Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No, but it would be nice if they referred to the law as it stands.

    Ya and convicted them.

It was the judge that convicted them, and you really shouldn't be proud that someone was convicted if they shouldn't have been (unless you're referring to a s.49(1), it's not clear from the other post).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,957 ✭✭✭Hooch

No, because gardai are required to inform someone in technical legal language when they are exercising their statutory powers, but they are also required to inform someone in ordinary language of what they are doing and why.

So to arrest they would say "I am arresting you for an offence under s.49 (1), (2), (3) or (4) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 (they rarely say as amended though)" and then say "because you were swerving around and when I spoke to you your speech was slurred and I could smell drink".

We always said it and now must.
    Bond-007 wrote: »

It is now Bond due to a recent court decision. We always said it in my area of work but the regular lads left it out. As amended or the correct wording of the road traffic and transport act must now be said and given in evidence in court. But as amended is the prefered wording as it covers everything......''Amended by what Garda?'' Amended by every act that came after it judge:)

Im gonna be the first one to say that this programme will be completely edited and show nothing like what happens in real life with the traffic corps.

It will be all checkpoints/speed checks, giving out tickets and driving up and down motorways and maybe a fatal road traffic accident put in aswell to give the "shock" factor to the programme.

I bet their not going show the traffic units going to proper calls like they usually do, fights, robberies, public order, chases

    I hope im proved wrong
Thats funny what i was just sayin that to meself when i was reading down through it and lads up ther ...yous aren't half veering of the subject!! lol

It was the judge that convicted them

Well it was my evidence that led to the successful conviction, (and convicted is the term that most members say when their case is successful).

you really shouldn't be proud that someone was convicted if they shouldn't have been

Im proud of doing my job everyday and im proud that iv never been involved in the conviction of a person that shouldn't have been.

Never once in my years of going to court and my countless court cases have i ever had a case against a person that wasn't before the court lawfully.

Every person on a charge sheet or summons from me was before the court for a reason.
Since the judges convicted and sentenced the cases i brought before them, then obviously the so called innocent that were convicted, were not in fact
"convicted if they shouldn't have been".
unless you're referring to a s.49(1), it's not clear from the other post

I was referring to 49(1) as i presume that is what foregone was implying/

    Are you a member johnny????

Well I am certainly looking forward to watching this show in under an hour now. It does look promising in the adverts/clipets on RTE but like everything else, anything can look good in short clips but having it on for 25mins could be another story entirely.

Here's hoping it is good though.

    tick tock ...

Well done to all involved. You really just never know what kind of mindsets are out there on the roads, really do you! Remarkable work by A.G.S. it has to be said. Good viewing so it is & a real eye-opener.

Good chase footage from the heli aswell! Unfortunate that there wasnt a camera in the patrol car to show just how much of a ejit that driver was, coulda easily killed someone!

Was a great production and very insightful indeed. I have all future episodes Sky+.

Comparing it to the likes of Road Wars and other UK Traffic Police shows, the Irish motorist gets away with murder!

The guy in the Black Hyundai on M11 who was caught at 164km/h, breaking red lights only got a fixed penalty and 2 points for breaking the red light  The unaccompanied 17 year old in the overheating Astra was allowed on his way with a slap on the wrists and a don't do it again after being caught at 38km/h over the limit a week before hand! What's the point in bringing in new laws and legislation if they're not going to be enforced across the board.

I'm not having a stab at AGS, I respect their work, they do a great job and don't get enough praise for their work.

So the standard MO in Donegal is to leg it across the border? Can the PSNI do anything to them?

Did a female garda say across the radio that can she "cancel the PSNI" once he was caught?

I'm not sure if i heard that correctly

Yep, that was what was said alright.

Border stations can ring up the PSNI and get them to take over from the border. Also, when TETRA is fully operational, it will enable cross border communications to some extent.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

If said scumbag pulled in at the first turning just over the border, the Gardaí could not follow him?

Sweet. As someone living in Letterkenny, its good to know that there's no escape for these people anymore.

I believe that up until a few years ago (with the RUC), once someone crossed the border they were pretty much free

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,059 ✭✭✭kirving

Surely the Gardai should be allowed chase a suspect into the north until the PSNI take over, or at least let the helicopter over the border to keep track of him.

They do seem to be extremely leniant, but maybe the Gardai are afraid of someone claiming they were made an example of because of the show.

The radio language seems very informal too...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,584 ✭✭✭PCPhoto

wasnt a bad show .... but like a sedated "Cops" ...... used the same style - if none of the "action"

it does highlight the idiots on the road - but in my opinion also shows that the laws are too lenient on people.....for example the 17yr old .... even though previous for speeding (either the previous Nov, the week before or earlier that night - wasnt very clear) - but also an overheating car, missing a wing mirror and no licence available, car and driver was not suitable for the road - yet the garda used his discretion and allowed the driver to continue breaking the law (provisional licence without full licence driver)

the guy who was making a break for the boarder deserved the 18months and more (drunk, no licence, no insurance, dangerous driving etc.)

actually the more that I think about it : stereotypical "foreign" drunk driver, Nordy guy making a break for the boarder, teenager (no full licence and driving a rustbucket) ..... bit cliche isnt it ? cant wait till next week (Dont have Sky+)

Surely the Gardai should be allowed chase a suspect into the north until the PSNI take over, or at least let the helicopter over the border to keep track of him.
In the Schengen Agreement there is a section regarding 'hot pursuit' which allows a police car (Car A) from one country to follow a car across the border if no other police car is available from the other country. However, once the police car is available from the other country (Car B), Car A must pull back. This does not yet apply in Ireland as we have not signed this agreement

But yes, there should be some form of co-operation in place to let this take place.

The radio language seems very informal too...
Most people don't know this, but aside from the Nato Alphabet and some other abbreviations (DVSA, RTA), there is very little radio speak in the Gardaí. No code system is in place like in the UK & US.

It was good they way out state of the art communications system was shown. The old reliable members own mobile phone!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

It would be more secure than the radio system.

It might have been a state one?

I liked the show, members came accross well.

Dont mean to be cynical but i presume there not going to show
traffic members out in Fiat Ulsyesses (sp) ina chase  and other instances where members lack of equipment lets them down.

I can see this series been very Pc correct and only highlighting the exciting aspects of our work.

To be fair, its a show on the traffic core who I assume don't have small cars.

Wasn't a sh1tty State Nokia but a fancy looking slide phone. Even if it was state we still shouldn't be relying on mobile phones for secure communications. We still have no date in the DMR for Tetra.

Do they have the Ulsyesses outside Dublin or is that a stupid question?

Do you mind me asking where you heard this? I've heard so many different dates from different people. The last date I was given was by a member for communications and that date came and went.

DMR north 10th of June according to Tetra Ireland trainers. Where I am nearly all cars have been fitted with the tetra sets, most people have been trained and all stations have been fitted with the storage lockers for charging them, so for once its looks pretty certain to be June 10th :D. Not sure about the DMR south & other areas. Have you been trained yet?

I'm DMR(SC). We were trained march/april. Lockers in stations since then. We were supposed to go live in april then may. NC are trained, south is trained and think west are at the moment.

We still have no main sets in the stations but all cars are fitted and then redone because of some mess up.

So we'll see about the 10th.

Yeah, I tought DMR SC was going live around Easter in April. NC is trained and using the other Tetra system (The Nokia one) but in that case it must be all of the DMR, except Traffic who I think are already on it. But at the moment it looks like the 10th.

There was also a great example of MUPPETS not moving out of the way of mobiles responding to an emergency with lights and sirens.

@ members from the Garda Traffic Corps:

Did tonights show actually depict as acurately as possible events that you face on a daily basis? Was their any aspect you would have added on that perhaps you felt the show didn't fully display?

Any message you would have liked to have hit home to young drivers that you feel wasn't completely said on this episode? or were you just happy with the way this episode was edited and aired?

I know it was only the first episode but I just wondered if it has set a good precedent.

I missed it, sadly..however I hope my good colleagues referred to each and every car as a mechanically propelled vehicle.

Or was there any vehickles to be seen?

Just watched it now Kerry and to be honest I dont think it does. Not impressed at all.

Second incident with the clapped out car and provisional licence wasnt good enough tbh.

Also a lot of flaws in legislation used. Any arrest should be accompanied by correct procedure and speak. You are after all taking someones liberty away so common since would reason that everything should be done properly......and thats with no cameras rolling.

    Bring back road wars:p

    Just my 2 cents

With the aid of devices that I may or may not have........

I most recently heard a chase involving a number of members, 'alpha sierra' and a silver audi TT. As was said in the programme, about 'getting a stinger out, cos this guy is going to kill someone' or something to that effect, that had to be done for the tv show. Very informal chat. On Friday night, several units and the heli chased a car from tallaght to cherrywood and then back and up towards 3 rock. It was a clear night, but Alpha Sierra still had to break off pursuit because of low cloud and then return to base for fuel. I think in the end, the car got away. The was no real informal language like there was on traffic blues. The crappy car and the teenager was from December of last year. I would say that all footage was HEAVLY edited by AGS.

Overall, it was ok, another rte special. Road/Traffic wars is a lot more gritty, and I get the impression that they have a lower tolerence to any sort of road crime that the traffic corps do. However, if the message gets out there to the general public, and people do slow down then the programme will have achieved something.

To the rest of us, it wasnt great.
