Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Training class went brilliant tonight! Our walking on leash has come on a ton since last week, when she was still inclined to be lunging and bouncing a lot with all the excitement of the other doggies. She walked really calmly on a loose lead tonight. I was so pleased with her, and so was our trainer: that was the most excited I've seen her get about an improvement in one of her pupils :) I've given up trying to do any actual walking her on the lead, just doing the practising, and keeping it rewarding for her, and it is really paying off.

    Her other work is coming on very well too, but she was always good at the other things. Just for the lead thing she's been the class clown all along, the most impetuous and bouncy dog in the class. Well to be fair, there is only one other pup as young as she is, and Molly is one of those tiny model dogs, a cav/maltese cross, who is adorable, but quite a quiet little thing, apparently does not even chew things at home at all! The upside from our point of view is that Nyssa is much easier to get engaged with a toy with me than Molly is for her owner. I'm very pleased with Nyssa tonight anyway :D

    Sometimes I could just scream at people. I just saw a facebook page post about a 4 month old kitten that had gotten lost, thankfully he was found within a few hours, by someone who instantly put him on a free to good home site:eek: The kitten belongs to someone I refused our foster kitten to last year. I fecking knew she wouldn't have a clue how to look after it. By the looks of the pictures and what she said to me last year, the kitten is for her toddler daughter, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out for the kitten.

    It was only last week that I was trying to persuade someone else that 5 months old was too young to be letting a kitten out, I got a load of abuse for that effort. What pisses me off is that I can tell that the people who have those kittens wanted a pet for the kids and they decided on a kitten since house training and walking a puppy was too much of a hassle and they still believe you can dump a cat outdoors when you don't want it around and it'll look after itself.:mad:

    Aw, all the best with her. She does sound like a lot of fun, at the least :) And I think ditzy moments just go with being young really :p

    Oh, and tell me about strong personalities! We have certainly got one around here too. I think if you work with them, and get them so engaged they think you are the most exciting thing there is, those do turn out the most rewarding dogs to own, though. I hope both of ours do anyway :cool:

    Ouch, I can't believe those people either :mad: I must say you show admirable restraint. I don't think I'd manage much more than telling them their are any number of stuffed toys available for their small kids to play with, maybe call me in 10 years when their family is ready to give proper care to a live animal, and hang up! :rolleyes:

    I got a lovely new tug for Lucy since she doesn't really want treats at class. Quick 5 min session yesterday and with 20-30 seconds of tug between exercises... and the tug ripped!! Does that make it not fit for purpose?! I could understand if I'd let her run off and play with it but it was in my hand the whole time! :(

    In other news... I moved Bailey's crate a couple of weeks ago. He was unsettled with it under the window with fireworks etc going off so I moved it around from the end of the bed(where Lucy would sleep against it some times) to the side of the bed. Since I moved it he's jumping up on the bed beside Lucy at night for his treat and stays there for a few hours - I find this funny because he hasn't got on the bed at night since Lucy started sleeping on it. Now he's right beside me at night in the crate so I'm guessing he likes being near Lucy more than he makes out lol!!! Lucy is delighted with the new sleeping arrangements and will squeeze in as close as she can without crowding him and making him get up! :p

    I just came home to find Toby snoozing on the throw cushion from the back of the armchair he sleeps on, that's a first. It must've fallen down when he got up and I didn't know whether to put it back upright when he got up or to leave it alone in case he likes it like that now.:D

    Just posted on facebook asking if anyone could tell me where to buy raw chicken wings and got a lecture by PM telling me that dogs cannot digest chicken bones and they will stick in him and he'll need an expensive operation to get them removed. This from someone who was trying to sell docked Jack Russell puppies on facebook last year and deleted my comments on the post and blocked me for a while after it. :rolleyes:

    My friend has a FB page for baking/craft business and is always getting PMs like that. Like one time she had a photo of a loaf of bread and said for her there was nothing like real butter - she was reprimanded by PM saying people in her position shouldn't post stuff like that because it's unhealthy etc etc Now none of the PM's are from people who like her page so she thinks they're competitors! :rolleyes:

    Sometimes I wonder if Felix and Toby will ever trust each other, it's been over a year since Toby arrived. We came home one afternoon and he was asleep in the garden, no doubt he'd been around the area for a while and our other 2 would have been aware of him. He and Felix are so alike in many ways but Toby is very layed back and Felix is anxious around him, even though he never does anything to Felix, if anything it's Felix that harasses him. Still it's nothing like it used to be in terms of aggression, fighting and spraying, thankfully.

    I stayed on the sofa with the 2 of them on Monday night as the storm was making them a bit nervous. Felix was sprawled in his cat bed, oblivious to Toby and Toby had a good sprawl on the sofa, followed by lots of happy meeping while he rolled around on the floor on his back. Yet if I went to bed Toby would have gone straight out into the storm rather than stay down with Felix:confused:

    My dogs make me the happiest person I can be. My puppy comes to the toilet with me, lays in front of me with his head by my foot. It's getting to be a crime to go without him. He will stand and scratch the door if I lock him out.

    Both him and my other dog seem to think my "I love you" is reserved for them. I say it to them a lot, but rarely to my OH. I said it to him one night on the couch, both the dogs made a burst for the couch all excited. Clearly I had to be saying it to them cause I couldn't possibly love anyone else, right!! :D

    Don't take this the wrong way but speaking from experience you should be teaching the pup to be ok on his own and not so dependant on you. I made that mistake with Bailey (although not to the extreme of taking him to the loo :p) and we're not able to leave him home for more than an hour now - which took me MONTHS of work!

    It seems to be the week for pet fights. I woke up to the sound of screeching from the living room, Felix was attacking Toby and there was fur all over the floor. Toby's mouth is sore and he tries to eat then shakes his head and walks away from the food.:( I've got some metacam so I'll try and get some into him later, I've soaked some of his kibble in water so it's spongy and soft for him. Hopefully he won't need to go to the vet. Still, at least it's been 6 months since the last of these kind of fights between them.

    Argh. Baby due at the start of December so along with all the other advice people are offering up I'm getting loads of warnings about my boys. I left a house recently practically in tears over it. Apparently I'm fooling myself. So I wanted opinions.

    we have put a baby gate between kitchen and sitting room and have been teaching the dogs that their behaviour in the sitting room must be different to that in the kitchen. They must be calm and relaxed or they are gently removed from the room. This for the most part is working, although they occasionally forget themselves and try to initiate wrestling with my husband who also needs to learn the new rules ;)

    Both boys have learned that when I open a door they cannot go through until I say "ok".
    We are working hard on Mr Harleys selective hearing when it comes to getting off the couch.
    Couch is now by invitation only.
    I've been pulling back on the undivided attention they usually get so when I'm distracted by baby it won't feel like a huge change.
    We have an exercise plan in place for them which involves them getting one on one time with each of us. As well as a jog with their dad every evening.
    Their lead walking is vastly improved thanks to the wonderful Emmaline who is often recommended in the forum.

    I have no big introduction planned. Baby will do very little at the start so they will have time to get used to the noises and smells. i have bikkies stashed in the house and I'm randomly rewarding calm behaviour. I will continue to do this when baby is born but it won't be so random (calm when baby cries, calm when I'm holding baby etc).
    I have a rocking chair which will go into the corner next to the crib. We have both been practising being invisible while on the chair. We act as if we cannot see, hear or interact with the dogs while sitting in this particular chair in the hopes they will come to utterly ignore it and us when we are in it.
    Of course they will never be in a room unsupervised with baby in same room. As such their "go to the kitchen" command is now very well reinforced.

    I can't think of what else I need to do to stop people acting like I'm a fool who intends to hve the baby sleeping in a dog basket. Any suggestions of further steps would be appreciated.

    We work all day so he only gets to see me at night time. I don't mind if he's clingy because he hasn't got me all day. I'd take them to bed if the oh would allow it.

    +1 or it'll just give them more leeway to think they can say what they want? We have the same problem with one visitor who's basically a loose cannon - the dogs pick up on his negative energy and then the tension from us waiting for him to go mad and they end up going bananas. They're either crated, taken out or left on their leads when he arrives and most definitely never left alone with this person.

    Just this week - "I can't do this when I have a dog GROWLING at me" - Lucy was woo-wooing which he knows well is not growling and is something she's always done which we love! :rolleyes::mad: FO then out of THEIR house is what I'd love to say lol :pac:

    My OHs brother has this pain in the hole of a girlfriend, she started that craic too "oh I'm frightened", I saw her throw a kick at one of ours when she got out of the car. I've told her straight up, they live here you don't. The OHs mother did intervene, but if it comes down to the dogs being put outside or her ****ing off with herself, she'll be going every time.

    Hehe good one!! You're braver than me!

    Now I've no proof.. but one evening I was taking baby Bailey to the vet for his KC shot and when the vet went near him he cowered :( That tool had been in the house that day and my mum went out to the garden for a second - she heard a bang and when she came in Bailey was over the other side of the room lying down. She asked what happened and he mumbled something about him falling. That's one of only 2 things I can think of that would be possible 'trauma' to his legs - he started having problems a week or so after that :( (The surgeon said it could have been genetic or trauma but no way of telling)

    I live at home so I don't really have a say in who comes and goes and unless I win the lotto that's not going to change any time soon.

    You sound well prepared whispered, don't stress yourself, sounds like the same kind of people told me the cat would smother my baby!

    My daughter made it safely to 16 so far, and myself and my brothers grew up in a house full of animals, we all survived our childhoods!

    Our neighbours bred EBT's and not one of their 4 babies was eaten, common sense and rules are what's needed, not idiots advice.

    Bailey wouldn't get back in the hydro pool this evening. We've had no problems for over 2 years since he's been muzzled and lifted in but this week and last week he started growling and tensed up. Don't know if it's him not wanting to be handled after his op/when he was kept in for tests etc but a bit of a disaster. Thought we'd crossed this bridge but we're back to square one! :(:(

    The ramp doesn't go all the way down and the pool is above ground if that makes sense. He can't get out himself which is why I think he doesn't use the ramp. We normally put a treat in the muzzle and he's lifted in and the muzzle comes off but the last 2 weeks he's growled and barked and doesn't want to go back in after his first swim - he normally does 3 with a break between each one. I don't know if he's still worried about being handled from being in the vets or are the treats maybe a bit too hard for him - but he has no problem eating them lol! :rolleyes: He doesn't NEED to go to hydro anymore but it's helped so much I've kept taking him. This one is 15 mins away from my house - if we stopped going there we'd have to go to the one in Sallins so a bit of a trek compared to what we're used to now.

    I just started work in a pet shop.... I had never handled any reptiles before, within a week, I LOVE them! I wish I could own a corn snake. But I know that I can't! I'm also a recovering arachniphobe, I say recovering because in the last two years or so I have been dealing ok with house spiders... soon I will have to care for a tarantula. I don't know how I will cope!

    Who did you order from Sarannewrap? I've made booboos on zooplus orders before, but called their helpline to cancel the order, no problems. But you have to do it quickly!

    It looks like a reasonable food. Lot of wheat though? Her royal fussy-puppness is still on junior food or I might've taken a bag off your hands. Perhaps let us know which one you've ended up with and someone might snap it up? :pac:

    Would they let you exchange it? We ordered the Royal Canin calm for dogs by mistake once and they arranged for collection from us and did a swap. It might be worth asking them, nothing to lose.

    Back from holidays and have decided never to take 2 weeks holidays together again. Whatever about the dogs pining for us, we really pined for them! Even though I'd taken a good few videos beforehand so I'd have them on my phone to watch whenever I got a bit lonely for them! And it didn't help that we didn't meet many dogs on holidays, normally I will approach people with dogs and get my "fix" of rubs and kisses, but I barely met any, except a fab little dog in the US dog shop (the one that sells the freedom harnesses) who gave me lots of hugs and kisses :)

    Yeah I emailed them earlier to ask if any chance I could swap it. It wouldnt be so bad if it was just a normal order but I ordered extra for my mam who is taking the found kitten on Monday. Absolute nightmare! Its a good thing I still have about 20 cans left in the shed from my last order :pac:

    Sorry, Sarannewrap, our girl is on raw. Hope you can arrange something with zooplus. That is a right pain, alright.

    Speaking of wheat in food though, a kid slipped Nyssa one of Maxizoo's biscuit treats when we were in there earlier. I let it pass, although of course I shouldn't have. And well, we had a little romp in a forest near us afterwards, and when she had a poop, the tail-end of it was a runny mess! She was back to normal (ie. on the very firm side) when she went after her dinner later, but needless to say, that is an experiment that won't be repeated :D

    Phew, I have some short term foster dogs here at the moment, unfortunately I think the little girl may be pregnant, they've been sleeping out in the kennel block, as I have so many of my own in the house, and one of my own rescues didn't like her brother. Anyhoo, long story short, managed to reintroduce the two boys, no problems at all, so they can both sleep in the house from now on, where I can keep a close eye on her.

    Roll on this day week and hopefully we'll be done with bloody fireworks...and me playing fireworks sounds all the time lol. Bailey is asleep in his kitchen crate and is happy to take treats and kongs so we've definitely made progress. I have his thundershirt on him which was kind of helping but he was still a but worried and then remembered I had calming treats/chews I got on iherb - gave him one and he was asleep within 5 mins!! I've a half day on fri after strategically doing some work from home today so will be able to get him out for a long run on Friday afternoon...before coming home to collect the baby from being spayed(!). I have visions of them trying to bring her round after the op and her lifting her head, giving a dirty look and going back asleep like what she does to us lol!!! :pac:

    The cats have taken over the sofas tonight. Felix and Jazzy are next to me, bottom to bottom, probably not going to end well.:D Jazzy stole Mr Pumpkinseeds side of the sofa while he was in the kitchen, he's always waiting for the chance to nab that side of the sofa. Poppy and Toby had the other sofa but Poppy gave up her seat for Mr P.:)

    Elly has been awake since 530! Been out several times, and I've now sacrificed a sock so she'll lie quietly for half an hour. I really don't want to get up yet, it's too dark, raining and miserable!

    I made Roisins crate up for her last night, pillows and blankets all layered nicely. Pop her in and what does she do? Climb under the whole pile :rolleyes:

    Weird thing though: was laying in bed this morning with Max and Roisin having a lazy sleep in and when Roisin woke up she crawled up for hugs and Max was beside me and bit her and tried to mount her :confused::confused:

    The dog burglar has struck again...

    No cans of sardines or mackerel in spicy tomato sauce left, so he had to go for a big can of dog food.
    Pretty impressive, they are heavy, he opened the door to the food cupboard, took out the can and opened it, with just a little chewing around the lip.
    Ate half the can and went back to bed, I got up at 8am and discovered the evidence, he then had the cheek to rattle his bowl for brekkie!

    There's a dog here this week that is able to open doors, inwards and outwards so I've been locking doors after me to make sure they don't get into the garden when I've the gate open and to prevent them getting down the hall into mischief (ie Cocos toy box of stuffed animals). But yesterday I locked myself out of the front part of the house after I locked the kitchen door behind me and went out the front door, of which we have no key for (long story). I had to climb in the bedroom vent window to get down the hall, knocking the blind off the window in the process. :o

    There were loads of broken biscuits in the park today...the dogs were on lead so weren't able to eat them. 15 mins later I had them off lead in the river on the other side of the park when Bailey swam across the river, ran up and ate all the biscuits, ran came back down the hill, crossed the weir and came back to us like nothing happened! :pac:

    Meanwhile Lucy rolled in bird poo in the park to get the smell of vinegar/shampoo mix I'd used earlier after she rolled this morning in the dunes. I can't wait to wash that dirty collar and harness this week - once she's spayed she won't be allowed of lead and roll in anything to make them dirty again lol! I may even give her a wash some evening too lol!! :p

    Also apparently the the catches were faulty, broke off in my daughters hand...she's not responsible, it's not that she couldn't work them and pulled the door too hard, it was poor manufacturing and my poor workmanship!

    Poor Tara's not feeling the best today. She got sick this morning and didn't want her breakfast, although she ate a slice of ham no problem. She's sat on my knee at the minute having cuddles. Think a trip to the vet tomorrow might be on the cards if she's not feeling any better.
