch frame with, Rockshock Reba Forks and Hope Disk Brakes and Maxxis Ignitor tires.

If you see or hear anything please contact the garda or me.

If you could pass this info around I would be greatfull as I would really like my bike back.

    Cheers

    Where and how?
To close the story: the bike has been sold through a shop in <snip>. The original owner was there the next day after he lost the bike and left some photos + detailed description how to recognise the bike (I think it was modified a bit). It didn't make any difference to the shop... some time later they bought and later sold the bike

Probably a naive question but where do they all go??

That's what I'd like to know as well. Are most bikes robbed for kicks, or for cash? If so, where are they fencing these bikes?

    P.

I've edited and deleted a number of posts. Suggesting an identifiable shop may be involved in fencing stolen bikes is no different in principle to posting pictures of alleged bike thieves, which is not allowed under general Boards rules (please re-read post 1 if you wish to remind yourselves why)

Do not question this in-thread - that will result in cards and/or bans. If you have any questions or require further clarification, PM me

    Thanks
