Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Would love to know a few people also going there before i head off.
Ah everyone always feels that way. You make friends online first and when you get there you make a million in the first day. You best friends rarely turn out to be the ones you met online. You'll be grand.

If you like I can put you in touch with one teacher there?

Hopefully that is the case BigStupidGuy but yes, I'd love to find out some thing about the school so if you could put me in touch with someone who works there that would be great!!

I was send the generic email about a month ago saying that my application meets their requirements and has been saved to their database but there are no vacancies to suit me. This was after a second skype interview. Do you guys think I should give up hope now because it's been so long :(

Hi Zb I had the same email - I would like to know soon as I'd like to make summer plans. I was thinking of emailing again? It can't hurt to show you're interested. I dunno!!!

I know but to be honest even if it's really short notice, it's fine. I just wanted to know how likely it is that they say yes, considering loads of people recently got an offer after waiting like us :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 25 jmurtagh3858

Hey guys, there are still some people who have been interviewed face to face and been sent the contract that still havent heard anything about a location or got any emails about an offer etc from recruitment! I was sent the generic/automated email too and was talking to a teacher that is in the uae teaching at the moment that was in our exact position this time last year and they got an email in July with an offer so I dont think we should give up hope yet! They're obviously interested in offering us a position as the email stated "once a position arises.."- its just a waiting game again!

Just wondering had anybody been offered Ruwais UAE for Sabis starting in August this year?? Got offered that today..

Hi orla, just wondering how you got on in ruwais? Got an offer for there yesterday! Not sure what i think?

PM me if you want more info about Ruwais, I worked there :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7 Rosesarered23

Hi! Just got placed in Ruwais. it wasnt a choice we put down at all. But im wondering did anyone else get placed there or what is it like? It seems very remote!

Hi Katie, just wondering did you do face to face interview or a second one online? I put that as my fourth choice as it looks like a cute little town but obviously prefer one of the bigger cities!

  • Registered Users Posts: 7 Rosesarered23

I did a face to face one in dublin. I woulda preferred a big city tbh. We didnt put ruwais dowb at all!

That's a shame, the way they described it to me was that it was up and coming so maybe it will be alright. Apparently it has a big mall just opened etc. I get it though I well will prefer to be offered a bigger city. Good luck whatever you decide. I also heard that after the year you can chose to be transferred to another school, which is what I would do if placed there and accepted it :)

Okay has anybody at all had an offer after having a second skype interview? whenever I email HR they seem positive as if I am still in with a chance, but it's unnerving that so many have had offers and there are a few of us still waiting :( is anyone else having a similar experience? I'm graduating next month from a psychology degree and I have little teaching experience, do you think this could be the reason why I haven't had an offer yet? Sorry for the rant guys just anxious! X

I have been offered a place in the same school. I don't know anything about it though so would appreciate any info if people have any.

Feeling a bit anxious about it all the more I deal with SABIS the more I see why people say they are not a good company to work for. I sent an email asking about accomodation and their reply was to say that will be organised when I get to Dubai. We were told in the interview that we could be living on the campus or about 30 mins from the school. The replies I have been getting through email have also been in broken English and can be hard to understand.

I am still waiting on my Garda clearance to send on to them.

Hey guys I put down as one of my choices to teach KG - what is involved with this... For example would you need to do everything with them like Math/English/music/PE(swimming) ???

I know a person teaching at the school and they said the accommodation is 20mins away. The area where you are accommodated is called Bur Dubai. Shes going back again next year and she advised me to go for it. So thats what im going too do. Nothing to lose in going for the year.

Yeah I reckon I will still go for it just nerves kicking in a I suppose.

Has anyone been sent any information on what curriculum they will be teaching? Have emailed them twice now asking for a syllabus but have not got word back.

Also has anyone sent on their documents to them via fedex or aramax? I was planning on just doing it by registered post with An Post Fedex is working out at €100 for an envelope.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 Clodagh91

Luke, I'm sending my documents next week and doing it with DHL. The company I am working for at the moment have an account with them so it's cheaper for me but €100 is crazy money to courier documents. See what DHL rates are.

I will have mine ready for sending next week. I got a quote for DHL for 80 euro still pretty expensive were you getting a better quote CLodagh?

    Are you going to Dubai?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17 Clodagh91

Really expensive, yeah!! Since I'm doing it on my companies account I'm getting a really good price, it's working out at around €25.

No, I'm going to Abu Dhabi.

KG teachers teach English (the alphabet basically) Maths (numbers, shapes and colours). there is music and PE but not in a serious way. You think of songs/games to play yourself with them. There is no swimming in KG. Its grand really.

Many school do swimming in KG but the PE teacher does it with them. The class teacher does have to get the kids changed before and after though.

KG this year has gotten a lot tougher for the kids this year, they now have 2 written tests every week and one computer test. English consists of teaching them to memorize a certain number of sentences per week, type them in a computer test (with absolutely no assistance) and then write the missing word in their written test.

Maths, on top of number, colour, shape etc involves mental maths where they basically have to memorize up to 30 sums a week and then write the answer in a timed, written test.

It's fine, I enjoy it but it definitely is not as easy as it was in previous years and it will only become more difficult as they experiment with different ways to test the kids. It is very tough on the kids with poor memory and attention.

BTW, we didn't find out what grades we were assigned until near the end of the first week of training.

    Hi guys,

I've been offered a job with SABIS in Dubai, Investment Park. When I signed my contract the interviewer said becauseI didnt have a teaching qualification I could only teach infants, is this KG or just above KG?

Also, when i got my degrees attested at the Dept of Foreign Affairs and Arab-Irish chamber it cost me a fortune!! Was this the same for everyone??

    Thanks x

    Hello,

I have been offered a place in DubaI but it looks like my garda vetting will be a long time yet. When they request police clearance I am assuming it is garda vetting.

Is any body else having a problem with this, is there anything I can do to speed up the process, I have spoken to people and they said it can take 6 months... there has to be another way?

Hey guys I am looking for advice on teaching in Dubai/UAE. I haven't applied for anything yet as I was hoping to get a job lined up here in Ireland. Despite a good cv and references, it's been 40 something Job applications and not a sniff of an interview or a reply from a school things are looking bleak for September. I don't think I can face another year of subbing and short term cover.

How should I go about applying for Sabbis? I am wary about websites promising the sun moon and stars and then taking advantage of you. Any advice people? Would be greatly appreciated!

Al Ain is actually about 2 and a half hours from Abu Dhabi I'm afraid :-/ I travelled between the two once or twice.

Lesson #1 on the Middle East: take everything your are told with a pinch of salt.

Most likely harvesting CVs should somebody pull out at the last minute.

I heard the other day that I'm going to Yas Island Abu Dhabi! anyone else in the same boat?

  • Registered Users Posts: 33 shell182

In my experience, people who get jobs with the older grades are ones who have degrees relevant to what they want to teach, so you'd need an English degree if you wanted to teach English to the higher grades.
They recruit specifically for higher grades so if you're offered a job, you will know what you're teaching and where. One of the maths teachers I know who teaches grade 11 and 12 had to do some tests before they got the job.

Have never heard of people moving up grades, generally SABIS like to keep you in the grades you're experienced in because they think they'll get better results.

Hey, any idea what tests they had to do for the maths jobs?

Anyone still waiting to hear from sabis? I got the email saying that my application was successful and was saved on their database but there was no open vacancies suitable for my profile, which was sent to me in April. Emailed them the other day and still waiting on a reply :/ Anyone else in the same boat? Whats the likelyhood of getting an offer? Getting more and more pesimistic about it

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 Liquidsnack

I received an offer from them a month ago now, I accepted but haven't heard anything from them yet. I assume they're just shoring a load of cvs for when people back out.

    Hey guys/girls,

I had my skype interview with SABIS last week and sent them my video cv and application form before that. I think it went fine. I had put down Doha as a 1st choice as I have a really god friend there and she loves it for the most part.

I got an email today asking if I would be interested in Muscat, Oman as they have no vacancies in Doha but have one there in my degree subjects. I replied in the positive. However, now I am questioning the authenticity of the 'vacancy' in Oman based on reading some of your posts about being led down the garden path by SABIS. I know that my friend applied in August 2013, was interviewed on the phone days later and hired within days. Apparently, they were desperate for an economics teacher and her degree is in economics. She hasn't had too many issues with the school but has warned me about the points system and the overcrowded classes and rigidity of the system. It doesn't bother me hugely as I am not a teacher in Ireland and am just looking to experience a different culture, travel in the region a good bit and save money. I believe this is achievable and of course, there are pros and cons to every situation.

Has anyone been hired for Muscat yet? If so in what subjects/grades? Any other information about Garda clearance and degree attestation in terms of hassle involved, cost and time taken would be appreciated. The friend has forgotten some of this now as her trip was organised in a bit of a flurry due to the sudden nature of her hiring by SABIS.

    Thanks ( :

    Hi Rags,

I accepted a place in Khalifa City in Abu Dhabi back in March - they got in contact with me in May asking to send over all relevant documents and I've only been able to send them off today!! However, one good thing is they asked initially to courier them but in the end they were happy for me to just scan them over - saving me a lot of money

I'd get my police clearance form sorted out now if i was you - good to have anyway in case you apply to any other teaching jobs. I actually just got a data protection form and they happily accepted that.

Sorting out my degree was the big effort - first i had to get in translated from Latin to English - I did this from the NUI website and it cost €50 for translation - then you need to get it authenticated bu the DFA which is €40 and the uae Embassy which was almost €150 and takes 6-7 working days if you go in in person.

altogether it was quite expensive and a hassle but i got there in the end. To top things off i just recently lost my passport (Just my luck) so am in the process of sorting that out now too.

In term of where you're going i can't really help there - to be completely honest all i can say is i wouldn't be too happy with that choice but that is just me. Don;t want to influence you're decision in going at all.

Hope this helps a few people :)

Thanks for the info. I am going to try and sort all the documents I need in the next few days but know it will probably take a few weeks to get Garda Clearance back and my translated degree will be 10 days apparently. That was handy that you didn't have to deliver them by courier as that would have been costly I imagine.

Oman definitely was not my first choice. I knew literally nothing about it until I went and looked it up online. It makes no odds really as I won't know anyone there anyway and would be the same for nearly all the other gulf schools except Doha. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Khalifa might be more cosmopolitan and livelier but there are still going to be restrictions in certain regards no matter where you go in the Middle East no matter what state it is. Some are worse than others apparently.

Do you know anyone else in Khalifa? Did you go to the UAE embassy in Dublin to get your degree stamped/attested? Thanks

    Hi guys,

Hope y'all are well? So I got my contract today and an offer of a teaching post in Muscat. I have 2 days to sign it. I have to go and get Garda clearance and my degree attested etc...

I was reading the contract there and the salary works out at 1900 euro per month. It mentions end of year service benefit at the end of the 1st year but doesn't state how much. There is no pay for July but there is in August (for teachers contracted for a 2nd year). Does anyone who has taught in SABIS know if a full salary is paid for the whole month of June and how much end of 1st year service benefits are?

It also mentions a bonus for the end of the 2nd year which seems to work out at about 5600 euro. This would be in addition to a 2nd year end of year service benefits amount but the amount is not specified.

My friend said she will be getting a 10,000 bonus shortly and she is at the end of her second year at the moment and returning next year. She also told me she got paid for the whole summer last year...perhaps she was referring to the end of year service benefits..If anyone could shed some light on this it would be great. I am trying to figure out how much I can save and will be coming out over a 2 year period.

FYI I am going to be teaching infants...not ideal I know but does salary vary according to what age group you get?

    Many thanks ( :
