    Galaga is just perfection.
It's one of those cabs I would love to own someday, along with Robotron

Anyone know what part I would need to order, to replace the potentiometer in my Atari Super Pong console?
The Left player control is a bit loopy at one extreme and makes the game unbalanced.
I'm assuming that it should be an easy repair, once I can locate a replacement or compatible part.

Should just need a new potentiometer fitted, the carbon tracks in the pots wear out over time.
You'll need to find out the resistance of the old one first, the pot cases are usually marked with the values but in my experience (with guitar pots) the markings are always soldered over :(

You can measure the resistance of the good one anyway if the markings are gone (measuring the resistance across the two outer connections). Then its a case of desoldering the old one and dropping in the new one, only difficulty might be getting one with the same shaft size and spindle type.

This one is a 1/4" with D type spindle for example.. Oh and make sure of get a 'linear' type and not 'log'.

I'll see if I can find a repair log online for the machine, it should give me direction on the right component and I'll pick it up.
On a brighter note, these machines should be easy enough to repair... I hope....

Actually, this suggests that I could rehabilitate the pot with some contact cleaner... might try that before I try surgery

Most likely cheaper and easier to just replace the potentiometer - just make sure you get the correct type/mount etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,718 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

If you are going to the hassle of removing and opening it up to clean then just replace it. I new pot will probably cost less then a can of decent switch cleaner anyways :)

You too can enjoy Bulletin Board Systems on systems and at the (slow baud) speeds that only your 80's/90's (rich) cousins could! :)

Most BBSs are online via Telnet now right? I believe the original reason for this was to get old serial printers/devices accessible on wifi

The main reason for it is to bypass the need for dial up modems, mainly on old devices.
What do you do with a device that has no ethernet port?

Actually in that pic you can see how bad the convergence is in the bottom right,
I have some strips too try get it better.
It also needs to be degaused

fixed the last one of those Galaga boards I got broken off ebay a while back.
This one took a bit more work but all faults were "obvious" really.
2 custom chips had broken legs but were still working fine so I managed to re sodder the legs on both.
    One socketed 74LS386 was missing.
One resistor array had snapped so I just repaired the legs.
One bad RAM replaced (identified by self test).
A missing eprom so I reprogramed one
and 1 Prom reprogramed by a generous member on UK-VAC
    ... pfeww

been on a roll with these.
Kung Fu Master bootleg repaired. It was covered in dirt and dust so I gave it a nice wash too :)
It had exploded caps in a few places and the white board custom replacemt chips on the bottom left had cold sodder everywhere and bad sockets. Replaced them and reflowed the sodder . All working now :)
