Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Having it poll for USSD's every few mins seems quite intensive. I know the guy behind Cabbage texter has a way (and open source code) to use the webtexts on all of the phone sites, I'm sure with some modification it would be possible to pull the remaining services data.
I don't think any networks in Ireland allow you to check your texts/minutes/data balance using a USSD code anyway!

I think it's fair enough to explore scraped information for free apps, within reason.

Even Cabbage is freely discussed on Talk2O2 - where they have the most to lose. As hobbyists, discussing things with content providers is sometimes out of the question because they can't extend guarantees to third party developers - but thankfully, working in this grey area is tolerated and helps everyone (including content providers).

There are no paid apps in Ireland available yet, (we can't even have a checkout seller's account) so that whole issue of scraping content and selling the scraper is yet to come.

Should be relatively straight forward yeah but I have neither the time nor the inclination to do it at the moment :D

Anyone who wants a leg up is welcome to the source code and help with the scripts that you can get here: http://www.cabbagetexter.com/source.php

If you guys want to integrate your apps with Layar let me know. I can help out as I've my own framework for it.

Im not sure what you mean by integrate apps with layar, might need an extra bit of explanation.

Nmesica has been onto me and is looking into the possibility of polling wordpress's XML-RPC to allow downloading of the articles by category and simple viewing of pages and commenting through registering/login which all should be possible through the XML-RPC of wordpress. Im currently trying to figure out the Android SDK's etc and try remember Java (its been 4 years)

If you think it might be useful to create a layar out of exsisting content on your site. It'd almost be like creating a mini app as layar has it's own directory/store.
I have experience making a few layars if you wanted any help or have questions.

This is one of the few things that's relevant countrywide, not on google maps and is a hassle to look up on the web that's useful, and in particular useful with GPS. However I'm finding trouble getting a complete list of locations. This is one of this situations hinted to above that our entitlement to information from local authorities comes in.

Oh Layar the augmented reality app??? if so ive not really used that app, not sure how you can link wordpress into what it does

Interesting thread guys. I'll look into scraping data from mymeteor in the app, that would be something I could use myself.

Yup layar the augmented reality browser.
Maybe if each of the gig venues has co-ords, it could be used to create a map/Layar to finds where and what gigs are on near users.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,182 ✭✭✭dionsiseire

well i tag each news post with a tag of the venue name, so a tag search for the venue name would return in order of news posted (so the newest = most relevant) for that venue

    if thats any use

I've started work on an app for Three to present the remaining units/ minutes/ texts as a widget. My solution is not to poll but to hook in events on the call-end / text send / data connection close to get the updated information then.

The key problem is that it's straight forward to get the info from MY3 provided you are not on wifi. If on Wifi then a secure login needs to be done to the public web site to extract the same info and I couldn't be bothered with the hassle. Cabbage must follow a similar process to send texts but I'm not into PHP.

One app I would love to see would be an M50 toll app that can do various different things like enter a trip taken on the toll (M50)

For me I get billed monthly from E-flow and all I can do is say yeah those transactions must be right, i'd love an app that says i've spent €X so for this month on tolls and maybe include a reminder for those that go through and pay the next day and maybe a different reminder for those that have a tag that their balance is hitting near €12 (the min allowed in a/c before eflow come knocking at your bank)

Maybe even include a function that detects if you're near the GPS co-ords of the barrier and ask if you have made a trip through the toll too and if so add it to your total for the month

Possibly quite difficult but would be a class app!

Oh and it could be used not just for M50 but for other tolls too M1, new M3, etc!

That functionality already exists in Android, once the voice library is installed. (It's missing from some Hero's and Desire but there are workarounds)
Handsent SMS has an option to dictate SMS'

For typing out texts it doesn't work well enough to be useful. For doing a search or just using google translate e.t.c. it works perfectly.

That can be done already, it's present on the Nexus one by default and can be enabled on any HTC android phone (As far as I know anyway). The only problem is that it simply isn't good enough for typing out texts unless you have an american accent or a particularly neutral accent.

Cabbage doesn't access my3 at all, the php script accesses webtext.three.ie. The PHP cURL library handles https all on its own, I don't need to do anything differently but the three webtext facility actually isn't secure at all, it's all done over http

An app of Irish pubs and bars, and allows users to vote for the bar and pub, as well as it's location in the country.

The toll website is an absolute bastard and won't allow mobile user agents (or at least not until recently). Obviously bypassing that isn't difficult. Having said that making it completely independent of the toll website, by just entering how you normally pay for it and recording how many times you pass the toll area per month (with GPS) might work - though I don't drive past those much so I'm a little unclear on how useful that would be.

bigcon - i might give that sort of app a go.

shouldnt be too hard - but wait for a big fail.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rC5IdZAL3oo

Might find an app like that and edit in something suitable to gaa - will have to contact that developer so i will be able to start and finish it when i get my desire phone.

The biggest problem is finding a reliable source for scores. There's nowhere that keeps them properly updated

Aertel is by far the best site for gaa scores as it is reasonably up to date. Just use jaertel on your phone.

ye - bigcon and others were looking for a score-keeping app not a score getting app.

The internet is your score getting app!

As a keen angler it would be nice to have an app that would tell the tide times around the Irish coast. Something similar to the tide times on the Irish Times website http://www.irishtimes.com/weather/tides.html

For that we'd need every bus to have GPS(which I think is piloted in dublin at the moment) and for them to allow external devs access to this....I think youll be waiting a while

    I have another request...

Since your android knows where you are at all times, how about an app that alerts you when you are driving through one of the guards speed collision zones and warns you of the correct speed limit.

They are all listed here - http://garda.ie/Documents/User/List%20of%20Collision%20Prone%20Zones.pdf and judging from a news article in the independent a few weeks ago you could see private speed detection gatso vans parked randomly in these spots by October - http://www.independent.ie/national-news/private-speed-cameras-to-target-drivers-after-dark-2202024.html

I'll like to have a go at this, I fancy trying out an app that uses google maps,

Is there a formula of some sort to convert to and from latitude and longitude or is it more complicated then that?

Im not sure is there a simple formula. I was looking for one a while back and couldnt find one. You might need to contact OSI and see what they say.

    Actually try here - http://www.qgsl.com/?product=gridinquest/
its a good start but i think they want you to buy the software

or even if you could use this converter - http://www.osi.ie/calculators/converter_index.asp

    Hey,

Given the auld hayfever has returned in the last week or 2, a pollen count indicator would be very handy, you could scrape the info from here
    http://www.met.ie/forecasts/pollen.asp

... and have a traffic light widget on on of the home screens that changes according to the current/forecasted pollen count (Red for high, Green for low).

It would be useful to know weather or not to take the medication in the mornings or not.

    Go Team.

Ps: I might get up of my arse and do this app myself, if anyone is interested in collaborating, drop me a pm.
