Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yesterday I took off the driver side lock, and put in a new lock.

With no central locking/remote locking this meant I now have a new key for the driver door and a separate one for the ignition/passenger door. Reason this was needed was that I broke the lock on the driver side breaking into the car a few weeks ago, having accidentally left the keys (& dog) in there. Whoops.

Still, live and learn. Always good to know how to break into your own car I guess.

It wasn't as tough a decision as I thought it would be. Sitting in the back of it on Saturday with all the seats out of it was a bit surreal and for a brief moment I changed my mind!

I think I'm going to have to buy another DC2, honestly nothing else I've driven comes close when it comes to Smiles Per Gallon. I've been driving what is quite possibly the best DC5 in the country and I still pined after my own car

The bits you get off your own would be handy...but I could see that being a viscous circle that will set you off again:p

Today I noticed the airbox was loose, so out came the Gorilla Tape. Oh yeah, and both coolant and oil are disappearing down some unseen plughole.

That's exactly what I was implying lol!
Had new rear discs, pads, calipers rebuilt and clutch master cylinder replaced yesterday.Car feels fantastic

Please note,I didn't do any of this work*

And a savage dyno run :) I was thinking 205 myself tbh so I was surprised at the end result

Well a lot of the bits off my own will be staying in place. The exhaust/airbox/suspension stuff will be staying put. Handy thing is though I can save maps on my laptop so I can share my Demon ECU(1200 quids worth of kit) between the two cars. I'm under no illusions this time though, I know as soon as I buy it (if I buy it) it'll be ripped apart and tuned to within an inch of it's life lol

Oh dear, what's the car? Any mayo on the dipstick or oil cap?

Nah I found the source of the oil leak a few minutes ago - the oil pressure switch is leaking. Took ten minutes to find the leak with a flashlight in the twilight after a month of halfhearted searching in the day! Filled her back up to max with 15W40.

The coolant overhead tank has little bits of white in it and a bit of oil but the oil dipstick seems free of mayo some bubbles when I rev it and the coolant level is dropping slowly. There was 'steam' coming out of the oil filler cap for a bit - not sure what that means?

Noticed my CMax (Diesel) was a bit sluggish to start the last few days.
Then thought I felt a power flatspot every now and then.
Then, when dropping car into third and flooring it, lost almost all power for a second.
So dropped by motorfactors and bought new fuel filter and, lo and behold, the old unit was black, brown, manky, clogged, etc...
Just wish I wouldn't have to noodle over the engine so much after changing it over, even opening the bleed valve and attaching a suction pump to pull the diesel through, I still had to attach booster pack or the battery would have died.
But she spluttered back to life, and on a good, hard test drive power was plentiful and signs of bogging down and bucking where gone.
Only put about 50000 km on that fuel filter, is that too much or too little?

    BMW plastic strikes again.
    ...........

Was reading on a Rover forum some time back how many manufacturers invested heavily in plastic components in the late 90s early 00s. Obviously as a cost saving exercise, all of the designs worked perfectly but the car manufacturers had to rely heavily on the plastic manufacturers claims on how the material would age.

'twas in relation to a plastic thermostat housing on the Rover KV6 he was referring to specifically but he was speaking in general terms too.

Interesting stuff, i'd well believe it. In fairness, 11 years is pretty good going. But sometimes you have to scratch your head and wonder if using plastic in certain instances really is that much of a cost saver.

I mean if those pulleys were metal instead of plastic, how much more would that have cost? The pressure from the cable is immense, how they lasted this long is beyond me.

I didn't actually do anything myself...

Got a full service today and a brake fluid change. Getting upgraded pads and lines soon but the brake fluid was changed too. The cars running very well right now and the the engine seems to be getting better with mileage.

Changed the tyres on the front to match the rear (Dunlop SP Sport Maxx that I've had 3 or 4 sets of at this stage). It showed me how crap the federals the garage put on when buying were. No wheelspin in 2nd, ample grip and a huge reduction in road noise and vibration. Feels like a different car. Also got a tyre place that matched camskill give or take a few squid. Passed a day off shopping around and got a good look at some winter tyres too and plenty of advice. Found that the best value generally was in the one man type of operations, although I didn't buy my tyres in one. The chains usually said a price and that was it.

Had a great laugh at one chain that told me Triangles were a decent mid range tyre and there was no need to go for federals again as it was money down the drain:rolleyes: €70 retail for a 225/40/18 is not going to end well.

When I was getting a gearbox rebuilt the guy doing it said about 50 cents extra per box on better quality parts would have saved the hassle of all the failures that the particular model had:rolleyes:

Nylon caged bearings instead of steel?
As in the steel ones were a small bit more expensive.

Not today, but on Monday I said id give the car a good going over. Wash, de-bug/tar, wax, clean the wheels of breakdust etc and polish up those tires.

Wasnt hugely dirty to begin with but heres the before and afters:
The attached files are the originals (very big), but heres some nice resized ones for ye.

    ...

Any recommendations for wax next time I give it go?

    ..

    That's a very well kept A3.

Recommend Megs NXT 2.0 or Megs Carnuba Wax.

Currently have NXT 2.0 and a top layer of Carnuba on my car and it is beading beautifully for the last 5 weeks.

I changed my brake fluid. The stuff that came out of it was like hangover urine (that colour) with bits of black in it. The pedal responce is alot firmer now. I used a gunson eezibleed kit, well worth the money. :)

It was to do with the bearings alright - I was more interested in the €€€€€ bit at the time tbh:(

I was about to as they were the cheapest until I got a call from a place that offered them €30 each cheaper as they only had two left. I knew they wouldn't match that plus they only had one in stock yesterday. I might get two more off him for the back soon even though they don't need replacing for a good while yet.

Lol I met a fella before and he had 170,000 on his 320d, turns out it had been clocked twice before he bought it and he reckoned there was well over 240,000 on it. Mine has had one previous owner and there's only so many times you can go around Ireland in ten years :P

I always spray the primed area around the hub on the disc with Werth alloy wheel paint, make it look much cleaner. Good job.

Today I did a lot to my '97 Laguna....will be doing around 600 - 1,000 miles next weekend in England so did the jobs I'd lined up to do but hadn't a chance until today

I've changed the oil, oilfilter, airfilter, pollen filter, sparkplugs, cleaned the throttle body housing and breather pipes, put on a new back exhaust box, replaced the brake caliper front drivers side as the rubber had perished and it was grabbing the disk slightly the last two weeks, replaced the pistons on the rear wheels because when I went to bleed them earlier this year both bleeding nipples sheared off! and put in fresh brake fluid and put a new alternator belt on the car too. Changed the fuel filter too. I also checked the gear oil level and tightened the nuts on the oil sump as its weeping a wee bit. Will replace the gasket soon and also spotted a small leak in the power steering hose so want to get it sorted too.

Are they Ford or aftermarket DRL's? The placement looks a little odd.

I did a boring thing to my car - swapped the head unit for the original. Need to get the RNS510 updated and properly programmed into the car so for the luxury of having audio controls again I took it out. Might just flog it.

my puntie .... flushed 3 times cooling system with some chemicals .... disconnect heater matrix, and joint pipes, as there will be some time, until ill change matrix .. (very rusty inside ... no really heating any more) , changed water pump ... odd 50 euro ... thermostat with housing ... 25 euro for an original fiat part from ebay,... most important thing - adjusted timing properly using not only marks on crankshaft pulley and camshaft pulley , but also marks on flywheel ... wont believe how my punty is smooth on any rev range. he he .. like new.

Last night I serviced (oil, oilfilter, airfilter and sparkplugs) my Micra and the mother's MINI. Had to bring out yard lights as its getting dark early. The summers' gone Joe! Mum was saying the lights were crap on her car....so looked at that and for some reason the drivers side had dropped and was pointing to the floor! So fixed that too.

Yeah I normally give the car a quick spray, then use the snow foam, then spray off the snow foam and give it a wash, then spray off suds etc, then dry and polish windows etc.

The DRL's are from MS Design. They look the business

They were in the Ford catalogue but you had to purchase them from MS Design. I purchased them from Duncan Smith automotive in the UK after talking to stockroom lad in Cavanaghs of Charleville.

Be careful with that, you could find that next week it'll be pointing at the sky!

The motors for aligning the headlights seem to be a little lazy in some first en MINIs. Herself's has a lazy drivers light, some days it doesn't want to do anything.
Can you hear it moving when you turn the car on first - you should hear a whirring, and you'll see the beam moving if you turn the lights on as you do it.
I think it might be dirt in the mechanism or a bad contact - neither light would respond to the switch inside the car when we got it first, they were pointed down to the ground as you saw on your mothers. Now both work most of time. I've heard frantic wiggling of the switch will wake them up?

I can recommend Osram Nightbreakers, herself is very happy with them in her MINI.
