Larf at the boardsies claiming that the 'Ocean race crowd are better than the race ones', tonight was a fu(king disgrace from what I and my friends from elsewhere up for it saw.

What happened? FWIW I was going to head for a pint with a few friends on my way home after Dara. It was fairly wedged down by McDonaghs. One of the lads was in The House Hotel but the place was jammers so I gave it a miss as I had photographic equipment in my backpack and I didn't fancy it getting damaged or worse, nicked. The crowd were in good enough spirits at that stage though and the atmosphere was good. All I saw was one knacker and his skank in tow barging and shoving his way through the crowd because, obviously some more cans of Dutch Gold were needed ASAP!

I've no doubt with such a large crowd there were. Few incidents before the night was done. There were a few assholes out and about but they weren't doing any harm to anybody else at that stage.

Today is children's day at South Park, loads of free stuff including the fire brigade allowing kids to inspect a fire engine..

We went through the Spanish Arch and down long walk and there were a lot of very drunk youngsters on show, pi..ed out of their minds lot of Garda there also. Is it me or is the crowd smaller than 2009, there was not the huge crowds associated with the last Volvo, I spoke to a guy seling food and he said so far its not very busy. I looked across at the swamp and it looked very quite, maybe not a good idea to seperate the event to different areas.

Maverick was all I wanted and more :D He was amazing apart from his last song and a couple of scum at the front started a pit to a song that was far too slow to start moshing at. Couple of them started pushing a couple of girls I knew which pissed me off so had to get involved, not cool brah. Overall though quality night from everyone who performed

I was standing beside the younglads and was so tempted to crack one of them in the back of the head with my elbow!

You should of tbh, no different to what they were doing to each other. Had a friend of mine who is rather on the tall side have a chat with a couple of them ;) they were only in the middle of there teens I'd say.
I was on the right hand side of it (near the exit) and had to basically drag one the girls off the ground where a couple of them had knocked her over and basically stood on her. It's a shame I had to be looking after friends rather than enjoying the last 2 songs but ah well, still enjoyed it

Had a very enjoyable night last night down the docks.

It was my first time seeing/hearing The Kanyu Tree, and they were simply amazing in my opinion.

Maverick Sabre was only okay, but then again I am not a fan of that genre music but there was a good crowd there, drinks were flowing and there was no trouble from what I could see. So it was a great night!

Headed to a rammed Monroes afterwards and saw The Amazing Apples, and they were excellent also!

Feeling the worst for it today but I hope to recover in time for Tuesday :)

I had brought in a few cans of Heineken with me and one of the security guards said that i can't drink them out of the Coors Light plastic cups i got in the off licence, he told me just go buy one pint of heineken and reuse the heineken glass discreetly.

    Fair play to him.

Heineken is muck. It's a pity they get pride of place at so many gigs. I had some great craft beer over at he food pavilion, Creans, Hooker and Trouble Ale and Stout. It would be wonderful if consideration could be given to craft beer stands on the docks as well. There might be fewer sore heads this morning. Heino is full of chemicals. Always gives me a hell of a headache the day after :(.

What was disgraceful as a matter of interest, was on High St for a large part of the night and didnt notice too much out of the ordinary.
There's no reason it can't be both ordinary and disgraceful, to be fair.
It's the image that Galway goes for though, so I don't think the locals can claim to be too shocked.

Spent three hours in Salthill today after reading here and on the radio about a huge parade of sail with two hundred boats involved, I should have known better. They never came near Salthill at Blackrock where it was supposed to start and I counted 38 boats in total way out in the middle of the bay.

Why o why do they say things that never happen, I got drenched even went back to the car where Galway Bay FM announced the details of the parade which never happened.

Spoke to a guy at one of the food stalls and he said it was a disaster today for him, very few people around and yesterday was just average. The weather is the key to every outdoor event in this Country.

Lads what time did Maverick Sabre go on stage yesterday?

Might head in to see Ryan Sheridan tonight but when the weather is bad i don't wan't to be waiting ages beforehand

I had no problem with either. :)

Mind you, I didn't walk to or from the area (just in South Park, across the river and around the Docks) so I didn't get to experience the parking free-for-all, which may well have been as bad as happened in 2009.

I'd like to seem them sort out the pedestrian bottleneck on Merchant's Road. They seem to have switched off the signals on the Pelican Crossing.

Weather atrocious, but I enjoyed the Food Pavilion. And the paella stall, again. Also the Galway Baroque Singers, who were in good form despite the Arctic conditions.

Lots of people around, which suggest the crowds will be massive if the weather even half improves. Maybe the locals will try to emulate the foreign visitors, and wear waterproof gear when it rains...

In a Top Gear type challenge a Volvo XC60 car set off from the Lorient Race Village at precisely the same time as the boats for a road trip that will take them across France, England and Ireland to try to beat the boats to Galway.

    Details here.

You can follow the car tracker here and the boat tacker here.

Whoever loses buys a round of drinks for the winners.

The way the fleet tore out of Lorient today and with 66 sailors in the race Krantz and Dahlgren could face a large bar bill if they lose their bets.

    ;)

just back from Aprés Match myself. I got a comp ticket allicated to my work. It was a good show but there wasn't enough of the lads IMHO. They did bout 25 mins before the match, half time and then another 25 mins after. The global arena is class and I enjoyed the show but had I paid I'd not be as happy. I'd have liked to see more material.

Heading to the docks tomorrow night for Lizzy. What have main act stage imes been like so far?

I was out there in the bay today, and there were well over 100 boats making their way into the Docks - yachts, hookers, dinghies, motor boats ... . From where we were 'standing' it was quite impressive to see all this colourful convoy heading in the same direction, all sails out. :) The volume of boats moored in the Docks is a testament to the event ...

From a sailing point of view, the conditions were pretty good despite a few showers here and there. But from a spectators' point of view, it is a indeed pity that it was wet, rather cold and I am sure visibility was rather impaired too. :(

I hope the conditions will improve ... however, we should all make do with what we get ... as we cannot change it.

Enjoy the week - I know I am looking forward to the rest of the festivities ! :)

At 1 am the fleet have already covered over 200 of the 550 nautical miles to Galway and are due to round the Fastnet tomorrow morning before 8am. Live Tracker here (click 'LIVE' for latest posn.)

Three of the boats went through the notorious Raz du Sein, a narrow stretch of water located between the Isle du Sein and Brittany well known for its violent waves and sea currents. It was responsible for wrecking one of the ships on Wolfe Tone’s ill fated Expédition d'Irlande to Bantry Bay in December 1796, with the loss of 680 lives.

They got through safely and luckily did not meet awesome Raz weather like this.

There is extensive live coverage of this leg of the race on the Volvo Ocean Race Site, from 10:00am until 13:00 and from 19:00 until 22:00 tomorrow, with video calls to all the boats and live footage of any action onboard.

    Go to this page:

    http://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/racetracker/rdc.html

and in the line of icons across the top, there's a little globe with a plus or minus symbol on the far right, click that.

With that switched on it projects what will happen in the future with the boats, based on the weather etc. Just use the time slider at the bottom to see the predictions. Right now it's predicting an arrival of the first boats at about half two. (Times are in UTC, so you need to add an hour) I think it's a bit slow in Galway bay itself, so it might be a little earlier than that.

Yes there will be a final in port race. On Saturday, it's worth six points.

Groupama are 25 points ahead at the moment. If they finish above 5th place in this leg, they will have won the entire race. There are also prizes for the in port race series, and for just winning the in port race itself, so there is a point to it. If Groupama finish fifth or sixth in this leg and puma win the leg (very unlikely, but anything can happen) then the entire nine month, 39000 nautical mile journey around the world race will be decided by the in port race in Galway next Saturday. As it is second, third etc will probably be decided by the in port race.

This is actually the first time in the volvo race history it's been this close. Usually the whole race would have been won a leg or two ago.

    fastnet9.jpg

Winds have dropped a bit overnight so boats should round the Fastnet over the next hour... Leading 4 boats within 1.5 miles of one another in very tight racing.

VOR hoping to get a chopper up for the rounding, but dependent on 3G signal at the rock.

VOR now predicting a finish at 03:00 am in Galway tomorrow morning.

Any good boat trips that you could recommend happening during the race? I wouldn't mind going out for a look around and if I need to book for the weekend, I'd do it today.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,533 ✭✭✭the keen edge

Galway Bay Sailing Club Regatta 2012 is starting this afternoon.
There will be racing today, Wednesday and Thursday.

The first start gun is at 16:00 this afternoon, and I'd imagine that the start line will be a little out from Nimmo Pier.
There is almost 50 boats entered, all the competitive crews from GBSC and a number of high profile boats from visiting clubs. There are a couple 50ft+ yachts entered so should be an exciting event.

Pop down to the Docks around 3ish for a gander if you have any interest in sailing.

There is a small tent in the group of tents along the side of the harbour hotel and you can get info and book boat trips from there. There are different types of boat trips available and examples include a trip out to watch fireworks on Wed night and out to watch the racing next Sat.

A group of us did the rib trip yesterday which was great craic - 500 horse power, can do up to 60 mph though with us we did a max of 45 mph and that was plenty! €15 for 30 mins and €30 for an hour.

Boats have rounded the Fastnet and are now heading up the SW coast. Camper, Groupama and Telefonica are on AIS.

    http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?mmsi=512003181&centerx=-9.459105&centery=51.29276&zoom=10&type_color=9

Camper seem to have taken the lead from Telefonica.
