Great whites are fantastic creatures. I've studied them for years in my spare time.

It's long since proven that most attacks by them are accidental. From below, surfers look like penguins with their arms outstretched on the board, hence the attacks. I don't know how I feel about them being culled.

    penguins in Australia

Ah!!!!! I meant seals ffs :(

How about they sort out the box jellyfish first ?

Great whites have worldwide distribution. If you remove them from an area then new ones will fill the gap.

In 2011 there were 12 deaths from unprovoked shark attacks
    http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/isaf/2011summary.html worldwide.

In the same time humans killed 73,000,000 sharks http://www.livescience.com/14964-sharks-fin-soup-bans-stop-strong-demand.html

    Gotta love the word "cull".

In the Phoenix park, with the Deer, it's
with no predators to control their numbers the deer in the park would over populate

unless .... we could put a turnstile on the back of the tigers cage. Deer goes , deer doesn't come out.

Deer in pheonix park aren't native to ireland anyway, they were only put there for aesthetic reasons afaik.

The should catch them and release them on the west coast of Irelend if the dont want them over there, be great crack hooking up to one of them off the rocks. Might be even be able to create a new sport out of it...shark powered water skiing :D

Our results include the successful extraction and sequencing of DNA from this extinct species
Instead of wasting all that money on those ties we should be trying to get the Irish Elk sorted :)

or bring back wolves n' bears ?

Cod are more abundant now than ever and I know this from being an angler myself

You might want to tell the north see and north atlantic that.

Before ww11, over a million tons of Cod was being landed, now it's less than 550k tons. Also, there are MUCH bigger boats in the water now.

60 years ago two lads in a small boat out of Kilronan could land more cod in a days fishing than a factory ship can in a week now.

Cod stocks are better than they were in the 70's but they are still being over fished.

Put there in the 17th Cenury to be hunted apparently! But the fallow deer there today are descended from the original herd there, so there's a certain amount of historic value to them now. In terms of genetics they're one of the healthiest fallow deer herds in Europe because of the way they've been selectively culled.

Tagged sharks roam over a huge area. Can't see this happening.

They should round up all the sharks...transport them to Ireland and release them off the coast of Cork.
Then simply round up all the natives and **** them into the sea.

I've seen it written once or twice that more people are killed by donkeys each year than sharks.

I googled it but didn't come up with anything solid, someone on yahoo answers reckoned that it was a made up stat.

I think the idea of a shark attack is what we find most fearful. You're out minding your own business and suddenly this alien creature from the deep has cut you in two. Since it's not a mammal we don't get any sort of connection or empathy with it.

First they came for the socialists...

Generally divers don't get as much attention from sharks as surfers (who look roughly like a seal when viewed from below) or spearfishermen (carrying injured and dying fish around)

Yeah, I read somewhere that the statistics of a shark bite fatality were miniscule compared to most deaths world wide.

Your right though, we do have a built in perhaps from evolution , fear of sharks. Movies like Jaws then put that fear into overdrive and scared the bejaysus out of all of us.#

Once you hear the term man eating killing machaine your primed to hate and fear.

Funnily enough I hear its both tigers and bull sharks that are the main threat to humans

i posted on what their diet is,you do the math, none of them are being culled,ie population control, and their diet consists mainly of fish..add two and two

You can look up dwindling fish stocks and sharks on google or yahoo if you want..

Oh god, fish stocks are dwindling, not because of over fishing, but because of sharks? I think the internet has reached a new low with that post.
So 100 years ago there were loads of fish, then the shark population got big and ate them all :pac:
    Fur fuk sake!

No never looked at Jaws much the thought of a shark is enough to scare the hell outta me,i agree we shouldnt go near the waters where there are sharks much,i heard of an irish guy who died paddling out in a shark infested lake whilst drunk,so ya i think its daft, but if sharks numbers are not controlled and they eat lots of fish and seals and other stock such as octopus and that,we should cull them bc of that i think..

Has to be the funniest dumbest post all week, Shark infested lake indeed.

It was a Croc infested billabong and he simply drowned.

Unfortunately Australia have announced that the contract for culling Great Whites has been given to FAS - all roles will be internships though the Jobbridge scheme. Not only are they eating us and our fish - they're taking our jobs
