Does the protein one uses matter?
I used USN strawberry and disaster. I had to use a tesco plastic bag and turn the bowl into it and using the inside of the bag, slide it around trying to get all the goop out. As a result, there are parts of the mix all over the inside of the bag and most of it wont budge. I still lobbed it into the freezer though to get something out of it!

Bit of a variation here. More cookies than bars I'd say. This is lower carb and a bit more work but sounds great.

Fairly famous fitness instructor Damien Maher published it in a newspaper a few years ago.

Cook in a lasagne dish and cover the bottom with greaseproof paper.
Keep covered in tin-foil and the last few minutes take it off and keep cooking it for a
    few more minutes.

    1/2 cup Pecans - ground
    1/2 cup walnuts - ground
    1/3 cup Linseeds - ground
1/3 cùp nut butter spread (just once it's a different flavour to the other two nuts)
    4-6 eggs
    touch of salt
Dried Cranberries or a 1/3 cup or Honey or spoon of drinking chocolate powder
6 scoops of protein (casein is preferred, but whey will do)

Mix in a bowl, place on a olive oil coated baking tray and bake for 15-20 on 175
    degrees.

    Voila!

    Macaroon bars

    4 egg whites
    100gms dessicated coconut
    50gms ground almonds
chopped dried fruit of your choice (i used finely chopped figs and mango) - i used about 25gms
    Tspn Vanilla essence
Pinch or 2 of sea salt
    tbls cocoa powder
    Tspn sweetner of choice

Whip the egg whites and vanilla essence until they thicken a little/form peaks
Fold and mix well with all the dry ingredients and let to sit for 5min
On a baking tray (with the greased paper), shape into 6 bars
Cook for about 12-15 on 180-200.

    Done. Yum.

Hey guys gonna try this recipe tomorrow!
Where's the best/cheapest place to get ground flaxseed?
I know holland & barrett and dunnes do it but it's pretty expensive.
    Thanks!

I have been making these bars the last 4 weeks.
The first attempt was a bit sticky but then just started using a spoon to mix.
Have to say that they are really simple to make and are great snack.
I usually eat two a day.
They are keeping my sweet cravings away. I AM A JELLY SWEET "ADDICT":D

Thank you to the original poster.

Made my first batch yesterday, really sticky and still soft in the fridge.
200ml of water must be too much, not too bad taste wise (no snickers though)

Just made a batch of the OP recipe - with flaxseed/goji berries for that 'superfood' kick...
(this stuff - can't remember where i got it - it was pricey enough though)

Great idea for those on shift work/irregular routine etc...

LIMOUSINE FRED. I keep mine in the freezer and take out an hour before eating. I bought some plastic containers and just put one in for my drive to work. :D

There was one - very dormant so it was unstickied. It's called the healthy suop and stew thread

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,267 ✭✭✭opr

I made these and they came out great. Thanks a million for sharing OP. I would say use a little less water than suggested as its very sticky when mixing but once the mixture was in the freezer bag I was able to flatten out and freeze with no problems.

I wrap them individually and take them out as needed. The bars themselves are a little soft but once wrapped in tinfoil it doesn't matter and the texture for eating is perfect and they really do taste great. The fact they are kinda soft is to be expected as texture wise they are like the inside of a snickers with the tougher outer layers stripped away.

If you could find a way to put some kind of healthy outer coating on the bar to firm the whole thing up you should market and sell them they are that good OP.

    Opr

just came across this thread - those bars look great! i eat a flapjack every day in work but im gonna start making these instead. would cashews work instead of almonds? love cashews

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭Aoifums

I'm sure the OP would kill me if they saw how much I messed with their recipe but I found this when looking for a slightly healthier flapjack for school. I only just stuck them in the freezer but from eating the remainder of the bowl, all I can say is Y-U-M! Fantastic :D
    And wooden spoons ftw.

    Hi Muffinn

Can i ask what make of protein powder your using? 25g per bar seems like a lot!

    Cheers Mate!!

    Hi Muffinn

Can i ask what make of protein powder your using? 25g per bar seems like a lot!

    Cheers Mate!!

Just simple whey protein powder from MyProtein, although there is only around 20g of protein per bar that comes from the protein powder.
The remaining 5 grams comes from the small amount of non-animal protein that can be found in peanut butter, almonds and oats.

    Hope that helps!

I make variations of these - they turn out a bit like brownies.

I use different nuts/nut butters each time for variety

I'm trying to lose weight. Would these bars be ok as the odd breakfast? Also, I've never used protein powders or anything (always reminds me of bodybuilding types), is it a natural product?

    They look yum!

    They look yum!

Protein powders (look for whey protein) are generally derived from milk. So it's natural.

As for whether they'd be good as a breakfast if you're trying to lose weight, well just add them into your calorie allowance for the day. If you go under your calorie allowance you'll lose weight.

Made these yesterday. Nice but not outstanding. Might have something to do with the protein I uses tho, it's a very weird texture and not very nice (milk & egg protein from h&b)

I've only got banana protein at the moment, if I mixed in some coco powder would it make it all chocolately and nice? If so, how much?

Gonna make these durign the week.

Has anyone tried making these with Strawberry or Vanilla whey protein?

What make/brand of chocolate whey protein powder do people use to make these?

I'm currently on a low carb diet so I'd just have to be careful with these, they might have quite a bit of sugar from the maple syrup??

    Sorry for the newbie questions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 176 ✭✭tiernanobrien

Just thought I'd add a little twist onto this. First time a made them they were a bit gooey so i put them in the over for 20 minutes and they came out hard protein bars which are as delish. Theyre bigger too coz the oats expand. very impressed with the recipe!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,353 ✭✭✭Sasquatch76

Going to try these soon, although have to order whey for the first time first! Think I'll try a little virgin coconut oil in the mix in lieu of honey/syrup... not sure if it would act as well as a binding agent, but sure worth a try!

I used Maximuscle promax choclate and it worked out fine, but any brand of whey should do.

Has anyone made this with Unflavoured whey Protein? Just wondering on taste.

Perhaps I could add something to liven it up? Nesquik perhaps?

Does anyone know how well these would keep if they were left unrefrigerated?

I ask as I am going on a safari and think they'd make an excellent midday snack for those long games drives

They go fairly sticky left out of the fridge and lose their shape quick enough so i'd say they would get messy! You could keep them in a cool bag/box maybe?

    Unflavoured + Cocao/Nesquik = Chocolate Whey

Thats basically all flavoured whey is. So using unflavoured is fine if that all you have. Although, obviously don't buy unflavoured if its only for this purpose. As its just hassle

I made these with choco mint whey. I forgot the oats, its very sticky, but still tasty

Not an option I'm afraid, I'm packing light!

I just made these now, currently in the freezer as I type. I used a tiny bit of cocoa powder and it instantly turned it a lovely brown chocolately colour.

Another tip could be to use the little tubs rice come in from the chinese (Plastic ones) to freeze it instead of using the bag, might be easier but I'll let you all know what happens and how they tatse in an hour or so! But from the non-frozen taste they're gonna be yum.

Are you guys using these as meal replacers or as a snack or how?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 646 ✭✭✭kaji

What happens if you bake these? I've done a Google search and found out that the whey "de-natures", and there's something about the amino acids not being available then.

Can someone explain this to me in English, as I want to bring these bars to work, but not if they're all sticky.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 986 ✭✭✭Typhoon.

i tried baking something like these before... not a success...goes like cardboard.... your better off eating them as they are... even if they are sticky...next time use a little less wet ingredient
