Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Treated myself to a Sarb017 which arrived yesterday after sitting in Portlaoise since Monday. Delighted with it. I absolutely adore it!

Omega nato worth the price tag? I suspect it is but won't be a popular opinion.

I'm impressed with it, but like everything omega 50% of the price is to pay for marketing. If feels quite stiff in comparison to other nato's I've tried, but I'd imagine it will soften with more wear. I still think the rubber strap is my preferred option for the PO, but it changes it up enough to keep me interested.

Is it really worth 65-75 quid*? I mean it's a nate, no matter how well it's put together it's still a nate, outside of having gold thread or some amazing technology, I'd say 30 quid would be a very pricy one.

The luxury markup tax on that has to be closer to 90%.

*Based on the price I see in Google,l divided by 2.

If we get into the subject of "worth" in new watches(and vintage for that matter) we'd be here all day. :)

There's a review of an Omega NATO on r/watches (unboxing here imgur.com/a/S9QJb) that the guy shelled out $180 for, roughly €160.

It took me all day to figure out you're talking about straps. Was thinking "That's very cheap for an Omega watch"

On the 1st June , Peasant started a thread advising Vostok had released a load of new models. So of course I had a look and within minutes I had ordered two watches.

Well 94 days after ordering they arrived this morning.

    2r6d6jr.jpg

They are pretty much the same watch with different dials. I have only one other white dial so I fancied another.

    It's the Vostok 120 case.
    41mm wide including crown guards.
    46mm lug to lug.
    18mm lug width.
    Waterproof 200m
    Automatic movement.

At the time of purchase it came with the option of rubber strap or nato strap. Like a dope I chose both on rubber instead of one on rubber and one on nato. It's typical that every spare strap I have is 20mm. I'll have to buy a few cheap 18mm nato's now.

These are my first Russian watches and based on first impressions they won't be my last.
Apologies for the crappy iPhone pics below

I have ordered the same Amphibia 120 with the black dial. I only have another 60 days to wait then.

Actually that wasn't a dopey decision at all :D
Once you've put that watch on a nato, you will find that on the narrow 18 mm strap it looks a bit off in its proportions ...the rubber with the extra width just at the lugs suits it much better.

Cheap nato's are much easier to find than cheap rubbers with the notch.

    Yep, I am that puerile P. :D

A few weeks back I went looking for a strap so I could preserve the original NOS one I had attached to this watch.

    mkw6cx.jpg

I don't like "drawer queens" and have to wear my watches so… Anyhoo, I found one, a NOS Canadian made Bulova Accutron branded "Corfam" faux suede strap from the early 70's. Faux suede could only be of that time. :D

    360978.jpg

    And here it is on the wrist;

    360977.jpg

I tried to go for as 70's a background as I could. :D

I usually stick a 20mm NATO on watches with 18mm lugs. Bit of a squeeze but looks better to me than the 18mm straps.

Aye, if anything I prefer to undersize a strap. Looks more "vintage" as I've noticed quite the number of vintage watches with straps that were upgraded around the same time are undersized.

Certainly worked for Sean Connery :)

Does that Bulova have the sweeping seconds Wibbs?

It does indeed. It basically has an Accutron movement(218?) with a Quartz canister and chip instead of the usual circuitry, that uses the forks as the stepping motor. Their role as the timekeeper/oscillator no longer required. It was a very canny and clever way for Bulova to get into the then very expensive new world of quartz without breaking the bank or having to retool existing production.

These are cool. i have seen them before, but only in the silver colour. I can't remember which ball/ring shows what. Inner ball does hour and outer is minutes ?

Inner is minutes and outer is hour. I think the black is a recent addition and they now have a silver with gold segments. Feels like a proper precision instrument, I love it.

One feels the color options might be less popular for a watch like that...
What I'm interested in, can you move the balls by being a bit clumsy? Or are they designed to be immovable by outside forces?

They generally stay in position, but you can push them off the magnetic hold quite easily at the same time with a gentle bump. (I guess people who can read braille are used to having a sensitive touch and would feel for them softly)

For example some times when I pull back my shirt sleeve the inner (minute) one may get displaced....but its easy to notice as you can see the ball actually rolling or moving, but with a little flick of the wrist the bearings just rotate around and lock back into position.

There are probably videos on youtube showing what I mean.

Ah, i get it! Yeah, magnets, bitches!
Very clever, I thought the balls were connected to the mechanism, which wouldn't make sense. I like it even more now.
I would always be interested in watches displaying time in other ways than traditional analog or digital watches.

I would recommend this if you are looking for something different, the materials and finishes have a feel of real quality.

Had Ocean One Vintage Red, this one is stunning. M2 is nice, and If I didnt get the MK1, then would have bought it, the MK 1 cost me €30 more than a new MK2.

This is my Dads watch which he's given to me, it's about 58 years old he thinks. After lying in a drawer for about 20 years it started ticking a soon as it was wound.

Oriosa from what I can gather were a common enough brand in their day nothing special.

Needs a new strap (one of the pins is badly bent) and decent service. At the moment it has be wound twice a day and gains about 3 mins.

    French Flag armband?

Or Dutch, depending on how you look at it. I have a navy NATO also but as I'm wearing a navy jumper I thought it might be a bit overkill to combine the too. I find the NATO straps handy for blue dial watches that don't come on a bracelet as they can be hard to match with leather straps. The original 'leather' strap that comes with the Vostoks seems to be made of some godforsaken vinyl cardboard-y stuff and smelled vaguely of wet dog. Lovely little watch though and my first hand winder.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 60,170 Mod ✭✭✭✭Wibbs

Yea blue dials can be hard to match with leather. Light tan seems to work. Those straps made from cork work nicely. Or you can try blue leather, but it has to be a perfect match or it looks odd. Those Russian watches are the bargain of the century IMH. But yea their straps tend to be awful and you'd not like to meet the cow the "leather" came from.. :) I have had some of their rubber straps that were actually quite nice(though I can't get on with rubber straps myself) and out of the hideous bracelets I did source one that's actually pretty good. Made from actual steel as opposed to the usual tinfoil. :)

Very cool. For some reason it looks to me like a hybrid between a watch and one of those old Ronson cigarette lighters.
