Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

OP needs updating. You can buy unlocked phones which work on any network in Ireland now. Just insanely expensive.

So Got myself a 3GS Today its running 3.0.1...

Ran Purple Rain... It Froze... I rebooted but no sign of the 'Freeze' app?

    Any ideas?

Anything else I can run to jailbreak?

    Hi,

I'm completely iphone clueless so any help is greatly appreciated. Girlfriend wants an iphone for birthday but doesn't want to use O2.

She is Ready To Go with Vodafone at the moment, and would like to keep using that and her same sim. If i buy her an unlocked phone, can she just put in the Ready To Go sim and use as normal. Also what is the story with using the 3g aspect of the phone for internet email etc? Will she have to sign up with Vodafone for one of their monthly data packages?

    Many Thanks.

My brother bought a new iPhone upon moving to London, he gave me his Irish one which was on o2, i am also on o2, so i thought there wouldnt be an issue, but i put my sim card in and the iPhone wont accept it. Is this normal? I thought i could use an o2 sim with an o2 iPhone, do i have to unlock it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,199 ✭✭✭G-Money

I had a quick look at the iClarified site. I'm planning to buy an O2 iPhone and unlocking it after unsuccessfully being able to locate an iPhone in Milan.

There seems to be two main programs that I can see, Ultrasnow and Purplesnow for unlocking it. Which is better and whats the difference? I think the Ultrasnow one is from the apple dev team but I'm not even sure what that is. A bit clueless about it all.

Also, can the 3GS with the latest firmware be unlocked?

Latest version is 3.1, and it can't be unlocked yet.

Huge problem!! After foolishly updating my 3g to 3.1 - I was left with basically an Itouch. Now though-I tried p0wnage tool for 3.1 to jailbreak it again, because Itunes 9 was telling me it wasn't registered etc.
Except now, I can't even use it as an Itouch. It just comes up with a Itunes logo and usb connector on the Iphones screen.
Anyone any ideas what I may have done wrong or how it may be fixed. I just want to get my contacts back asap!!

I think you just need to restore it. I'm assuming you're using a Mac as the Jailbreak is only currently available for the Mac.

    Step by step here.

    OK.

I only have around 30 seconds to post and no time to research.

If I get an iPhone 3GS from the US which I will assume has the most up to date software.

Can i Jailbreak and unlock to any network to let me use it with Vodafone? And installed Cydia etc etc??

    Thanks

Can I use my Vodafone/Meteor/Three SIM in an O2 iPhone?

No. Not until you Jailbreak it and Unlock it.

    Jailbreak? Unlock? Sounds scary.

They are not really. Full details are on www.iclarified.com - linky. (includes video)

Ipod Touch unlocking tutorials are here: http://www.iclarified.com/entries/index.php?caid=2&scid=15

What's the difference between Jailbreaking and iPhone and unlocking it?

Jailbreaking entails allowing you to install non-App Store programs. Unlocking it entails allowing you to use the iPhone on a non-O2 network.

Can't I just buy and unlocked phone?

You can, but not in Ireland/UK/USA. People have reported purchasing iPhones in Belgium and Italy that are unlocked. It is simply a matter of walking into a phone shop and purchasing one, bringing it home, and popping in your SIM card.

    Can I unlock the 3Gs?

    Yes, details here.

Can I buy a phone in the US and use it over here?

AT&T have just announced (19/3/09) that they are now selling contract-free iPhones.

    Unlocking the older 3G model

Evergreen has confirmed here that Ultrasnow has been successfully used on a 3G model iPhone.

Skidmcmarx confirms it is working on Vodadfone, O2 and Meteor here.

drunkmonkey confirms the iPhone working on 3 Ireland here.

    In Summary

The 1st Generation can be unlocked and upgraded to OS version 3.0

The 3G iPhone can be unlocked and upgraded to OS version 3.0

The new model, the 3GS can be unlocked using Purplera1n. Details here.

Feel free to add to this as you see fit.

No, this means that they upgraded an already jailbroken device running 3.0 to 3.1 and kept the jailbreak intact.

im contemplating buying o2 one but I am going abroad and would like to use diff sim cards in about 3+ months.

3.1 is unlockable. I did it on my bro's phone - the trick is to re-load 3.0 firmware. Follow this video, it is by far the clearest and most succinct guide i found on the whole of the internet. Read the "info" bit on the right to get links to the various stuff.

The link you give is for unlocking an iPhone running 3.0.1. An iPhone running 3.1 cannot be currently unlocked unless you have made a copy of a certain file from the previous version and can only be done on a mac.

So this can be done if the phone is running 3.1???....

So unless your on a mac and have these files saved you can't jailbreak

I know it says 3.0.1, but from my understanding the jailbreaking technique discussed in that video first over-writes the existing firmware with older 3.0 firmware, and then jailbreaks that....so surely you can:

    1. Install redsn0w to PC / Mac,
    2. Over-write existing 3.1 iphone firmware with 3.0 firmware from here with redsn0w,
    3. Jailbreak newly loaded 3.0 firmware.

    This is my understanding.

If you have a 3G running 3.1, you CAN downgrade and jailbreak (check youtube for tutorials).

If you have an older version (such as 3.01) 3G or 3GS you can jailbreak a copy of 3.1 and stick it on your phone.

If you availed of cydias firmware signing service when you installed 3.01, that will allow you to downgrade a 3GS that is now running 3.1 (which can then be jailbroken)

Otherwise (If you are running a 3GS that is on 3.1 that was updated and authenticated officially, IE: You are a normal user who updated through iTunes or the device came with 3.1) then you can NOT currently downgrade or jailbreak your device.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12 shutterspeedlad

That's just my understanding, I have not investigated too much as it is not relevant to what I need. I saw it pop up on a few youtube vids (such as this one I think - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jD6wti-ayOs&feature=player_profilepage), but being as I have a 3GS, as soon as I saw they were not working on that device I stopped watching.

In addition, it seems to be mentioned here too - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/202796266/all-aboard-the-update-train

Yes, upgrade to 3.1.2 download blackra1n and run it with your device connected and powered on. Takes a few minutes.

This will not unlock your baseband, you will still only be able to use an o2 sim with it.

What's the deal with getting unlocked iPhones?

First, can they be purchased in the USA? (If yes, for how much?)
Secondly, if they are subject to contract in the USA, can they still be purchased over there?
Thirdly, if yes to second, can they be taken back here and used here (I'm on o2 anyway)?

I'm only answering this because the search function is down. The same question has been asked about a million times.

    1) Unlocked iphones cannot be purchased through stores in the USA. Italy, Australia and a few other countries are required by law to sell their handsets unlocked and these are the only countries you can get unlocked ones from.
And you will pay a pretty penny for one even going there to get one yourself.

    2) You can buy an iphone in the USA without a contract but they are not subsidised and will be locked to AT&T. To qualify for an iphone for $199 or $299 you must have a social security number with a good credit rating, have a permanent address in the US and sign a contract for the period.

Well.. you can get em on ebay from trusted sellers but Apple unlocked ones on ebay are gonna cost about e100 more than o2 ones.

    Hi Folks,

I bought a iphone 3GS from the states and thought it would be handy to jailbreak and unlock as i done so already with my itouch. however it's running on 3.1 firmware and has the upgraded baseband. so my understanding from looking on the internet all day is that you can jailbreak but not unlock due to the baseband.

Any feedback would be much appreciated

Ok, so I've an Iphone 3Gs and I've never upgraded the firmware on it. As it stands its a version 3.0 (7A341)

I looked at the iclarified link and followed the instructions but when I got to the point when I hit shift and restore it gets the file; iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw and then it verifies with apple. This is where it breaks.

Actual error: "verifying iphone restore with apple..."
then I wait for this: "The iphone "iphone" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build."

    I even tried changing the host file to 74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com and/or 4.208.105.172 gs.apple.com

    I'm using iTunes 9

No joy. Any idea what I should try next?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,570 ✭✭✭savemejebus

Why are you trying to restore? Can you not just Jailbreak it with Redsn0w and then use cydia to install ultrasn0w?

AFAIK you won't be able to restore to 3.0 due to Apple changing their signing procedures (unless you had jailbroke and stored ECID info with Cydia before apple made the changes).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,932 ✭✭✭Sniipe

I've never jailbroke it before... so I don't need to use restore? I just download redsnow, install it and thats it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,570 ✭✭✭savemejebus

I was in the exact same situation as you a couple of weeks ago. I jailbroke and unlocked using these two tutorials (after reading them over and over and over...)

Jailbreak - because you are already on 3.0 you can go directly to step 3
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4448 (for mac)
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4447 (windows)

    Unlock
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253

That worked for me anyways. It goes without saying "be careful doing this" if an unlock is important to your use of the phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,932 ✭✭✭Sniipe

Hey savemejebus, thanks a mill. I'll have a look over the tutorials at lunch and hopefully be sorted.

infact that was the steps I was looking at but got stuck on step 2 obviously.
